The food is always fresh and tasty. Family always loves it. Pretty much nothing on the menu that we don't enjoy.

It's a little food shack next to Tru Tea. They just opened at the beginning of September 2024. They sell Asian food, mostly snack foods like Bao, pan-fried buns and dumplings, but they also had General Tao Chicken, wonton soup, and Japanese curry. I got an order of General Tao Chicken ($6.99) with no sesame seeds and without rice, as well as the Pan-fried Beef Bing ($9.99) for my husband and I to share as a snack. The portion of the General Tao Chicken was small, like an appetizer, which was expected for the price. It was a bit doughy with lots of breading, but still tasted good. It was dark meat. The sauce was sweet and not spicy at all. The beef bing (there were 2 per order) were a bit greasy but had good flavour and the dough wasn't too thick. They have 2 seats indoors but lots of outdoor seating. I guess they will be mostly a takeout place in the winter. Service was pleasant. I spoke with the owner and she said they opened the restaurant because her parents "wanted something to do." LOL. Not sure I'd want to run a restaurant/food truck in my golden years, but hey, if it makes them happy. I'm thrilled to have a new place in the neighbourhood that sells hot foods you can have as snacks. My husband and I often go for walks in the neighbourhood and sometimes I feel for some food, but just something snacky like a samosa or bao, so this place fits the bill perfectly. Looking forward to trying out their other items. Street parking only. (173)

The hubby recently got takeout from Nom Nom a couple of weeks ago, and forgot how good it was, while it has been a couple of years since I've had takeout from here. We ordered the sesame balls, veggie spring rolls, sweet potato croquettes, tofu spicy fried noodles, and Singapore noodles. The sesame balls and the veggie spring rolls were reminiscent of the stuff you'd get at an AYCE restaurant, but they were still good. The sweet potato croquettes was a first for me, and they were very much like a large hash brown, but super fluffy inside. My suggestion is to wait for them to cool down a bit and eat them warm or room temperature. My toddler loved these, but I thought they were just OK. The Korean spicy fried noodles was the star of the show, although a bit too greasy for my liking, they did hit the spot. I really enjoyed their take on cooking tofu. I think they took deep fried puffed tofu, flattened it down and fried it with the noodles, where it resembled sliced pork. There was a lot of nice color to it, as well as a slight char, and the texture was amazing. Keep it mind, it was a tad greasy as well. I didn't care for the Singapore noodles. My hubby loves this dish, but said he's had it made better else where, so its all personal preference. I do like that you can customize a lot of the meals into vegetarian meals, so major kudos to that. I don't crave Asian cuisine all that often, so I don't think I will be rushing back, but it was nice to switch things up and try out something new.

I had the Chicken Pad Thai $12 and asked them to hold the bean sprouts. Overall I thought it was ok, but nothing great. I was hoping that it would have some other vegetables in it like cabbage, carrots or peppers, but it was basically just noodles, egg, and chicken. It was really un-photogenic and tasted like it looked. I liked that the chicken was lean and there weren't any fatty nor gristlely bits. The flavour itself was ok, not too salty nor too sweet. It didn't taste like ketchup or anything like that thankfully. It was just kind of unremarkable IMO. I would say it was along the lines of Thai Express, but more expensive :(

It is a counter in the Queen street fare, that was opened a year or two ago with a high end decor, comfortable environment, and other interesting vendors. The food our party tried (grilled pork on vermicelli, General Tso chicken on rice, spring rolls and pork belly bun) were all well seasoned and fresh. The quantities are on the slightly smaller size but the flavours and freshness are there! The presentation is very nice too. Definitely will have this again.

The Short Version: Amazing food at this Indonesian…read morerestaurant. The Laksa was so rich and flavourful. The Long Version: My husband and I had dinner at Golden Ox Noodles and we absolutely loved it. We started with the Risoles ($10) and I had the Seafood Laksa ($23) and my husband had the Seafood Twist and Sizzle ($19) and a Tsingtao ($7). It was my first time having Risoles and the style of snack reminded me of Sri Lankan mutton rolls. It's like a thin crepe with filling that's coated in breadcrumbs and then deep-fried. The Risoles were filled with ground beef, peas, carrots and corn. They had mayo drizzled over top and were served with some cucumber and carrot garnish. We enjoyed them. They were piping hot and crunchy on the outside. They were small though, a bit smaller than an egg roll. We both got our main dishes medium spice and they were a true medium. A good amount of heat that made my nose run, lol. My seafood Laksa was so delicious. The broth was so rich from the coconut milk and really flavourful from all the spices. I got 2 very large shrimp, 2 pieces of squid, 2 fish balls, 2 fish cake slices, and 2 tofu puffs cut in half. The noodles were round rice noodles like the ones you get in the Vietnamese Bun Bo Hue. The soup also came with cooked bean sprouts. My husband tried some of my Laksa and he really enjoyed it too. I rarely ever drink the broths of soups (I usually just eat the solids and leave the liquids), but I couldn't stop with this one, haha. And when I had had enough, my husband was like "are you gonna finish that?" And he drank the rest of the broth. Lol. My husband loved his seafood Twist and Sizzle, which was a noodle stir-fry with shrimp, squid and fish cake slices. He opted for udon noodles but you can also get egg noodles. I had a taste and I liked it too. He was sweating a bit at the end due to the spice level, lol. But he commented that it wasn't just spicy it had depth of flavour, and I agree. Overall it was such an enjoyable meal. I was too full for dessert but they had Cendol and also Pandan cake. I'll need to skip the appetizer next time so I can have dessert ;) Service was pleasant. Decor is nice. It's a great place for a date, outing with friends, business lunch and more. The restaurant just opened in August 2025. The space was Festival of India before and before that it was Allegro. There is limited parking behind the restaurant, but we just parked on the street. There's paid parking along the main drag but if you're willing to walk a bit further there's free parking along the side streets. Review #198 (2025)

The sauce (which we discovered later we could purchase and did) was hot/savory and sweet. Delicious. I got the Rice Ribbon Rhapsody which is essentially a chicken soup...this was a meaty and flavorful soup, great for gluten free folks, lots of chicken, cilantro and green onions. It was served hot as were the wings. My husband ordered the Indonesian Special which was jasmine rice with chicken and spices, a crispy fried egg and rice crisps. The dish was also served hot and was good, but not quite as good as the soup according to him. There are many gluten free items on the menu and they are careful to note that they also use peanuts in some of the dishes. (For those who have allergies). The menu is lovely and not overwhelming. They know what they are good at and what they want to serve and they do that well and with great love. We had lovely conversation with the staff and felt well taken care of. The restaurant is intimate with a lovely ambiance. We would come back for sure!

The Long Version: I love supporting small independent businesses and have found great eats in food courts, at food trucks and in industrial parks. So when I saw that the Place d'Orleans food court had a new vendor that wasn't a chain, I wanted to check out. I first noticed this eatery in July 2025 but it opened in May 2025. The bonus was that the mall was having this promotion for all of July 2025 where if you spend $25 or more at one participating food court vendor after 5pm Monday -Saturday you take your receipt to Guest Services and you get a $10 mall gift card. What a great deal! And Umi Eatery was on the list of participating vendors! Umi Eatery sells pan-asian fare. They have Bento boxes, teriyaki, ramen, udon, poke bowls, bibimbap, Tanghulu, mochi, bubble tea and more. I got the chicken teriyaki ($9.99) and the beef bibimbap ($16.99). The chicken teriyaki was fantastic! Easily the best chicken teriyaki I've ever had at a food court. I found it superior to places like Teriyaki Experience and Edo Japan. And even better than some sit-down restaurants I've had it at. It was full of flavour and not oily/greasy at all. And it wasn't too saucy or wet. It had chicken, rice, bean sprouts, broccoli, red cabbage and carrots. The portion size was good. I will definitely get this again. The beef bibimbap was very respectable for fast food. Not as good as most sit-down restaurants, but better than some sit-down restaurants I've been to. It had white rice, carrots, zucchini, bean sprouts, kimchi, beef and a sunny side up fried egg. It came with a side of Gochujang. I enjoyed it, but found the chicken teriyaki more flavourful and better bang for my buck. I shared both dishes with my parents and they agreed with my assessment. Service was excellent. The man working there was both the cashier and the cook and he was very courteous and efficient. He even advised me of the mall promotion when he gave me my receipt. I had taken advantage of the mall promotion with another vendor in the food court previously and not only did they not mention the promotion but they didn't even give me a receipt and I had to ask for it. So customer service at Umi Eatery reigns supreme! Lol. I returned on a subsequent visit and got their chicken teriyaki again and their Takoyaki (6 pieces for $6.99). The Takoyaki was refried from frozen, but still very tasty for what it was. And they were generous with the bonito flakes. I asked for no sesame seeds and they happily accommodated. They are my new favourite vendor in this food court! Lots of free parking in the mall parking lot. Also very accessible by public transit since Place d'Orleans is an OC Transpo hub. The crispy chicken tasted like cut up chicken nuggets, but the noodles and vegetables were good. The lowest spice level (mild) was pretty spicy, lol. The Long Version: Noodlebox is a Canadian company that started in Victoria, BC in 2001 as a food cart. This location in Vanier was the first one in Ottawa. At the time of the writing of this review there is another location in Stittsville, but those are the only 2 in Ottawa. They make your food to order and there are a lot of customizations, like you can choose the noodles, the amount of spice, and you can add or remove items. I got the Crispy Shanghai Chicken Box. In the store it sells for $15.95 but UberEats was having a BOGO (buy one get one free) deal so it was $18.95 for 2. I got my order through UberEats. I chose Hokkien noodles, which are thick noodles popular in Malaysian dishes. I also requested no bean sprouts, no canola oil, and no sesame seeds and my order came as requested. I feel the dish was still a bit greasy/oily, but I guess less so than it would have been (?). The flavour was pretty good. And despite choosing the least spicy option available on the app (mild/medium) it was pretty spicy, lol. Not sure if they made a mistake, but i feel it was a true medium, not mild at all. I got this to share with my parents and my mom could only eat a tiny bit due to the spice. My dad loved it though. So he and I ate most of it. Lol. The noodles were a nice springy and chewy texture. The vegetables included were carrots, cabbage a tiny bit of broccoli. There were also green onions and crushed peanuts. The chicken tasted like cut up chicken nuggets. There was more breading than meat and it was processed meat, not like real chicken breast. This is the only thing I didn't like. I will need to try a different stir-fry and get their grilled chicken and see how that is. Service was courteous and efficient. My food was ready in less than 10 minutes. There was only one staff member there. He was mopping the floors when I arrived. He stopped mopping the floors, washed his hands and then helped me. I liked this. Bonus points for good hand hygiene. There are 2 tables for 2 to dine in. It's mostly a takeout joint. Ambiance is fast food restaurant. For the price that I paid and the fact that it's fast food made to order with the option for lots of customizations, I think it was not bad. I didn't like the overly breaded chicken nuggets that they passed for crispy chicken though, lol. I would return to try their other options. This restaurant is located in the Donald Plaza where the Winners, Staples and Dollarama are. There's free parking in the plaza parking lot. Review #197 (2025)
