Top notch dentists - so why the low score? I would give 0 stars if it were possible all due to my ongoing saga with the billing department. NEVER give them a credit card number. They charge your account without ever notifying you. I have not gone to the dentist in over a year because I'm so fed up with their asinine business practices. They charged me $600 on January 1st for their optional "extra" dental plan. I called them to resolve the issue and was told that yes, I'm considered an "inactive" client - so why charge me $600 no one can answer that question and its been a week and still no refund. So AI just left me a message saying that 3-4 doctors think I suddenly need a root canal? My appointment was over 2 months ago and the dentist could not determine which tooth was giving me problems...that's not her fault...it really is a mystery tooth. But then today I got this strange text saying I should come in for a root canal. How did we go from, "Not sure which tooth is the problem" to, "all these dentists think you need to see us for your root canal." Then I received a follow up call...an insane amount of background noise (mind you I have a migraine so it bothered me) and that human (so not another AI person) told me that the problem tooth is #3 and needs a root canal. It didn't seem like the human or AI were listening to what I was saying which left me with the impression that it's Christmas and they're hoping to get money from me. I stupidly signed up for a three year commitment from them and now I worry that they're just looking for reasons to find something wrong in my teeth to charge me. Many years ago I went to a dentist who said he found 10 cavities. That seemed suspicious so I got a second opinion and that dentist said I had zero cavities...this fiasco reminded me of that. I hope I'm wrong because in person this dentist seemed nice as did the XRay fella. read more

I'm not usually one to write negative reviews (live and let live, you know?) but the more I talk to others who went to Total Health Dental, the more I feel compelled to warn others to steer clear. It's not that the team is bad -- I had some positive experiences with the staff -- it's that I found the company downright predatory when it came to recommending dental plans. I was regularly encouraged to quickly sign off and put down deposits on dental plans that were more aggressive than what was needed (as later confirmed by second opinions), had to repeatedly contact their finance team to be refunded after learning from my insurance provider that the actual procedure was less expensive than what was originally billed (e.g. my wisdom tooth extraction was originally coded as an extraction of an impacted, unerupted tooth, despite the fact that the tooth was not impacted and had already very clearly erupted), and heard from multiple friends that they had spent exponentially more at Total Health Dental than with any other dental service. I have since left Total Health Dental and am thrilled to finally be free of them and with a new dentist that I trust. I wondered for a long time if this was all in my head, like maybe I had been overreacting (despite the fact that no other dentists had agreed with their aggressive recommendations, and even when friends had similar experiences). However, I did get an email from them recently that they're offering a new service: semaglutide prescriptions for weight loss. If someone can explain to me how semaglutides are a necessary *dental service* and not a blatant cash grab, I'm all ears. read more

Went in for my usual cleaning and it was excellent - I saw Diane and Jessica. I got excellent care and treatment and good advice on how to care for my teeth. I always enjoy my visits here and get good treatment. Diane is an excellent hygienist and I really like going to her and Jessica is an excellent dentist and I appreciate her attention to my teeth. This place has lost some of its luster over the last few years. It used to offer free massages, dietary consultation and even acupuncture hence the name "Total Health Dental". Now they don't offer any of that. It naturally went away during Covid and never came back. Cost savings i assume. They also used to have a friendly front desk staff that I knew all by name and likewise. Now its all strangers and outsourced calls to confirm my appointment. My last appointment I received several calls and text messages despite confirming with the first call. All these negative points don't overshadow that I still go twice a year for my cleanings and whatever else I need. And that is because dental hygienist Diane is great! We always have great conversations while she cleans my teeth and I trust her with my teeth health. As well as dentist Jessica who is also great and I have been working with for years. read more

I was a new patient at this office a few years ago and my first impression was great- the cleaning was fast and painless and it was easy to get an appointment. The hygienist and the doctor were very nice. But then, the doctor took x-rays and told me I needed extensive and expensive dental work, including a major filling and 2 crowns where they would have to drill away a lot of my teeth. They told me about their 3D printing machine that made crowns in-house (I started to get suspicious knowing this). I was surprised that my teeth needed so much work, so I went to get a second opinion. The second doctor (very small old-school office) said the crowns were not necessary at all, and I just got some minor fillings done. It's been several years and I've moved a few times and had a few other dentists, and not a single other dentist said I needed more than a minor filling. I've been going here for years and they always take great care :) (I'm super hard on my teeth and had a lot of work done!) Their free evaluation includes detailed X-rays and 3D high-res scans that show every detail and crack that might lead to future problems so you can take care of them before they get out of hand (and more expensive!) but they never push any work on you. always reasonable about what you can put off for later, get other quotes, etc. and if you need a crown they can mill them in-house so you don't have to come back another day! Pro tip: ask for a "bite block" to keep your mouth open so your jaw doesn't get sore, and some lip balm so your lips don't get chapped! I also go for only 1/4 shot of pain killer and I can't feel a thing and no numb mouth and cheek biting after! but most people might prefer 1/2 shot ;) read more

Please read the negative reviews and stay away from Total Health Dental! The negative reviews are very indicative of the experience that I and several friends have had. The hygienists are great, but the dentist always spent very little time with me. I have chronic gum issues, and I did not feel listened to, supported, or taken care of by the dentist. I switched to a new dentist and it has been such a relief. Also, don't go to Total Health if you have Delta Dental as they are not in network. Please read the reviews about Total Health charging exorbitant prices and pushing people into having costly procedures. This has happened to several people I know and is clearly a pattern. read more

I have been having issues with Total Health from the beginning, but it feels impossible to find another dentist in the Bay that is NOT total health. I am constantly having billing issues and quality of care issues. I went in about three years ago for a crown, and not only had the dentist making disparaging comments about my teeth, but also forgot about me while with other patients while I have a mold in my mouth, drooling all over myself and almost choking on my saliva. After getting the crown, I decided to go to another dentist for the rest of my dental work. That dentist informed me that the crown Total Health did was NOT properly sealed, which means bacteria can still get in under the crown and destroy my tooth. I have been reaching out to Total Health for over a year to try to get a refund, and have sent them the x-rays showing them that they DID NOT seal the crown correctly. They are very unresponsive. The sad thing is the dental hygienists I have had have been great, but their billing and dentists have not been. I have been to multiple Total Health offices and would not recommend any of them. read more

I unfortunately haven't been to the dentist in years, I felt like I was starting over. Total Health Dental Care made my first visit very easy. The front desk staff were very courteous. The assistant who took my X-rays and photos was very thorough, knowledgeable and friendly. The dentist was great, I appreciated her explanations and reasonings around what I need to get done. What I appreciated the most is they were very honest about what I needed and recommended the least invasive option. I don't typically like to write negative reviews because I know businesses are struggling through covid but I was sucked in by the good reviews for this place and felt I needed to add my warning. Maybe I missed the part where this is a high end dental office but wow, their prices are ridiculously high even with insurance. I believe I paid over 800$ (with insurance) for deep cleanings. At the time, I thought this was normal and so I paid for it. The cleanings were decent but the amount of anesthesia they used just for a cleaning was so excessive. My previous dentists before would warn me about possible pain/discomfort I might experience and would ask if I wanted anesthesia and I would usually be fine without it. Here, they would just start shooting me up once I sat down. I also didn't jibe with the dental hygienist but I kept going to finish the sessions I paid for upfront. My partner didn't agree with his overpriced quote for a filling and decided to go check out a different dental office and there, it was fully covered by his insurance. I could've just been unlucky with my experience here but there are plenty of more reasonable dental offices around who won't upsell or overcharge you for basic maintenance dental services. read more

This was the sketchiest dental experience that I have EVER HAD. I needed to get X-rays done to make sure I didn't have an infection following a dental procedure I had elsewhere and went here bc it was a Sunday. The tech who looked very young and seemed inexperienced hit the tooth that was in throbbing pain about 3 times after me repeatedly asking her to be careful. After the X-rays were taken I realized there was no dr actually in the office and that the "consultation" would be taking place in a virtual session.. The dr then told me I had no infection and that there was nothing at all to be concerned with. They blamed my soreness on me potentially over flossing. Another tech came in the room after my consultation with the teledoc with a bill for $2,000 for a supposed cleaning that they were suggesting. Also telling me how horrible of a job my dentist had done on my new crown and that they were going to have to go and in and completely redo my post & how that was going to cost x amount.. Fast forward to the dental appointment with my actual dentist. My tooth is in-fact infected, I needed to be on antibiotics and I am scheduled to have a root canal very soon bc the tooth is now dead. I'm disappointed in the service that I received and the fact that I could have developed a serious infection had I listened to the advice given at this location. I have been a patient of this Total Health Dental Care location for over a decade and have always appreciated the friendly and transparent service that everyone has offered here. Diane has been my go-to hygienist for as long as he has been there - she is genuinely friendly and provides consistently thorough cleanings and good conversation (imagine that!), including checking in with you about how she's doing throughout the appointment. She always takes her time and you feel "so fresh, so clean" coming out of every appointment with her! Bring whatever questions you have to her about your dental regimen and she will be happy to provide tips and feedback. I also recently had a new nightguard made that helps with my teeth grinding at night. Joey was very thorough with taking the molds of my teeth and during the delivery of the nightguard, where he took extra time and care to refine the edges off the new nightguard. I have had no issues with the nightguard while wearing it at night and it is hands-down the best (and admittedly fanciest) one I have ever used! Dr. Jessica has been my dentist for the past several years - she has always made the right decisions when it came to diagnosing cavities and dental work that I have needed, including a crown a few years ago that was done very well. You can tell that all of the staff really enjoy having her there, and that speaks to her interpersonal skills with them and their patients. The receptionists always seem friendly and helpful, and I have never had issues with the billing side of the office - they have always been transparent and fair about any outstanding charges that my insurance does not cover. Andiarra has held down that side of the office for years and has been helpful in the past with reconciling any charges, in addition to everything else that she does! Overall, I mean it when I say I would have been long gone if this office did not treat me right. They have always treated me with the utmost care and respect. I had an awful experience with Total Health Dental Care. I had a check-up appointment in February. I have insurance that fully covers check-ups. However, during my appointment, I was told that they hadn't verified my insurance yet and I needed to pay to be later reimbursed by Total Health when they received my insurance approval. I paid the bill. Since no one contacted me afterward, I emailed them, but no one answered. After some time, I used their chat on the website, where they told me that they had created a ticket and that someone would contact me about my bill. No one did. I wrote to them again, expressing my frustration this time. The next morning, someone from their billing office called and told me I had to file a claim with my insurance myself. I asked them to send me a copy of the bill, and they assured me they would send it to my email. They didn't - it's been a few days. I will try to call them again, but I'm very frustrated and disappointed I spent so much time dealing with it when my insurance fully covers it. Don't go there, they are unprofessional. read more

I ended up following my wife's lead and scheduling an appointment with a Total Health and Dental Care in Berkeley. I've now been visiting this office regularly for the last five years. The staff are all extremely friendly! Diane has been my hygienist for all my cleanings and I can attest to how gentle she can be while also cleaning away all the plaque and tartar that builds up on my teeth. I no longer have the overwhelming sense of anxiety when my bi-annual cleanings roll around. Had to get my wisdom teeth extracted. Dr. Chow did a phenomenal job removing my wisdom teeth and explaining everything from beginning to end. The experience felt seem less and although I was a bit anxious; Dr. Chow and his staff did a wonderful job with my tooth extractions. Would definitely recommend going with him if you have something similar. The location is on the third floor btw if anyone is looking for it. read more

Like the dentist (Dr. Jessica) and the hygienist (Diane), but the one at the front desk with an accent ("Idiana?") speaks to some of the patients with a condescending tone, dripping with sarcasm, as if she enjoys making some people feel badly. Then, she sometimes adds a smirk a the end of the conversation, delivering the final punch. This can feel hurtful and for no apparent reason. Unfortunately, this mean-girl behavior can affect the rest of the rest of the dental visit by starting the process off with such a negative spin. Edited to add: Reading other Yelp reviews here, I see I'm not the only one that was hurt by the front desk lady (says her name is "Idiana"). Comments from other reviews copied and pasted below: - "The FOH (front of house) is atrocious. Their admin staff is rude, inflexible and draconian." - Max K. - "but at this location the front desk staff is mean and mocking. Why display so much contempt for patients? Save yourself the hassle! Even in the best of times, going to the dentist can be scary but until the front desk person at this location changes, going here will only make your feelings of COVID anxiety much worse. It's such a hard time for workers who have to do their jobs inside, especially with the smoke where they have to keep windows closed, but at this location the front desk staff is mean and mocking. Why display so much contempt for patients? There's no reason during this time for anyone to tolerate more stress in life. Coming in to my appointment I was nervous to be inside and in close proximity to workers who see people day in and day out, but here I was unable to ask basic questions without conflict and being laughed at. The front desk worker literally laughed at me, and could not stop when I pointed it out. A minor question like "is it possible to reduce the number of notifications you send me" was pushed back at 5 times, refusing to turn them back on when I asked since someone accidentally turned them off. What was the point in arguing about that? The doctors and excellent hygienists (who know the front desk staff is not nice) are not being served by having the front desk dismiss and argue with patients for no justifiable reason. I received a call from the company later that same day to reschedule and they had no interest in what happened or any kind of mediation, confirmed that they have no problem with the behavior of their staff. There is a surplus of kind, easygoing, compassionate front facing administrative workers looking for work during this time and Total Health should use this time to make sure they have the staff that can function in basic customer service, and deescelate rather than escalate basic patient management. read more

I highly do NOT recommend you go to this dentist if you have SHIP. Go somewhere else literally anywhere else. The people working at this dentist are super nice with some seemingly inexperienced and I found out later they're a holistic dentist so up to you to decide. In addition, they take forever to pick up the phone call, I've been calling since morning and they keep sending me to voicemail so good luck getting an appointment or your money back lol but I'm more confused and concerned with their billing procedures. Service: I got a filling done on my front tooth May 18 and they asked me to pay upfront $265.43 for the filling since they calculated it based on the minimum my insurance would pay which I agreed to but thought was weird since the price was so high. After the filling was done, I got the insurance statements about a week after and I contacted them asking them for a reimbursement since the insurance negotiated fee was a lot lower and they covered a majority of it. I called them a week ago and they told me that by the end of the day someone from the billing department would reach out to me about my reimbursement but no one ever did. I called back a week later asking for an update and later that day someone from the billing department sent me a breakdown of my bill with them charging me the rate of their office and not the insurance negotiated rate which I confirmed w my insurance. I called in today and was told that the person from the billing department would call me back in 30 mins. I waited more than an hr and she never called back so I called in and was repeatedly put on hold 5 times and told that she was going to leave in 15 mins since the workday was over. That's totally fine but I've been waiting for 1 hr to get told that and eventually she responded to my email that day and told me to call in the next day to get the accurate refund amount. I've been calling all day and no one is picking up and I just want to get my money back but this is getting beyond ridiculous. I understand that the billing department is super hectic and busy but why is it so hard for a customer to get a proper reimbursement and discuss a potential billing discrepancy when it's been more than 2 weeks. In addition, my insurance told me to call them directly next time and discuss how much I should be paying because they seem to charge way more than they should be and then have it be difficult as hell to get a reimbursement. If you take your customers money upfront, then it should be just as simple and quick to get an accurate reimbursement. read more

So I didn't understand about costs and my new dental insurance-many of the staff were so helpful. I was embarrassed by my teeth and didn't ever want to smile showing my teeth but Diane's very thorough cleaning, friendliness, and professionalism was outstanding. My dental hygienist is fantastic as is the office and everything else about the patient experience. However at my visit today the cost of membership has risen 80% this year! I paid $360 last year, the new bill is $600. I know that everything costs more these days but an 80% increase is unmanageable and shocking, I can no longer afford this dentist. I hope the powers that be in this office come to their senses, I can't recommend a dentist office with pricing models like this. If money doesn't concern you then go ahead. read more

With COVID and all the respiratory viruses going around, of course patients will get sick. Total health dental care does not care about their patients, especially students and disabled patients. Hygienists aren't required to wear high quality masks, and when you get sick, they charge you $50 to just reschedule. I would not recommend going here either as a Berkeley student or anyone else. When I was sick with COVID last year, they even required me to send them a positive test result, which is a violation of your right to privacy as a patient. read more
