Played a men's USTA league match the other day right at Foothills Tennis & Swimming Club. Arrived 45 minutes before the 11am match. Huge parking lot, surrounded by 10 foot hedge of trees blocking out any view of busy Foothill expressway. 7 lighted tennis courts, with benches and giant drinking jugs, with paper cups. Hopefully replenished daily! Nearby, a 75 foot swimming pool, suitable for lap swimming and swim contests. Beautiful clubhouse with plush sitting chairs for enjoying that drink after a hard fought tennis match. Went to the bathroom, opened the door, and a row of gleaming stalls over a spotless baby blue floor surface. Thought I had entered the ladies bathroom, and quickly hurried out, checking the sign on the door. No lady screaming, so I guess this is the right place. Exercise room and locker room for changing and taking showers. Very elaborate tiled shower room more suitable for a mansion. Tennis courts are blue and super fast. Built correctly facing north and south, but with no partitions between the courts. A ball could roll over three contiguous courts. Separate benches for each doubles team to sit on. At least one player is 80, and still has wheels for moving on that court. Another player makes me look thin, and I'm on the obese side! But he gets everything back that he can reach, and anticipates every shot you make. 90 minutes later, sweat running down my eyes, partially closed with stinging sun lotion from rubbing my hands over my forehead, I trudge off the court, and enjoy refreshments of Costco sandwiches and soda and beer with the locals. If you want the fancier food you got to play on a mixed doubles team with a woman captain! Was about to take a shower in the men's room, but there's a note that only members may shower. Got to trudge back to the oven like temperatures in the car, on this 82 degree March day, and stew in my own BO. There goes the new car smell in my 2017 Civic! $800 a quarter in maintenance fees. About on par with the other private tennis clubs in exclusive Palo Alto, where the median house price exceeds $3 million. But best high schools academically in California. If you have a spouse and 3 kids who swim and play tennis , you can get what you pay for.

As a complete beginner to the game, I have been extremely impressed by Hugo's patience, temperament, and clarity over the last year in which we've worked together. Hugo puts tremendous care into his coaching; every minute in the lesson is spent intentionally and built upon things learned from the prior lessons. I have complete trust that Hugo will challenge me in every lesson and get me to improve week after week; all I have to do is show up. Hugo is particularly adept at explaining technique, making sure that even a beginner such as myself is learning with the correct form from the get-go. I have strongly recommended Hugo to all of my friends who are in search of a tennis instructor in the Palo Alto area. My search is certainly over. Anyone would be lucky to have Hugo as an instructor!

Hugo breaks down complicated techniques into easy-to-grasp concepts during our lessons. His step-by-step approach allows me to learn at my own pace without feeling overwhelmed or like I'm getting lectured. Hugo has an uncanny way of remembering exactly where we left off at the end of each lesson. When we start the next session, he knows just how to help me build on what I've already learned. Thanks to Hugo, I can now hold my own when playing friendly games. My tennis journey is just starting, and I couldn't have a better coach helping me improve. I would highly recommend Hugo to anyone wanting to level up their tennis game.

No, free weekday morning tennis at Cuesta Tennis Center while the clubhouse was closed. We've been playing here since July 2020. 3/18/2020 clubhouse closed. 7/18/2020 clubhouse open weekends 8am-2pm. 1/2/2021 clubhouse open 4-930pm weekdays and 8am-5pm weekends. 3/2/2021 clubhouse open 2-930 weekdays and 8am-5pm weekends. Playing tennis was free on weekday mornings until now. Came to play tennis 6/29/2021 to be greeted by sign saying "Starting June 28 9am weekday openings for pro shop. All players are required to sign in with an MVT Mindbody account. " On the next court are four players, each of them required to fill out the Mindbody account. Residents play for free on a walk on court. Two players are nonresidents, and have to pay $5 each for an hour of play. This is $5 per player, not per court , to play 9am to 10am. At 10am, the two nonresidents have to stop play and report to the clubhouse and each pay another $5 for a second hour of walk on court, as reservations are for 1 hour increments. If you have 3 nonresidents, you would pay the maximum $15 per hour for a walk on reservation. The nonresident player made arrangements to play 9am to 1030am, paying $7.50. Only he's returns to the clubhouse at 10:35am, and is billed $5 for play from 10am to 11am. Shortly before 9am, I report to the clubhouse, and fill out a MVT Mindbody account. I take a picture of the QR code, and fill out the on line application right on my phone. Mandatory inclusion of name, address. Boxes for filling out cell phone, e-mail, DOB, credit card number, expiration date. At least they didn't ask for social security number! The other three nonresident players balk at filling out the application and leave. Nonresidents can still play for free at Cuesta before 9am or 12noon to 2pm on weekdays. Two of our players balked at playing at 730am -needed their beauty rest! Want to play during prime time, weekdays after 5pm, or weekends? Walk on reservations difficult, as all 12 courts in use. There is a $5 per court light fee. $11 per hour per court for Mountain View resident reservation, and $15 per hour per court for nonresident reservation. Kinks in the system linking Mindbody accounts and the reservation system. No advance court reservations at this time. Next week we are playing at Sunnyvale Tennis Center, with courts at $8 per hour before 4pm, if the person making the reservation is a Sunnyvale resident. A 1.5 hour reservation would be $12, compared to $22.50 at Cuesta. Not that it would matter to these retired guys, as they all earn far too much to qualify for stimulus checks!
