We had a pizza for app and 4 pasta dish's. I had 2 glasses of wine. Cost 277 with tip. The pasta dish's were all tasty. The pizza was a big hit. I put the cost in there because it was way to expensive for the quality and quantity of the food. Even with the ever present inflation excuse. Was busy on a Friday. And everybody was smiling. I am an individual diner NOT the competition bad-mouthing its competition. Overall VERY disappointing. We had wonderful weather, a great outside table, and great companionship with good friends. We had reasonably attentive service (except for a laughably clueless "waterboy" - a first summer job so I should not be too harsh except that the management could have at least trained this poor boy). So, let's talk about the food. At first I thought I was the victim of a prank to see whether I would notice or complain. How any respectable Italian restaurant, especially one in upscale Winnetka, can serve such uninspired, tasteless, and criminally small portion food like this is simply beyond my understanding. it was literally terrible. Our dining companion used the term "gross." Every restaurant has it's bad nights but this was ridiculous and inexcusable. The Chicken Limone was tasteless, rubbery AND cold. Literally, chicken McNuggets with a splash of lemon juice would have been far superior. And serving this with mashed potatoes has to be some sort of Italian culinary crime. Pappardelle Bolognese was literally a half a cup of tasteless noodles with a splash of nothing more than tomato juice with a few nuggets of beef - hardly the robust ragu that bolognese is supposed to be. I should have called over the obviously charming and gregarious manager/owner and complained but I just could not imagine where to start and why ruin a bad meal with an ugly encounter. But really, he should be ashamed of himself. Dinner for four with only one glass of wine and one gelato desert came to $200 with tip. Shameful, inexcusable and unfortunate. read more

I would traditionally give this five stars but due to recent rapid expansion it is clear that Bruno is compromising the integrity and quality of the original smaller quaint restaurant. I truly love this place and I understand the desire to expand and accommodate the demand however he has not been able to deliver the standard and consistency that originally drew this drew me to this Formerly amazing establishment. His prices have also dramatically increased with the expansion and given the deterioration I do not believe it offers the value that it once had. All pasta sauces premade w protein. So COULdn't add protein to the one non cream sauce pasta. We went for a special birthday dinner w 5 adults abd everyone left unsatisfied and in disbelief of the few choices and unhealthful choices. We like to eat healthfully and all meals served w potatoes and green beans. No vegetables like cauliflower, brocolli or Brussels to substitute for potatoes and beans. Yes , no veggies. When we called after the meal to discuss with chef/ owner , never got a return call. Expensive and definately not worth it. It is a pretty space but that is it. Good drinks and pasta is yummy if you eat cream sauce and sausage. Food was good, but our experience was ruined by how unabashedly rude they were in ushering us out the door. Despite the fact that we had a group of four and ordered a generous multi-course meal with lots of drinks, both owner and staff were very aggressive towards us, pointedly hovering, rolling eyes, bringing the check before we were even close to being done, and finally a loud comment from the obnoxious owner to our server right in front of us about how he needed the table. Last night was my first visit to Tocco with a party of five to celebrate two birthdays, and overall was a very good experience. The space does not at all resemble the old space (Jerry's kitchen and a few others over the years) and has been done over into an ulta-modern, shiny, mostly white dining room with some interesting art, and a separate section for the hostess stand, bar, and restrooms. Unlike the old space, the kitchen is not visible and the eating area isn't divided into three separate spaces. These are all improvements. The menu is a respectable size without trying to do too much. The wine and cocktail list is small but everyone in our party found something they liked. I had the sbagliato, which was prosecco, Campari, and sweet vermouth. It was a bit heavy on the Campari for my tastes, but that's on me. After that I had an excellent glass of Pinot Grigio. There were four specials last night: one mozzarella appetizer, two pastas (one with shrimp, one with clams), and a porcini risotto. We started with two appetizers--fried calamari, and a prosciutto plate served with beets, peppers, salami, and cheese. The calamari was outstanding, melt in your mouth tender with an excellent batter, cooked perfectly. The prosciutto plate was also good, but not above average. I ordered the Pollo al Limone and was very happy with it. The chicken was delicious and served with equally tasty puréed potatoes and spinach sautéed in a high quality olive oil. Unlike the pasta dishes which are surprisingly small portions considering how inexpensive it is to make pasta and the price point of those dishes, I thought the chicken dish was an ample serving. I certainly didn't go home hungry. Everyone else had either pasta or risotto and everyone enjoyed their meals. For dessert we had tiramIsu and panna cotta. The plates came beautifully decorated for our birthdays and the flavors were very good. Dessert portions were fairly average. Tocco is LOUD. Tocco is so loud, we could barely hear each other or our server, and he had a hard time hearing us when we placed our orders. He misheard one order which resulted in a person in our party getting the wrong meal. He did quickly move to replace it, but she decided she liked it and kept it. The tables at Tocco are very close together. They're so close together the servers could not get behind each person to set down their meal, so they had to reach across the table or in front of someone else. Busboys could not refill waterglasses for the back side of our table unless we passed them across the table. Prices are high for the pasta dishes but average for the other entrees. I will go back, but I'll try a weeknight to see if it's less chaotic. read more

Amazing food and fantastic atmosphere! We started with the Calamari fritti that are to die for: simply perfect and not greasy. As my entree I got the pasta special that was a tomatoes sauce with basil, ricotta and almonds: truly delicious! My husband got the tortelli al tartufo: simply perfect! If you want to have authentic Italian experience stop here! Maybe you have to wait a little (the place was packed), but Bruno the owner came around with some salami and focaccia. The food was delicious. The experience was dismal. It was my mom's 91st birthday. We arrived at 5 pm and saw the gorgeous dining room. (All empty tables) Then we were informed that we were eating in a tent. I told them of our special occasion and the hostess said it would be very lovely in the tent. It was a nicely decorated, but it was cold, music was a Bluetooth speaker and we waited 1:30 for our meal. They said they squeezed us in, but please don't. If you can not properly serve diners, decline the reservation. We would have found a better spot. It's sad because Mom doesn't get out much and was so excited. She was an amazingly good sport, but really wanted her 91st to be as lovely as she is. We'll have a do-over elsewhere. read more

I enjoyed the food and I thought it was a nice place, but i won't be rushing to return and the other friends in my party who are all Italians by the way said they'll never return. My first point is that it is extremely overpriced for what it is. I guess they can get away with it in Winetka. A final bill of $225 including wine. That's steep for some pasta dishes. I thought the parpadalle had a great flavor, but all my italians said the pasta was too cooked. The wine that was served had moldy smell and taste. The server was completely clueless about this situation. It was Bruno who took one wiff and immediately requested the server change the 2nd bottle too. I was in disbelief that you ask for some oil and they give you an ounce with an espresso spoon. That's a staple in Italian culture I don't understand if you're spending the money on dinner why do they skimp on such things. Bruno was definitely an accommodating host and a real character. All in all it was a good dinner but they should try to work on some things that would improve the experience. read more

Our disappointment was that during our dinner with two other couples last night, my wife and I were served dinner a full 10 minutes after the other couples in our party were served. Not handled well at all. Bruno did come to the table to check on us ... but a gesture of good will would have been more than appropriate by him. Very friendly waitress. Everyone else did not seem happy to be there. In there for a light snack. Waitress offered to divy up skirt steak, beet salad and lemon pasta (italian names on menu). When they brought it out incorrectly we politely reminded the gentleman of out conv w waitress. Look of annoyance on his face. Went back in to use the BR 3 min after leaving. Took a wrong turn and was headed in to the hallway that leads to the kitchen. Some salt and peper bearded snapperhead got in my face in the snootiest way. Bartender than rudely reminded me where the bathroom was in the other direction. The food was decent. With the exception of the waitress the rest of the staff made it a slightly negative experience. If I treated patients that way in my medical practice I wouldn't be doing as well as I am. Generally when most people at a business treat a customer that way it's just poor leadership. read more

This is a weird and strained review. Takeout is very solid most of the time, worthy of 4 sometimes a 3.5. It's good, would order again. The food itself is good, again mostly quality. But my rub is the atmosphere- we ate outside twice, one a wait staff member loudly and verbally quit and walked off.. the other time was solid. But each time the owner is creepy. I find him slimy, weird, and always handsy with the young staff. Also his behavior is off putting. We went months ago during music fest- we had a ressie but waited 40 extra minutes to seat. When we finally did , after he got into an argument with someone at the bar very publicly, he said "take care of these people who had to wait!" But then we were greeted with a glass of wine on the tab we didn't want. The argument, the odd vibes at times- it's just not fun to go to for us. Long story short, it's hit or miss. We were really excited to try this place after hearing wonderful things about it. The two stars are for the food -- it was good but nothing special. I had the gnocchi, have had better in other local restaurants. The pasta is fresh, portion sizes are on the smaller (more European) side. Service? Horrible. We arrived early with a reservation and were scurried off by the owner to the bar. Waited over twenty minutes for a table and once sat it took the server another 10 minutes to get to the table to take a drink order. We only saw her once after that -- when she took our order (another server dropped the check.) We skipped appetizers and ended up waiting another 40 minutes just for two simple pasta dishes. No one came to the table the entire dinner to ask if we would like more drinks or how the meals were. Zero for service and hospitality. COVID isn't an excuse for poor, negligent service. We dined at Tocco tonight. This is the only restaurant that posts a sign at the front door stating, "You only have your table for one hour and 30 minutes" ! ! ! Yes, We were rushed. My expensive pasta was served cold. Our server was grilled by the owner Bruno for bringing a dish back to the kitchen. Our friends were highly disappointed we went to over crowded Tocco. Really lovely spaces to eat, indoors and out. Unfortunately, service and food are extremely subpar. They cut corners and overcharge for everything. They also don't care about food allergies but my favorite part of our incredibly inflated bill was the $3 "service fee" - when my husband called later to understand what it actually covered, the owner/manager was extremely defensive and ambiguous about it. He couldn't actually say what it was for, just that his costs are going up. Um, ok, your overinflated prices aren't doing the job? Seriously, a tiny appetizer here is $28. But you still have to nickel it and dime people with a $3 charge for nothing? We spent over $200 for an appetizer, two entrees, an espresso and two drinks each. They even charge for three pieces of bread! I don't like restaurants that nickel and dime, especially when the food iand service aren't great. There are much more authentic and honest Italian restaurants in Chicago. We won't be back. read more

Rarely do you have a perfect 4-course meal. Tonight at Tocco was such an evening. From drinks to appetizers to main to dessert - it was magnificent. Service from Jelena was kind and thoughtful. Our group ordered the zucchini soup and margherita pizza to start. Both delicious! The pizza's flavor and crust were on point. Main courses were butternut squash tortellaci, gnocchi Bolognese and veal stew with fresh pasta (a special). All served hot and our plates were completely cleaned. Hope they put the veal dish on the menu permanently. Desserts and coffee to finish - ricotta cheesecake, apple pie and panna cotta. Executed flawlessly. There are places to eat and places to dine - Tocco is the latter. read more

Worst dining experience in my life. Our 9-year-old grandson summed it up well: "I'm traumatized! You can't tell hungry children their food is coming when it's not!" We waited an hour and a half for mediocre pasta. After 45 minutes, lies and excuses started; it was always "they're being plated, one more minute." Finally, I left cash for our drinks and went for the car. Then our grand-daughter telephoned. "Our food is here!" By the time I got back there, my pasta was lukewarm, and the kids had just about finished. When the check finally came, not a cent was comped, nor did the manager ever come to apologize.
