The sushi is good. I love the Yellowtail Nigiri, it is my favorite thing on the menu. But my favoite part is the ambiance, the old school japanese aesthetic is charming. It has a very vintage vibe. So grab a Soporro and chopsticks and have yourself a good time! read more

Had high hopes for what I like to call a "mom and pop" quick sushi, the Burnt Out roll was something I enjoyed considering I like all the ingredients that are in/on the roll. I had the hamachi temaki (handroll) and it was simple and to the point. I asked my waitress about the grilled squid, and if she liked it. She was honest and told me she was new, doesn't like squid but lots of customers order it. I like squid fresh, grilled, dried or basically in all of its forms. This one particularly wasn't cooked low and slow, very very chewy and slimy. The restaurant is very quiet, I popped in my headphone for some "background" noise. read more

Really Authentic Sushi! Love this place. The decor and the menu are a really good variety of authentic Japanese dishes + Korean dishes + some "Americanized" dishes to suit a first time sushi eaters taste. There is a nice lunch menu and dinner menu too! I stopped in for lunch and got the spicy tuna hand roll and kimchi fried rice. The portions were generous and the prices were just right. I missed eating chicken kimchi fried rice after moving here from SF and this place hit the spot. It was delicious. If you haven't tried kimchi fried rice, I encourage you to. I went to Tokyo Sushi Bar with a friend for lunch. The food was ok, but nothing to write home about. The sushi was fresh, but the rice was a bit dry. The katsu was crispy, but the sauce was bland. The service was awkward and slow. My friend's katsu took a really long time to come out. I was already done with my plate for 15 minutes before his plate came out. The restaurant was not very busy, so I don't know what the problem was. I don't think I will go back there again. There are better sushi places in town. read more

A little questionable from the outside. The windows are covered so you can't see in but once you are inside it looks really cool!! The sushi rolls are huge and delicious. Dear Tokyo Sushi: Where have you been all my life? Short version: Get edamame, spicy tuna, bulgogi and chirashi bowls. Long Version: Down in south Texas, sushi is becoming THE thing. Yeah yeah, so we're about 5 years behind everyone else. I get it. But it worries me a little. We're good at Mexican food and chinese buffets. Anything having to do with bacteria free raw fish makes me a tad nervous. I've driven by Tokyo Sushi for well on 10 years now, always thinking "oh god, strip mall sushi. Hell no." until Swami G convinced me I MUST go. So we stopped in one Friday night for his famous Chirashi bowl. Now, right off the bat, lemme tell you. The service was horrible. Maybe the worst service I've ever had. It was soooooooo slooooooooow. One server for the whole restaurant. So why 4 stars? The food was that good. We had edamame, spicy tuna, a bibimbap bowl (korean) & Chirashi bowl (also korean.) The bowl of edamame was SO HUGE that we barely got through it. Rich and salty, it started the meal off perfectly. Our spicy tuna and bulgogi bowl came out at the same time. That spicy tuna was just the right amount of spice vs. fish and that elusive flavor that everyone's searching for when the order said roll. The B bowl came with an egg on top. We punctured that sucker, added sriracha, mixed it all up and went to town. After all of that, came this bowl of wonderment. Of course, we were stuffed to the gills, but we managed to find room in our fingers and toes for this magical creation. Seriously, see the pic i posted. One inch square pieces of incredibly fresh tuna and salmon on a bowl of shredded lettuce. These pieces of fish were delectable -- some of the best I've had. I think he took some home. And when do you ever take that kind of stuff home? Moral of the story: Just b/c some place hasn't updated their sign and is located next to a singer sewing machine store doesn't mean that it's not going to blow your mind. read more

This place is the best. THE BEST. I've lived in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Austin, and have visited many sushi houses there and along my travels (including southeast asia), and this is by far the best Japanese/Korean food I've ever had. It's so authentic i though i was spear fishing on a Japanese whaling ship. The fish is fresh and delicious, the bibimbap is hot and tasty, the calamari salad is crisp, the edemame is seasoned with crystal salt and is the freshest I've ever had. It's authentic to the core and completely unpretentious. On top of all this it's pretty damn cheap, if this place ever got big they could triple their prices and it would still be a deal (but they'd have to do something about that decor). "Hidden gem" is an understatement. read more

The best Sushi that I've had in McAllen. Sit @ the bar and chat it up w/ the sushi chefs, ask to taste something new and they will probably give you a sample. I always get sushi combo A or B, it's a few pieces of nigiri and tekka maki. The Ika salad, and Miso Soup are also very good. They have Uni most of the time which is awesome. I like this spot since you can get nice BIG pieces of nigiri, and wonderful Miso. I'm too much of a purist to have any of the Maki stuff, but I'm sure that they are all pretty much good. read more

Small Japanese restaurant. Good food, nice atmosphere. Been going there for 12 years or so and whole the food is still pretty good. The place has been tending down lately. A few examples 1. Steamed rice should be made in smaller batches and remade throughout the day. Leaving them in the pot for too long makes the rice very dry and hard 2. Staff should inform customers when product is out. Ordered a California roll and after eating a couple of pieces realized there was no avocado. When asked the waiter just said "oh, the avocados were bad so we just put more cucumber". Shouldn't the customer be told before ordering that avocado wasn't available. That's like ordering a cheeseburger and given a hamburger because the place ran out of cheese But the tempura is still excellent and the seafood for the sashimi and nigiri sushi is still very fresh read more

Eating here is always a delight. Their sushi is fresh and staff is friendly. It is a little pricier than most of the sushi restaurants in the area but completely worth it. Have visited over 5 times and have yet to be disappointed. read more

This is not your typical Valley Mexican sushi. And I think it's the only joint down here that can claim that. In a sea of artificial crab meat, spicy mayo, tampico paste and Reynosa rolls, Tokyo manages to maintain its Japanese integrity. The bulgogi, veggie tempura, kimchi, bibimbap and sake selection are the stars. They also don't jip you on sauces or edamame (I'm talking to you, Kumori.) Prices haven't changed in years so you can still get full-meal rolls for under $8. Occassionally understaffed, but overwhelmingly legit and delicious. read more

I'll begin by saying I really wanted to like this place. It's always a great pleasure to find a retaurant with good niche food in the wrong region, like sushi in southern Texas. While I've been pleasantly surprised several times, this was pretty much what I thought it would be. The sushi was ok, the service was good, but the wait time is what really killed it for me. I went in during lunch "rush", total of 3 tables and it took almost 30 minutes to get my (2) rolls. The miso soup served first was passable and the soy, jalapeno, lemon sauce for the rolls was interesting and new but overall it was too expensive (25 for two rolls) for too long of a wait for just decent sushi. Also, I was really really surpised that they had ZERO lunch specials for sushi. Just expect more for my time and money. If you have 30 bucks and an hour + I guess you can get decent sushi but I think I'll try another location next time in the valley. S read more

First of all I'm not sure why they call this place a sushi bar. They have sushi, but the bar is not really accessible like a sushi bar should be. I ordered something non-sushi and it tasted like cardboard. I don't know what it is in the valley. People keep trying to make sushi restaurants and "Japanese" food, but it all sucks. Pretty much I've dropped all hope of having a nice meal at a Valley Japanese place because nobody knows what they are doing and all the cuisine sucks. read more

Sushi was not fresh and looked butchered (poor knife skills), yakisoba was very oily and lacked meat and veggies, and their "spicy" ramen is straight from the package and disgusting! this is quite possibly the worst restaurant i've been to in the u.s. I was reluctant to try a sushi place in mcallen, but the featured reviews convinced me...barely. also, I like to give a place the benefit of a doubt. boy, was i wrong! I really don't understand how other reviewers say this is "the best". where are you people eating? If this is the best, I wonder what you consider the worst. my order was simple. hamachi, tako, maguro, ebi, and sake sushi. the rice was a salty soggy overcooked sloppy mess. the fish seemed to have been cut with a dull hacksaw. the hamachi had a dark brown color and the maguro seemed to be glowing. you couldn't really call it sushi. i ordered the teriyaki chicken figuring that even if they bought chicken and teriyaki sauce from HEB, they couldn't really mess it up. Wrong! The chicken was cooked poorly and it was swimming in a watery brown liquid that tried to pass itself off as sauce. the rice was the same as before and the "steamed" vegetables were terrible. again...I can't believe there's anyone that thinks this is servabke food. much less great food. read more

I travel often and eat sushi when I do. This is one of the best sushi places I've been to so far. Mr. Kim, the owner is very knowledgable and knows his trade very well. He is also very nice and welcoming. The Fish is very fresh and the hamachi was tasty. I highly recommend coming to the original sushi bar in McAllen. read more

Usually stay in McAllen for 5 days at a time and coming here is a must for at least 3 dinners. Can't get enough of the Korean chirashi. This place is excellent - for the valley. It's probably the best place I've eaten at down here and should be everyone's go-to sushi destination south of san antonio/houston. They have the standard nigiri items, sushi rolls, and japanese appetizers but they also include in their menu a variety of japanese noodle and rice dishes. In particular, having shoyu ramen and nabeyaki udon on the menu were very surprising although I didn't try them yet (I definitely will.) On this visit I ended up getting korean food also because that's what I was craving today and on my google search this was the only place that seemed to have korean bbq. bulgolgi - Flavor wasn't bad. Meat was a little dry and chewy but maybe they were having an off day. I could see how they were heading in the right direction. galbi - Good! Huge pieces of meat on the bone that I'm definitely not accustomed to seeing. Sushi rolls - I won't comment on the two I got specifically, they were both good and I had very few complaints about either one. One of which was very imaginative actually. They even switched out items (like nori to soy paper) without any comments or extra charges. You get complimentary miso soup! Always a plus. With all that being said...Mike R, to say that this food is by far better than Austin is such a gross over statement I almost have to call it a flat out lie. This might be the most authentic place in the valley but there's still no excuse for 90% of the sushi rolls coming with cream cheese (which you can have taken out, I just would have been more impressed if they had thought up more rolls without it.) Overall, in the valley this place is 4.5 stars. Unfortunately, in the grand scheme I can only award this place 3 stars. read more

Did not enjoy this place at all. I went to go celebrate a friends birthday. As soon as I walked into the place was hot and it reeked. I can't put my hand on it but it didn't smell good at all (and not like fish). It was such a weird atmosphere too. I sat down at the table and it took a while for the waiter to come, when she did she seemed annoyed and bothered that we were there. It was only 4 off us sitting there and when we ordered and got the sushi, i ordered three separate ones for my friends to try. It was the salmon sashimi for $5 each. Although expensive, i was excited for my friends to try it because they've never had it before. Sadly, it tasted horrible. As an avid sushi eater especially for sashimi, the salmon is supposed to be cold. The sashimi was warm almost warmer than room temperature. I was disgusted and wanted to apologize to my friends about even trying them, promising them it tasted better. I will never go again and won't even mention it to anyone else. Great place, My girlfriend and I always sit at the bar. I don't think we've ever eaten at the tables. The chef and staff are very friendly and kept us in good company informing us of every single piece of fish we ate if asked. The nigiri pieces are what we usually get, along with some hot sake. A quick bite that can hit the spot! We usually end up ordering 5-6 pieces each. Overall, became one of my favorite spots, I go there whenever I can! read more

Their Bibinbap is a personal favorite of mine, I actually can't wait to go back for that. Their service is just ok. I wish their waiters knew more about the dishes. Attentive, some are forgetful, and just remind them to take off something if you didnt like it (like the last time my friend and I went and he didn't like the tea, and the waitress still charged him for it).
