I looked around for some repair services online and the best I could get was a week away, from Hogans. Then somehow Dick's Appliances popped up on my screen and I gave him a call. As he looked through his schedule I was thinking, oh man, I hope this guy doesn't make me wait a week also, then he said, "I can be there around 3:00 today, "Awesome I responded." Not having a fridge really sucks. Then he called back to say he could be over at 11:00 AM. "Great." I had the fridge pulled out and the bottom cover off. He immediately noticed that something down there wasn't even plugged in. When he plugged it I think we both expected the fridge to start humming, but we got nothing. Then he said, "your fridge must be in defrost mode." He pulled out a straight edge screwdriver, and under the cover, in the middle of the top of the fridge section, he turned a screw about 1/4 turn and, "Hmmmmm! Music to my ears. It was a simple fix and my worries of having to buy a new fridge melted away. His name is actually Dave and he was in and out in 10 minutes. Fantastic. He could have ripped me off and said all kinds of things were wrong with the unit but he's an honest guy. Thanks, Dave. Well Done. I will always call him first for any kind of appliance repair.

Update: The repair didn't quite work. The dryer heats now, but it cuts out in the middle of a…read morenormal (automatic) cycle. When the diagnostic tech came out the first time, he banged on the solenoids, and that got them partially working. But the repair Hargo did didn't change that. So they didn't diagnose the problem properly. What really irks me is that they want to charge another $90 to send someone out to do another diagnostic. Old review: Hargo just got done fixing my dryer, and it seems to be in perfect working order now. They also gave me some good advice on getting a better exterior vent. The total turn-around time for me was about a week. I gave them the exact model of my dryer, but the diagnostic guy who showed up a few days ago didn't come prepared with any parts, so I had to wait a few more days, and they were only quick on the second visit because I called just after they'd had a cancelation. But that was really lucky. It seems that Hargo is one of the few appliance repair places in town, so they're absolutely slammed with everyone's repairs. Even just calling them on the phone, I get put on hold for extended periods every time, so the phones are ringing off the hook. I talked to their tech about that, and my take-away is that they're actively trying to hire both techs and customer service reps, but there just isn't enough available workforce. And their employees have to work over time to barely keep up with the demand. They charge $109 just to come out and diagnose the problem, and I can see why. I would not want to send a tech out for a potentially lengthy diagnostic, for free, when they could be making revenue on a real repair job. Overall, their total charge for the repair wasn't bad, considering how labor has dominated repair costs since the 1970's. Bottom line: They'll do a good job, but manage your expectations on the time. It's going to take a while for your repair to get done, because there are heck of a lot of other people in the queue ahead of you.

It is sad when a reputable business grows old and has new management who do not have the same…read moreservice standards as the old hands. This is the case with Shaul's in Johnson City, NY. I have been a customer more than 30 years and I am disappointed with the service on a 10 week old electric stove I just bought from them when I called the store for help. Part of the stove door cracked and when I tried to explain the problem the manager cut me off and said to me "You broke it." But he has not even seen the broken stove. Then he went on to explain that the manufacturer, Whirlpool, would not cover the repair under warranty. But I didn't break it. It really is a manufacturing defect or a design defect in my opinion as a retired professional engineer who has evaluated many electrical equipment problems. The manager offered to send his service man at my cost, but I found out that they are not a certified service shop for Whirlpool. I smelled rotten fish at this point and called for Whirlpool service, who were responsive. My experience and opinion is that this store wants to charge for their service when its free from the manufacturer and they do not help the customer with legitimate warranty service. Shaul's blames the customer without even looking at the problem. Not good at all.
