Since then it has moved (to Arnold) and expanded to become the Chesapeake School of Esthetics. The program was excellent and in fact I moved from Minnesota to Maryland to get my makeup artist license from CSMA. At the time the school was a one woman operation, with Betty J Wilder acting as admissions office and instructor. According to the website there is now at least one other staff member onboard. I attended the 40 Hour Makeup Demonstrators Program. We met once or twice a week and the program was completed in about two months. We learned about color theory, face types, skin undertones, makeup applications, and good sanitation practices. I also took a one day followup seminar on photography makeup. Betty is an invaluable resource when it comes to knowing about people, trends, and companies in the beauty business. She is kind, friendly, approachable and absolutely hilarious!! She also introduced me to Paula Begoun's books and debunked many skincare myths (see my review of Paula's Choice skincare: http://www.yelp.com/biz/paulas-choice-renton-2#hrid:TB6hGsxic3s0_7YlZANAug/src:self). My class was maybe ten people at the most, which ensured every student got as much attention and information as they needed. Students ranged from people just interested in cosmetics to people already working as makeup artists. The final exam involved a written test and makeup application demonstration. Though the makeup artist license is not a full cosmetology or aesthetician license, I learned alot, it helped me get a job with two cosmetic lines, and I still get a discount at Sally's Beauty Supply! I highly recommend this program for someone solely interested in makeup, and not hair, nails, waxing, or skincare. Just be aware of the limitations of the license, as many salons will probably prefer someone with a full license. This program currently costs $980. I can't say much about the 600 Hour Skin Care and Makeup Artistry Program as Betty was just getting the esthetics program started when I was at CSMA. According to the website, the program runs for twenty weeks, enrollment is limited to eight students, and the course includes lecture/theory and hands on labs. Topics covered include: Facial and Body Treatments, Facial Massage, Skin Analysis, Hair Removal, Makeup Application, Skin Care Equipment , Color Analysis, and Retails Skills. The cost is $8,750. There are not many schools or programs like this in the country (believe me, I looked at almost all the possibilities) so if this is your specific area of interest, I highly recommend the Chesapeake School of Esthetics. When I was attending, Betty had a 100% pass rate for the state board testing, which is a statistic that shows how much she puts into her school. After I graduated, I passed my state boards and proceeded on to work in a spa for about 2 years. I arrived a bit early and the instructor was there and greeted me warmly. He took the time to have a consultation about my hair and the style I wanted. I was pleased with how my hair turned out, considering it was a student, she did a pretty good perm rod set. What was disappointing was that my hair service ended up costing almost double the price listed on the website. Pricing should be up to date on the website, or the price list should be posted so that patrons know what they can expect to pay. The price on the website was $38, but with the tip I ended up paying $63.

Of course I didn't find out until after my salon visit that she paid no where near my amount (she had a senior citizen discount but it still doesn't excuse the overcharge). I should have known something was up when the educator asked me to pay some of the amount in cash and not all on my card. This is giving me signs of scamming. I paid for a deep condition yet not a cap or hooded dryer was used in the process. Makes me wonder if they just used regular conditioner instead of a deep conditioner. It didn't even sit on my hair for a minute before it was rinsed out. My hair was extremely tangled and dry after the wash and conditioner to the point my scalp was hurting as the stylist was combing it. I have 4c hair so moisture is essential on natural hair (but hey, I'm not the expert). I use Aussie moisturize deep conditioner at home and I know how my hair should feel afterwards and how nice the comb should be able to glide through. Called and spoke with the educator after my visit (didn't get her name but sounds like same one that took my money) and questioned the difference in prices and the deep condition treatment. She states (with an extremely long pause to the point I thought that she hung up), "due to my hair density and length I was charged this amount" and "their conditioning products are so good that you don't need to sit under dryer." Of course I don't believe this (but won't argue with her). I was charged based on density and length before anyone touched my head? Additionally, my moms hair is longer than mine. I arrived there with a wash and go ponytail so my hair shrinks to my head that you can't even determine the length or density by looking at it. So this is bogus. I usually stand clear of salons because of my anxiety due to horrible experiences (in particular people not knowing how to care for natural hair) and this has added to it. I will just continue to do my own hair as I usually do for all this headache.

I showed up at my appointment time and I was told they had no record of my appointment. Apparently the day before they were having system and WiFi issues, so perhaps the woman at the front desk wrote down my info and didn't put it in. They rescheduled me for 3 hours after my initial appointment but then the manager of the beauty school called me to say I could come earlier so I was there 10 minutes after that. Also, besides the error with my appointment, the woman at the front desk was not super apologetic or welcoming at all. When I came back the second time, she did not say hi. I definitely think she could benefit from customer service training. The all over relaxer was $44, trim/haircut was $11 (comped for me because of the appointment error), deep conditioning was $7, and there was a $5 charge for the density of my hair and $5 charge for my hair length. Charging for density and length of hair is a little annoying but those are their policies. Kaci was so amazing I might just go to her next time and not the beauty school. She is the perfect example of the type of stlyist anyone would want to work with. Her energy is amazing and she is very talented. She took her time, was gentle, extremely communicative, and just an overall gem.

I called several times, but no one answered. Finally, someone picked up, and I told the receptionist I had booked a hair appointment for 3/12 at 5:30pm, which included my daughter. I also mentioned that I left a comment section requesting that we both get our hair done. The receptionist said okay and claimed she noted it for both of us on 3/12 at 5:30pm. On 3/12, my daughter and I arrived for services. The receptionist only recorded my daughter's appointment and I told her I was also getting my hair done. I explained I called to confirm and reminded her that my daughter is owed a trim from the last paid service. She looked confused, so I asked if she understood what I was saying and showed her proof from the previous receipt with the manager on duty's signature. About ten minutes later, I voiced my concern to the manager on duty. She said it was okay, and I could still get my hair done, then she went to the back. While waiting in the area, I talked with other clients in the waiting area. The manager came out and said she heard there was some controversy and that no one could request a student because this is a school and all students need to have a chance. She then asked to speak with me outside. First, she accused me of being irate with the receptionist-- which was untrue. If asking questions makes me irate, then I was. If she takes an innocent question as irritation, that's her issue, not mine, and I don't feel guilty. Second, she claimed I posted a bad review online, which was false. If I disliked the service, I wouldn't have returned. I then asked her to show me the negative review she says I wrote. She came back and said the student left but she saw the review herself, which is now gone. It was never there because I never wrote it, ma'am. If I did, then it's clear she can't handle criticism. Not everyone is a good stylist. If someone feels they didn't get good service, they have a right to write their truth, and the manager should accept it and move on. The third false claim was that I said I didn't want certain stylists to do my hair because they were playing with my hair and did a poor job. I told her that was another lady, not me, and I detailed these accusations-- three in total--and I am offended. She then tried to change the language and said she was just asking questions, but those were outright accusations without proof. Throughout the conversation, one of her focused on professionalism. But what professionalism did she display when she was constantly accusing me? The worst part is that she doesn't think she was wrong. To the manager, For the record, ma'am, I don't need any services from this school. There are other hair schools and salons nearby. I didn't do any of the things you allege I did. I am writing this review today because this experience was well deserved (no stars if I could). You are not a professional. The receptionist is upset because I told you what happened, and you and she fabricated stories--saying I was irate, that I posted a bad review, and that I said someone was playing in my hair and did a bad job. Girl, bye! There are better places out here with better customer service.

I happily came over and was greeted by a really kind lady at the front desk that I believe was one of the instructors. She asked what I was looking to get done, and had me sign in had me pay. She said because the hair was over shoulder length they charge a length fee of an additional $10. Which honestly, that is a very reasonable policy, and $21 is still cheaper than any hair salon ice been to. After a couple minutes handed me over to a student named Patricia. Patricia did a great job and was quick and skilled in her art. She offered a shampoo or for it to dry after as they spray it generously to cut, but I opted for neither as I was on my way home from work and planning to shower once I got home anyway. Definitely will be returning when I want something done with my hair as prices are reasonable, and the people seem friendly.
