Driving back from Montreal to Toronto, Kingston seemed like the perfect spot to stop for a late lunch. We scoped out a few places and landed here for a change from the typical pub vibe, Italian pasta joints around the corner, or chains like Jack Astor's. We beat the lunch crowd, arriving just before 2 PM. Service was great--we were seated immediately and ordered a few tapas: some roasted Brussels sprouts and a selection of meat options including Persian BBQ lamb, achiote grilled chicken, and sticky pork ribs. The chicken was my least favorite, though it wasn't bad. Everything else was absolutely delicious and flavorful. I'd really like to come back another time for proper drinks--they have an impressive wine list and a nice selection of sangrias that caught my eye. Located in Kingston, Ontario this is a tapas style restaurant. The interior is dark and cool making you think of a wine cellar. Full bar with extensive wine options. They have a private party room downstairs which is also where the restrooms are located so the restaurant isn't really accessible. They recommend 3-4 dishes per person. This can be expensive as most dishes are in the 20 dollar range. The steak with chimichurri sauce was excellent!!! But was also $44.00 for about 13 small slices. We also ordered a Thai green curry cod that comes with cashews infused in the sauce. We had a nut allergy at the table so they were able to remove the cashews to make the dish nut free. Service was decent but this is a dining environment where you are not rushed out the door. Dishes come out sporadically so you are meant for slow dining. I've been wanting to try this Kingston staple for a while and now that I am no longer a broke college student, I finally have - and it did not disappoint! My personal favourite dishes were the Foie Gras Pinxto, the Butternut Squash and the Scallops. My friend's favourite was the Persian Lamb Tacos, but honestly there were no misses with any of the dishes. The least exciting dish was the Patatas Bravas and even those were fried perfectly. I highly recommend ending with the Künefe for dessert, which was both unique and delicious. Don't be intimidated by 3 dollar signs! The food is 100% worth the extra splurge (because you will want to order everything on the menu). Plus, the atmosphere is relaxed and casual and our server was super friendly and helpful. My wife and I have only been infrequent visitors to Kingston, but when we're there, more often than not, we've stopped in to Tango Nuevo for dinner. It's a beautiful space, and their broad selection of shareable dishes has something for everyone. We started our most recent meal with the roasted butternut squash. The lightly sweet squash paired well with a brown butter and honey glaze, and some tangy chevre provided some salty contrast, while toasted walnuts brought the crunch. Patatas bravas are a staple tapas dish, and Tango Nuevo's have been consistently great - crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, with a bit of paprika for some flavour and the garlic aioli is addictively dippable! In typical tapas fashion the queso y chorizo was simple in its execution, but delicious nonetheless. The lightly spicy slices of sausage had a great flavour from the char of the grill, and when teamed up with the salty umami of the manchego cheese, it made for fantastic bites with the grilled baguette. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the Turkish ravioli aren't traditional tapas, but they were still top notch. Rich and savoury beef filled the toothsome pasta packages, while yogurt and a paprika butter rounded out the flavour profile quite nicely. My wife and I will be frequenting Kingston less now that we've moved back to the east coast, but if we ever return, we know where to look for tiptop tapas. read more

I went to visit Tango Nuevo for dinner while in Kingston for work upon recommendation from a friend. The place was very nice and spacious, with lots of seating. The place had a very nice ambiance and seems like a great date spot with an extensive cocktail menu and a lot of tapas choices. I was solo dining so ended up getting a couple things to try and a drink. Ordered the Tuna Poke Nachos which used crispy wonton wrappers as the chips and it was very well executed. I also tried the Achiote Grilled Chicken which was a delight especially the black garlic puree it was served with. For the cocktail, I tried the strawberry Balsamic Sour, which was quite nice. My husband and I went to Tango Nuevo on an overnight stop on the way to Montréal. We had read reviews online and thought it was worth checking out. We ordered the Hibiscus Paper Plane and the Campfire Manhattan to start. The drinks were both really delicious. The Manhattan was soooo smoky! We then had the foie gras pintxo. It was so delicious. What a revelation to shave the frozen foie gras! YUM!! Next, we had the scallops on a sunchoke purée with hazelnut pesto. The scallops were cooked to perfection. Sooo good! We also had the octopus pintxo which was just as delicious as the other 2 dishes. It was served atop fried bread and again, cooked to perfection. We also had the meatballs in a tomato sauce. We ordered this because we had read great reviews about it, but it was just ok. The sauce was pure yum but the meatballs themselves lacked seasoning. Our last dish was the Su pastry. The pastry was really flaky and light and the filing was delish. We would definitely go back and look forward to trying new dishes the next time we have a stopover in Kingston! read more

We stopped by here on our way back from the Thousand Islands and although I was a little apprehensive about the price, we decided to give Tango Nuevo a try. It ended up being so amazing. Our waitress was super nice and told us that the owner of Tango Nuevo is Turkish, and his sister works in the kitchen, so a lot of their food is Turkish Fusion. That makes sense, their Turkish Ravioli was absolutely delightful. The Foie Gras Pintxo had Foie Gras snow on it! I was mind blown, I'm not usually a big fan of having an entire seared Foie Gras to myself, but by creating shaved cool Foie Gras that literally melts in your mouth, I was sold. Other honorable mentions include: tuna poke nachos and grilled octopus pintxo. If you're into tapas (have no illusion about portion sizes) and fusion food (please don't give me the whole "it's not authentic" spiel) please give Tango Nuevo a try. This restaurant is centrally located in the heart of downtown Kingston, walking distance and only minutes away from City Hall, Historic Waterfront, Visitor Information Centre, and Martello Alley. It has a cool, modern, fun vibe with very friendly and attentive service. I really like the interior and background music. It has a classy yet modern atmosphere. The outside patio is also available when weather permits. The food is amazing. They serve mainly Spanish fusion tapas with modern global twists (including Japanese, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Italian, and French influences). The tapas that we tried: 1) Roasted Brussels Sprouts (with feta yogurt, almond dukkah, pomegranate jelly, brown butter, and white balsamic glaze) - The brussels sprouts are not overcooked which is great. Tastes pretty good. 2) Roasted Butternut Squash (with arugula, feta cheese, toasted walnuts & pumpkin seeds, brown butter honey, white balsamic gastrique) - Order this and you won't regret it!! 3) Vegetable Empanadas (with potato, roasted red pepper, and garlic aioli) - Unfortunately these are deep fried with mostly potato filling. They remind me of a cross between Indian samosas and Central American empanadas. 4) Patatas Bravas (crispy potatoes with smoked paprika and garlic aioli) - The potatoes are very crispy. It's interesting that they put the sauce on top in the shape of a sunnys-side up egg (I thought it was an egg on top at first, until I poked it and realized that it was sauce). 5) Mediterranean Eggplant (with basil, parsley, cayenne pepper, shallots, feta jalapeno yogurt, pomegranates, lemon zest, and crostini) - One of my favourite tapas of the night! I love eggplant in general, especially when it's cooked Middle Eastern-style. It's almost like babaghanouj (very soft consistency), good for eating with the crostini that it's served with. The pomegranates add a nice refreshing crunch. 6) Atlantic Scallops (pan-seared scallops with sweet pea purée) - Very tender, and the sweet pea purée is so delicious. 7) Grilled Octopus Pintxo (grilled octopus with balsamic marinated roasted tomatoes, crushed arugula and lemon, feta cheese, brown butter fried bread, and hot honey tomato oil) - The tender octopus and roasted tomatoes go really well with the bread. 8) Tuna Tataki (chilled, rare tuna with ponzu sauce and seasonal greens) - Better than any other tataki I've tried in Japanese restaurants. Over the past year, I've visited Tango several times--with my boyfriend, a friend, and a group of colleagues--and every single time, I order the Tuna Tartare. It's absolutely amazing! We had to sit on their patio which was fine. We happen to go on a night when it was cooler but they had heaters on so all was fine! Let me just start by saying that the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous inside. The decor is modern yet rustic and the whole place has a very "hip" vibe, which I loved! The service was great and friendly. The food is tapas style with the focus on presentation. They recommend 2-3 plates per person to make up a meal but I found even 3 were not enough as the portions were reeeeally small (I took off a star for this). Given the average price of 1 dish was about $20 it was a bit disappointing. The food was tasty, some dishes better than others. We especially enjoyed octopus bites and tuna nachos. I was visiting a friend in Kingston with some family, and while exploring the city, Tango Nuevo was one of the places that was highly recommended. Now I see why. Tango Nuevo is unique in that they serve their dishes as tapas -- think small dishes or appetizers but ELEVATED. That's what Tango Nuevo is. It was recommended that each person order 2 tapas, so we ended up sharing 8 different dishes. Each dish was rich in flavor and you could taste the quality of the ingredients. My personal favorites were the Foie Gras Pintxo (SO CREAMY AND MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH) and the Turkish Ravioli, which was bursting with spices. We tried: Vegetable Empanadas - Freshly fried, hot potato pillowey GOODNESS. Like who doesn't love deep fried potatoes? Literally nobody. Foie Gras Pintxo - The foie gras snow on top of the crispy bread is super interesting... cus of all that goose fatty, the foie gras snow actually kinda melts in your mouth! It's not super strong in the foie gras taste tho so, very palatable even to those who aren't too fond of it. Moroccan Meatballs - These ain't yo average ikea meatballs. These balls are upgraded sonnnn. These meatballs are sooo juicy and the tahini that you dip it in, more pleaseeeee. Fish Tacos - Yummy fish tacos, nothing too special. My family and I were actually walking to another restaurant when it started raining so we decided to dine at Tango Nuevo. It was a happy coincidence! The scallops were top notch, they were well cooked and juicy nicely paired with chorizo jam and sweet potato purée. The potato brava was crispy, the cheese phyllo pastry was light and airy. Overall, we were impressed with the food. Service was prompt and friendly too. Server shared with us the origins of the owners and their passion for food. One small critique is that I wish they had a baby changing station. It was difficult changing my baby on the countertop. Tango Nuevo is a tapas place that is heavily influenced by Turkish and Korean cuisine. We stopped in on a Thursday night and despite there being empty tables, the hostess quoted us an hour plus wait. Most of the tables were reserved so we know for next time. There was space at the bar which is first-come, first-serve so we opted to sit there instead. The first thing that came out for us was the Donghae Poutine. It was loosely based on poutine since the base of it was butternut squash. Some parts of the squash were crispy which added a nice textural element but some where a little soft which made it all kind of uniform. The cheese curds were pretty plentiful though and the mix of the donghae, kewpie mayo, and kimchi were really unique. The duck breast was pretty average. It was tough and the gochujang kind of overpowered it. While the Su Pastry was right up my alley and filled with the most delicious cheese, I didn't find it so different than what you could get as a frozen hor doerves at the grocery store. The bartender was super on point. At one point she noticed that we hadn't been eating for too long and she came around to our side to inquire if we ever did receive those brussel sprouts. We confirmed that we hadn't so she headed straight into the kitchen to have them get our last dish out to us ASAP. These were very good though and I would definitely order these again. We decided to finish out the meal strong with dessert. The Peanut Butter & Chocolate Tiramisu that came out was tiny! $8 for a portion that would only fill up a baby...seriously it came in what appeared to be a baby food jar. We were planning to share it and we did but it was only a few spoonfuls for each of us. It was really delicious though although my boyfriend did argue that it wasn't a tiramisu at all and I was inclined to agree. All in all it was a yummy meal though not very filling and probably one of the best and most unique dining experiences in Kingston...but the price was way too much for what you got all things considered. read more
