I am on holiday from Scotland for 3 weeks in Kingston and have decided to make this my base for watching FIFA World cup Football matches. (not Soccer, that word makes my ears bleed!). Lots of screens throughout the bar. The match day atmosphere is nice, I watched Canada v Bosnia, then came back for Scotland v Haiti. Staff allowed me to hang up my Scotland bunting underneath TV screen before kick off. I had a Canadian burger one day, and the fish and chips the next. Definitely going to watch many more games here. read more

Worst bar in Kingston. The bartenders are jerks and it takes forever to get served. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Traditional pub with a nice patio. Food was great! Service was a little slow because they were short staffed but very friendly and accomodating. Some burger did come out with mayo and pickles after asking for them to be removed while ordering; was taken care of and removed from our bill. Berry margarita was amazing. read more

Passed by this place countless times but never really went to pubs at all. Safe to say we'll be coming back soon. Came on a Sunday and was seated at the back patio, which was quite spacious and comfy (even though they were plastic chairs :)). Ordered the special on Sundays/Mondays of the Pint and Pound of Wings (14.99) which is insanely cheap since just the wings on the menu comes out to 12.99, which means a domestic pint is $2! Got honey garlic as the flavour and it was pretty decent overall, no complaints. In addition to the domestic pint, also had the steam whistle, moosehead lager, big rig, and molson throughout the night. Late at night, all beer is good beer so no complaints here either. The Toucan is THE classic pub in Kingston for me that takes me back to my days as a grad student at Queen's many years ago. My review is almost certainly clouded by nostalgia. The Toucan is a traditional Irish pub that flirts with dive status without going over the line. They've got a nice heated patio in the back. The beer list is standard - get a Guinness. I dropped in for lunch this week for a club sandwich. The menu, while limited, is prepared well. The chicken was not dry and the sandwich was tasty. The rare roast beef sandwich is another favourite. read more

Nero is fiddling.... The smell of the floor in that place might keep the bugs away...but its keeping patrons away too. If you are an Irish pub...try adjusting your pint prices as well. As much as they bitch about the rich in there..their ripping off their own patrons. read more

Throwback Thursdays are the best! We were in the elevator at our hotel and two couples told us to go to Toucan for throwback Thursday. So we did. They do have a limited menu of the throwback specials but you're sure to find something you like. There are apps, soups, salads, handhelds and some adult beverages. Husband enjoyed the Toucan burger which had nice charred exterior and was good size at 7 oz. I had veggie burger because it had avocado slices on it. Husband liked the fries better than I did because I like them crisper. The garden side salad was delicious - veggies tossed in housemade roasted shallot vinaigrette. I think they said the prices on the throwback menu were around 40% cheaper than regular. read more

The service was great, the waitress was so incredibly nice and she was very helpful. I'm a vegetarian and I didn't know what to get but the veggie burger here is amazing I loved it so much it was delicious. Definitely one of the best veggie burgers I've had, the Fries are yummy as well. The outdoor seating was nice and were in the heart of Kingston. In the back there is a walkway which is beautiful! This pub does serve Guinness and they pour it correctly. However, when I asked the server why my Guinness (at $7.00 per 20 oz) came in a regular beer glass, I was told that they only own 4 Guinness glasses in the pub. It just doesn't taste the same. What added to a less than stellar experience was the young lady who served my table. When I raised my concerns about the glass, she really did not appear to care one way or the other. When someone at the table next to mine raised concerns over something they were served, she actually walked away mid-way through what was being said to her.. and the customer was not at all being rude, on the contrary, he was apologizing for having something negative to share with her. So... get Guinness glasses, hire staff that are able to maintain a pleasant demeanour, and, based on the decor, perhaps knock the price of your Guinness (and other import draughts) down to a more reasonable $6.50. read more

What's not to love here? Probably the dim lighting, the funny smell of the floor and the overall shabbiness of the place, but really, all those little things make up the Toucan, and I love every little bit of it. Service isn't always perfect, but the staff are generally upbeat, chatty and enthusiastic. Food is great; I'm a huge fan of the all-day breakfast option and the chevre salad. Best of all, when your a grad student at Queen's it's 50% off food on Thursdays! If you haven't been in before, be prepared for the atmosphere, but then enjoy it, quirks and all! read more

Always a nice change from the debauchery that is the Hub. It wasn't until I walked in here one night stone cold sober in a quest for egg nog that I realized how divey it looks. The only other time I was there was last year for St. Pat's, which I was already thoroughly intoxicated for. But I digress. Bartenders have always been very nice to me, never have had any problems with them. However, when I went with friends last St Pat's we ran into some trouble with a server/bouncer character who was checking our IDs and had a bit of a political inquisition with my Turkish friend. Had this unfortunate event not happened, I would be give the Toucan 4 stars, but the guy was a real douche bag about it. read more

Pub-grub food. Mostly well executed but nothing terribly exciting or noteworthy. The prices are very cheap which is a major plus. You really need to go and capitalize on their various weekly specials. Beer selection covers the craft-brew and mainstream basics but is not immense, odds are good you'll find what you are looking for but won't find much you haven't already seen. Service has typically been very friendly, accommodating of big groups and lots of moving around. Lots of bands, both good and bad, play at the Toucan but it is really not an amazing place to experience live tunes. Often lively and boisterous, a great place if you are looking for that type of thing. read more

This was such a disappointment. There are only so many ways you can mess up pub food. I ordered the chef's salad and the mozzarella sticks. The salad was okay, but the mozza-sticks came cold and solid in the centre. My friend ordered the fish and chips, which were cold and under-cooked. I'm not sure if perhaps they sat for a while before being brought to the table, but it was really disappointing. The standard is not high for pub food, so there are definitely better places to go in Kingston. read more

We waited 25 minutes in the hot sun for a table on the back patio so we could watch the Euro cup. The patio had a tiny tv screen that nobody could see. Terrible place. Walked past this a few times on my way to the Holiday Inn and always wondered what it was. Finally went one Friday night at around 1am (also because nothing else was open). Atop the Toucan (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/the-toucan-kingston), one of the best clubs in Kingston, is perched one of the better restaurants in Kingston. As you'd expect from a place that shares its kitchen with the pub, you're going to get some very decent pub food. As well, you're also going to get some other treats that you wouldn't expect from a pub's kitchen. Not as dark as the Toucan, Kirkpatrick's is lit slightly brighter and is a great little restaurant. There are tons of little nooks that you can find to sit down on a wee stool or in a booth or at a table where you can enjoy the cuisine that Kirkpatrick's affords. Though the menu is somewhat broad, all the food comes out fresh and outside of the normal British pub fare. There are the usual staples that you would expect from either venue that is housed here, but that food that goes beyond the usual fish and chips. It is still as good as can be expected. It is warm, inviting, and a great place to start an evening that will carry on in the south part of Kingston. You may want to go to the Toucan for a pint afterwards. It's just as good. read more

After reading some of the reviews I started to wonder if they were reviewing the same place I have frequented. Yes it kinda looks like a dive but I think that the toucan doesn't cater to upper end people but to college-age kids looking for a good start for the evening and for 30-somethings looking for a very well poured pint. I work on the same block as the Toucan so I come here fairly often. The staff are amazing - always friendly, helpful and smiling! Great place to watch baseball (or any other sport) with friends (or alone!) and the mac and cheese is to die for. I'm not much of a beer drinker myself, but they have a wide selection to choose from if that's your cuppa. Dimly lit interior keeps you nice and cool in the heat as well. Live music happens fairly often and I recommend checking out the patio! read more

I'm fine with mediocre pub grub and shabby decor, but the two times I've been here I received some of the worst service I've had in my life. I'm not exactly a high maintenance customer; I just ask that you come to my table more than twice in like three hours and at least pretend to apologize for messing up my food order instead of just saying, "Oh. This place is the perfect watering hole (it really is a bit of a hole...) and I've had some of my best times in Kingston here: sloppy, slightly dangerous games of darts, celebrating when Crosby scored the winning goal in the gold medal Olympic game, swapping stories over a cold pint with strangers and close friends alike... there is something about the Toucan that breeds camaraderie, which isn't always the case in dive bars. The crowd is the sketchiest collection of chatty drunks you could hope for; there's an age range of around 19-65 with the occasional underage patron, and in the wee hours everyone gets a bit rowdy. The bartenders are all really friendly: last year, a high kick dance move (no, there's no dance floor, just good music and patrons that feel free to do as they feel) saw a shoe go flying over the bar, hitting a bartender. He just laughed. THAT's what I'm talking about. Come early to catch the game, real late to witness raucous behaviour, and for goodness sake, don't bother with the food unless you're tanked. read more

Worst service ever. Took 20 mins to take our order. Asked for sound to turned on as we were all their to watch soccer. Got a moody response- really?. Then returns to our table and takes the order again- no explanation. This is part of their first class service. Then made us wait a further 20 minutes. When we cancelled we were treated with indignation. Then drops a bill in front of us and is surprised when we complain. Makes a moody apology. Disgusting attitude. I'm one of several that is avoiding the place due to this aloof and disrespectful attitude. Shame on you for running such a poor service. Left hungry and went to a competition. Explanation was that we were watching the game and it therefore was not a big deal! Wow. read more
