This a cozy little place tucked away, but conveniently located near the La Plaza mall. It's nicely decided inside and though it might look small walking in, there's plenty of seating, with some located outside as well. Our waitress seated us right away. My friends and I arrived about 1 pm, and the place started filling up quickly right after. She made several suggestions regarding the lunch menu (all of them good), and seemed to be familiar with all the items on the menu - which is pretty big! As for the food... absolutely delicious! I had the dragon roll, with chicken fried rice, miso soup, and pork dumplings. The servings are VERY ample and you will not walk away hungry! I suggest the bento boxes. VERY reasonably priced and a good sampling of everything. I especially want to call out the chicken fried rice. Amazing food for both sushi and non-sushi lovers! There is usually a long wait when you walk in especially with larger groups however it's definitely worth it, and the mall is next door to pass the time too! It's so cozy inside with beautiful Asian decor in every little nook! Even the plates are cute lol. Once we're seated the server is quick with taking and bringing out our orders. Sushi - I got the chef's selection of nigiri and it was so fresh! My favorite was the tuna nigiri - it felt like it melted in my mouth. I also got some udon soup which was flavorful. I was a little hesitant to come to a sushi place in the valley which is more known for their Mexican foods, but it was located next to my hotel, I wanted something light and quick, so it made sense. Plus, it seemed to be possibly the best sushi restaurant in the valley as well. So I had to try it. Once inside, you can either sit in the main room with the sushi bar, or the back room where at the back of that room is a cocktail bar. Since I dined alone, I opted for the cocktail bar. Although their Korean menu was tempting, it was on the small side. I opted to stick to Japanese since it was my first visit. I ordered the yellowtail kama, sashimi by the piece with 1 of each salmon, yellowtail, mackerel and red snapper, and a moody roll which is supposedly their most popular roll. It looked saucy and had a lot of fish, so I was in. How did it taste? The kama was a great choice. Grilled to perfection and a large collar with a lot of juicy, buttery meat. The sushi was just as good, all fresh and correct temperature. The red snapper sashimi may have been the best one of the bunch. The moody roll was definitely saucy and filling. Its a huge roll with not 8, but 9 pieces!! I had such a large lunch, that I couldn't even finish all 9 pieces. Service was great the entire time. This turned out to be my favorite restaurant I visited during my 2 day trip to McAllen. read more

Our server, I can't remember his name said he was assisting another server but he did all the work and was so helpful and attentive, and made the experience even better. We started with the shumai - small but delicious, so much flavor. We did the appetizer Sashimi as well and the fish tasted so fresh! Ended with two rolls; the Tropical Roll and the Crunchy Roll. Tropical roll was a 10/10 on flavor and presentation, definitely recommend. The Crunchy Roll - if you're looking for spice this is a good one for you. The kick this roll had was super spicy. Are you looking to consume approximately 2319 pounds of food? Then the Yasuke bento box dinner is for you! But be willing to pay quite a bit for it...varrying in price depending on protein selection, the box comes with mixed tempura, pork dumplings, rice, and a small salad. (Do not be fooled by the menu that indicates you also receive 6 sashimi slices, this is not true. Instead it comes with a basic sushi roll). For an up charge, you can order one of the specialty rolls instead but do be warned a lot of their rolls are largely consisting of the same ingredients so this may not be worth it. All entrees also come with miso soup so be prepared to have no room on the table if that is something that might overwhelm you! The restaurant is dimly lit and has a more relaxed vibe which can be a nice feeling from the hustle and bustle off the streets of McAllen. As for service, our waiter was friendly and helpful and I have no complaints there- just wish he would have told us what a mountain of food we would be receiving! The size of the bento box was surprising and we definitely could have gotten away with sharing. The quality of the food itself could have been better for the prices and I have a sneaking suspicion they may leave out some crucial ingredients on the menu due to the very clear allergy rash I was surprised to find when I arrived home having been sure I hadn't consumed any of my allergen. This place gets 5 stars for being the only Japanese restaurant in the valley that doesn't force Cheetos and cream cheese into all their sushi. There's good nigiri, sashimi, rolls, temaki, and also donburi, udon, ramen (it's ok), Katsu, and plenty other classic Japanese dishes that make you feel warm inside. It's Korean owned so there's also some Korean food on the menu. I haven't tried it but I'm sure it's good too. The service here is hit or miss, if the manager is here he's attentive and quick, otherwise you might get some other employee that's not that excited to be there. All good though, everyone's polite and there's a sushi bar inside and the lighting is low near there. I enjoy coming here and it's definitely one of the most popular restaurants in the valley. Here's the thing. Originally this place was located on 10th street near the mall. It was a bit of a gem, not many people knew about it. It was small, intimate, but excellent. I still stand behind my thought of it being the best restaurant in the valley. Then what happens when a business starts seen success, happened. They started expanding. First it came with a physical addition to the restaurant by adding a hideous wing next door. Ok. Everyone went with it. The quality of the restaurant wasn't too bothered. Next their long time sushi chef left (red flag). The restaurant continued getting more attention, long lines to get in, etc, etc. Then the final blow came with them moving their location to its current place now. Turns out the place they chose was a funeral home at some point, don't care too much about that. But now the thing is, it feels a like a Chuckee Cheese, long gone is that quaint, private, excellent, hidden gem of a sushi restaurant it once was. Skip it. Not worth it anymore. read more

I recommend calling ahead to see if you can get a reservation as it was already packed at 6 when we got there :-) Our server was Gabby H (according to our receipt) and she did a wonderful job. Super kind, made recommendations, was so attentive to our waters (we were sooo thirsty)... I was craving tofu so I got a whole lot of tofu dishes. The hiyayakko tofu starter was of course pretty bland (as it's supposed to be) so I recommend a sauce on the side if you love the texture of tofu but aren't crazy about the flavor. I still bodied it, lol. My friend grabbed the cheese tempura which was just alright but still good! The katsu curry was DELISH. I have never seen a curry sauce this thick but it was so flavorful and the texture was amazing. It wasn't my dish so I can't go on about it much - but this was also what the waitress recommended and she was very right! We shared the spicy vegetable roll which had a striking umami flavor and a great balance of vegetables. The tako nigiri was chewy and well crafted, same with the tobiko. (If you're new, I wouldn't recommend things like tobiko or masago if you hate boba. Lol!) My main dish was the tofu & kimchi which was... bottom line... incredible. The tofu was prepared to a perfect firm texture, the pork was sliced very thin (perfect to wrap rice up in), the kimchi was just the right amount of sour, the sauce tied everything together well. And it came with miso soup! Which was a smart offset for when my palate got tired. The place isn't small, but isn't too big, which I appreciate. I didn't get to look around much but the noise level was perfect for me (I'm really sensitive to that kind of thing). They also had an outdoor seating area! Will never eat here again. Orfered online for my family and made sure to list my gluten free needs. They had an allergen section in the ordering area, so I figured it wasn't an issue. I ordered one of the sushi rolls. I picked it up curbsise, and when I got home, saw that the crab in the roll was fried. Two things with fried food. Gluten in the breading, and the fact that it's been fried in the same fryer as everything else (gluten-containing foods). These two things made my roll inedible. It'very disturbing because if I were Celiac and ate it, I would have gotten very sick. I mean, imagine if I had an allergy to peanuts and they ignored it? Peanut oil is used in some restaurants for frying. Their incompetence is frightening. My bother had ordered nigiri, so he swapped me, but the tuna was very hard to bite through ...sinewy. Honestly, this place is not bad. For the valley it's probably as good as you're gonna get your sushi. For people who want real Japanese sushi though, you're going to leave a little disappointed. The rolls are stuffed too big, and come with atypical ingredients. For this reason, they also suffer by constantly falling apart. The fish is actually surprisingly fresh, but the cuts leave a lot to be desired. There's too much rice for the nigiri, and the fish is a little too thick as well. However, apart from all the flaws and my misgivings, it's a decent place to get your sushi fix. At the very least, the atmosphere is nice and the place is cute for dates. The service has a lot to work on attentiveness wise. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this place, it's just not as great as people make it out to be. read more

We ordered 6 pieces of nigiri, salmon, tuna and octopus and those were all good. We ordered a dragon roll as well and that wasn't good, at all -- eel was falling apart and tasted extremely fishy. We removed all of the eel and ate the rest of the roll because we were hungry but honestly wish we would have ate leftovers or got tacos. It's been awhile since I've been here. Unfortunately, it's not as good as I wanted to remember it being. Maybe change in sushi chefs, not sure. This is the second time however, I've asked for a certain glass of wine off the menu and I've been told they're out. I always have to ask "easy on the rice" and it's still too much. Also, too much cream cheese are in the rolls. I've had to take apart my rolls just to eat the inside and not stuff myself with all of the rice and cream cheese. I also ordered a tempura roll....it was cold and I question the tempura batter....it was just too thick - what happened to hot and crispy? Came here during a work trip dinner. Got the steak bento box. I'm not sure how Sushi and asian food is on average in the Rio Grande Valley, but I felt Yasuke was pretty bad in quality. Service was fine. The sushi reminded me of grocery store sushi. I've never seen california rolls with chunks of fake crab instead of shreds. The rice was overcooked. We went on a Tuesday night around 8:30pm. Only a 10 minute wait. Very well decorated with hanging tapestries, portraits, figurines. Drinks: 1. Buffalo Kanpai- if you like ginger and mint with a not too sweet a taste this is it. On the rock. 2. Tokyo SideCar- very smooth- Japanese infused the waiter said something about importing an ingredient somewhere for this drink. On the rock. 3. LA Roll- wrapped in soybean paper was the best- didn't think it wld be bc not really a fan of cream cheese- also had crab, shrimp, avocado, cucumber 2. Spicy Tuna - it was alright - the tuna was raw- nice fresh and the chili powder on top made more flavors comes out- no just raw fish and soy sauce. 3. Dragon roll - had the cooked fish on top, I always love this roll- with the sauce on top & u have everything in it- crab, eel, avocado, cucumber (8 pieces) 4. Spicy Yasuke - they were big and i has the chili powder on the side (never tasted it with it ) . Has salmon, tai, tuna, crab, spring mix, avocado - I was definitely full. (8 pieces) 5. Philadelphia Roll - topped with smoked salmon - same as the LA Roll just not wrapped with soybean paper and doesn't have shrimp. 6. The bartender was nice, the food didn't take a lot and it was a good amount too. I had two sushi rolls, and I was feeling pretty stuffed after.
