I brought part of my hanging lamp in for repair. It had two transformers in it and a bunch of wires. I didn't catch the gentleman's name that helped me, but he took one look at it and said, "We don't do that." And in the same breath, "But go to Southwest Electronics on 5th -- ask for Raymond -- he does that sort of thing, has that sort of stuff." He even gave me directions, and then suggested I call bc he didn't know the hours Raymond kept. I called Raymond from the parking lot, and he DID have the part, knew exactly what I was talking about. A shop where they help you no matter what is rare these days. If you need a lamp or a chandelier or a bulb or anything light-related, support these folks. Wow what a hilariously awful experience. Les or wes or whatever that guys name is watches me like a lump struggle to carry in a 50lb lamp and offers no help. He then fecklessly tries to unscrew screws and can't figure a damn thing out and then tells me to write my name and phone number down and he will call me when it's done but they are moving to north Burnet. I asked for a receipt for proof I left my lamp because he is so low functioning and also, TIPLERS, that is how the world works. He says we haven't given receipts in 35 years which is false I have been doing business with the late Mr. Tipler for decades prior to his passing. They did used to give receipts. But he continues to repeat proudly that proof of a left item is simply not something they offer. He said to pick up the lamp next week which I can't do because I'm having neurosurgery tomorrow. I said so I will pick it up on north burnet end of month and he said no I won't be there. I said I'm taking the lamp what an awful pain you have been. On the way out I passed another customer and said good luck with that jerk and then he launched into his own story of mistreatment from this gem of a guy Les/Wes. My most recent trip on a Saturday morning was to find new shades for my oriental vase lamps. Neal was patient and had such a good sense of design, size and shape. I brought my living room lamps in to be repaired and am exceptionally pleased with the service and quality of work that the owner performed on my lamps. They are rather old, purchased in 2009, and I was not sure they even could be repaired. They needed new 3-way switches, and an electrical cord. On Jan 4,2022, I agreed to let Tipler's fix my desk lamp. They told me that the repairs would take three weeks. Fast forward to the beginning of March... I hadn't heard anything from the shop, so I phone to inquire how repairs were going. I was told that the lamp hasn't yet been looked at yet, and it would be another three weeks before anyone could. They phoned two weeks later & said "It's fixed & ready to be picked up". Upon arriving at the store, I'm informed that not only has anyone worked on the lamp, but no one works on the type of lamp I have!!! WHAT???? Is this actually happening? Incredible lack of honesty, professionalism & customer service! I'm urging everyone who considers using this business to do yourself a huge favor- look elsewhere! Well, after being in Austin for lo these many years, I have the good fortune to have built up a stable of workrooms that can provide just about any service that my business requires. My wife recently commented that almost every lamp in our home was either restored by Tipler's, designed by Tipler's or purchased at Tipler's. Neil Tipler at Tipler's Lamp Shop has always come through for me, without fail. Over the years, Tiplers has literally turned my boxes of rusting horribleness into beautiful, glowing light sources. From an 1850s Wedgwood vase with a broken rim that they expertly ground down and created into a stunningly beautiful lamp, to taking a hand-carved artist creation and handcrafting the needed wooden accents to turn it into a show-stopping piece of lighting, Tipler's can do anything. Now, listen closely my friends, the old adage of "You get what you pay for" is the thing to remember when using Tipler's. If you want the VERY best job by the VERY best craftsmen, you will pay for it. To put it plainly, Tipler's ain't cheap. But then the finished product is always a demonstration of exactly why they are not. The service you receive and the quality of the job they do has always more than justified their pricing for me. They have completed several dozen jobs for me personally as well as jobs for my clients. If you just want to jam a replacement cord from Lowe's up your grandma's old lamp and call it a day, then Tipler's is probably not for you. But if you want a lamp that will make those who see it exclaim 'Holy crap that's the coolest lamp I have ever seen!" you need to use Tipler's. Both of the lamps in our master bedroom had broken knobs (the plastic sheared off and you couldn't turn them!) Needless to say, it was annoying to have to read by flashlight before going to bed. my wife brought a lamp in for repair. She explained that I had installed a new switch and I could tell power was reaching the socket, but the lamp wouldn't work. I could see how I might get a switch wrong, who knows. Of course the folks at Tipler talked down to her and made her feel terrible, but she left the lamp anyway. She picked it up and was told the switch was installed wrong. Strange, but ok. Of course the lamp didn't work when we got it home. We bought the exact bulb the manufacturer recommended. exactly. I tested the lamp and power was still getting to the bulb socket, but it wouldn't come on. I brought it back this time to avoid interacting with Tipler employees. I spoke with a nice woman, explained what was going on and she agreed to talk to the tech. Probably worth mentioning that the lamp is a large floor lamp that weighs a good 40-50 pounds. My wife picked it up and the same thing happened - treated rudely, told we were using the wrong bulb, talked down to - that seems to be Tipler policy. At least the lamp was working? no - of course not. the solution? jiggle the bulb. Tipler is a lamp shop that can't fix lamps. You decide.... read more

I had a pretty bad experience elsewhere, so I was skeptical that anyone could repair my lamp. The other place over promised and under-delivered. Not Tipler's--quite the opposite. They told me they could repair the lamp, a great MCM retractable flying-saucer fixture. They said it would take a week or so. Imagine my excitement when they called 48 hours later!! Thank God there is still a Tipler's Lamp Shop. I loved working with Neil Tipler who is recently deceased. Les who worked with him for 20 years is running the shop now. I came in with 2 lamps I could not fix that were squirelly or not working for me and he fixed them both while I was waiting in the shop and replaced the light socket in one that he thought had a burn in it. I had a cheap walmart shade for one lamp but he showed me another shade which was a lot more expensive but I took home and it was so much nicer. The shade was white and light and nice looking. I replaced another lamp with an intact shade that was darker at home for this new lamp and shade and I couldn't be happier. I put the lamp with the darker shade somewhere else. If you can afford it get the better shade. Just do it. The room will be filled with more light. You will enjoy it so much more over the months and years than a cheaper shade. Because of chemotherapy I can't change overhead lights and am dependent on lights that I can reach easily to replace burnt out bulbs. This just fills my world with much more light. read more

I visited Tipler's looking for a lamp shade and lamp parts. I found them to be outrageously over-priced. A replacement lamp cord $16, a replacement lamp socket $17. Both available at HD for about a third the cost. Exact same items. I understand the challenges of small, indy businesses competing with corp chains, but these prices were rip-off. As further proof of Tipler's insane prices, I point out a lamp made out of an old Ball jar, just a cheap light socket stuck on an old Ball jar. Price? $ 125.00 read more

None of the staff was wearing a mask when I took the lamp in or picked it up. Massive amounts of inventory sitting around in a close dark area. It felt very unsafe. I asked the sales person why they weren't wearing masks and she said something like we don't have to and then said she would put one on if it mattered. I was so rattled by the unhealthy atmosphere that I failed to notice that the lamp pole installed was a full 6" taller than the original. But nothing would compel me to enter that store again. read more

Just got back from Tipler's. Sarah M is absolutely right about the setting. I am just excited to find someone to repair a very expensive and very delicate chandelier that we had taken down recently. We plan to repair the light kit and extend it by about 3 feet. Neil was very helpful, saw no problem with doing the job, and informed me that he "hasn't failed one lamp yet." I took four old lamps here to be repaired and they did an excellent, old-world job on three of them. The fourth, my most cherished, they said they could not find similar glass for the replacement shade, and so could not restore it to same condition. He really, really seemed to know his business. It's just hard to believe that in all the world, with all the globalization and shipping options, not to mention custom glass work, there wasn't some recommendation or option or referral he could think of for me, and that made me sad. I love this lamp enough to pay for custom glass work, if I knew where to go or whom to ask. I will probably take it to LA on my next visit there and see if I can find a solution. I was still very satisfied with my visit to Tipler's for basic lamp repair; they are clearly upstanding and skilled. Probably even with complex repair; just not hard-to-find glass, in my case, at least. Incidentally, they don't seem to restore. Just repair. I have an old doctor's room standing lamp they did a great job repairing, but I mentioned cleaning and restoration, and I did not see evidence of such being done. Nonetheless, I was satisfied with the price. And he is is a very handsome sort of man; I loved his attractive, foreign air of deep and mysterious lamp knowledge, paired with an accented soft-spoken, gentle moving manner. I have a standing lamp that I bought at Target about 10 years ago, but during a move, the turn switch was bent. It's not a fancy lamp, but I really like it and didn't want to have to look for a new one. I brought it to Tipler's hoping they could save it.
