My wife got the fish and chips on a visit here a couple of years ago and swore we had to return when we went back to Kingston together. This time she got it with haddock and once again found it excellent. I sampled a bite and had to agree. Batter was light and not soggy, fish was flaky and fresh tasting. She likes the fact that you can get a small order here, a one piece and fries. I actually wasn't in the mood for fish and chips, and ordered a cheese sausage and fry combo that was the daily special, and this was a good choice. The sausage was large, and it came on a hoagie bun large enough to contain it but not bury it in bread. A generous amount of grilled onions topped it, and the sausage itself was outstanding. It was a smoked kielbasa (or something very like it) with flecks--not gooey gobs--of cheese in it. I love sausage of all kinds, eaten it at places with highly touted housemade links, and this stood up to any of those, and outshone some. (Wish I had a pic, but I was so hungry I just tucked in.) The fries were a little soft, but tasted good nonetheless. Beer selection is good, with mix of craft brews and domestics. Service we received was outstanding. The laid back local pub atmosphere was perfect for recovering from a morning of fighting our way through the tourist-clotted streets of Kingston. This place is a local gem. read more

This place is known for their fish and chips and I did NOT get fish and chips. That should be noted. The food was decent, I ended up getting the meatloaf and a Greek salad. The meatloaf was good and so was the salad, but nothing really blew me away. It was kind of bland, boring and basic. Definitely could do better. The meatloaf was tasty but underwhelming, had to add a lot of salt and pepper. The Greek chicken salad was underseasoned as well, minimal feta and the chicken was BORING. So plain. Definitely could have been executed better. Overall, if you're gonna come here, maybe just stick with the fish and chips. Why mess with a good thing? read more

Stopped into the Pilot House for a bite of lunch while in the area. Was able to get seated on the patio which was a bit tight seating wise but had a comfortable atmosphere. The Pilot House doesn't have a very large menu, mostly fish and chips and British pub fare. I opted for the 2 piece cod and subbed out the fries for a Greek salad. The fries looked quite good but as was traveling thought a side salad would be a better choice. The fish was fairly good with a slightly heavy batter but not too heavy. The Greek salad was ok, nothing remarkable, with a fair amount of Romain lettuce, tomatoes, red and green peppers, cucumber, and canned black olives. The Greek dressing for the salad was a bit lackluster as well. All the substitutions were an up-charge so ended up being quite expensive for the two of us. read more

This place is the third in a trinity of places I like to hit when I'm in Kingston. Different from the homebrewy-ness of the Kingston Brewing Company (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/kingston-brewing-company-limited-kingston) and the dead-on Irishness of The Toucan (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/the-toucan-kingston), the Pilot House is a great small hole-in-the-wall British pub. It sits close to the Kingston downtown waterfront and definitely shows its age. It's been around for a while and has the beer-stains and marks to prove it. Do not, however, think for a second that this place is not a good place to go. Treat yourself to a place at the bar, stand, and order a plate of the best fish and chips in town. At least that's what they say, but you'd be hard-pressed to find better in Kingston. What makes it really good? You can pick your fish, from haddock to halibut. Add to this some great pub food like Scotch eggs, cheese and union pies, and thirteen beers on tap and you've got a place that is fantastic to get to. This place has really gone downhill over the past ten years. Where to start....First, our order could not have been more confused than it was. Two of us ordered cod and received haddock. The two-piece haddock ordered by another person in our party came to the table as a one-piece. The fish (haddock, since no cod made it to our table) was actually quite good; it was just hard to find inside the massive coating of batter. We were charged an extra dollar for the additional three ounces of tartar sauce that we requested. An order of cole slaw (the size of a loonie) was a soggy mess in a vinegar dressing. The taste of the onion rings was NOT improved by the addition of ale to the batter. The onions themselves were soggy, as if they had been pre-cooked before being tossed in the batter. I just had the Halibut and chips recently and could not believe how poor the quality was: really really small fish filet coated in a thick and tasteless batter. Yelp lists Pilot House as accessible. It is not. Waitress was surly and totally unhelpful. Waitress alleged that restaurant was accessible because the patio is. Of course the patio has been covered in snow and closed for months. One can only assume that the food and service are as poor as the restaurant's treatment of handicapped guests. read more
