So my appointment started off on the wrong foot. The day before my appointment, I called to schedule. They asked for my name and phone number and that was all. I showed up at my appointment time and I was told they had no record of my appointment. Apparently the day before they were having system and WiFi issues, so perhaps the woman at the front desk wrote down my info and didn't put it in. They rescheduled me for 3 hours after my initial appointment but then the manager of the beauty school called me to say I could come earlier so I was there 10 minutes after that. Also, besides the error with my appointment, the woman at the front desk was not super apologetic or welcoming at all. When I came back the second time, she did not say hi. I definitely think she could benefit from customer service training. The all over relaxer was $44, trim/haircut was $11 (comped for me because of the appointment error), deep conditioning was $7, and there was a $5 charge for the density of my hair and $5 charge for my hair length. Charging for density and length of hair is a little annoying but those are their policies. Kaci was so amazing I might just go to her next time and not the beauty school. She is the perfect example of the type of stlyist anyone would want to work with. Her energy is amazing and she is very talented. I went online to schedule appointments for my daughter and me: a silk press, deep conditioning, and lashes. When I received the confirmation, I noticed it was only for one person. I called several times, but no one answered. Finally, someone picked up, and I told the receptionist I had booked a hair appointment for 3/12 at 5:30pm, which included my daughter. I also mentioned that I left a comment section requesting that we both get our hair done. The receptionist said okay and claimed she noted it for both of us on 3/12 at 5:30pm. On 3/12, my daughter and I arrived for services. The receptionist only recorded my daughter's appointment and I told her I was also getting my hair done. I explained I called to confirm and reminded her that my daughter is owed a trim from the last paid service. She looked confused, so I asked if she understood what I was saying and showed her proof from the previous receipt with the manager on duty's signature. About ten minutes later, I voiced my concern to the manager on duty. She said it was okay, and I could still get my hair done, then she went to the back. While waiting in the area, I talked with other clients in the waiting area. The manager came out and said she heard there was some controversy and that no one could request a student because this is a school and all students need to have a chance. She then asked to speak with me outside. First, she accused me of being irate with the receptionist-- which was untrue. If asking questions makes me irate, then I was. If she takes an innocent question as irritation, that's her issue, not mine, and I don't feel guilty. Second, she claimed I posted a bad review online, which was false. If I disliked the service, I wouldn't have returned. I then asked her to show me the negative review she says I wrote. She came back and said the student left but she saw the review herself, which is now gone. It was never there because I never wrote it, ma'am. If I did, then it's clear she can't handle criticism. Not everyone is a good stylist. If someone feels they didn't get good service, they have a right to write their truth, and the manager should accept it and move on. The third false claim was that I said I didn't want certain stylists to do my hair because they were playing with my hair and did a poor job. I told her that was another lady, not me, and I detailed these accusations-- three in total--and I am offended. She then tried to change the language and said she was just asking questions, but those were outright accusations without proof. Throughout the conversation, one of her focused on professionalism. But what professionalism did she display when she was constantly accusing me? The worst part is that she doesn't think she was wrong. To the manager, For the record, ma'am, I don't need any services from this school. There are other hair schools and salons nearby. I didn't do any of the things you allege I did. I am writing this review today because this experience was well deserved (no stars if I could). You are not a professional. The receptionist is upset because I told you what happened, and you and she fabricated stories--saying I was irate, that I posted a bad review, and that I said someone was playing in my hair and did a bad job. Girl, bye! There are better places out here with better customer service. read more

On May 1, 2025, I went to the Aspen Beauty Academy in Laurel, MD for a 2:00 appointment to have my hair cut, colored, deep-conditioned, blow-dried and flat-ironed. Kimberly, the student assigned to me, had a pleasant but timid personality and was very soft-spoken. Based on my experience, she did not seem ready to be assigned to clients. She took an hour just applying the color, after which I obviously had to sit additional time for the color to take. The instructor, Ms LaChelle, instructed her to put tape strips around my edges "to keep the gray hair from popping through the color." Then, when Kimberly removed the strips and was ready to wash my hair, Ms LaChelle advised her that "color removes color," addressing all the color that had to be removed from my face. Once I was laid back in the chair at the sink, Ms LaChelle was one one side of me and Kimberly on the other. They were saturating my face with "color to remove all the color on my face." They roughly and continuously scrubbed my face in an effort to "remove the color with color." Even rubbing around my eyes. I asked, "Why is the color near my eyes?" Neither answered me. My drawn-on eyebrows were even partially rubbed off. After Kimberly applied the conditioner and applied a plastic cap while still at the sink, we returned to her chair. At that time, I looked in my mirror to see whether all the color was removed from my face. To my dismay, color was still there. I then took pictures of my face. Kimberly was ready to put me under the dryer when I told her I wanted to see Ms LaChelle again so I could show her the color that was still on my face. She had Kimberly apply color remover, but offered no apology or concern for what I was enduring. Kimberly did, however, apologize repeatedly as she continued to apply color remover to my face. After 15 minutes under the dryer, Kimberly rinsed the conditioner out of my hair and blow-dried it. At that time, I HAD BEEN THERE 3 HOURS!! Kimberly then advised me that she would not be cutting or flat-ironing my hair. I think her shift was over. It was then 5:00. At that point, she introduced me to Dennika who would be taking over for the evening shift. Instructor Ms Nikita was at Dennika's side, constantly guiding her on the haircut. Soon, it was perfect. After Dennika finished cutting my hair, she repeatedly rubbed/removed left-over color from my neck and from behind my ears. Kimberly's gentle shampooing did not remove all the color. There was color still on my scalp, and along the front, sides, and back of my hairline. Dennika did an excellent job flat-ironing my hair. I was very satisfied. The cut and flat iron added an additional, but normal/expected, one hour. Finally, I was finished at 5:50, a total of 4 hours later. After I returned home, I constantly had to scratch my head and had color under my nails. The scalp itching was annoying and excessive, especially after going to bed and having my sleep interrupted. Perhaps the color was not thoroughly washed out due to Kimberly's inadequate, extremely gentle, non-scrubbing washing, using ICE COLD WATER. Finally, as I sat in Kimberly's chair, I had to endure about six students who were gathered a few stations from me, being very loud as they talked and laughed like school girls. This loud, unprofessional, inconsiderate and annoying behavior went on for hours. I imagine other clients were also annoyed. WHO'S MINDING THE STORE HERE!! read more

I've been here twice for hair service and both times it's been a WONDERFUL experience with super reasonable prices. The first time I got my hair washed, conditioned, and a twisted style for $33. Second tome a detangle, wash, and condition for $23. Student Aniyah did my hair both tones. She's good with styling my hair type 4C (kinky coiled curls). I observed many of the other students doing a nice job on other customers as well. Like that this school has a diverse population of students. Many of them has natural hair too. I highly recommend this school for simple hair care services as they are students and still learning. Also, probably best to go with a basic style idea to show them. read more

Don't come here if you're a man. I noticed the signs that I probably shouldn't have got a cut and I ignored them. I asked for a low skin taper , and to leave some weight on the back/sides because I wanted to grow my hair out. The woman who cut my hair said nah, we're gonna do a 1 at the bottom and a 2 on the rest of my head with no fading. It wasn't to skin. The main reason I went in was to clean up my neck hair, and it's still there. Also, the left side of my "bangs" is longer than the rest of it. The people were polite though. I was a regular customer for many years. I was mostly happy. I stopped going because they started over charging me. I have thinning hair that just touched my shoulders. They charged me extra for density and length (a new thing). I think charging more for density is racist. My hair is thinning. I guess all black women pay more. We cannot choose how we are born. There is so much pressure to get deep conditioning and hair trimmed. The last time I went, I was charged about $55 for a touch up and blow dry and I left with a frizzy head.The student pulled my hair back in my hair band. I was very disappointed. Extremely unprofessional!! The owner was very rude. It is pre-pay. So you pay for your service prior to services being rendered. I paid for a flatiron and a hair cut. After seeing one of the students slaughter a customer's hair I was very worried. The person doing my hair began to cut my hair BEFORE it was flat ironed. Maybe this is ok. But it is not the best way esp with black hair. So I asked her to stop. The owner didn't want to give me my $10 back. They made me fill out a form and then argued with me... the stylist took 2 snips and said "she already started the hair cut" The owner then said "well, looks like I don't have to give you your money back" I informed the owner that I would not argue over $10 but would def not be coming back and would YELP the heck out of this place LMFAOOOOO (and I held to my statement). She informed me that she does not pay any attention to yelp reviews because "ONLY the dissatisfied customers rate" Interesting enough, a new positive review pops up... this person has no friends and only one review... The students are always engaging. the reason I started there was because my hair was fried a poor perm service several years ago, The instructor and a student helped me with the problem. Also, I was very impressed that the salon was able to accommodate me when I called for a same day appointment. This salon has affordable prices which cannot be price matched anywhere! This will be my first review. I came to get my hair done this morning. I was 30 minutes early so asked if I could come in and sit down until my appointment. My appointment was at 10 am and they open at 10 am. Anyway there was no one in the salon other then the workers and everyone there had their mask on so I could not see any problems; however I was told no we do not open until 10am. After having my teenage daughter and I waiting for 2 hours AFTER the color consultation, the floor manager comes to tell us that they can't do her hair today because the treatment is a 3hr job and they close in 2hrs. My mother took my 9 year old daughter for what I thought was a straight forward wash and blow dry with a deep condition, however, when I got there to pick them up her hair was still not finished. The sections they supposedly finished looked a hot mess!! My daughter had been there about 3 hours for a wash and blow dry and her hair still was not finished. I thought I couldn't go wrong with getting her a wash and blow dry, they charged me extra for her length and the density but didn't know what to do with it!!! By time I got to my daughter it was a 3rd person attempting to blow dry her hair, it was taking so long my daughter's hair was dry and they were not spraying it to re-wet it. She was murdering my daughter's hair with a round brush that she didn't seem to know how to use, she was trying to comb through my daughter's hair with a rat tail comb. Today I decided to visit this beauty academy after researching the reviews. When I arrived I was greeted by the receptionist who was very pleasant. After a short wait Aisha my nail tech came out and greeted me and took me in the back to be serviced. She was very pleasant and took her time with my nails! We talked and we laughed. I had been in desperate need of a haircut but have been trying to budget, so haircuts slipped to the wayside. My neighbor told me about this place, but I was a little apprehensive because I had really really long hair and can be particular about my hair. I decided that I'd had enough and I needed something, so I took the chance. I honestly could not be happier with my cut, my hair looks fantastic. Just be advised that they are students, so the process can be lengthy since the instructor comes and checks after each step to make sure everything is going well. If I could do zero stars I would. I had a relaxer put in my hair and the girl burned my scalp so badly, I can't even explain! Then, the "supervisor" poured Sea Breeze on my burning scalp which was supposed to make it better! Just imagine how Sea Breeze feels on a scalp that's been burned!!! Then, two of the trainees were extremely nasty to me when I said I wanted someone else to finish my hair...they burned the h*** out of me and then THEY were nasty!! The owner had the girls leave the salon and said they would credit my money, which they never did! You know you went to the right place when you leave feeling better than you did when you came! I had a basic facial done at Aspen for the first time. The thoroughness and attention to detail was excellent! William took his time and made sure I wore the face mask for the amount of time needed to get the best results (not rushed off my face before it had time to dry completely). His massage and percussion skills were second to none, and might I add the exchange of words was quite refreshing and uplifting. I can always tell when someone takes pride in and enjoys their work, and William does. Keep training great students Aspen! I would no recommend for women with long hair,my first experience was bad, they give a good wash depends on the stylest, then they comb ur wet with no type of spray to detangle it which pulls ur hair out. Then they use muse to set your hair, but they use to much Muse so when you go home to restyle you are coming your hair out. They need to learn how to handle all lengths of hair and no Muse in the hair just setting lotions. I will continue to go to the Dominicans and pay price. read more

I was surprisingly pleased by Aspen Beauty Academy. I am always a bit leery when having my hair trimmed, however I had no need to worry. I was seen by Gloria, and she listened to me and did exactly what I asked her to do. Gloria did an exceptional job on the trim, as well as my wash, deep condition, blow dry, and flat iron. I was absolutely delighted with the out come; all together a great style. Gloria, is extremely talented and will go far in reaching her career goals. The prices were fair and instructors walked the floor and thoughtfully advised the entire time I was there. If you are looking to give yourself a small treat, consider a visit to Aspen. The only reason I did not give it five stars was the wait time, and general wear and tear of the clinical area.
