There were plenty of free on-street parking when we went. Since moving to the town of Canton, I have been meaning to make a trip. This past Sunday on Labor Day weekend, I finally made it. There was live music. The market was full of people shopping and vendors. There were produce, British baked goods, mushroom coffee and jerky, maple syrup, books, art, soap, shirts, jewelry, etc. There were plenty of vendors selling all their goodies. We visited each stand and enjoyed shopping and window shopping. We purchased cookies from Calos cookies, scones from the British stand, and maple lollipops from another stand. The Cow's Coop brought a baby cow (calf); it was so cute. After, we went to get coffee at LaSalle's and walked around the town. The weather was perfect, the vendors were friendly, I look forward to going back and supporting more small businesses.

There is just something about Collinsville that resonates with me -it has a laid back Bohemian Hippie Vibe that is hard to put into words. Maybe its the dozens of happy pooches that wander around. Maybe its the ultra friendly vendors. Maybe its the drop dead gorgeous scenery as you look over the Crown and Hammer. Maybe it's all the bicyclists and joggers that are everywhere. Maybe its all that granola and nuts and seeds and tie dye. It's like hard to explain, man..... We bought some corn, and a pizza and biscottis from Collinsville bakery. There are quite a bit of vendors here, most definitely more than when we started patronizing the Market a few years ago. Beautiful fresh produce is available from dozens of stands, plus meats, baked goods, herbs, eggs, you name it. It's a wonderful way to spend a few hours on a Sunday Summer afternoon.

Every corner has something different, which makes browsing feel like a treasure hunt. It's all quality items at great prices! One thing I really loved is how relaxed the shopping experience is. There are so many vendors to explore, but you never feel pressured or watched while you browse. You can take your time, enjoy looking around, and then check out in one central area, which makes the entire experience stress free and enjoyable. One of my favorite touches is the bar area, where you can grab everything from cocktails to coffee and even hot chocolate. It adds such a cozy, social vibe to the space and makes it easy to relax and enjoy your time while shopping. Cloud 9 Cookies absolutely deserves a special shoutout because they are unreal. Hands down some of the best cookies I have ever had. They are opening a full bakery downstairs soon, and that alone is reason enough to come back. If the cookies are any indication, it is going to be amazing. Well, there's a spanking brand new one in Torrington, and we visited them on their Grand Opening yesterday. The joint was jumping with two food trucks, 150 smiling vendors, raffle contests, and a parking lot that resembled Rentschler Field on game day. As their website states, "Market Street Creatives is a small business community where business owners can help one another, share ideas, and develop relationships that support the community". Simply put, the space is beautiful, I mean really gorgeous. And the vendors pretty much represent every home entrepreneur out there- from art, children's clothing and accessories, books, kitchenware, jewelry, food, candles, collectibles, sewing and embroidery, food, furniture, gifts, greeting cards, health and beauty aids, home décor, leather, linen, towels, office stuff, pottery, stained glass and dozens more. The Market is inside a huge multi-story brick building with art galleries on the walls between building sections. That brick building has a glorious history going back to the 1840's where companies under a series of names manufactured upholstery hardware, hooks and eyes, pins, nails, chains, handles, and even automated posting machines. In the early 2000's, the largest producer of weldless chain products in North America was right there in Torrington. That tenant (Perfection Chain) skedaddled to Alabama in 2013, when the building lay dormant until its 2025 resurrection as Market Street Creatives.

The folks who work there are SO nice and helpful and friendly and kind. There are kiddos and farm pups running around, kind signs offering water for those who need it (in stark contrast to a certain corporate orchard we despise, which does not provide drinking water to patrons and does not allow patrons to bring water in, even for dogs). Averill is the kind of simply humane, thoughtful place that brings joy to my heart. - The farm is beautiful. So beautiful. On a coolish autumn morning, it's uncrowded and you can gaze out into the distance to see tractors mowing in distant fields, outlined against a periwinkle sky, rows and rows of neat trees, all impeccably well kept. Adjacent to the farm market, there's a big, wide field with a generous number of picnic tables placed all around, far enough from one another that you can pretend like you have the field all to yourself. - Farm produce and products are pure goodness. Apples and pears are magnificent, of course: juicy, healthy, not doused with pesticides. Cider donuts are freshly fried, well blotted, and not overly sweet. An apple crumb pie, redolent with butter and still warm at purchase, was world class, not overly sweet. Pear and apple cider are the embodiment of clean, adulterated fruit flavor. It's food I feel good about feeding to my kiddos. - The bathroom is a port-a-potty situation, but the one I used was pretty clean. There are four behind the farm store. - Pricing is fair. - Fellow patrons are civilized and respectful, which makes me so happy. Policies are generous, rules are reasonable -- and as a result, patrons don't feel like they have to claw back something from the business to even out the playing field. At some large, commercial places, you see some patrons pull apple after apple off of trees, take one bite, and then throw them down into the grass to rot (so they feel like their insanely high cost of entry is justified, I speculate). Averill owners and Averill patrons are respectful of one another, making for a truly pleasant visit. If you enjoy a bucolic, relaxing and beautiful apple picking (without the gaudy carnivalesque elements offered by some larger establishments), Averill Farm is an absolute must.

Lots of great looking tempting treats there! We picked up a two portion container of vegetarian quiche with onions, peppers, spinach and Swiss. It was nearly a pound in weight and each portion made for a very delicious and satisfying dinner. We wanted to pick up something for dessert and settled on a Dirt Bomb. What on earth is that? Well, its an "old-fashioned donut, baked instead of fried. Then rolled in butter and cinnamon sugar." Yes, it was delicious without a hint of grease. They had lots of tomato plants, peppers, cabbage, cukes and lettuce all reasonably priced. We passed on the budding flowers -- just too soon in the season, we think. But they had a lot of choices, so we'll be back in mid-May. We also like their indoor store; they have some fresh-grown tomatoes that are tasty and sell some very good locally grown canned and bottled products (try their apple sauce - really yummy).
