I regret that this is my very first negative review. I was essentially accused of attempting to…read moredefraud the business by trying to return an item without a receipt, and when I asked questions about why the no-receipt policy was inflexible, I was given a lecture on how businesses and receipts work, then told I should feel embarrassed for challenging the policy in the first place.
First things first - yes, every business has every right to enforce whatever policies they want. Yes, I did not have a receipt with me, but only because I was not given one when I initially made my purchase from a person named Robert. Yes, in retrospect I should have asked for a receipt. So let me just own those shortcomings on my part before continuing.
On Thursday May 1st 2025 I bought 3 items from this store totaling $67.43, and was helped by a very nice and kind person named Robert who answered my questions and gave me a nice vet recommendation in the West end. I bought a litter box (this is the item I tried to return), an enzyme urine spray cleaner, and a bag of Swheat Scoop cat litter.
On May 2nd 2025 I returned in the afternoon to exchange the littler box for a number of other items I had forgotten to buy for my cat. The person at the counter had long white hair and asked me to present a receipt for which I did not have, and was told nothing could be done because, as I was then lectured, no business would ever accept an exchange without a receipt.
I challenged this policy by asking a series of questions such as: if you have security camera footage of me making the transaction (there is a camera facing customers) and if Robert remembers me from yesterday (we exchanged names as I thanked him for his help) and if there is a digital transaction record, then is there no room for an exception to this policy? From my perspective it is extremely clear that I am a legitimate customer, and I am absolutely not trying to defraud the business.
This is when I was accused of buying a $30-ish dollar litter box from another business, and trying to exchange it at Cascadia Natural Pet Supply. I was also told they "would never make an exception, even to [their] best customer. So why should I make an exception for you?" Perhaps, and bear with me now, your policy is terrible then?
Next, this person called me entitled, and that if they were me, they would feel embarrassed for asking in the first place. I was taken aback by this.
So now let's just break down why policies exist: to protect the business, right? So if there is a significant amount of evidence that a person like me is not trying to defraud or harm the business, then why should the policy be enforced? Why is the policy inflexible? Why can't an exception be made? Every single policy ever committed to paper was made up. Someone just decides what it is, and it is so. Can they also not decide otherwise?
I believe I was treated and spoken to in such a disrespectful and condescending manner because I challenged this persons authority, questioned the legitimacy of their policy enforcement, and simply asked questions to clearly understand why the answer was no.
Once again, to be fair, I fully understand every business has every right to enforce whatever policies they wish, for any reason, and that's totally fine. It's legal, legit, and so on. I was just trying to appeal to this persons humanity and was chastised for it. It bothers me that they tried to humiliate me then vindicate their own awful behavior by citing this policy, as if it's an excuse to be this way.
In the end, it's a $30-ish dollar litter box, and I will give it away to someone who can use it. I just wanted to literally give this business more money over time to buy stuff, but like, OK, whatever I guess. I've literally just moved home to Vancouver and am trying to buy supplies for my cat!
Anyway, it's just a little money, I truly don't care about that part, but I absolutely won't let go of how I was treated. So that's why this wall of text exists on the internet now.
I use a credit card that tracks every transaction, and I'm going to attach a screenshot here of the exact moment a text message record was sent to me by my bank for posterity. Just so you know I wasn't lying. Go ahead and check it against your own record, and remember to adjust for USD which was like 1.3847-ish on May 1st.
And if your security camera records audio too, I suggest you go back and watch this awful interaction, so you can verify that I spoke to you in a calm, polite, and simply inquisitive manner, which was reciprocated with what seemed like disgust and condescension.
To Robert who originally helped me out: you are cool, you were so kind, patient, and helpful. Sorry, man.
