My daughter has been going to the dentist since she was about 18months old. Over the last couple of years she developed a lot of dental anxiety that stemmed from a gag reflex that increasingly got worse as she got older. We decided to take her to a pediatric dentist vs a general dentist because we thought she would have a better experience. Her first visit went pretty well, she did struggle but the team helped her through her visit and did inform us she needed treatment. We brought her back for a second visit with nitrous to help her anxiety. Due to her anxiety, she was very scared and took some breaks but eventually got through the treatment. The assistant, Joanna, was very sweet and helpful. Most of the appointment we were sitting in the room just waiting for Dr. Spatz to come in. I do understand my daughter was scared and nervous but we were waiting upwards of 20 minutes at a time for the doctor to come back to the room. For example, she would come in with a mirror and explorer check the area then leave, then come back 20 mins later, then she would gel her, then leave, come back 20+ mins, give anesthetic, then leave for another 30+ minutes. The whole process took about 2 hours for one occlusal filling. The Doctor asked me to leave a review at the end of our visit, so here I am. During the time the doctor was in the room, she very clearly expressed her frustration with my daughters anxiety. She made a comment saying "we cant do this, I cant do this!", and snatched her gloves off and walked out of the room. This was because when she tried to insert a cheek retractor/bite block, my daughter started to gag. She also made a comment about my daughters brushing during her filling appointment. I did explain to her that we recently had a house fire and she lost all her belongings, including electric toothbrush, so she's been using a manual one in the meantime. The dentist responded to me she herself uses a manual tooth brush and that's not the issue. The issue here is not the comment by the Dr, its the way she did said it. The way she tried to belittle my thought process. It was very condescending and at that moment, I knew this was not the best fit for our family. During her filling appointment my daughter was supposed to get a bwx/pa of another area but it was not taken. At her initial visit we were told she had 2 areas of concern, which quickly changed to one area during her filling visit. I am quite certain the tx turned to a "watch" due to the teams frustration with my daughters anxiety. Her appointment that was made for her 2nd visit was pushed out "6 months" to watch. This appointment was changed without my knowledge. I only knew because the morning of her scheduled appointment, I called to confirm because I did not receive any reminders. Either way, from December to March that's 4 months. I am also not comfortable "watching" decay. I was also told, "its a baby tooth and might fall out soon". And since her last visit was rough it will "only be worse next time". I should have went with my first instinct with this office. When I first scheduled, I shortly after received a spam call with all my families information due to their online scheduling system being hacked. I am a very open minded person and not against patient education. I do not deny that my daughter was "difficult" and I am sure it was frustrating trying to work with her dental anxiety/nervousness. However, being at a pediatric office, I thought the Dr would be more sensitive to this and to have her visibly show her frustration mixed with an insensitive bedside manner is the reason why I am switching offices. read more

Update: this place is still awesome. Everyone is fantastic. We have also seen Dr. Patel and she is fantastic as well! I highly recommend this dentist's office. I wish Drs. Spatz and Patel had been my dentists when I was a kid. So grateful for the infectious disease mitigations in place as well: health checks, masks required for everyone, air filters (HEPA, etc) in each room, disinfectants, hand sanitizer. read more

The feelings from the previous review have not changed. I continue to wish I had such a wonderful dental experience when I was a kid, and perhaps I wouldn't be scared of going to the dentist as a full blown adult! But it has only improved at Tooth Buds. They were overly cautious (and continue to be) during the Pandemic which has put all of us at ease. The hygienists and dentists all had double masks and face shields, but the kids still got to enjoy their favorite tv shows while donning sunglasses (not re-used). Too cool. And to our surprise, we have worked with a new dentist our last couple of times, Dr. Patel, who was truly awesome. You sometimes doubt a new dentist (or any 'new hire') can replicate the experience from the person you originally liked. But she did! Her knowledge seemed unbelievably high as she pointed out the reasons for certain things happening in my kids' teeth as it related to development, bone structure, and roots in gums that actually made sense. But I think more impressive was that she was fun with the kids. She had the perfect 'kid doctor' persona that managed to be kind and playful with them while still getting all the way in their mouths. If I got that far in there, they'd bite my hand off!! It seems a bit silly to be so effusive about a dental practice, but when one of your kid's suffers from debilitating anxiety and he actually ASKS you if he can go back to the dentist, you know something special is going on! read more

Consistently the worst front desk staff experience that i have ever had at any medical professional's office. Rude, patronizing, and they also have no regard for billing effectively with insurance. We have been billed out of pocket for treatments (like fluoride) that would have been covered if they had been applied at our kid's annual cleaning. The doctor is very nice and professional with great regard for kids and rapport. But the rudeness of the front desk staff is just insane. I don't have time or energy for it. We are now trying to switch to another dentist for our kids that came highly recommended by friends and they are even making that process a nightmare, refusing to send the paperwork required to make the transfer. There are better experiences to be had with pediatric dentists - life's too short to deal with people like this. Until there is a better front desk team, unfortunately this dentist will continue to lose clients. read more

I brought my daughter here as her first dental experience & a few times after with pleasant results. It was excellent having such a kid-friendly environment that she could look forward to going to. She absolutely LOVED the play area, the TVs in the exam rooms, the dentist & hygienists, & the prizes afterward. My main qualm came with a tooth that was targeted as needing preemptive filling because it was prone to future cavity development. As far as I was told, it was not a current cavity in need of urgent filling, but I trusted the dentist's recommendation to correct it early just in case of future decay. The destist filled it (a molar), flossed it afterward & asked us to monitor it at home. The filling went flawlessly & it felt fine whenever I'd floss it at home as well (smooth to put in & take out the floss, not getting stuck). Upon our return soon after for a follow up visit, the dentist confirmed once again that it looked fine physically, but said that the x-ray seemed to tell a different story. She saw something that made her unsatisfied with the original filling; a void or something that made it seem like food could get caught in there or like the filling wasn't totally solid. She decided it was in our best interest that she re-do the filling during this appointment. Despite my hesitation to have her redo a procedure on my kiddo, I trusted her judgment. During the procedure, my daughter was far more tense than the with the previous visit. For starters, the needle bothered her unlike before. It seemed like something was wrong because of that but we proceeded. We waited a while for the dentist to return when the meds should've kicked in. The dentist then returned & began drilling. My daughter complained several times that she could feel pain. This grew more intense as the procedure continued; she began to cry & couldn't be still. I inserted myself as best as I could to calm her although I wanted to just stop the procedure right away. There was definitely tension in the room as the dentist hurried to finish & my daughter continued to cry & I nervously tried to support the best way I could. Once it was finished, the dentist asked me if anything else was going on in my daughter's life as if to insinuate that she wasn't crying about actual pain. This really disappointed me, as my daughter complained about that dental appointment for days after & insisted that it hurt her. There was little to no empathy for my daughter's actual experience; I mentioned my concern to several staff members & they all kept repeating the same thing in response: that the doctor gave her the medicine so my daughter couldn't have felt anything. I am skeptical, knowing that there are cases of people feeling pain during entire surgeries. While I trust that the dentist was doing her best by the book, I also trust my daughter & maintain that something clearly wasn't right. I question whether or not my daughter was a straightforward case... I don't think she was numbed entirely as she should've been. She may have been administered the proper dosage, but maybe her nerves are different or something. In any case, I hate that she had to endure pain for a procedure to be REdone. In the aftermath, floss gets stuck in that area now & I doubt it's much less prone to decay if we can't clean it properly. I'm hoping our next dentist doesn't tell us they have to go in & bother that tooth again now that it has actually become a problem area. This review is not meant to deter anyone's choice; everything was great for us up until this experience. My daughter may be a one-off case & if so that's ok. But it's a learning experience for us for sure. My hope is just to share my experience as I'd want a parent to be honest if something like this happened to their child. read more

I cannot recommend Tooth Buds and Dr. Spatz in particular enough. She is empathetic, thoughtful, wise, and so professional and she understands so well how to treat both parents and kids. Tooth Buds is responsive to any worry you might have about your child's teeth--simply text photos to their main line and they get back to you even on weekends and holidays--which to my mind is going above and beyond. I was nervous about my daughter going to the dentist for the first time especially since she's a spoiled rotten little girl. When you first walk in to tooth buds, it's like a nursery of some sorts, my daughter was instantly drawn to this place. It was a very nice and warming environment and the reception staff was awesome. They engage my daughter in play and gave her a book with a story of peppa the pig's pfirst visit to the dentist. When we got to the back, I could sense my daughter was becoming ambivalent. She also just came from her pediatrician and got a round of shots, so she was going through it that day. Ebony, the assistant was sweet and gentle. Even though my daughter did not let her examine her, she was very patient. Dr. Mital Spatz walked in and she looked identical to my daughter's pediatrician. She was awesome and suggested proper ways to care for my daughter's teeth and wean her off the bottle. She gently brushed and flossed her teeth, allowing her to take breaks and give mommy a hug, which was a huge plus for me. After she was done, they let my daughter pick out a toy and gave her a goodie bag. This place has my heart from the moment you walk in you're greeted with smiles. I brought my 4-year-old to this practice when he was too squirrely for our family dentist. I chose them because of the great reviews and opted not to return after the initial exam. This might be an okay place for some people, but in balance it was a no for me. The good: The facility is really made for kids with a nice play area including costumes and toys. The staff is good with kids and they have a neat x-ray machine that makes it easy to get pics of the child's mouth (I'm grateful for that--now I have x-rays to show the next dentist). The meh: I gave the practice my insurance information even before we arrived so they could check the benefits ahead of time, as is their normal process. We arrived on time, but there was still a TON of repetitive paperwork to do and then it was a while before we were called in. The tech was really good with kids, but my son was his squirmy four-year-old self. We waited a long time for another tech to come assist her. Once the other tech arrived, she left halfway through the x-ray process. My son had been in the exam room for about half an hour at that point and was wanting to make a run for it. I ended up wearing the lead suit and assisting with holding him still while he was x-rayed. The doctor seemed fine. By the time the exam was finished, we were so ready to be outta there. All inconvenient, but could be expected on a busy/weird day. As we're getting ready to go, the person behind the desk says, "You were told about our high deductible policy, right?" When I told her I was not, I could tell from the look on her face that an error had been made. Bottom-line, I unexpectedly had to pay the full price of the exam and x-rays that day. $260 seems a reasonable price for the cool x-rays and exam... it's just the lack of communication that bothered me, the springing this on me at the end of an uncomfortable ordeal. However, they explained that I would get a refund if the insurance company paid. This exam was in January. More than a month ago, I received the statement from the insurance company stating that they had paid part of the bill. Now I'm chasing down that refund as the practice says they haven't received the check yet. As of today it's been 5 days since they said they would email my son's dental records. I called again over an hour ago and was told they'd be sent. But no luck yet. Each of these "meh" things is kind of minor, but overall they add up to an unprofessional experience. I'm glad this has been such a good practice for others, though. read more

We had a great first visit here! My son is 20 months and has had all his teeth (minus the last molars) for what seems like forever and it was time to see the dentist. The office is lovely - great play area, big tv with movies (Moana the day we were there), video game consoles if that's your thing (we're 95% screen free with our kid so that wasn't really for us). Also a fun little nook with books, beanbag chair, lots of nice new toys. Our kiddo was very comfortable there while we waited for our appointment. Dr. Spatz came out and introduced herself to us, and to our son, and she was so pleasant and nice. The exam rooms are nice and new - screens on the ceiling to help distract the kids. Again our kid doesn't watch tv so it didn't help as much as I imagine it might help others, but it does make sense. All the techs were very patient and friendly. I took my one year old daughter in for her first dental appt, and was grateful to experience an office that was welcoming and efficient. For all of us down syndrome or congenital heart defect parents, the doctor came out to greet us themself, met our little one, and asked for any parameters/accommodations right off the bat which we all know makes such a positive difference. The staff and providers talked in depth about oral care specific to my daughter, and made sure I understood all I needed to do to maintain healthy practices. She went to several other dentists before her who could not get her to get her cavities filled and insisted she has to be sedated. Dr. Spatz and her team were SO great with my daughter, she got her cavities filled several months ago, came back for a cleaning, and just a couple of days ago pulled two of her baby teeth that were giving her trouble (my daughter had a LOT going on with her teeth, ha!). Took our little one for her first dental visit and it was a wonderful experience. All of the staff is kind and happy. They have a little play area for the kids and for the older ones, a tv that can show your child's favorite show. They show all the instruments to the child and how they work which is great. The exam was quick, easy and informative. They even have a little chalkboard sign that has your child's name and date, that says first dental visit for a great photo op. I'm so glad we found this place not only for the great experience, but they also take dental insurance which from my calls around to other dental offices, most don't. I can't speak to the quality of the dental work, as we were never able to get that far. What I can tell you, is that if you value a simple process, easy scheduling, a friendly reception staff with honesty and forthrightness, then I wouldn't recommend this company. My child needed fillings, and sees a different dentist. They referred us here, for the fillings only. The only appointments they had available were several months away, so I called my dentist to see if that would be ok. They called and were told my child could be seen much sooner. I called them back, they said no. I called my dentist. The 2 dentists are friends, and this dentist told mine that they could certainly see us sooner. They called back and fit us in sooner. Today we arrived at the appointment for the fillings, and they said no this is a consultation and we would have to come back for a 2nd appointment for the fillings. Two appointments were never discussed. They insisted over and over, to the point of rudeness, that because they always do it this way, I should have known. As this is a referral, where the information was sent over, and not a regular dental appointment where they then tell you to schedule for fillings, this is really illogical. I completely understand wanting to get up-to-date x-rays etc, but they wanted to do that and then have us go through the entire scheduling rigamarole again. If you value your time, do not bother with this company. read more

Dr. Mital is amazingly caring, kind and an expert at her job. My daughter had 2 deep cavities. We had to change 3 dentists before Dr. Mital because they could not perform without sedation or even worse, putting my child under. We had 2 very bad failed attempts. But Dr. Mital listened you our whole story and gained my trust with her compassion. She ended up doing the procedure with only laughing gas and my daughter didn't flinch! My 18 month old son fell and injured his tooth and mouth...my husband called to see if our son could be seen (his tooth was loose and he was bleeding from his gum and lip)...the office was closed! The receptionist told us to bring our son in anyway... Dr. Spatz and her staff were kind enough to stay after hours to see my son. We went back after one week and his tooth was pulled out. She also switched to the fluoride toothpaste given to her at the office--I'd been trying to switch her off her baby toothpaste for 3 years and at least 6 different types. I know some of this may just be timing, she might just have been the right age finally, but man was this a successful appointment. What an amazing visit!!! Dr. Spatz and her team made my daughter so comfortable. My six year old was born with Hypomineralized First molars which were extremely sensitive to cold and sweet. After seeing Dr. Spatz for a comprehensive exam we came up with a plan. As a Dentist myself, I knew that nitrous would be a must in my daughters treatment. We arrived to her second visit and Yuli took us to the room, she explained and showed my daughter everything. A cartoon was chosen on the TV which is mounted on the ceiling! The office is decorated beautifully and has all the bells and whistles from tv's on the ceiling for the patients and easy handheld X-ray machine that is quick and easy. My daughter didn't even complain about having to bite down on anything, etc. Of course, the visit ended with a "goodie bag" and a balloon that made it even more special! Best part was they are insurance friendly so they will bill the visit for me and only ask for payment if there is a balance after. Convenient street parking on Lincoln or Southport. This is a long overdue review, but I felt it was only right to add to the list wonderful experience with Dr. Spatz and her team. First, I have to say we were referred to Tooth Buds because my son has extensive work that needed to be treated by a pediatric dentist. When I called, Dr. Spatz picked up the phone- although the office was already closed. She warmly greeted me, took time to listen to my sons situation and reassured me that she could see our son later on in the week. That very first interaction led me to believe this was going to be more than an ok experience. I was not disappointed. My son was the second patient to see her.. we had to extract teeth and seal the other teeth- no small feat. We were so concerned that our child was not going to love the dentist after this but quite the contrary! He loved visiting Dr. Spatz each time. No fuss when we were in the car on the way to see her each time. The team was beyond friendly, courteous and professional. Dr.Spatz is the child whisperer!!! She is simply excellent at talking to children and truly makes a visit to the dentist easy and uses terms they can understand; for example, She calls cavities "sugar bugs". We use these terms at home now as well! She handles each patient with such care just as if they were her own kids. We fell in love with Tooth Budz- there will be no other place that we will take our child (of course until he grows out of pediatric services) because we've hit the jackpot with Dr. Spatz and her team. Like a lot of kids, our 5 year old typically doesn't do well with dentists, and I acknowledge that our boy is not the easiest child to work with. We had been previously been going to another nearby pediatric dentist. It seemed like with every visit, they were progressively less and less tolerant of his resistance to the point that nothing got accomplished at a visit, despite our getting charged in full for each appointment. It had gotten so counterproductive that we started going to Tooth Buds last fall, and it's been a completely different experience. Dr. Spatz and her staff have an incredible amount of patience and have been fantastic with him. We just went for our second semi-annual visit, and while our boy had his moments of resistance, it was nothing like how bad it's been with other visits, and he was able to get all his work done, including X-rays, without a tantrum. We want to thank Dr. Mital and team for an amazing job today to extract my son's tooth. My son is a special need child and coming into the appointment, we thought we had to do an oral sedation to extract the tooth out. To our surprise, Dr. Mital was able to successfully extract the tooth and put in the spacer with only using the laughing gas. Most importantly, my son had a very positive experience!!! Brought my 21mo old here for a routine check up and had a great experience. The lady at the front desk couldn't have been nicer and we were greeted with smiles. The office is clean and inviting, and my son loved playing with all the toys before our appointment. The dentist greeted us in the lobby and the hygienist was very kind. Both were wonderful with little children and did a great job trying to ease his fears. My only suggestion would be is that they could have been slightly more efficient and done everything together. My little guy had his teeth cleaned then we waited a little bit to see the dentist and she did the fluoride treatment so he had to lay down again, which was a little upsetting to him. Dr. Spatz was amazing with my 5 year old daughter. We have been trying to get her to get her cavity filled since July of 2019! 5th time is the charm, ha! We tried 3 times with a family friend who has his own practice, after which he recommended we see a pediatric dentist. First pediatric dentist went straight to sedation after they couldn't get my daughter to cooperate. Dr. Spatz and her team were so kind and patient with my daughter and I and thankfully my daughter finally got her cavity filled yesterday without having to be sedated!
