Had dinner here late one night in June 2014. The service was extremely poor. Probably the worst Basque Food I have ever had. Not sure that it was really Basque Food, I think school cafeteria or prison food masquerading as Basque Food. This is great home-style cooking, and no trip to Elko is complete with out a meal or two here, and there's never been a bad meal here. The service has always been fast, even when the place is full. The steaks are huge but the lamb keeps us returning--tender, perfectly seasoned, moist. Adding the sauted garlic to the lamb takes it to another level. The Basque-style "ana" potato triumphs over the factory-made au gratin potatoes served elsewhere. Fresh bread and a beef vegetable soup with amazingly light meatballs started the most recent feast. Salad with homemade dressing followed. The entrees arrive with perfectly cooked green beans, rice with a few mixed vegetables, hearty spaghetti, and potato. The only choice besides entree was the style of potato. Bring an appetite! The senior-priced entrees come with one or two fewer sides and a smaller portion of the entree; you'll still have plenty to eat. If you're looking for a gourmet experience, adjust your expectations or eat elsewhere so that the rest of us can get a table and enjoy Toki Ona again and again. read more

Good food! The staff was very nice and attentive - I had the 2 lamb chop dinner, and despite the meat being a little overly fatty it had an amazing flavor - comes with a LOT of sides. The ana potatoes were good, but I didn't have enough room to try the rest. Service was good but quick. I ordered the French dip with Swiss cheese and it was pretty good. The meat was prime rib cooked Perfectly on a hogie roll for $10.95! Came with fries & soup or salad. This place is much like a diner. We choose this place because the parking lot was full at 1:15 pm. Who can go wrong if all the locals eat there? I ordered the steak sandwich medium rare. Not only was it delicious but it was cooked to perfection. I spoke with the own who gets his beef fresh three times a week or so. He said when he runs out he's out. The beef is never frozen and always fresh. I recommend this place and will eat here again. read more

I love this place. One of my favorites is liver and onions and the "ANNA" potato. The have a great senior menu and specials posted inside the vestibule as you enter the door. Liver and Onions might not be a favorite for everyone but as a traveler, it's not something you often see on a menu. I've been in Elko on business the last 3 months with another month to go. took my family here and it was a very friendly enviroment. clean and speedy service I tried the stuffed raviolis. My family (including a very picky child) were traveling through and decided to eat in Elko. We picked this place and were so glad we did. Even the picky eater enjoyed it. Lots of food (family style). The pasta and green beans were so so but we enjoyed everything else, including the chicken marsala. The soup had so much flavor! Wife and I went here for dinner tonight. Almost didn't go here because of the negative reviews. I'm glad we did go. Wife had the senior Toki Ona sandwich which is a grilled chicken breast with ham and Swiss on grilled sourdough bread. She enjoyed it. I tasted it, it was good. I had the senior New York steak which was about 14 ozs of perfectly grilled deliciousness. We both wanted their Ana potatoes which are a cheesy au gratin potato but they ran out before our entrees were ready so we had baked. Sides are served family style. Our meal came with soup (chicken), salad with house dressing, and bread. We had a serving of their bread pudding for dessert. A soup bowl worth, and warm. Our server Victoria was busy but took reasonable care of us. The only complaint I have about the place is it is LOUD. Very difficult to have a conversation, even just across the table. Definitely could use some sound absorbing materials on the walls and/or ceiling. Perhaps a tad pricey, the meal plus dessert, one beverage and one glass of wine was $48. read more

Excellent road food, much better option than any fast food dreck. I had the baked lamb and my partner had the pork chops. The chops were tender and moist, large - too big, really. We saved them for breakfast and ate the lamb for dinner. It was perfection - fell off the bone in rich, marvelous morsels. The meal started with a delicious orzo chicken soup which was place in front of us with no fanfare. Followed by a simple shredded lettuce salad, but with a spicy dressing that they sell in the restaurant. Delicious. Sides included some winners - the rice, some so-so - the spaghetti, and some I didn't touch - the canned green beans. Hey, it can't all be perfect. We enjoyed the local staff, the less than perfect service is what you would expect from a small town in the middle of northern Nevada. I mean, really? Some of these reviews are clearly written by people who don't know how to adjust expectations to suit the environment. For me, a traveler who can find a gem everywhere I go, I would say this place stands out for its local charm, delicious food served in a casual and inviting atmosphere, and for its convenience. We had great hopes for this Basque restaurant. Starting off, the chorizo and bean soup they provide when you sit down was exceptionally tasty. So far, so good. I ordered a baked half chicken, and my spouse, the Lomo (cured pork tenderloin). Both were delivered quite quickly, along with a realm of sides. But everything was nearly tasteless! My chicken had no flavor, like it was cooked without seasoning, and so did the lomo. Even the sides were bland and tasteless. We ate very little and threw the rest away. Very disappointing, especially when you consider the prices charged here. Decor for a restaurant with these prices was very coffee-shop as well. I have since found out The Star downtown is supposed to be much better for Basque. read more

I was visiting Elko for the day and have eaten Basque in Reno many times. Star Hotel was closed because it was Sunday so Toki Ona seemed next best. Ambience was blah...very basic coffee shop feel.. Service was not great..I had to remind waitress to bring our wine...and think she was maybe too young to serve alcohol. Soup was basic noodle with a little chicken, sides were canned green beans, rice with some frozen vegetables, baked pototo, iceberg lettuce with garlic mayo, and some Chef Boyardee tasting spaghetti.....blahhh.. Best side was the Ana Potato..kind of scalloped with a little spicy sauce. Entree of Filet Mignon and shrimp was good, and orange roughy was little dried out. Dessert of flan was horrible (and to be fair they deducted from bill)...but bread pudding was tasty. Overall was way overpriced for coffee shop.... We maybe are spoiled by Louis Basque and Santa Fe in Reno, but this did not even come close. Our total bill was over $77 for 1/2 liter of house wine, two entrees and one dessert before tip. Wayyyy overpriced......Same thing in Reno would have been about $50. Hate to do bad review without giving second chance, but this was so totally disappointing, and I really do not have any intention of trying it again:( read more

Wow...I'm really surprised at the ratings for Toki Ona. It seems from the revies that the Meats/main courses are the most remarkable items on the menu...everything else is, well, not great. Memorial Day weekend was our 2nd attempt at this restraunt. The first time we had breakfast which was unremarkable at best. We both had Chicken Fried Steak and it was overcooked and overspiced. We adore garlic and use it in everything but the amount of garlic in the Chicken Fried Steak rendered it nearly inedible. Fast forward the the "2nd Chance" on Memorial Day weekend. We were happy to see that the restaurant looked busy (usually a good sign) and went in. The service was good and food arrived quickly. I ordered the Baked Lamb and hubby ordered the Shrimp Combo plate. The soup was canned...looked and tasted exactly like Campbells Chicken and Stars. The salad was plain iceberg with a tasty creamy garlic dressing. The fries were greasy and not fully cooked, the green beans were straight from a can without seasoning, the rice was a gooey gruel and I don't know what the mess they called Spaghetti was but it tasted canned as well. If I were rating a meal on sides alone, I would give this one 1/2 star. However in spite of hubby's very generic shrimp, the Baked Lamb was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten and I would rate it a 4+. Hubby doesn't like lamb and he said it was delicious! I think the menu said they only serve the Baked Lamb on Thurs, Fri & Sat, but was well worth the try. The moral of the story is if family style and lots of food are impressive this place may be for you....if quality and freshly prepared food is what you crave, don't bother. read more

We go through Elko about every two years on our way to Buffalo and always go to the Star Hotel. Unfortunately/Fortunately the Star is closed on Sundays so I checked out my favorite website,,,Yelp! What a treat! Yes the place is dated but that doesn't affect the food. Because you don't see liver and onions on most menus....and it's a favorite of mine that is what I ordered. First off the soup ...chicken w/pastini, iceberg lettuce with maybe a tad too much creamy garlic dressing, basket of incredible bread & real butter. I was served two huge perfectly cooked liver/bacon w/gravy....and this was off the low priced senior menu. My husband was served ...what he said was the best fillet that he' s ever had...and he's 85...so what does that tell you! Sure the green beans were probably out of a can...but they tasted just like they did when I was a kid....rice maybe a little mushy but stil tasted good.....but the winner was the potatoes Ana. They were terrific. Needless to say we boxed up half our dinners for the next day....we're rv'ers. Besides the food being sooo good, our server.....a very attractive blonde lady...was fun to talk with plus her service was outstanding!!!! Had a dinner of grilled Idaho trout which was delicious. Hot chicken wings appetizers were great. The accompanying sides were so-so.

We shared the filet mignon and it was delicious. It was also more than enough food for two. They start you off w a delicious pasta soup and soft bread. Then a salad which is just iceberg but the dressing was good. With our steak which was tender and juicy we got fries, a wonderful scallop potato, green beans, spaghetti, and rice. It's a fun family style meal. The atmosphere is good with an updated interior. read more

Had dinner at Toki Ona's last night, still memorable. Like most restaurants here in Elko its a blast from the 50's for decor. The service was good and soup was on the table in a minute. it was a bland chicken and mini pasta ball soup but with a little pepper and hot sauce it was comforting. The salad was just ice burg but the dressing was out of this world, creamy and garlicky. I ordered the lamb chops that were cooked to a perfect medium rare. It is served with a handful of garlic and a small plastic cup of mint jelly, ditch the jelly not needed it was great with just the garlic. The sides are so so , green beans from the can and probably the spaghetti, surprisingly the rice (cooked to a mush) was quite tasty. So All and all it was a good meal and I recommend the Toki Ona! read more

Went here on 10/24/12 with a friend for dinner. We here for breakfast on our way through in May and decided to give them a try for dinner. MISTAKE, HUGE MISTAKE!!! I had a grilled (grilled but swimming in oil??) chicken breast, yuck. The best part of the whole meal was the initial bean soup and french bread. My friend had pork chops which looked good at the outset, but were tough and tasteless. Bland rice goo with some sort of veggies mixed in, spaghetti (I've had better Spaghettios), canned green beans and then there is the "Ana Potato". This was a gooey, oily, cheap cheese mess with no flavor. Oh, I must digest, my friend had french fries as his potato and they were actually good, but not $25.00 for an entree' good. The staff seemed more interested in discussing their lives, hunting trips and broken down cars, than providing service to customers. Also if the smell of the fish from the table behind us was any indication of that entree', don't eat that either. Soooo, the chef (??!!) sang while murdering the food. He certainly sings better than he cooks and he could not carry a tune in a new bucket. Shortened version, do not, repeat DO NOT eat here. read more

Since it was after 9:00pm, we were in the mood for a small bite and a beer. When the bill came it was Over $32.00!!! For two orders of wings at $6.00 each and a beer for my husband and myself. REALLY? They assumed we were going to order a full dinner, when I refused to pay for the soup $10.00! REALLY? ..they took it off the bill and replaced it for $7.00 for 4 small pieces of bread?? What? Robert Irvine would lose his mind here. The only reason this place gets a two is that the staff seemed incredibly friendly. I ordered the "grilled chicken"...the only thing grilled about it was that it may have been cooked on a pan that was on the grill, but the chicken had been pan fried in butter. It was actually very good chicken, but not what was on the menu. The bread was also fresh, but sadly the best part of the meal. I agree that it's incredibly overpriced for the meal. The items that come with the meal are gimmicky to make it look like you're getting more for your dollor, but the green beans were definitely canned, the pasta sauce was without flavor on overcooked spaghetti, and a salad made up of iceberg lettuce. Don't let the initial homey dinerish vibe fool you this place has an awesome chef and friendly great staff. The service was prompt, the food more then worth the price, my one bit of advice is save room. Your meal comes with family style soup, salad, bread and sides. Toki ona is a great local place to stop if you're really hungry and not too concerned about counting calories. We've stopped there twice for lunch on road trips and the experience has always been good. The salad is what kept us coming back-it's iceberg lettuce with a traditional garlic and egg basque dressing. There is a lot of dressing but we were craving it for the entire year after we went the first time! The lunch menu has a ton of sandwiches and although most of the stuff they have listed is pretty traditional diner fare, there's enough variation to stand out from the crowd. The fries alone are worth stopping for, shoestring and flavorful (I like mine covered in mild green tobasco sauce.) the white gravy on the mashed potatoes has a unique and delicious flavor, and the sandwiches, though most are fried and stuffed to the brim, are pretty great too. The decor is outdated, but its apparent the clientele is made up of regulars who've probably been coming to this place for years and not seen the need for a change. This certainly isn't fancy dining, and if you come here expecting Applebee's or Boston Pizza food, you'll be disappointed. Toki Ona is a unique Elko tradition, and if you want to experience the state of Nevada, it's in your best interest to stop here. read more

under new ownership as of may 2009. they are open from 6 am to 9:30 pm for breakfast you get gererous servings and for lunch I recommend the steak sandwich dinner also has a great menu. The steak and lobster are to die for. they also have a bar if you want a couple of drinks. read more
