I've been a patient of Dr. Trusty for about 20 years, and I would never go anywhere else or trust another with my eye health. He is one of the most personable and kindest humans I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, and I admire how he takes the time to do a "life check" and make sure I'm doing well each time I'm there. He cares immensely about his patients and everyone on staff is so friendly and sweet. Even though I now live in California, I always return to see Dr. Trusty for my annual appointment! Twice I called and asked that they contact my insurance company and request them to authorize acceptance of a medication not presently covered under my plan. They have done this for me in the past but now they will not even respond to my request. They obviously will not go out of their way to help me. read more

Having worked in Optometry fir 20 years in California, I was very happy with my experience with Dr Trusty and his staff. My husband is extremely happy that they got his RX correct on the first try. The only negative is the office I came from in California had over 2000 frames to choose from here (not just this office but others I've been too here), what you see is what you get. I have be a client for several years now, I got new glasses last year and tried to get used to them. When I went back I was told they were right. I had to pay another 400+ dollars to get new lenses. Granted I had tried for months to get use to them. I feel like I should have at least be given a discount for the the error they made. I really hate leaving them a bad review, but the practice has changed so much since being sold. Dr. Trusty no longer owns the practice and they have lost that personal feeling. read more

The people at the office are friendly and my experience during my exam and while picking out frames was good. However, the customer service after the fact has not been great. When I tried to contact the office by phone no one answered, it went to voicemail every time. i had my pupils dilated for the exam and when my vision was still obscured 24 hours later I called, went to voicemail, and didn't receive a call back until the next day. the message I received on my call back was asking when I would like to schedule an exam making it clear that no one had listened to my original message. Also, I know things move slow these days but expect at least 14 days to get your glasses. To be fair they told me 10-14 days however i was told 14 days at the latest. We've passed that and I've yet to receive a call. Overall I wouldn't recommend this office and I won't be using them again. read more

Upon planning a visit with the receptionist she inquired as to what was going on, Then consulted with the doctor, and then called me back and told me that I should maybe see an ENT and save me a visit! Made an appointment with Dr. Coleman. First experience was great from the moment I walked in the door. The girl who performed my diagnostic tests was nice and friendly. Dr. Coleman examined my eyes and sent me home with a trial pair of contacts. Went back for a follow-up a week later (didn't have to pay extra, included with contact exam) and told him the trial contacts bothered my eyes. He sent me home with another trial and told me what to take to keep my eyes from feeling so dry. I also showed him a box that my old contacts came in and he went out of his way to write down information for them in case I didn't like the 2nd trials and wanted to go back to my old brand. Great office and everyone I encountered was very friendly. read more

I cancelled my appointment before I even went in. They couldn't get it right with my insurance, and wanted me to pay out of pocket because my deductible wasn't met. However, my deductible is medical only and nothing to do with my vision. After playing that game with them for several hours, I cancelled and decided to find an office that knew what they were doing. This is my first time using this place for services. I came in with a scheduled appointment and waited about 30 minutes before being seen. I don't know if they are over scheduling many clients. The front desk could be more welcoming. They just seem to want to grab your insurance and then to go wait you go. I checked in with them and let them know I had work after so needed my appointment to be efficient. It was not. I ended up having to come back to finish my exam. Also there glasses should have all price points. I just wanted something basic covered under my insurance. They had no pairs for a basic frame. That's disappointing. I don't need a designer frame. So in sum, the overall experience was very impersonal in comparison to other places I've been. I will say Dr. Shinpaugh was fantastic with my exam when I finally got back there. read more

When I visited Dr. Coleman for an eye exam, it had been over 10 years since I'd last been to an eye doctor so I wasn't sure what to expect--especially since I have one pretty weak eye but have been able to enjoy not wearing contacts or glasses. To start, the staff was incredibly friendly which I take as a good sign -- I think a happy staff is a reflection of their trust and respect for the doctors. Like any doctor's office, I waited a few minutes before seeing the doctor, which I totally understand because Dr. Coleman was a wealth of information and patiently spent time explaining everything to me. He did not once seem rushed or irritated by all my questions or reluctance to wear glasses/contacts (I learned about my astigmatism...). Insurance these days can be complicated and he took his time to explain all of that to me too. I've gotten in the habit of asking costs of every single thing at doctors offices, so there was nothing I felt surprised or overcharged by. I have since then recommended multiple friends to drive out of their way to visit Total Eyecare and all of them have come back with great reviews---some have even come back with true relief stories after going to Dr. Coleman for a second opinion! read more

Very dissatisfied with this place. Apparently I had been there years earlier and there must been a reason why I didn't go back. I went this year to get my eyes checked and the prescription is clearly wrong. They overcharged me for my co-pay. They try to overcharge me for a pair of readers, so I went somewhere else to have the prescription filled. Like I said the prescription was wrong so I took them back to their office so they could recheck it, of course they blamed the place that made the glasses. So I took the glasses back to the place that made them and they re-checked it against the prescription, And they were made to the prescription specifications. Now I have to pay out-of-pocket for a new Eye exam somewhere else. Not happy at all and will definitely not make the mistake of going back again. read more

This place has not gone downhill, it's fallen off a cliff. If you call the number listed they ask you to leave a message and they will call you back to set an appointment. What kind of customer service is that? When a place is to busy to serve you when it is convenient for the customer, then call when it's convenient for them, it's time to find a new place. I stupidly went ahead and left a message. They called and I asked the cost of the services and they couldn't tell me the cost even though I was ready with all my insurance information. They made the appointment and told me a person would call me with the costs the day before my appointment. No call. I called the day of the appointment to inquire about the cost, no answer. Called again before the appointment to cancel, no answer. I will not be doing business with these people. I don't think it is unreasonable to know the cost of services before coming in to get the services. I also called two other places and over the phone in less than five minutes I got quotes for the cost of the services I needed. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Trusty for 10 years now, and have never had a poor experience until today. An office staff person contacted me to reschedule my appointment due to a family emergency - completely understandable! She told me they could get me in the same day with a different doctor, which was absolutely fine with me. Well, it turns out there wasn't any availability, which was disappointing as I had scheduled my work day around this appointment weeks in advance. When I mentioned the situation was frustrating, the woman on the phone cut me off and began yelling over me. I have never experienced such poor professionalism, and have already secured an appointment for the same time at a different practice in town. I adored Dr. Trusty's care over the years, but due to his staff's lack of compassion and professionalism, I will never be returning and am reaching out to the dozens of folks I have referred to Total Eye care the last decade to suggest that they too find another provider. read more

Loved the doctors and everyone there was very nice to me during me appt. At the END of the appt as I was putting in a trial pair of contacts they told me I owed $116 and that they were going to order my contacts. I go back a month later to pick up my contacts and I was told they never ordered them because I needed to pay $120 for them before they could ever order them. They said the $116 was for the appt only and no contacts. I asked why they never told me that and they acted like "oh it's just money". I'm a 23 year old broke college student. If they would've told me this at the beginning I never would've stayed there. *I have great eye insurance and have NEVER paid that much for an eye appt of contacts. (I just moved to Denton and when I was looking for an eye dr this one had decent reviews so I gave it a shot) If you don't have a lot of money and don't mind paying that much for an appt and contacts I would beg you to go somewhere else. Office staff is horrible, this was my second visit here, both times I have paid far too much out of pocket only to find out after the fact I was covered, the staff apparently doesn't like to verify insurance instead just wants to stick you with the bill at the end and not tell you what ANYTHING costs till it is over.... April in the contact lens fitting area was a completely useless, she gave me the wrong prescription I found this out after damaging a bunch of merchandise at work because I could not focus and my depth perception was off (I drive a forklift, and i could have hurt someone because of this or myself) but they did not seem to think this was a big deal when i called back to complain. When I went to pay my bill I was told my vision insurance would not cover anything because I no longer had it, so my medical would only cover my glasses exam (something I was not told until after the fact) BUT I DO HAVE INSURANCE they just did not check or run it. After calling back and speakign with the office manager she confirmed my prescription was wrong I was given and they did not bill me correctly (twice now, once two years ago) she also tells me that April ordered the WRONG contacts for me (how dumb can you be seriously) Aside from the fact she treated me like total crap while I was there being fitting and tried to ignore me as much as possible. Needless to say I got refunded back the difference I should not have paid out of pocket. The other thing that goes to show you how much they don't care about the service they offer is.....After calling back with contact problems where I found out they gave me the wrong ones, the office manager told me to call back on Monday to see if mine had come in, the girl that answered the phone actually says to me "Well did you get a text message from us saying they were in?" I said no I did not that i was asked to call back by your office manager, at this point she told me "Well we are too busy right now to look for them, we had come boxes come in but we can't get to that right now due to helping other people, so we will call you when they come in" Again SERVICE IS complete crap here, this place might be nice and have all the newer good tech, but none of that means anything when your treated like dirt, and no one tells you up from down on whats going on with your own eyes. I will NEVER return here and I would never recommend anyone go here, if you choose to, make sure you bring proof of your insurance coverage with you or your going to be paying a ton out of pocket because the office staff does not like to check and verify insurance, since that might take away 30seconds from them filing their nails like what happened with April her nails were more important then the paying patient in front of her.. Also make sure your prescription is the same thing the doctor wrote or you might break something or hurt someone like I did because you could not see clearly. read more

I'm going to have to echo the complaints here of poor service and overcharging as well as missed deadlines. My glasses were also late and they mixed the prescription, I was ordering one for driving and one for reading. One my second visit the reading pair was blurry. After going back for a third time after a recut, the man "helping" me tried to claim he had done everything he could and I needed to go all the way through and get a new prescription. I called in and asked to see someone else than the person who'd already screwed up twice. She was able to get the previous glasses to work by adjusting the frame. However, by the sound of it they crafted them by having the focal point in the wrong spot, so they almost have to sit on my eyebrows in order to work. Several months later, the edges of the frames chip. They often fall out. I never had this much trouble with cheap lenscrafter frames. Save yourself the hassle and don't use this place. It's pretty and just hype. Nothing more. read more

First, I'm not the type of person who gives negative reviews to businesses, in fact this is the first one I have ever given out period, and I'm over 50 years old. My wife and kids used to go to this Optometrist (never again) and luckily their eyes were fine, needed no corrective lenses etc and so they escaped unscathed. I needed a new script in order to get new contacts, so I went here instead of my regular guy, simply because the rest of my family did already, I like to keep things simple. Went and saw Dr Coleman, got a new prescription and my eyes had changed a little and I had been rocking the same power lenses for over 5 years - I wasn't surprised as its to be expected at my age. Got told my new trial lenses would be there in 1 to 2 weeks, I thought this odd as I've worn contacts for over 10 years without any trouble,problems,issues etc in the past, and ALWAYS had walked out wearing my new pair with my new prescription. I was cool though, this was a new Optician and I thought it's just their way. They gave me a temporary pair which weren't my correct prescription but close enough to get me by until my new ones came. From that point on everything went horribly wrong. I got a call at work (I work in downtown Dallas) and was told my new lenses had arrived and were ready to be picked up. I actually left work early to get there before they closed as my "near enough" contacts were OK, but just, and I was ready to see 20 20 again. Imagine my chagrin after an hour fighting I35 traffic to be told they WERE there, but as this was a fitting, I couldn't have them without Dr Coleman checking them out, and I'd have to make another appointment to see him and pick up my new lenses. Another weeks wait. I asked why couldn't they have told me this and made the appointment when they called me to say my contacts were ready to pick up? I got a shrug. Another week passed, arrived on time for my fitting. Imagine my horror when I couldn't even see the big E at the top of the eye chart with the new lenses. They were so bad, I asked if I'd actually got the correct lenses and hadn't been given someone else's by mistake? I wasn't being a smart ass but these weren't even in the same zip-code as my eyes needed. Don't worry they said, sometimes people don't see the same way out of different manufacturers lenses and they were ready for that and had 2 manufacturers lenses to try. I put the second pair in, very slightly better but still horrible. They would order more lenses, I should go home with those and try them. But yes you guessed it, another 2 weeks wait for the next trial pair to arrive. I drove home in the lenses, and it was an experience to say the least, at home i discovered I couldn't see to read on my laptop either. I hoped my eyes were tired, and they would be better in the morning. They had at one point put their fingers on my eyes and turned the contacts several times trying to get them "Correctly oriented" to help me see better. I'm an optimistic person by nature but even I was having grave doubts at this point, I drove to work in the morning and as soon as I was in my office, pulled out the contacts and replaced them with my "near enough" pair which I'd fortunately kept just in case. I couldn't function in the new lenses and on top of that it was dangerous for me to drive in them, especially in the dark. Two weeks later new pair arrive, tested, couldn't see squat. He even told me to try taking the right one out and trying just one lense... I'm like wtf?? Went home, dutifully tried the one lens is enough method, apparently just enough to not use a laptop and not drive safely. Again went back to the trusted "Near enough" pair, but at this time I'd actually had enough. I called the following day, left a voicemail saying I hadn't been able to see adequately in 6 weeks now and I was done trying. Explained I didn't want the prescription because it didn't work and was useless, I just wanted my money back at this point, and how could we go about this? They called back 2 hours later when I was in a meeting, I missed the call but the voicemail said happily that my prescription was at the front desk ready for me to pick up.... Called again the following day and kept calling till I got a human being on the other end, explained politely I didn't want the prescription for lenses which I couldn't see out of, just wanted my money back...... Long silence.... someone else would call me right back and talk to me, what was my number again???? And here I am, 4 days later, still waiting lol. Fortunately I wasn't holding my breath waiting for them to the return call as I'd have been long dead by now. I'm still rocking my "Near enough" contacts as it's all I have, resigned to going back to my original Optician (Omg do I want a do over on trying this bunch) and also resigned to being out $200 having to pay the full amount as I'd already wasted my insurance money/co-pay on this bunch. Older and wiser, read this and just be forewarned.. read more

I recently visited Total Eyecare for an eye exam by Dr. Shinpaugh. The staff at the reception area were friendly and didn't greet me through a glass window. Dr. Shinpaugh explained everything to me and seemed to be interested in me and any concerns I voiced while he was examining my eyes. It was refreshing to have a doctor actually talk "to me" and not "at me." I will definitely continue to receive my eye care from Dr. Shinpaugh. read more

If you shop for eye wear like you shop used cars, this is your place. Bait and switch, hard up selling and misquoting of insurance benefits. I had to show them a copy of my benefits and the response was, "I'll have to talk to my manager". And rude to boot. While showing frames they disappear only to reappear with another customer, and say "Someone will help you soon". I'd go blind before I shop here again. read more

A little tricky to find if you aren't used to the area, but they took my insurance and they provide IMPECABLE service! Seriously the best eye exam I've ever had. The waiting room is really nice, not a traditional design aesthetic, but completely fabulous. The girl who took all of my information before I saw Dr. Coleman was very thourghough and sweet to boot. They use technology! Didn't have to dialate my eyes, they used a machine and took pictures of my eyes that Dr coleman then sat down and explained what we were looking at! There's no guesswork in eyecare anymore :D Beautiful murals in the patient rooms as well! I may be moving into Dallas proper shortly, but I will come all the way back to Denton for this excellent eyecare! read more

I was in the office a while back and Dr Shinpaugh was very good. April at front counter seemed to be annoyed with something and took it out on me, she gave me very short non helpful answers to my questions and her non existent customer service does not come with a smile. The white haired crabby old lady was terrible and treated me totally different once I said I was going to look around because I didn't like their frames which are way overpriced. The lenses are way high too. I felt like I was buying a car with the high pressure sales and "if I buy today" sales pitch. I was given a handwritten post it note with jumbled prices which made no sense. I was quoted one price and at checkout there were add on costs. The crabby old lady refused to let me see the sheet with my insurance discounts and told me that I would have to get my own. I was refused a copy of my contact lens prescription so I left and I'm driving to Costco for another eye exam and I'll buy there because it is better service and much less expensive. read more
