This is a unique store. Ms. Brady has lots of antique and other lamps/lighting including a massive chandelier fit for an elegant ballroom. The repair work is excellent. I love this store. read more

The owner was pleasant, my only complaint is she quoted me $45 to replace the light kit on a pendant light, then I was charged $75 at checkout. I think that was wayyyyyy overpriced for what I had done. read more

I'm sad at the bad reviews because they really do good work. The shop has been in business for 57 years and the owner is in her 80's. She is not always open when she should be because she is elderly and doing her best. They have absolutely AMAZING lighting and lamps. She is a sweetheart and if she saw someone in the shop, she absolutely wants to talk to everyone. Sometimes she gets overwhelmed, but if you give her a little grace for her slowness, she is a wealth of information. This place is a fraudulent business. They do not have the technical competencies to repair electrical appliances. Also, the old lady behind the counter was rude and belligerent. I brought in an antique lamp that had been rewired within the last year. I told the old woman at the counter that I only wanted the plug replaced. After refusing to give me a quote for the work or a claims ticket for the job, she assured me that work would be completed in 3-4 days. A week later the work was not only incomplete, but the old woman had tried to rewire the entire lamp, socket and all --after I had explicitly told her not to replace the *brand new* socket and only to replace the plug. In the process of performing this unnecessary and noncommissioned work, she BROKE my lamp. I received the lamp in pieces-- and the woman tried to charge me for this "work". I refused to pay and took the pieces of my lamp. I'll also add that the plug replacement (the whole reason I brought the lamp in to begin with) was never even attempted. I try to support local businesses, but I hope this place goes out of business. My experience at this store was one of the worst I've ever received. After giving this place our household's business more than once (buying a lamp and having another repaired), my spouse walked in to the store today to ask about where he might find an antique light bulb and was totally ignored by the owner, who happened to be on the phone. Not one glance, "just a minute,"'"be with you shortly," or anything. After five minutes of this he walked out and will not return. Any business that doesn't observe basic courtesy shouldn't survive. read more

They showed up when they said they would, proactively kept me informed & were polite & customer focused the entire time. I know others who think this is the absolute best spot in Austin, but sadly, that wasn't my experience. I dropped off a lamp which needed a minor repair. (I had attempted to make the repair myself, and while it was functional, I thought it could be done better, and turned it over to the experts, but bear in mind that my retail price on the part needed was about $3.00). They performed the repairs and called within a couple of weeks to tell me it was ready. When I went to pick it up, I spent at least 10 minutes wandering about the store with no one coming to help me, in spite of a rather loud charm that sounds when you enter that I activated at least twice. When I finally was able to raise someone by calling out several times, a rather annoyed looking woman asked what I needed. I gave her my name and told her I was there to get my lamp. After rummaging around for several minutes she asked for a description and finally appeared several minutes later with it. I went to pay the bill and was absolutely stunned to find out that the 20 minute repair (and that's what it took me. I imagine if I did it every day, I could shave that time considerably) cost $60.00! While the lamp was functional, the harp was not straight, and I wouldn't describe the work as having been done with great care. While wandering about waiting to be helped I noticed that they had carried the same shades for my chandelier that I had just purchased at another shop. I had paid $21. Theirs were priced at $39. It's a charming little store, but their every action told me they neither needed or appreciated my business. read more

What a fabulous local store. more than 53 years and the service hearkens back to a time you stopped and chatted, and got to know people. Not only that, but my lamp was repaired at a very decent price and works perfectly. Also it was done inside 3 days. I love this store and have been a customer for over 40 years. We inherited from our mothers different lamps that needed repairing. One was a lovely floor lamp that used mogul base light bulbs, and it was repaired and is beautiful. We have bought several lamp shades for our lamps through the years through Brady's. If something is broken, Betty, the owner, can find the parts to fix it. We have bought all sizes of lamps from Betty to go into different areas of our home. We took her one of our lamps and she redid it and even colored it the blue that we needed. If anything needs repairing, Betty has an excellent repairman who can fix anything. It is fun to browse through the store, get lots of ideas, or see things that you cannot do without! We have a gadget on each of our nightstands from Brady's that we can use to turn off our lamps when retiring for the night and not have to reach up inside the lamp to turn it off. I highly recommend this business! read more

I took in an antique floor fan to possibly just have the switch replaced. Next thing I know they are buying a motor for it, after I advised them nothing more than a switch as financially we are unable to afford anything more. After I arrived to pick it up, they practically begged me to sell it to them. I told then several times it is very sentimental and it is NOT for sale. Oh, and by the way, the motor was fine before I took it to them. I had to take it home completely disassembled. The wires was ripped out of the motor. The lighting part of the business is beautiful, but do not recommend for anything else unless you get it in writing. They would not reassemble it. I was charged 35.00 for the estimate AND it was in pieces. read more

I was a walk in customer. The nice lady stopped what she was doing helped me with a tiffany type lamp with three different issues! Fixed and good to go! She was super!!! I looked at other places and they wanted to charge me $145 just to look at it!!! She's super reasonable and nice to deal with! I highly recommend to keep an Austin business going!!!! I love this place. IF you need ANYTHING having to do with a lamp, finials, shades, re-wiring, or you just need a new and unique lamp for a special nook or spot in your home this is the place. They are expensive, but the only place in town for parts on antique lamps. read more

Brady's repaired an antique table lamp that has been in my family for over 100 years. It needed new wiring, some solder work, new sockets, and repair of the finial. They restored it to new looking, not only by doing all the repairs, but also by bringing all the brass (and the cobalt blue and gold base) back to life. With the addition of 2 red silk socket pulls, it has been transformed and is ready for the next 100 years!! Thank you Betty and Priscilla, you obviously love what you do! read more

BEWARE of Brady's Distinctive Lighting!! We took a vintage fan in to have the electric cords replaced. The clerk said that Betty Brady would contact us upon her return from vacation to discuss the repair and how much it would cost. The only contact we had was to tell us the fan was ready. When we went to pick it up, they charged us $250.00!!!! The cord they used to repair it looks like a standard cord from Home Depot!! When we questioned the outrageous cost, the clerk said we could just give them the fan if we didn't want to pay it! I'm not one to post complaints, but people need to be aware of these people. Stay away from this place folks! read more

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! I emailed Brady's about the possibility of selling some vintage light fixtures. After initially indicating interest, they ignored me for the better part of 3 weeks as I continually tried to get them to respond. Finally, I got a response indicating that I was being ignored because they wanted me to put a price on the lighting. (Apparently they don't "make offers") I did this immediately and have been completely ignored ever since. If you appreciate common courtesy from someone you are looking to do business with, you do not want to do business with Brady's Distinctive Lighting. The only thing I found to be "distinctive" about them is their level of rudeness in treating me as if I did not even exist. read more
