Yesterday, Sophia my little fur-baby had a vet appointment that was just a block away. Being a good dog dad, I made sure she arrived early. In fact, we were so early I had time to kill so I made a stop at, The Cup. To my delightful surprise, they had a special on two of my favorite flavors and they were combined into one cupcake. I love lemon & raspberry. The cupcake was called, Spring Fling. It was a lemon cake, with Raspberry cream cheese frosting and a raspberry filling. The cake was moist and soft. Most importantly, the frosting was not overly sweet and did not overly dominant the cake. It was just the perfect amount of topping. The lady working the counter was attentive and made friendly conversation. I was glad to see that they are part of the, Gift-A-Meal program and that they offered Student Discounts to those who attend SIUE. That's community supporting community.

When visiting Highland and Aviston, Illinois we passed by The Chocolate Affairs shop while leaving the 9th Street Cafe. We couldn't help ourselves from noticing the young owner Jen busy wheeling away carts of fresh chocolate-covered strawberries to the town's Art Festival. We went inside and were surrounding by tons of little knick-knacks, crafts, souvenirs, and of course, sweets! One of the four rooms is dedicated specifically as the "Candy Room." Caramel pecan patties, real butter creams, hand dipped caramels and chocolate potato chips, to name a few! I enjoyed the chocolate covered toffee with peanuts. Mmm mmm! They also rent out chocolate fountains for your next event. As for the bed and breakfast...It's a historic house built in 1914 by Dr. Tibbetts. The house accommodates guests with 3 bedrooms, each having its own private baths and theme (Angel, Quilt and Blue Rooms). Guests also have full use of a parlor, dining room, kitchen and deck. The best part is you can enjoy chocolate chip cookies and refreshments on arrival, chocolate gift baskets in the bedrooms and a sample from the chocolate case overnight! Continental Breakfast is the Chocolate Lovers Special featuring Triple Chocolate Mess Cake and Chocolate Covered Strawberries. What more could a chocolate lover dream of?!?! They shared that the location has been open for a month and that all of the baked goods were created by one of their husbands, who learned his craft from his two grandmothers who raised him. And he learned well! All of the samples the ladies shared were flat-out DELICIOUS and quickly led to a few unplanned purchases . We started with a slice of the moist apple cake, then we tried and ordered the strawberry cream bar (not 100% sure if that's the right name), followed quickly by the old fashioned donut bunt cake. All three were absolutely stellar! We topped it off with iced coffees which were much better than your usual corner cup of joe; fresh and smooth with no twinge of bitterness. Our only regret was not discovering this place sooner, as we found it on the last day of our trip from Seattle.
