Anytime I come through the experiences between Sales and Service, I have never felt welcome, more or less a hinderance. This store shouldn't bear the Tonkin name as the Tonkin stores in Portland blow this one out of the water, give it to Gresham Subaru since they're under that umbrella truly, look it up! We traded a vehicle in on a Friday and asked for the tires to be switched out. We were told to come in anytime on Monday before 4 to do that and we didn't need an appointment. We live 45 minutes away, went in at 8:30 Monday morning and was told by Bo they couldn't get it in until Wednesday. Wasted 2 hours of time between driving and waiting for this answer. After I left several messages around 1:30 or so, Josh said he told Junior to tell us to leave the vehicle and they'd get it done that day. That message didn't come across while at the shop. When they did get us in a few days later, they charged $140 with no apology or discount even after I asked for a discount. I did find out later the vehicle we bought was cheaper somewhere else. I should have done more research, but they also weren't willing to budge on the price or trade in value. Between that, the misinformation and not willing to make it right, we don't highly recommend them for purchase or for service. read more

Great car buying experience. I got a good estimate from another dealer in Lewiston, ID and they beat it. Easy negotiations. The best was when they called me the next day to say they accidentally charged a higher APR than they should have and asked us to come back to resign the loan papers at a 1% lower rate. Tonkin Subaru - Car Dealers Near Me - The Dalles, Oregon

Went into this place years ago to look at what cars they had. Didn't want to trade, just love sightseeing at car dealerships, especially Subaru. Was driving a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek and had a Subaru shirt on. Even though I didn't want to buy, I figured it would be a fun adventure as other dealership sightseeing trips had been in the past. Unfortunately I was wrong, very wrong. The customer service was absolutely horrid. There was absolutely zero love in my visit. I strongly encourage this dealership to reread the Subaru Love Promise, because they have as of then completely forgot or didn't care about what it stands for. I am not certain if the customer service has improved since then, but I will never know. I usually give businesses 3 chances before I blacklist them, but the fact that they laughed at me for showing and expressing how much I loved Subaru was a total letdown. Do NOT buy a new vehicle from Tonkin Chevrolet in The Dalles. They will sell you a brand new vehicle that is a total piece of garbage and when it breaks they CANNOT fix it and you will get the run around as it sits in their shop. They won't take it back as a trade-in because they know it's a lemon. Instead of saying no they low-balled us. Our 2024 pickup has been towed out of our driveway three times completely dead and GMC tells us that it's not a lemon, and that there is nothing wrong with it. Customer service is clearly not their strong suit. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else! read more

They put the wrong oil in my car not once, but twice. Even after having it documented and my verbal request to put in synthetic oil instead of conventional. This led to me driving further than I should have and destroying my engine. They apologized and offered me wholesale prices and half cost labor, but I would not be in this predicament if they used the oil I have always been putting into my car. Attention to these details will earn my trust a a customer. Now I have to pay over 5k for a mistake that could have been avoided. To add insult to injury, one of the mechanics literally yelled his opinion of the matter at me. I can't in good conscience give my business or trust to this dealership. I have filed cases with Subaru and my insurance company to no avail. I will look to small claims court and the BBB next. read more

Tonkin Subaru in The Dalles, OR...Chris is awesome. Every time I come in for scheduled maintenance auto repairs or oil changed he is on top of it EVERY TIME! Doesn't matter how busy it is here he goes way out of his way to help me out. Tommy in parts is solid too. Hit a deer only needed to replace the side mirror covers. Came in Tommy ordered it for me and was shipped right to my house so I didn't need to come in and be charged more than what the part cost. Today I accidentally missed my appointment at Subaru and Jennifer was able to get me in same day no hassle/Chris and Tommy were able to help me with my tires (totally separate issue) so I don't have to come back twice. The mechanics are very timely and professional. In general this service center has been an extremely positive experience every time. I trust bringing my car here for any maintenance, love having peace of mind the quality being done is highest of standards and truly enjoy the employees who work here. Traveling to TD from HR my car suddenly lost power steering AC and there were multiple text warnings flashing. Pulled into Tonkin Chevy GMC ( my vehicle Cadilliac). Mary checks me in James starts the other processes Mary makes sure I can get back home to Hood River so I'm not stranded for lord knows how long. I can't believe that no one has written a review for Bob Stone Subaru aka Bob Stone Freeway Auto Center. They are the absolute best! I took my 2012 Subaru Outback in for service last week. My car is new and I probably wouldn't have gone all the way to The Dalles (about a 20 minute drive) just to get the oil changed at the dealership, but I needed a small computer adjustment that only the dealer can perform, so I scheduled all the service at the same time. My experience was superb from the moment I stepped in the door. The entire place, even the garage bays, were immaculate (I'm a clean/neat freak, so this is a huge plus in my book). The waiting area featured fresh coffee, treats, wifi, comfy leather chairs and even a fireplace! Henry, my service adviser couldn't have been nicer, more polite or more thorough. When I mentioned that I had a water stain on my back seat (they're white - what was I thinking?!) and asked if there was anything they could do, he said "absolutely" and agreed to have their detailer look at it- I was thrilled, especially since I hadn't included the water stain in my initial call to set up the appointment. I mentioned that I needed to run a few errands down the street and within a minute or two, a driver was escorting me to the complimentary shuttle van. I ran my errands, grabbed a Starbucks and walked back to the dealership (it was close to everything) and before I knew it, my car was finished. Best of all, that pesky water stain was gone! Henry could clearly see how happy this made me, so he took the extra time to explain how I could do it myself next time and if that wasn't enough, he ran and grabbed a can of the miracle stain remover for me. Awesome!! When it came time to check out, the cost for everything was incredibly reasonable and they didn't even charge me to get the water stain out. I'll say it again - awesome! I know sometimes people hesitate to bring their cars to dealers for service, thinking the cost might be higher, but honestly, Bob Stone is worth every penny and I don't think the cost is actually any more than your local mechanic! I should also include a great review for the nice guys that sold me the car at the Bob Stone dealership in Hood River. Craig and Ray were fabulous to work with and the whole process of buying my car was a breeze! I even got some great hiking tips while waiting for my paperwork to get finished. Clearly this is a business who cares about its patrons as well as its community. If you can do business with them, do!! read more

Unbelieveable sales experience which for me culminated in a car last week. Jorge Lujano did the job when I came down to look at two cars and he steered me towards the better vehicle which happened to be the slightly lower priced one as well. By this point I knew to act fast, their prices had just dropped, the cars were amazing and I appreciate Jorge pursuing what's the ideal for his customer and not merely what was convenient (I'd have bought either car). As amazing as this was my experience actually continued to improve from there as my paperwork was being processed and I was dealing with Steve Ross. It'd be impossible to convince me they are not flat out looking out for the welfare of their customers. I had such exceptional quality care of service, the many many ways Steve helped thru Tonkin was, it is unmatched in my experience for things that fall into the 'above and beyond' category...things they didn't even have to do, but as a business creed choose to do. The sales department here may be great, but the service department needs improvement. I came in about my 2014 Subaru Forester that has had a bad head unit (essentially the radio), as it has never been able to bluetooth connect despite all recommended steps for troubleshooting. I have a warranty plan for the car issued by CarMax, and it covers everything except wear parts. The guy at the counter was outright rude, complete lack of professionalism and customer service attitude. He did not want to have to actually use his computer to look up the number to call for the plan in order to verify coverage. He seemed annoyed, I think because primarily if they can't make money off you without a lot of effort, they are not interested in helping you. I was looking at the search results on the screen to help him to pick the right one, when he said "I am the only one here today", and then turned to the customer behind me and proceeded to help him. I walked out. I don't care if you are the only one there, you don't get to ignore a customer because it requires you to expend some effort. What I was asking him to do was absolutely no different than when they call to verify insurance coverage from any standard provider - he just "doubted" my coverage because he had never heard of it, and shook his head in disbelief when I told him they would cover it - he would not give me even the courtesy of allowing me to complete my sentence - he just said that they will deny it at first - as if he knows it all. I think in general when there is a lack of good competition such as there is here - they think they can treat you any way they want. read more

AVOID TONKIN Chevrolet!!! I bought a new 2018 Chevy Colorado V6 3.6l 4x4 crew cab WT in November of 2017. It has been using oil between regular changes since new. ?!! I went to the dealer and they said up to 3 quarts between 6000 mile change intervals is "normal"?!! What they call "normal" is NOT GOOD for your engine nor the environment. That is just bad engineering. A new engine should never consume any oil. This is the first new car and the first Chevy I have ever owned. I doubt this engine will go over 100k. Now at 40k it has a rough idle. Within 3000 mile of an oil change its 1qt low. You will know to check oil when you feel the knock!! I bought a new truck so I wouldn't have to constantly worry about maintenance and repair only to find I will need to be checking the oil every few days to prevent running low and blowing up the engine!!! Chevy warranty will not protect you from design and manufacturing flaws. Total BS ! read more

This is for the GMC service department. I have worked in the industry for many years and never experienced such incompetence. I never received a call on a true diagnosis and cost of repairs. I get a call stating my car is done. Go to pick it up and there is $330 labor for low beam headlights for a terrain. Obviously the mechanic is an idiot and can't figure it out without charging hours of labor. Make the drive into Gresham. These guys suck! read more

Tonkin Subaru in The Dalles has a very poor service department. I'd avoid them at all costs. I was in there yesterday and they were supposed to program my new keys and fob, when I left and went home I noticed my doors were not locking or unlocking as they are supposed to. I took it back and asked them to fix it. The service department manager basically got in my face and told me I was a liar and they did not fix the car. All I wanted and paid for was the reprogramming of my new key and fob, but got hassled instead. I left their dealership with a bad taste in my mouth because my car was working perfectly before they touched it. I seriously will not ever take another car in to them for ANY reason. They need to learn what customer service is. read more

Had a vehicle worked on at Tonkin GM, The Dalles. I had an 8am appointment, I dropped off the vehicle and told them what needed to be fixed, 8 hours later they called and said the found a problem, it was the problem I told them about when I dropped it off. So after 8 hours nothing was done to my vehicle. 2 days later, Tonkin called and said my vehicle was done. After paying for the repairs, I went out and found all my personal items were thrown all over the place in the back seat, also, someone had lifted up the front armrest spilling everything inside, pens, coins, and a bunch of other junk all over into the back floor and didn't pick it up, they just left it there. I went in a spoke to a " manager", and acted as though he didn't give a rat's behind about my problem. I'll NEVER do business with these people, NEVER!!! read more

The salesperson was not very responsive and either were the others while I was buying the car. Papers weren't sent on time, either was the fob battery and the fob didn't work, the trunk was not very clean, no spare and I had asked for one, they couldn't bother to tell me where the car was from since I didn't want one from the coast. I looked in the glove compartment after I got home and the car was a rental car from Hawaii. The only employees that were helpful were the two female employees that finally got the title sent, many weeks later and sent me a check to cover reprogramming the fob. One said she would let the owner or manager know cuz they would want to call me, that didn't happen. I would not recommend this dealership......... read more

"General Manager / Owner of Tonkin Subaru" Scott Sidell ?, "Sales Manager" Steve Leavitt, "Sales Manager " Ariel Sanchez This three people have done nothing but lie to me, I ordered a 2017 Subaru STI and when the car arrived after waiting for 3 months I got a call from Ariel Sanchez letting me know that the car is ready to be picked up, Then he said "But thats the good News" The bad news is that "Sales Manager "Steve Leavitt & Owner Scott Sidell said that he will not Honor the Price i was given because the car is in high demand and they want to sell It for all the Money. That to me is Called "Bait- AND- Switch". I find that this is just wrong, Because if they were not going to sell the car for the agreed amount all they had to do is "SAY NO" at the time that they took my Subaru STI order or in a reasonable time like 1- 5 weeks after I Ordered the car but not 3 months later when the car has arrived. I know Ed Tonkin and Brad Tonkin have better things to do than to receive an Email from someone like me, but I needed to make sure that I know that someone cares about how customers get treated in a Tonkin Dealership. I will write a letter to Subaru of America and the Attorney General for Oregon to make sure that others don't get this type of abuse. read more

The buying experience was great. The service is where the problems started. The receptionist is reluctant to let you even speak with the service center - the last time I called I was told to just come get in line. When I stated that I needed an appointment to swap the snow tires out she conceded and transferred me. Service guy gets my info, informs me that, due to a recall, I need the stereo software updated. Along with the tire swap, regular oil and air filter change, it will be 2 weeks before they can schedule me. Drove the scary car to work today so esposo could take our one year old, purchased brand new Crosstrek in for service. The promptly inform him that it is only scheduled for the software update. They eventually agree to do the oil and filter change but refuse to swap out the tires because it takes too much time. Also, no loaners. They only change out the cabin air filter in the name of "saving you money." They recommended both be replaced 2 services ago, we only asked them to do it because the part store replacements do not fit. Something is seriously wrong with this service center. Buy a flipping car somewhere else and don't even try for service here. read more

Would not recommend this dealer to anyone. Way over priced asked if they would price match because they had the exact car we were looking for. They told us it was the best price out there which wasn't true. Ended up buy car from Longview dealership for $5,900 less. Asked about a car in the show room as well and was told only way we could test drive it was if we bought it. Bought a new Outback limited with all the same options, exact same car, same color, spent less than an hour in dealership paid cash. read more

Our sales guy was great! He helped us find what we were looking for while being honest about everything we looked at. They were very patient as we went through several cars before making a final decision. Only negative thing was the lady who did the final paperwork. She was pushy and got a bunch of stuff messed up with our credit union. But overall we got what we wanted and left happy. read more

My husband and I stopped @ the dealership on December 23rd while in The Dalles for a Christmas visit. We had a 2006 Tahoe that was making an unusual noise and decided we needed to have it looked at and verify that it will be safe to travel home with after the holiday. The service department was able to get us in right away thanks to both Jeff and Tom. While waiting for the diagnosis we decided to stretch our legs and walked around looking at new cars. In comes Caleb. He asked us if we needed any questions answered and we explained to him why we were there. My husband and I both knew we were going to at some point in the near future need to replace our beloved Tahoe but were not really planning on doing it at that time and especially not during christmas time. Then we fell in love with the subaru outbacks. After several attempts to walk away from those new cars and continue to wait for the diagnosis on our Tahoe we decided to drive one. Caleb was very accommodating and never did we feel pressured as we made our decision on what to do. Needles to say we left that day with a brand new subaru outback and we love it. We have owned it less than a month now and we have already put on approx 3000 miles. Thanks to the team for the no pressure sales and to the service department for getting us in without needing an appointment. We will definitely be bringing it to your dealership for any future maintenance that may need scheduled even though it is an 1 1/2 hr drive. Unfortunately, it has been one this after another with our new Forester. My family boight two within three days, and the same issues were had with both We opted to have the windows tinted, and after waiting 4 hours longer than the time they told us the appointment would take, BOTH of the cars had issues. One had bubbles, tears in the corners, and the tinting didnt even go edge to edge. The other had chunks of dirt, material, sand and debris under it all over one of the windows. Not only did they both have to be redone (with one still having minor bubbles and mistakes) they also didn't want to give us the certificate of application! We had to go back and forth many times to get it (even though it is LAW to provide it). Now come to find out they don't actually install the bumper license plate mounts, but just screw it right into your front bumper instead. When one person called about it he was told SOL, but my husband called and a different person told him to bring it back in and they would do whatever they could to get it taken care of. So which is it? They will do something to make it right, or we are just shit out of luck with holes in our bumper where they aren't supposed to be. I called another Subaru dealership in Portland, and they said that is absolutely not how they do it there. I am wishing I would have gone to Portland instead of staying local. I would not recommend anyone to have any aftermarket/none stock installations done there, nor would I ever take my business there again. read more

We drove 4 hours to come see a truck at Tonkin Subaru that we were led to believe was in great condition, with minimal damage to the passenger chair. What we found when we got there were multiple dents along the passenger side of the vehicle, wheels had scratches, tires were close to bald, and extensive damage to the interior. This included the seat that we were told about along with scratches to both rear door arm rests. Under the hood was damage to the firewall, and a lot of wires had been wrapped in black electrical tape as they had been changed. We were very displeased with the service provided by our sales rep Stan Case who had led us to believe this truck was in pristine condition. We will never waste or time with this dealership again! read more
