    Happy Sweetest Day!
    Trish S.

I visited Total Wine when I lived in Minnesota, so I was somewhat familiar with the store, or at least the concept. Since we don't have a 'big box' liquor store up in the Yoop, I went in there with a shopping list. OK, mostly I was there to buy sake, which isn't a high retail demand item in Da North Woods. Or not yet. It took a bit of wandering but I found what I was looking for. The selection was interesting. I found the bottles that I consider to be our 'house brands' (Kurosawa and Momo Kawa ). I also saw some new (to me) bottles and picked up a few. There was also an adorable mini glass of sake that I had to have just for the keepsake once empty. No line at the register to speak of, even for an early-ish Saturday. The cashier was super friendly and told me all about the rewards club, which sounded generous for those that enjoy imbibing. I got out of there on the cheap and Smokin'Hubster was quite pleased with the haul. Now to try the new brands and plan a special meal for the house favorites!

The dinner itself brings you on a real journey of flavors, and it is one that is never repeated twice. From the first light stop of a variation of bruschetta, that holds creamy textures and the real sweetness only homemade bread can bring, it glides you to a second course. Four to five bite-size appetizers are introduced to your palate in a manner that is akin to meeting new strangers. The variability of seafood, to the freshness of salads with seasonal combinations, to traditional tastes of Northern Italy, and the occasional heartiness of street food. We then move to our next stop, that of the one of the two main courses. Usually, as all stereotypes tend to say, a dish of pasta is served. However, there is a full range that is thoroughly explored. New landscapes of flavors are married, from saffron and blueberry to black garlic and cocoa, and many more. Yes, the traditional side is honored as well, from the chef's own region of Piedmont and its abundances in mountainous recipes and ingredients, alike the winter season that overtakes the North. To even a fully celebrated and homey wild boar ragù Bolognese, spaghetti alla Nerano, or to a pesto Genovese. It lingers on the buds, and it grows with a sense of warmth that provides a blossoming curiosity.

I only loved the gnocchi. The meats were not good & the seafood ceviche was too fishy. My biggest complaint is that not one dish was hot. All lukewarm. I appreciated presentations, but was underwhelmed for the price. Too many other Italian restaurants to go with delicious food.....

The establishment creates a nice hybrid space giving the ambiance of a retail store and a tasting experience. We were the only party in attendance for most of the time. Jen, the sole employee at the time, was helpful, attentive and personable. (Note: we arrived around 4 on a Thursday, so we didn't expect it to be busy.) There was a really broad range of available wines of many different varieties. Being from another state, I was impressed to find that Michigan had so many styles to offer, even Cabs and Pinot Noir most often associated with lower latitudes. We went with the flight options giving us 3, 3oz pours for the price of a nice, full glass of wine. At the time, our table really enjoyed the oaked Chardonnay and a Malbec. We took advantage of the $5 coupon that comes with the flight by purchasing a few bottles when we left. Snack options were available. We enjoyed a baguette with some goat cream cheese. Another item was our first choice, but they were out. We also enjoyed the cashews. If you are looking for a full meal, lunch or dinner, you can order in from DoorDash -- the sky is the limit! Overall, enjoyable experience to share with friends and loved one! Overall rating - 3.75. (Note: it's hard for me to go 4 or higher just because this is missing the winery "feel." That has nothing to do with this place, but more my preference.)

We went for trivia and expected it to be the same as always, unfortunately it was not. They erased our points we've earned for a free glass, these are no longer honored. The menu has significantly changed: flights are $2-$3 more, no longer include flight bites, an upcharge for premium pours (which is understandable), no longer has a $5 bottle credit, and each glass is now $3-$5 more per pour. Why did you have to make every last item on the menu more expensive? I understand that the economy and inflation contribute to these things, but to increase the price and get less on everything throughout the menu plus not honor points earned for a free glass is a slap in the face. I'm just crushed at the blatant disrespect for the regulars that come every week for trivia or other events, no warning. Our trivia night just got a whole lot more expensive and we will be looking at other locations with more reasonably priced beverages and snacks. I hope they still allow us to bring in our own food, they did this week but who knows if that will also change. The staff seemed stressed telling us the new rules as well.
