We arrived at about 3pm on a Friday and the staff looked exhausted. One employee said that it had been busy since 6am. The employee was super nice. We bought a box of goodies. Kruta Bakery has been on my radar for a bit. I don't work more than fifteen minutes away. I saw on Facebook though that Kruta has onion rye bread on Fridays. I had to investigate. I was there right around 9am and I secured 2 loaves of the onion rye bread, several "fudgies," and a large iced butterfly cookie. I'm impressed! The fudgies were great! They were very moist and the icing is thick and rich. I was also happy with the iced cookie. The rye bread had a good flavor but I would have preferred a thicker, denser loaf, like the St. Louis bakeries used to sell. I like more caraway seeds and cornmeal on the outside for texture. I definitely enjoyed the onion flavor though. I will definitely return to Kruta! Need to sample more items! read more

Kruta is a local staple since 1919, I believe, and anyone who has lived here for more than 5 minutes knows about it, and for good reason. Kruta is the top tier when it comes to local bakeries. I've never had a single disappointing item here and I've tried many! We go almost every weekend. They do get busy so make sure you grab a number when you come in or you may end up getting served after those you came in before. Judy is awesome and helpful, but really so is everyone, and if you don't know what something is called just point and describe it as best you can and they will help you out! They are known for their famous butter cake, which is divine! Also top notch are their fudgies and we always get several. They have a two large containers of coffee, one regular and one decaf, and they also have milk, chocolate milk, and I believe bottled water and perhaps orange juice. I love their danishes as well. You can get fresh bread and they will slice it for you, if requested. They've also fairly recently expanded and now have more room inside, which is great when the line gets long, although the line usually moves pretty quickly. They also have a new patio that it was finally warm enough to try! Lastly, another thing I love about Kruta is they do not price gouge - we can get a whole box of assorted items a loaf of bread and a chocolate milk for around $20. read more

This bakery has been around for over 100 years for a reason. There are some cakes and pastries I have never tried. But the donuts, klachkies, and fudgies are the best! Best donuts I've ever eaten! The donuts are light and not too "bready". and the chocolate covered Bavarian Cream is amazing. The cream is not too sweet and there is a generous amount of cream in each donut. And their little chocolate mound cakes are a must try! This place is worth driving out of your way to get there! My husband has told me childhood stories about his mom and his grandma taking him to this bakery so often throughout his childhood. We visited them once when we were newly married (in the 90s), and all I remember is how rude the employees were. We then moved out of the area, but when we moved back, my husband started mentioning it again, so I figured if these memories are so dear to him, I should forget about the bad experience and go there with him again. Unfortunately, that would turn out to be a mistake. We visited recently on a weekday mid-morning. There was only one other customer in the store, and she was at the register with an employee. There were four employees. A young man finally came to the counter to "assist" us and made it quite clear that we were a bother and wished we'd just go away. I tried to ask a few questions about some of the baked goods and the young man spoke so quietly that I couldn't hear much of what he said, even after asking him to repeat himself. When he did provide an answer to a question, it still wasn't what I was asking. Again, it really felt like we personally ruined his day by coming in. My husband got a couple of donuts and a couple of cupcake/cookie things. Because they didn't have any of the variety of donuts that are to my liking, I decided to get a cream horn. I also decided to get a gooey butter cake for the family to share. I was hoping to find more of a variety since they are such a famous, and apparently popular, bakery in the area. I am not a picky person. I pretty much like everything, yet it was genuinely hard for me to decide on anything. It was like choosing the best of two evils, if that makes sense. Honestly, if their items for sale are the same every day, I don't know how they stay in business. To be perfectly honest, we were disappointed with nearly everything we bought. Not sure if people knew this but they originated in East St. Louis. They've only been at the C'ville location since 1974 and it looks like they have added an eating area since my last visit before the pandemic. I think it's a great move on their part. Usually I have nothing negative to say about bakeries because I still haven't found one I don't like. But Kruta does it all well. I have lived in the Collinsville area and have visited Kruta bakery quite a bit. When I first came to the area, the quality of the baked goods to me were better, however they do have a greater variety of baked goods now with the expansion of Kruta. For my first few years in the area, I ordered my birthday cakes form Kruta but one year I ordered one and it was dry and a little salty. Now I just stop by occasionally for a donut, a mini cake or cupcakes. They used to have a fantastic butter cake, a 1 layer cake that was not iced but was rich, moist and delicious. They are known for their stollens, donuts, cheesecakes and more, so it is definitely worth checking out, especially since they are now creating new baked goods and more seasonal specials. read more

I love the angel puffs donuts. They are fast even when they are busy at the shop. The bread they make has really good flavor.

We were driving through the St. Louis area and were going to stop at a couple BBQ places to have a vote on what we got and also decided to do the same with gooey cake at bakeries. We stopped at two bakeries and this was one of them. Overall, I thought the gooey cake was better here (rest of the group liked the other one better), but ultimately thought my recipe that I use at home was much better. This was pretty close to my recipe as far as the gooey part, but the crust part was a little dry and almost too thick. While good, I was not wowed by it. I also got a raisin cinnamon roll while I was there as it looked great! The icing and the soft roll were great, but it could have used a bit more cinnamon sugar swirl in the middle. As a child grandparents went to the original location in East St Louis and continued going when they moved to Collinsville. I am 44 yrs and and turn 45 this year and it has been a tradition to get a Keira Cake for your birthday and I have continued that tradition with my daughter who turned 11 yrs old this past year. I was so excited to get my mom a cake from here for her birthday. We walked in and got the Fiesta cake, the one we were hoping they still had. As we cut into it, the coconut fell off and it seemed really crumbly not to mention the red gel was so sticky it wouldn't cut & looked like I was pulling something nasty off of the cake. As my family ate it, I kept hearing comments. It's dry, has no taste, super sweet. I was super bummed because I remember the best white cake I've ever had coming from here. I believe almond flavoring in it. The cake was tasteless & really dry. The lemon & raspberry filling were almost nonexistent therefore adding nothing to the cake.
