The hibachi food had so much butter and soysauce it was inedible. The steak quality was like the lowest grade beef ever,it was tough and gamey. Wow! Awesome fresh food! We opted for a table in lieu of the grill. I had teriyaki chicken with fried rice. The portions are big and the food fresh and very tasty. I ordered hot tea and was disappointed I got a tea bag? I was hoping for the pot of hot tea. Our waitress was very nice although she did not understand English very well. We asked for the ginger sauce and the cream sauce you normally get at a hibachi grill and she had no knowledge as to what we wanted. We eventually got another server who assisted. Came here with out of town friends. We moved to sit in front. The guy was very rude so moved back to the side so I could watch the cooks backside. We were told could not sit in the front in case a party of 12 came in. Sat for awhile alone at the table with nothing then a couple was seated in the front and given soup. We just got up and left. Tokyo is such a delightful surprise here in Carlsbad! I travel to the area for work every couple of months and so I was excited to discover Tokyo! Since it's just me, I have a seat at their granite-topped bar where I can enjoy a drink and watch the sushi get made. My first trip here and the sushi chef treated me to a small seaweed salad. There was a lot going on with that small salad and the flavor was spot on! Next I ordered the yellow tail sushi and the Vegas roll. The two pieces of yellow tail were so fresh and definitely high quality sushi. The Vegas roll is spicy tuna with cream cheese and a jalapeño slice on top. Perfection! The right amount of kick without being too hot! I will definitely be here the next time I'm in town!! read more

I cannot find better Japanese food, at least not in Carlsbad. Tokyo is pretty good and the serving sizes are plenty! We also have had some really good sushi here including the Spicy Crab Roll and Vegas Roll! The side fried rice or side of noodles are actually really good too for something simple! read more

We went to celebrate a birthday while in town visiting family. This is setup is strange, we sat in a booth rather than the hibachi tables. Our view was of the 5 bussing carts and the setup station. (See photo) The food was average, two orders of teriyaki chicken, one teriyaki steak and one hibachi steak. Both of the steak dishes were dry. Tempura veggie appetizer was greasy. Went here on a Friday night, it was packed. Several people were on a list waiting for a booth or table. However, we went there for sushi. I walked straight to the sushi bar, it was empty so no wait time. Their sushi is absolutely delicious, I had a hard time figuring out why the sushi bar wasn't packed. I'm a fan of their Seaweed Salads. Love the Seaweed salad and I will make a special trip now and then to get one. I can't remember their other food.. it must be good but it is no memorable. The restaurant is kind of dark and I find that a little spooky like. They seriously need a new décor, a new decorator. It is not a very pleasant atmosphere.. just dark and dingy. And their floor is really weird. It is slippery, all of the time. I have never seen anyone fall down on it but it is a really strange floor. I was pretty unimpressed with this place. The meso soup had a weird fish taste to it. The shrimp fried rice had a odd taste that I couldn't place but it wasn't good. And the sushi was some of the worst I've ever had. Now onto the service, it was almost nonexistent. I managed to get one beer with my whole meal and the place is very spendy for how bad the food is. We were staying in White's City and decided to come to Carlsbad for dinner. Every single place we checked the hours said it closes at 10:00pm, including their own website. No signage for hours on the restaurant, walked in at 9:00pm and stood there for 10 minutes before someone came in that worked there and informed us that "they think they're closed". I love this place! Considering I've been to so many sushi restaurants in my life, this is one of my favorite! I had the best Miso Soup in US, because it's really authentic! I love the Sushi too, it tastes as great as how it looks! The best part is Hibachi. It was such a show to see how the cook made it with a big fire and his dazzling technique. And the price is surprisingly reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place to my friend and come back next time I come to Carlsbad. read more

Food is great and the hibachi grills are exciting but, unfortunately, I always seem to have issues when it comes to ordering my meals. In their meal descriptions for dinners it says it comes with a soup and salad but you don't get the soup and salad unless you ask them for it. To me that comes across as deceiving and I find that very irritating. Especially, when I order my meal to go and the soup and salad that I thought was included with the meal is missing and I didn't see that until after I got home. Or the salad dressing is missing to the salad I ordered. I have had multiple issues with them forgetting to give me certain items that are included with my meal that I pay for. It makes me very disappointed as a customer and as a Carlsbad resident because you can't get good Asian food like this anywhere else so I feel trapped. read more

Another table sat after myself yet their waiter took the order properly so they were able to get their drinks, soup, and food first. 57 minutes wait before the cook could start cooking and not his fault since waiter took the order after 41 minutes of waiting. Lesson learned: Stick to BBQ in Carlsbad. We saw the meh reviews but needed a sushi fix. You'll see when you look at the menu 5hat this is a place where cowboys and oil workers come to acclimate to the concept of sushi--not to actually eat good sushi (most were on the hibachi side anyway). My sushi roll had boiled crawdads in it, so you get the idea, right? More fried food and creamy sauces than raw fish on the menu. Portions are big, but the rolls are loosely rolled, mediocre in taste, and generally poorly executed with too much sauce. But still passable if you MUST have sushi. Spicy tuna hand roll was huge but falling apart on arrival. Presentation is not their forte. Miso soup was unpleasantly fishy. Service curt, robotic, with no sense of timing. Language barrier made communication difficult as well. read more

Japanese dining in New Mexico? Bad choice. Worst dinner ever. This restaurant was a bad experience from start to finish. Our waitress was rude and always in a rush to leave our table. She didn't check on us once or clear plates until prompted to. And in a surprise bonus magic show, the waitress seemingly disappeared for around 20 minutes in the middle of our dinner. I have to say that this is honestly the strangest dining experience I've ever had. We ordered vegetable tempura and salads as appetizers only to be informed that the restaurant was out of salad (?). We tried to order miso soup after, but our waitress told us that they were out of miso soup as well (??) so we cancelled the order, only to have the waitress bring out our order of miso soup ten minutes later. The vegetable tempura was probably the worst I've ever had - the batter they used was flavorless and the dipping sauce just tasted like salt. The sashimi that my family ordered was sliced extremely thin and the pieces were different sizes (isn't cutting fish the most basic requirement for making sushi?) and we were one piece short on one of the dishes. Not only that, all of our food came at the strangest possible time - our rolls and sashimi were brought out ahead of the appetizer. The soba dish that a family member ordered came 20 minutes after, when we had finished eating all of the food they'd brought out before. They forgot about one of the rolls we ordered. Very very subpar. If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. The food and service here is terrible. read more

Most definitely the worst experience ever at this restaurant we dont have many to choose from so it's hard to say I wont ever fo again but when you get trash in your food literally cooked right in front of you it's hard to ignore my nefew found a splinter of wood in his food it looked like a piece of a blue pallet that freight is shipped on when the manager was notified she apologized and removed his meal from our ticket. I could not eat my meal anymore knowing that that was in all of our meals as this was prepared in bulk on a hibachi grill they should have comped everyone at the table not just one person's meal I felt bad for the other families eating they had no clue it was covered up immediately because the manager took the late splinter and said nothing more to anyone at the hibachi table in my opinion that is a major health concern read more

Worth the wait. The food is excellent and the show of watching it cooked a lot of fun. I've had the hibachi steak and the hibachi chicken and never been disappointed. The sushi is also very good, not what you'd expect in SE NM. For a fun thing try the Ramune, I recommend the watermelon. read more
