This is a quaint place with a lot of character. They accommodated our large group with a couple of long table set ups. Appies had been pre-ordered for us and included gluten free and lactose free options. It was typical pub fare. Ie. wings, carrots & celery, deep fried things... not food I'd typically order myself. Located in the historic Prince George Hotel building, this is a good spot for beer and food that's well above pub fare. Menu ranges from usual grill items to meat pies, curries, boxtys, and several fish offerings. The beer menu is not the longest you'll ever see but solidly impressive. Amaze your friends by ordering the 23 oz Hoegaarden belgian wheat, which comes in a freakishly large glass. We were there on a warm summer evening and dined outside where we took in the sights of Kingston. Beware if they seat you next to the big red wooden doors; these hide the dumpster ---and you will take in the smells of Kingston along with the sights. We had the fish and chips which featured two light, flaky, and perfectly fried pieces of halibut and a Thai themed plate of mussels which was also very good. Service is smart, friendly, and attentive. On this busy Friday they seemed a bit stretched but kept up with it. As we finished up live music commenced inside and there was quite a lively bar crowd. Sunday night so the place was quiet. Our server, Samantha, was great! Super friendly and helpful with suggestions on the menu. The prices are fair as the food quality is good. Great selection for all of us, me being a vegetarian this is often not the case when eating out. We all had the pot pies..... meat pies for the group and everyone loved them. Got into Kingston on a Friday evening and we were excited to see that the bar was an authentic looking English pub. We were sorry it was too packed to eat in. The main area bar was big but not pub looking. We were surprised it was pretty empty for a Friday night and being 8pm. The Fish and Chips were good and they were nice enough to substitute mashed for the chips however, the mashed tasted like instant and the gravy also tasted chemically based. Our waiter was busy wrapping cutlery and never noticed our drinks were empty and he never stopped by to say how's everything after dropping the food off where he might of seen we needed things. I had the beef with mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding and fries and was still hungry. This restaurant is situated in one of the oldest buildings in Kingston, and if you take the city ghost walk tour (which is actually situated to the side of the entrance to their bar), you'll find out that the place is also haunted. So already bonus points in my books! The pub has a beautiful interior and their staff is very friendly. They also have local singers that perform there on certain evenings. The food isn't bad but it isn't great. It's your typical 3-star quality food. My only advice with this place is that you'll want to avoid it during the winter. With awesome old buildings, comes a serious lack of insulation, and lack of insulation apparently means shivering while waiting for your food, and freezing dishes. Cold dishes aren't a big deal until you order something along the lines of tea and find out that even after refilling the pot twice with supposed hot water, your tea is only warm. Old building or not, it's a little silly to have to deal with this. So check this place out during the summer and you'll have a good time. It may not blow your mind, but it's a reliable place. read more

This review is going to be a bit of a mixed bag. I have had both fantastic and abysmal experiences here. On a good day, their blarney chips (waffle fries topped with tomatoes, green onions and cheese) will leave you begging for more, and the smoked chicken grilled flatbread will have you beg some more after that. The boxties and Guinness crocks are ideal comfort food on a cold winter day, and the fish & chips aren't half bad. On a bad day, I've had dried out boxties that tasted like papier-mâché and a lamb shank that smelled oddly of urine. The curry is the only thing that I find consistent here, but unfortunately it is consistently sub par. It lacks in flavour and the meat is always over cooked. While the food is random and inconsistent, the ambience and service have never failed me at Tir Nan Og. The servers are super friendly and the interior is beautiful with a lovely antique feel. When you go inside, it really feels like you're at a traditional pub in the Irish country side (though a lot cleaner and well-maintained). The drinks menu is extensive and creative. Last summer they had this drink that was a dark ale mixed with black currant syrup (I wish I can remember the name now), and it was positively brilliant. There is also a nice patio area that is perfect for people-watching in the summer. Oh, and they have Karaoke nights on Thursdays - always a hilarious good time for all. To conclude, Tir Nan Og is always a fun place for hanging out, but the food can be a bit of a gamble. Tip: If you end up there on a "bad food day", pop by Mia Gelato next door for a dessert. This is a place my husband and I have wanted to go to for a while. We finally squeaked in today for our Valentine's Day dinner (we're both introverts and prefer to go out on a less crowded day) and it was worth the wait! The atmosphere is nice - a fairly traditional Irish pub. While neither of us really drink, we looked at the drinks menu and there is truly something for everyone. My husband stuck to his traditional Pepsi and I got the shaken lemonade with stone fruit juices. It was SO good that I'd go back just for that drink on a warm summer's day. The bartender mixed the drink up for me and poured it into a nice mason-jar type cup and it made the experience a little more special since we don't typically have that sort of experience when we go out. Onto the food. It was fantastic. I ordered the shephard's pie and changed my side salad to a caesar salad (it was a great caesar with a lovely amount of cheese, dressing and acidity) and my husband ordered the chicken tikka masala boxty. A boxty, as we found out, is a traditional Irish potato pancake. It comes with a side salad as well and my husband also ordered a delicious caesar. Our food was fantastic, flavourful, very fresh, very warm and obviously homemade - none of this crappy pub food that is flavourless or just deep fried. We both agreed that it was fantastic and the Guiness gravy in my pie was amazing. Dessert (yes, they have a dessert menu!) was great. The vanilla ice cream was fantastic and very vanilla-y (sometimes I can find vanilla ice cream to be bland, but this was anything but!) and our desserts were both piping hot and delicious. The husband got a salted brownie with a caramel or butterscotch swirl on top and ice cream while I got the apple crumble pie. The apple crumble pie is heavenly - the best parts of both desserts. It has a buttery, flakey pie crust on the bottom, a deliciously cooked apple and cinnamon filling and a crunchy crumble topping. Overall, a GREAT meal and a definite must-have for any fan of pub food or that atmosphere. The waiters were extremely friendly, personable and even the bartender came and served us if his co-workers were swamped and he had a moment. I'd recommend this place 10 times over. read more

The boyfriend and I travel to Kingston several times a year, and we make a point of always coming here. They've got a good selection of beer and liquor, the bar is huge and beautiful, and we've always enjoyed the music. The food is decent, typical pub food. The servers are either MIA or amazing, there is no in-between. If they're MIA, you can expect very slow service (even if you come here in the middle of the day for lunch and there is nobody else there), and it can be very cold in the winter, but those are the only issues I've ever had. I always have a great time here & will continue to stop by every time I'm in Kingston. read more

On Sunday evening myself and 3 friends decided to stop in for dinner. This place looked perfect for us and the warm, cozy atmosphere was just the pub we thought we were looking for. But as we were enjoying our first round and settling in I watched a table next to us get comped an entire meal and became hesitant about ordering food in your establishment. We spoke frankly with our server about it and she assured us this wasn't usual so we decided to trust her and order anyway. Oh and just for the record the comp meal was a burger served raw. Suffice to say I should have trusted my hesitation over our server. Myself and one of my friends both got violently ill with food poisoning from our meals and missed out on two days of our vacation because of it. I am not sure what is going on in your kitchen but from what I have experienced what you are serving is downright dangerous, you should be ashamed of what you are serving people. read more

Came here for lunch, busy day (Canada Day) so expected a bit of a wait. Waited an hour and a half, barely saw our waiter. Upon receiving our food the Southern Fried Fish I had ordered was not only cold but tasted over-cooked (strong carbon taste in the batter). Finally he returned and asked to have a fresh entree and upon receiving it, it was no longer cold however it became readily apparent that the strong carbon taste was from old fryer oil not being changed. Warning!!! I went to Tir Nan Og on a Saturday in November at 5:30 and the manger wanted to turn myself and my 92 year old nana away. He said "the restaurant is reserved all night, come back after 8:30"!!! Luckily one of the waitresses rescued us and ushered us inside, there was less then 20 ppl inside maybe 1/5 of the table occupied. Our meal was amazing Guinness steak and mushroom boxty (traditional stew ladled over a potato pancake). We were done our meal in less then an hour still no one had shown up to sit in thiwa "booked solid restaurant", so we decided to have coffee and desert. Don't order the bread pudding bites they were terrible, seriously I've never had a bad bread pudding till tonight, which is a shame as they used to be famous for their 200+ year old traditional recipe. When we left the pub just after 7 still no one had shown up, no one except the band that was setting up. Seriously this is kingston not Toronto, November not August and a pub not a club. Who the hell turns away paying customers, I must have seen 70-100 ppl turned away between 5:30-7:00. Who is this benefiting? Not the wait staff who aren't getting tips, not the bar who isn't selling beer and certainly not the owner who is losing revenue. I used to love this pub, been going since I was a kid, but if locals aren't welcome anymore on a weekend to come in for a meal, then I will head next door to the Brew Pub, they at least have always found room for guests.
