Wonderful, Tasty, Refreshing "Joon: Rose of Syrah!" SITREP I got to hang out with special friends Ethan Z. & Gee at Tin Barn Vineyards recently in Sonoma Valley, and we really enjoyed some of the new varietals that Tin Barn was featuring here. THE SETUP After doing some wine tasting and enjoying all of the varietals here (Zinfadel, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc) I was immediately drawn to "JOON - Rose of Syrah", which is a very different sort of Rose since it is made from the Syrah grape: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/tin-barn-vineyards-sonoma?select=_HKF5zoFxKBNYKInEFmHJw#_HKF5zoFxKBNYKInEFmHJw Many roses are made from Cabernets & Zinfandels. But the Joon has a more refreshing, fruity & exotic splash of flavors on my palate. Joon is priced at $23 per bottle, but I was able to obtain at my wine club discount of $18. HISTORY In one of the legends of Syrah's origins, the name comes from one of its homonyms - Shiraz, because Shiraz was a very old city in Iran and produced the well-known Shirazi wine, and so legends claim the Syrah grape originated in Shiraz and then was brought to Rhône. The person in another legend who brought the variety to Rhône is named as the crusader Gaspard de Stérimberg, who is supposed to have built the chapel at Hermitage. Another legend of the grape variety's origin, based on the name Syrah, is that it was brought from Syracuse by the legions of Roman Emperor Probus sometime after AD 280. Suffice it to say, there is a lot of mystique related to this delicious grape, with lots of cultures & cities wanting to take credit for it. JOON June or "Joon", is the brightest month of the year in the western hemisphere, and is named for the Roman goddess Juno, and also means "dear", a term of affection in the Persian language. This is the affection and sentimentality associated with this lovely varietal. The good: 1. Owner was friendly and accommodating. Provided info on the business, his journey in wine, and gave great descriptions of each wine. 2. The wine was well done. Wife and I each had a tasting flight. Full disclosure, none of them were the best we had that day, but all but one white ( we prefer reds, that is the only reason) was enjoyed. Each seemed well thought out and balanced. The disappointing (no real bad): 1. The location was not ideal. It is located in an industrial park and while the outside setup was nice, and the tasting room well appointed, it was a bit disappointing given the beautiful area surrounding the area. We would absolutely encourage you to give it a try if sampling wine in the area, just don't go for the view. read more

Every once in a while you find a hidden gem in the most unexpected place. Thanks to Jonathan and Sarah at CellarPass, I am now finding more and more wine country treasures here in the North Bay. Tin Barn Vineyards is one of those Sonoma County secrets that is hiding right under your nose. Who knew there was an amazing winery tucked away in this warehouse district of Sonoma?! It may surprise you to learn that Tin Barn Vineyards is one of ten wineries in the small Eighth Street Winery community. I recently worked with Kevin B. to host one of our Yelp Flight Club events at Tin Barn Vineyards. As always, it was a great event with wonderful company. Thank you so much to Amy, Steve, and the rest of the TBV family for hosting us. I came away with a greater understanding of what it takes to produce small batches of wine through a single vineyard. It always amazes me to learn more about the wine making process, especially when it's with a company that is so passionate about their craft. I brought a bottle of the famous 2012 Sonoma Zinfandel to a dinner party last week and it was a huge hit. If you have the chance to explore this community and make an appointment for a wine tasting I highly recommend it. Absolute hidden gem in Sonoma. It's in a slightly odd part (you'll start driving into a very industrial area and think to yourself... Google Maps may have lost its mind) but it's a cute tasting room with awesome folks in it who are very passionate about wine making. I love that almost all of their wines are single vineyard wines. I thought it made the flavors of each varietal really interesting and good. I loved their Savignon Blanc and their Zins. Everything was excellent honestly. Highly recommend you pay them a visit! read more

The online pics of this place reflect on what actually it looks like. Many wine tasting places in Sonoma or Napa have fictitious accessible grape yard pictures where they are just a tasting room. Ample parking, low key and we walked in without a reservation on the weekend. The staff and management are pretty friendly and explain all the details of the wine production along with helping you pick a wine based on your interest. The wine collection is outstanding, especially we liked their pinot noir. We did not get a chance to see their warehouse since they are not open for a tour. I also did not get a chance to hang out with the dogs. But this place is dog-friendly for the tasting room. I would like to check out their wine tasting next time whenever they are open for tours. read more

My review is based on two things: 1) the wine is fantastic 2) the service and people there were fun, friendly and informative This place isn't much to look at let's be honest. But Tin Barn far surpassed many of my prior experiences at wineries in Sonoma and Napa by making me feel like I was hanging out in the kitchen of a friend having a glass chatting it up about the weather, food, history and travel. A really class act in terms of their customer service as they don't corral you into a line and take your money, give you 3 tastings and make you feel like an idiot if you don't say "strong finish with multiple tannins". The google address didn't match up (it was an old addy) but we found the place eventually and were not chastized for being late. As Sharon M says, it was in a weird industrial park but the server was super friendly and the tasting room was quite nice. Then I learned...he was the winemaker! Dude! We really enjoyed this hidden gem in Sonoma! We were looking for a quick stop on our way out of town after touring my husband's childhood stomping grounds. We decided to avoid the big wineries and opted for a small, highly rated boutique winery instead. We hit the jackpot. Most of the wines we tasted were unique and tasty! And we had the tasting room to ourselves! Brett gave us an informative and down-to-earth tasting experience and a short tour of the facilities. We had a fantastic time and took home 4 bottles. We plan to be back! Loved the Zin, the Sav Blanc and that Pinot Noir was liquid fruity peppery goodness. Such a treat! The reserve Cab was really good too. Avoid the hoity toity crowds. Okay, if you go wine-tasting on a regular basis, you've probably had this experience: You start your day, bright-eyed and full of optimism. "What new delicious surprises await me today?" you wonder. You pull up to the first winery, they pour you a nice-looking sauvignon blanc or maybe a chard, you sip, annnnnnd.... Blech. You pour it out, trying to be polite, and try something else. Blech again. Maybe it's the winery. Not your cup of tea. Onto the next one. Only, it's the same story at the next winery. Everything jangles off your tongue like a dishwasher down a flight of stairs. Nothing tastes good. The pinots taste like watered down grape kool-aid and the zins are all outta pepper. Maybe it's something in the air. Maybe it's just a bad streak of luck. But maybe, just maybe, you can't taste good wine anymore. Maybe you're a fraud, maybe you couldn't tell the difference between a nice cabernet and a three dollar bottle of Mad Dog. Maybe this wine, all this wine you've spent a whole day pouring into the bucket, is perfectly fine, and you just can't tell anymore. And then, THEN, disheartened and looking for some bright spot to redeem the day, you pull into a place like THIS. A warehouse complex, for godsake. You cahhhn't be seriouhhhs. You walk in the door, and the very nice lady behind the counter pours you a generous slug of sauvignon blanc. Sure. Why not. Weary, you take a sip. Alarms go off in your head. What the hell was THAT? You take another sip. Again, lights and sirens. It's... fruit! Fruit and floral and oh my god this is good! This is really good! Another sip, and it's still there, that delicious wine is real, it's still in your glass, and it's real. You look around at the other people at the counter, and they're giving you that look, that Brigadoon look: "Figured it out, did you, boyo? This place is magic, it is." Okay, so, you get one good wine out of the day, right? But then she pours you a pinot noir, and you sip and your jaw drops. There's a beautiful earthy roundness, like you've actually got grapes in your mouth. A bottle of this is coming home with you. Oh yes. And then you try the syrah. And then a zin. And it's like you've stepped into some sort of parallel dimension, in which everything that touches your glass was poured straight from the private stores of Bacchus himself, and maybe your head spins a little. They pour you a cab. And if your wife is there, you've already walked to the far side of the room from her, because you don't want her to say she likes it just because you do, you need to know, you need independent, unbiased confirmation, and even though she's all the way on the other side of the room, as soon as she takes a sip she turns and looks at you in shock, SHOCK, and you both mouth the words together, to each other, across the room, in perfect, silent unity: "What the F@&%?" We somehow happened upon this place. We have been to Sonoma numerous times (our visitors make us... twist my arm). This particular time we stopped in the Visitor's Center to get a map to hopefully try something new. Our usual southern Sonoma wineries are great, but we wanted something different. We saw a Tin Barn sign, but couldn't find it in the map. We were driving through some warehouses and at the last minute, decided to u-turn back to Tin Barn. Boy am I glad we did that. This is what all wineries should be like: small, chill, no frills, all good wines. We walked out with a case - eeek. :) and Amy was fantastic. So friendly, knowledgeable and just passionate. Glory hallelujah! This place blew my socks right off! You wouldn't know it by the industrial park where this winery is located, but this place is fantastic! Sandy, the marketing director, was doing the tastings the day we were there. She's smart and funny, and would make a great stand up comedian. Not only that, she knows a LOT about wine. She gave us a little impromptu tour of the area where the wine is aged with enough facts to create an entire episode of Bay Area Backroads for KQED. The wines are fabulous. Every one of the five we tried was fascinating and complex. Needless to say, we over spent a bit that day, but it was worth it. They also have a wine club, for which there is no dues. You just get a shipment of four wines each quarter, before anyone else gets them, and at a 20% discount. And I heard from another wine club member who was there that day that they have BBQs and picnics for members, too! Who doesn't love to belong to the popular, funny, smart group that hands out free food and well-priced wine?! read more

Stopped in here at end of the day wine tasting. An interesting location; it looks like warehouse district or business park. The "Eight St Wineries" as they are called have 7 wineries here, plus MacRostie across the street. In Feb and Aug (8th) they do an open house for $20. I usually visit these much less than a tasting room on site, but we were driving by and I think I confused the name with Tin Roof, perhaps. Inside this 'warehouse' is an amazing, no expense spared (equipment wise) wine making facility. The pourer is very knowledgable and passionate about their wines. I give the wine maker a lot of credit for his focus on single vineyard, single varietal wines. I thought all the wines were well made - none won my over; but it was the end of the day, and the taste buds are often saturated after many wineries, so I am not holding my late p.m. judgement as my final say. If you are in Carneros, hit up Gloria F, Schug, Ceja, skip Kline and the other biggies, and consider hitting 1-2 of these on your way to downtown Sonoma, which is only ~4 more miles. cheers! read more

If you're coming here with the idea of snoozing wine in a grand castle or mansion across a massive estate, not only are you not in the right winery, you need get out of Sonoma. This place is unpretentious as it gets. It's behind a low iron-link fence, in the middle of a bare industrial park, in a large tin warehouse-like building. I think we even passed a hanger housing a small airplane on our meandering drive here. Inside is a simple tasting room, high ceiling, full of sunshine, with windows offering a glimpse to the brewing goodness in the back. A lot of locals seem to love this place, some stopping by for just a quick sip before hauling cases back to their cars and driving off. Sandy is a darling. Her expertise extending way past the wine she generously pours, from which wineries are open the latest, what's there to eat for a quick mid-day snack, to providing coupons for free nearby tastings and maps of the local area. All in all, very newbie-friendly. Both to those new to the area, and those that are new to wine. Just not to the wallet. This place might be well out of the way and cause a confused u-turn or two if you're a first-timer, but the experience will definitely be a rewarding one. read more

Tin Barn Vineyards actually looks like a tin barn. DH and I had difficulty finding this hidden warehouse because we were looking for a beautiful estate with a big sign and barrels of wine. Tin Barn is as plain and simple as it gets. The wine tasting is $6, but you can taste five or six wines. I felt a little rushed by the owner even though no one was there except us. And DH felt like the owner gave me a more generous pour than him. I guess we all have our problems. DH bought me a bottle of the 2007 Zinfandel from Napa Valley. I can't wait to finish the bar exam and open it to chug. Yes, chug. Studying for the bar makes me super crazy. read more

Tin Barn is so so great. I stumbled upon this winery a few years ago while researching tasting rooms for a bachelorette party I was hosting. It's such a fun, unpretentious atmosphere...and I always learn something about wine and wine-making while I'm there. Also, the wines are delicious! It's a warehouse winery, so don't expect the view that other places have. But it should be a definite stop on any southern Sonoma tour nonetheless. Yes. Every single wine is singular, solid, and delicious. As a tasting experience it's also surprisingly nice. Don't be put off by the location. Nobody's ever come here by accident. It's actually very nice inside, a perfect setting, but it's in a metal sided warehouse at the back end of an industrial park next to a small rural airport. Not exactly what you'd expect. Whatever you do, don't get scared and turn around. You really feel like it's not going to work out, but just go and try their wines. So, no vineyard (they buy all their grapes from here and there), no chateau, no cave tours. The winemaker makes half the wine for their own label, another half for smaller winemakers as what they call "custom crush" (he makes their wine for them). He also moonlights as a consulting winemaker for other wineries. So this is his passion. Some of the wines are a little odd, but amazingly good. The pinot this past year was heavily oaked in new charred French barrels, so it tasted like the wine equivalent of a barbecue grill. But in a good way, it was brilliant actually, like a new flavor. The Syrah was strong, and the peppery Napa zinfandel, top rate. Wines are in the $25-40 range, and tasting is $6, unless you talk them out of it... they pour as much as you could ever want, and don't mind pouring seconds and thirds. I guess, if you're traveling form out of town you're imagining a giant French castle or ultramodern piece of lego architecture.... I think, if you want the full experience you have to try a high end little winery like this one, or one of the several even smaller (seldom open) wineries in the same complex. We stopped in at Tin Barn yesterday as the first stop on our afternoon in Sonoma on the advice of Yelp and the promise that our membership in Zin Advocates and Producers (ZAP) would give us free tastings and a discount on bottle purchases. Yelp did it's job, unfortunately the winery didn't honor its advertizement for ZAP discounts. If they had, they would have gotten five stars here because the wine and experience were AWESOME. Their location is a bit unorthodox as you've seen from other posts here, but they've got pretty good signage starting at the driveway and going back to their door. Once you get inside of the tasting room, you really wouldn't know that they were in the middle of an industrial park. The fit and finish is on par with most on-site tasting rooms and they do all of their winemaking on site, so you can see the operation through the window in the tasting room. Sandy was also good enough to give us a quick tour of the operation. I highly recommend the Zin and the Pinot (we bought a bottle of each). The pinot had tons of flavor and complexity for the price point (~$30). The zin was offered with some chocolate (sacralidge in my book), which I passed on. The zin stood fine on its own and had the spice you'd expect from sonoma with a jammy flavor and texture that you typically see in a contra costa or lodi zin. They only do one white (Sav Blanc) and it had a really unique character, imparted by a partial barrel aging process where most would just keep it in stainless. Overall, every wine we tasted was PACKED with flavor and depth. This place reinforces my faith in the ability of wine makers in low-production environments. I definitely recommend that you stop by if you're making the trek through carneros from napa to sonoma (or vice versa). read more

My boyfriend and I went to Tin Barn Vineyards after reading all of the wonderful reviews here on Yelp. You guys did not disappoint!! It's true, it's kind of hard to find. We had to double back and drive around a couple of industrial buildings trying to find it but I'm glad we finally did. The 2005 zin was one of the best I've had. Their server, Amy, was very knowledgeable about the wines. She was fairly new there but was a delight! The owner, Mike, was there and he showed us the production room and even gave us a demonstration on "punching down" the wine in the vats, which was done by our lovely server, Amy. We were so impressed with the wines that we joined the wine club and purchased 4 bottles of zin. We had such a great time there on Saturday, that we went there again on Sunday. We had more great wine, great conversation with Amy and another wine club member couple visiting there from Reno. Walked away with 4 bottles of Pinot Noir and my very first ever Magnum of 2004 Cab Sauv. read more

So, I'm a liquor guy. Why? Liquor gets me into trouble. But I like being in that kind of trouble because it generally means ruckus...ruckus like: running at one of those speed limit radar detectors to see if it will track your speed, or staring at a chandelier in my bedroom and wondering how a pleather thigh high high heeled boot ended up stuck all the way up there. I've been becoming a bigger fan of wine ever since I moved to California, but until today it has never gotten me into liquor trouble...till I came to Tin Barn. Superb wines all the way down the list. Thanks to the sweetheart Sandy for knowing me better than I know myself and giving me the "what the hell is wrong with you" look when I wanted to pass on the Pinot Noir tasting. I generally am not a Pinot fan, but this was totally an exception. However, the big standout for me was the Napa Cab, of which I am now a proud owner of a bottle. Did I mention the tastings are *free* as well as *spectacular*. You need a reservation, but the staff are so cool, you don't need to worry about being on time to the minute (or half hour for that matter). The place is waaaay in the back of an industrial park in a frikkin warehouse. Trust the signs...do not think you are heading into a rapist den...just keep driving! The whole place is the ultimate in laid-backedness. If there were a bunch of smelly nerds and bags of open doritos, it would be a tech startup spot, but instead its full of super nice appreciative staff who give lovely impromptu "wine required" tours :). Did I mention that Sandy so deserves an amazing raise :-D. After I left, I did run by a speed limit radar sign to get my speed clocked (12mph!), though no pleather boots stuck to the ceiling tonight. I'll have to make that one happen after my next trip to Tin Barn. read more

I organized an offsite to Wine Country for my team at work and Tin Barn was one of the vineyards we visited as part of this excursion. They were nice enough to accommodate a big group (there were like 30 of us) which can be kind of rare for tasting rooms. When we arrived they had a nice table set up for us already w/ the right number of glasses and all the bottles ready to taste; the organization and forethought was definitely appreciated. I don't know too much about wine, but it seemed ok for its price (the bottles were like $20-50). They specialize in red wines and had a generous tasting menu -- I believe it was 1 white + 6 reds for $5. The place is located in like an office facility / storage unit looking type building, so if you're looking for like rolling hills with neat rows of grape bushes, you have come to the wrong place. (Shouldn't be a dealbreaker necessarily in my opinion -- just go to one of those before/or after; most look the same after you've been to 1 or a few anyway -- but I feel it's worth noting.) They also do a little tour of their facility where they show you some of the machines that are used to make the wine. I would not put this as high up as the MUST VISIT category for wine country but would certainly recommend a visit if it fits into your schedule etc. read more

After being very confused because of all the aluminum barn type buildings housing various industrial firms, you should be able to find it. Just trust the address and be persistent. I enjoyed a lot of the wine I had in a free tasting here last winter. I especially remember the reds being good. The decor inside is no frills, and the decor outside is...not really decor. Don't be fooled by the warehouse-looking exterior. Once you get inside, it's industrial chic meets modern art meets welcoming and knowledgeable vintners. It was a pretty quiet day here as they were fresh off a major wine festival the day before. I wasn't a huge fan of the Sauvignon Blanc, which was a little too mineral-y for my taste, and I didn't taste the reds (four of the five wines there were reds) because of the major teeth-staining factor, but the vintner was awesome enough to draw me a barrel tasting of the syrah rose, which had a really clean finish. She also gave us a mini-tour of the winemaking facilities. I don't know that I'd make the effort to come back here since it's a little out of the way, plus the wines aren't really to my taste. But I do want to shout out to this winery for comping all our tastings (normally $6, but we had a ton of coupons), accommodating my picky tastes and generally being really welcoming and informative (even giving us recommendations on where to go next). An unexpected surprise! We were on our way back home to Los Angeles when I decided to do a quick Yelp and found Tin Barn. The reviews said that you need a reservation, so I called and Sandy enthusiastically said, "Come on over!" Located in the back of an industrial lot, Tin Barn is a simple winery that purchases its wines from different vineyards. They don't mix their grapes unless creating a special blend. When we arrived, we were the only ones there. SWEET! I love having a winery all to ourselves. Sandy poured us some wines, did a quick tour of the wine barrels and gave us the history of how Tin Barn came to be. We loved the Cabs, Merlot and Zin. Ohhh.. the Zin. Hooray! Tin Barn is a MUST while in the Sonoma area. Everyone is right about the unexpected location, just follow the signs, and you'll end up in a very intimate, clean tasting room with a view of the machines used to produce the wine. I don't even like white wine, but the one that they make is exceptional - we bought 2 bottles. The Zinfandel was also one of the best I've ever had. I was SO excited to go to the Tin Barn with Yelp's reviews... but I was totally led astray. This was the only winery where I didn't buy anything. The wines tasted so watered down and didn't have that full flavor that I was looking for. It was cool that this winery was different than all of the others, but the service was OK. Wonderful little gem tucked away into a more industrial and non-descript warehouse area. They do a lot of bottling for other vintages but offer some really wonderful wines themselves. Was here for a Yelp event and Amy was so knowledgeable and descriptive in telling us the stories behind each wine we sampled. We even got to try some wine that hadn't been bottled yet. Be prepared for a simply nuts and bolts wine experience. You are headed to the back of a warehouse area to find this little warehouse with a cute kitchen/tasting room in the front. It is small and all opens up to the warehouse with all the processing tools and barrel storage. This place is simple and probably much smarter than the other wineries. Less overhead and everything small in one spot. They seem like they are newer and much smaller. The wines are all reds. Our guests with more sophisticated wine palates thought it was all just ok and that several really did not taste like same grape wines they had had and enjoy. The staff here was nice and very friendly and we did like that we could just walk back into the barrel room and take photos. The simplicity of this place was refreshing.
