On occasion, I'll sip an appletini or two. During game night, we were talking about one of our favorite subjects, liquor, and I mentioned not liking cognac. Well, my girl, Nickie, told me I've got it wrong and not to knock it until I've tried it again at this event- hence an invitation to a Hennessy tasting event at Total Wine. Talk about a lovely time! They served food (thank goodness), Hennessy (oh, yeah!), and even gave us recipe cards to try at home - oh, and did I mention the stainless steel martini-shaker? I learned a lot about the origins of this drink and how it's made. It was quite interesting. Everyone was having a good time, and the samples were very yummy. Real yummy! I was a huge Total Wine fan when I lived in NJ. I drove an hour + to stock up. When they opened the Austin store a day before my birthday I was thrilled. Still the same HUGE selection. Still Conte Priola Pinot Grigio. Sadly no Kitchen Sink red blend, but HEB carries it here. Still fun tastings on the weekends. Annoying cashier girl who awkwardly scans bottles in my cart despite me wanting to put them on the checkout conveyor thingie. Overall a 4-5 star experience every time. But yesterday we had a 10 star experience. OMGoodness, you just have to find Stephen in the wine area. He'll ask a few questions and recommend wines based on your tastes. You will love each of his suggestions. You will love his stories. This sparkling wine was named after the granddaughter of the vineyard owner.... yes please. Best liquor store ever. read more

The order was to come between 6pm and 7pm and there was a big storm. I called the driver and they said they would reattempt delivery because the storm had cleared. I called the store and they said they would reattempt delivery that night with another driver. At 8pm I called again to reconfirm so I didn't have to come in -- and again, I'd get it if they had to cancel, but I just needed heads up. Minutes before closing, I got an automated email that said it was canceled and there was no call or additional note. I'm very disappointed. I know that they use a delivery service like Uber so it's not all within their control, but what poor customer service to not explain the situation, or to personalize the situation in any particular way beyond a click/cancel. It's wine, so it's not the end of the world, but next time I'll just pop into an H-E-B. read more

Once again the staff drag a rating down. Is it so hard to be customer-oriented? Well, at this place it is. The employees act like they will run over you so you have to walk defensively. Seriously, it is like customers are invisible and they are running a warehouse because even when they cut you off, and they will, they don't say excuse me. If you are lucky enough to find what you are looking for you will get a great value but then you schlep to the checkout lane and that is hit or miss as well. Well, mostly miss in my experience. Great selection, nice sales associates thought the store... except for the cashiers and "managers". Cashier refused to honor this coupon that was on a bottle. She then called over a manager (called her Julie, but her name tag said Megan). The manager said we had to mail in the coupon and absolutely refused to help us any further. She even pointed to the address on the coupon and walked off like we were illiterate. But the coupon states it's for the retailer, not the consumer. If your employees can't even be bothered to care, then I'd rather support a local shop, like Twin Liquors. read more

Let's get this out of the way. Yes, Total Wine is a huge, well-appointed store with great selection. Please be aware of the Total Wine business model. Total Wine features hundreds of proprietary brands of wine and spirits. These are basically like "store brands (Kirkland, Hill Country Fare, HEB Organics, etc.), but they are not clearly labelled as such. Total Wine has favorable cost on these items, so they are pushed heavily by store displays, signage, and employees. The profit on these items subsidizes relatively-low pricing on national brand products. The problem is that the recommendations can be misleading, as the house brands are often not that great. I became suspicious after a number of Total Wine recommendations for wine turned out to be really bad. There had to be an explanation for why mediocre wines were being pushed so hard...and this was it. I highly recommend shopping Total Wine for the beer section and for national brand spirits and wines. Shop carefully and take the employee recommendations with a huge grain of salt. read more

We just purchased a Keurig Drinkworks Machine. You put a pod filled with mixer and alcohol and you can have mixed drinks anytime you want. The problem is living in Texas you cannot buy the pods online from Keurig. The only stores that carry them in Texas are Total Wine in Houston and Specs in Houston. I called Specs and the person I talked to was friendly, she knew what I was talking about and said she would look into the distributor and how they could get them in Austin. I called Total Wine and had to talk to 4 different people, none of whom seemed interested in doing what Specs offered to do. We place monthly orders with Total Wine for wine and spend a significant amount of money. Guess we will move our wine purchasing to Specs :( read more

1. I go to alcohol stores as often as crack houses these days, but I had heard so much about this place I wanted to check it out. It's magnificent. 2. On the Saturday I was there, there was a Woodford Reserve/Jack Daniels display that would engrave a personal message on the bottle within two minutes. It was the perfect gift for a friend of mine who enjoys the stuff. So I bought one. They should do this all the time. 3. LOVE x 100! Specs who? They carry everything alcohol. They always have a tasting going on AND they carry singles of all their beers so you don't have to commit to a full 6 or 12 pack just to try something. The staff is always so helpful and nice. It's nice to have this location up north, but the close proximity could be dangerous. They just opened last week and my wife's already been twice. There was a large crowd this weekend, but it was worth braving to see the place. They have a great selection of beer, including my favorite craft beers. Their food selection is pretty limited, but I don't know anyone that's coming here for food. There's grocery stores close enough for that. There is a classroom in the back where they will hold wine and beer instructional sessions, which could be fun. Nice store, good selection and the staff was friendly and helpful. read more

What a fitting location for Total Wine, in an old Toys R Us! This place gets me just as excited as a kid coming here 10 years ago. Lots of wine selections at pretty good prices. I say that because some prices are higher than I've found at smaller wine shops, but overall, the prices are good and the selection is grand. The lows: they aren't able to order whatever like I've found at other stores. They are limited to basically what they normally carry. The party food section is not nearly comparable to Spec's, but their close proximity to my house means I'll probably be back again soon. read more

I love Total Wine. When ever I go on a road trip, as was the case with this visit, I stop in and stock up! There was plenty of hand sanitizer available at the entrance. There was a tasting station near the entrance with a nice lady offering samples of Mezcal from behind a plexiglass. We were warmly greeted by every employee we passed and offered assistance. The employees are very knowledgeable about their wines, I just told them the taste I was looking for and they led me right over to the options that matched. This store is always well stocked, clean and the staff is very helpful and courteous. I was particularly impressed with the way they handled the COVID mandates; A sign was on the front door noting masks must be worn, ample hand sanitizers and wipes were readily at the entrance, and the carts are always clean. From the very beginning of the pandemic, I was always comfortable shopping at Total Wine. I remember the first time I walked into the new Specs on Mopac I said out loud holy cr@p this is going to be an expensive day. I had the same thought as I walked into Total Wine. Cabernet? Here they are 100s of em from A to Z. Vodka, hmmm Polish vodka or a large Titos for $19.99.... single malt scotch and aisle of em, beer from everywhere, oh a walk in humidor, excellent. I think it might even be better then Spec's, we went here this past weekend to get some mini liquor bottles we were making goody bags with and I was beyond amazed by the selection I lost my husband for a little while also and he came back with some captain morgan reserve that he has been looking for for a few months now. TOYS R US FOR ADULTS!!! It's funny because it really used to be a Toys R Us. So many options and the best prices around. Be careful when you walk in. I went in to purchase beer that I enjoyed in Minneapolis MN area. I found out that stores carry different beers based on region. I was a little let down. I did happen to find Deshutes Black Butte Stout so I didn't come out empty handed. I asked an employee to look up the beers that I wanted and was told they didn't carry and couldn't order. read more

Their prices and selection cannot be beat! I walked in 10 minutes before closing time yet the employees did not make me feel rushed. The layout is fluid, although I had never been to a TW&M I quickly found the dry rose aisle (yes the dry rose has its own section!) and found the local beer. I was completely dumbfounded at how inexpensive the wines and beer are. I did see a nice display highlighting Texas liquors and beer so props for supporting local. They carry some specialty cans like Independence Brewery "OK Sucks" and Miller Light ACL Festival beer. As long as you are not seeking out Pappy Van Winkle chances are TW&M has what the spirits you're looking for at an exceptional price. read more

In the wise old words of Whoopi from "Ghost", "Keri, you in trouble girl!". And apparently so are a lot of far northies as this joint was packed to the gills on grand opening day. Like a deer in headlights, I just kinda froze upon entering. My brain could not comprehend the vastness before me. Bottles n bottles, talkin all of dat. Then, as I moved in, I found myself humming "Heaven...I'm in heaven...". Yes, Total Wine has a huge selection, altho they were missing a few of my most treasured items, like Golden Monkey beer. But, during Grand Opening they are having some huge markdowns on other staples like Woodford Reserve, Deep Eddy Lemon, and several tasty wines. There were tons of staff mixed in the crowds to help locate things as well, which I appreciated since the wine selection is so huge and confusing. I looked all over the far side of the store in the wine section but still couldn't find Chardonnays or Cab Sauvs. I gave up and moseyed on to the hard stuff and found those two varietals in the middle section of the store. Also, I like how they have a store's selection or "best buys" in each wine section, but then each wine section also confused me. Of course, the most expensive bottles were on the "top shelf" but all the rest in the bottom tiers ran all over the map from $3 to $35 all mixed together. Maybe I was just overstimulated but I felt a bit overwhelmed in that wine selection. One "good" thing about their wine selection is you get a 10% discount on any combo of six bottles, which of course just encouraged me to buy in multiples of six. So, no, TEN bottles is now not enough....but I figure the discount covers the cost of those last two bottles. It's circular wino thinking but apparently Total Wine gets me. And, they had tons of tastings for Grand Opening, one stall which looks more permanent that was serving in real tiny glass glasses. So haute! I also snagged a complimentary wine guide (or textbook) that was huge and super informative on everything from growing grapes to tasting wine to each region and varietal. The store also has a humidor, of course every kind of glass from Riedel to Solo, and a few snacks but not a whole lot of food choices. I signed up for the e-newsletter so I can find out their sales and classes (they have a classroom in the store). I sooo wanna go to school here. I found a customer's wallet in an empty shopping cart and turned it in to the customer service person asking that they contact that person. The store was not busy at all. When I was checking out, I asked her if they'd been able to contact the wallet's owner and she remarked that she was sure that the person will call them when they notice it's missing. Incredibly poor consideration for their customers. Absolutely no empathy for another human. The wallet had a driver's license and credit cards, so was incredibly important to that customer. Glad that wasn't me, but I won't be going back to take the chance. read more

dear total wine & more: as we walked out of your beautiful new store in nw austin, i said to my husband "that was... exhilarating". should i be concerned? signed, a thirsty citizen for those who did not tailor their day's plans to attend Total Wine's opening day festivities, let me tell you - you will find most any and every kind of magical elixir here (but not my local favorite wines from Tranquilo - so kindly get on that, TW! - although it's quite possible that i just missed them due to the sheer square footage of TW). the staff is plentiful and available and extremely helpful. the prices are good. the specials are enticing. the store is huge with nice wide aisles. the selection is impressive. it is _almost_ overwhelming. almost but, thankfully, not quite. i am trying to figure out how to do my weekly grocery shopping at TW. i mean, sure there's no fresh produce, and sure i'd have to think of creative ways to serve cheese puffs and chocolate bars so they pass for "dinner" but come on, hasn't that whole food triangle thing been debunked by now anyway? one thing would be for certain - my family would never suffer from thirst. word to the wise (and thirsty): everyone in your party will need their own cart. this place is delicious mischief. read more

Ok this place is dangerous. Start with the fact that my bride was way too excited for this grand opening, and we even went right after they unlocked the doors for the first time so she could feel all the excitement. Folks running the place were super nice and helpful, perhaps too much so. At one point I discovered that my wife had started a second cart. A second cart. At a liquor store. The place is huge, honestly, I can't see how any store in the area could possibly beat their selection of booze, wine and beer. The beer choices were insane. So. Much. Beer. I suppose I should be grateful that I didn't have to resort to pleading to get my wife out of there. Hell, it's a WORK DAY. We dialed it back to one cart, got a nice selection of wine, beer and a couple of bottles of liquor, and vowed to regulate our visits going forward. So happy there is a Total Wine close to cedar park. They have soooo many beers. My husband likes a beer that's hard to find ( Trumer Pils) and they have it. Can't wait to come back and try more of there unique beer selections. It will be a new quest for my husband and I to try them all. Haha The food selection is not very much, but the selection of wine and other spirits is great. The staff is willing to help you. They had some really great buys for the opening. Came to pick up a specific liquor ingredient for a drink I was wanting to make and they had it, and in 3 sizes as well, which was nice. Prices here are simply put, the best in town. You may, MAY get lucky and find something a dollar cheaper when on sale some place else, but on any given day you will pay less here for a basket of goods, easily, and you don't need to wait for the sale price or pay with a debit card, so you can still get your Credit Card's reward points for purchases here. The liquor selection at this store is comparable to the South location, and I thought had a few more specialty liqueurs on first glance actually. I didn't look to closely at the wine, but noticed Decoy Cab was $18 here instead of almost $21 at HEB, Central Market and $20 at Specs. Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio is also a few dollars cheaper than anywhere else in Austin, even when its on sale elsewhere. There is a singles beer section with a respectable selection, including a dedicated cider chunk as well. I'm definitely a fan. read more

While some of the local liquor stores concentrate on hard liquor, this one essentially has surrounded the nucleus of a typical liquor store with an even bigger wrap-around inventory of wines. It's built in the old Toys-R-Us building in the shopping center, so I couldn't help thinking Wines-R-Us when I walked in the door. I overheard a guy say, "This is like Home Depot for alcoholics." At any rate, they have a huge variety of most every kind of alcohol you could want. Pricing is about equal to Spec's, less or more in some cases. Tasting booths are set up at various points around the store, with a tasting schedule posted above each, like showtimes at Sea World. There's a tasting classroom set up at the back, and they offer various tasting events several times a month. The day we were there, one of the tasting hosts, Aaron, gave us some helpful recommendations and even took us into his classroom to let us try a couple of products he recommended. Great customer service. They have a loyalty club you can join for free, and each purchase earns points that entitle you to three levels of perks. First level gets you onto their email list for special offers and sales. Second level gets you product upgrades and invitations to special events. Third level gets you special limited release product notifications and consultations by appointment, because by then you're a pretty big spender at Total Wine. Went today for the grand opening! Got 2 free glasses and a wine bag! Woohoo! The store is huge! They even have a complimentary wine chiller to chill your wines.. It looked perty fancy! I had the help of a young lad picking out 6 fantastic foreign red wines! He knew his stuff! I learned more talking to him then I did in Napa Valley. I'm all about good wines without a bunch of chemicals and fillers and so was he so he directed my wine snob ass in the direction I needed to be in. I saw lots of liquor at decent prices, fun gifts.. A jimador room.. No thanks but cool.. Lots of check out counters and lots of help all over the store.. The reason for 4 stars... Well.. Because I asked if they did Military Discounts like Specs and some Twins in town.. Was told yes. Handed them my ID. Apparently they processed transaction and didn't do discount. I say don't worry about it and about to head on my way with my goodies.... Was told to come to another register to get the discount and I politely declined.. The gentleman told me he wanted to learn how to do it so I followed the leader.. After a few minutes of him and another gent chatting about it I overhear a discussion about them not offering the military discount.. I was told that I already got 10% off so they couldn't offer it on top of it. Ok no problem. So I ask if I came in and bought a bottle of liquor will they offer it then? I want to know what to report back to my military friends. We share stuff like this :) Nope... They told me they were trying it out at other stores like in San Antonio and may offer in future.. I've shopped at a lot of Total Wines on the East Coast and was super excited to see they were opening in Austin. They have the awesome variety and unique items I expect from my previous experiences with Total Wine but the reason for the deduction in stars was the lack of help from the staff on the floor. My previous Total Wine I shopped at in another state, everyone was super helpful and friendly. I never had to track someone down to ask a question. While the person who assisted me was helpful, it was disappointing I had to actively seek out help when I've never had to do that at other stores. I even had a Manager walk past me when I first walked in, he looked at me and didn't even say hello or acknowledge my presence. read more
