Stumbled across this restaurant on a trip to St Louis, and we're glad we stopped. The first thing…read moreto catch the eye is a long glass-front counter full of delightful-looking desserts. The restaurant is obviously a local favorite spot as many other patrons were greeted by name by staff or other diners. We seated ourselves in a booth, of which circles the rest of the room with several tables down the middle. Service was quick, sweet tea for me, not often found in Illinois dining, but perfectly done for this southern girl. Hubby was just as happy with his unsweet tea. The homemade vegetable soup was warm, thick with vegetables, even some cabbage, midst the creamy broth. My hand-presses cheeseburger was as delectable as any, and would have been perfect if tomatoes were in season and carried more flavor. But the lettuce was crisp, the onion sharp, and the pickles crunchy. Hubby has a tossed salad and the catfish dinner. The fish was cooked in cornmeal, a real "down home" dish, plenty of it and plenty of flavor. Hush puppies were delicious, but not enough of them. Then, we both ordered dessert even though we knew we couldn't finish them: strawberry cake and a lemon crème pie. Out of this world! The price was reasonable for the excellent food and service, even in these days of austerity. We definitely intend to return to The Grille!

We both had omelettes and they were terrific. I had a Veggie omelette with cheddar cheese. My hubby had a sausage and cheese omelette with jalapenos. I asked for crispy hash browns and they were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside which was perfect! They serve real butter packets with their pancakes too, not the whipped spread fake stuff! It was busy but the servers were attentive for coffee refills.

While we were eating at The Foundry, we happened to be sitting right next to Press Waffle Co., and…read moreafter watching all their different waffle options go by on the rotating menu, I couldn't resist trying one for dessert. I kept it simple and ordered a plain Liège waffle, and I'm really glad I did. It was served warm, right off the griddle, with a perfectly crispy exterior while still having that dense, chewy texture you get from the brioche-style dough. The Belgian pearl sugar caramelized throughout the waffle, adding little clusters of sweetness and an extra bit of crunch with each bite. It was perfectly sweet all on its own and honestly didn't need any toppings or extras. They had plenty of delicious-looking specialty options if you're looking for something more indulgent, but I loved being able to really taste the waffle itself. It was the perfect little dessert after enjoying our food from Four Hens Creole Kitchen and Steve's Meltdown. Sometimes simple is all you need, and I would definitely order the plain Liège waffle again.

The menu looked and sounded delicious. I was excited and I ended up ordering the Chicken and waffles. I forgot the name of the waffle my husband got but it was the one with Strawberries, whipped cream & Nutella. The latte I ordered was supposed to have a toffee flavor but they were out of it. I opted to add the salted caramel instead. I really wanted to like it. Because who spends $40+ on food you don't want to like? However, that was not the case. I ended up eating the chicken and not the waffle. The flavor was weird. I couldn't get past the aftertaste. My husband ate most of his. He didn't really care for his waffle either. The strawberries & whipped cream were delicious. Our lattes arrived and I was excited, then upon tasting it I gagged. I have no idea what caused that. It just wasn't good. The ladies working the counter were super nice and the service was good. The Foundry that early in the morning is actually kind of peaceful. I probably won't be back though.
