In a land where liquor lotto stores are a dime-a-dozen, Hills Fine Wine & Spirits is an absolute godsend. Don't let the location's size fool you--the small, intimate setting is stocked floor to ceiling with everything on the the owners can get their hands on. If it's on the Michigan list of available liquor, you'll find it here. Since Hill's is a family-run operation, the staff takes the time to make it personal. On the very first visit, Sonny took the time to learn our names, ask about our interests, and explore our palate preferences (I was dead-set on finding a local wine... he steered us in the right direction). And on the second visit? He remembered our names and interests, gave more recommendations and offered tastings. All of the family is invested in their customer service--we've never had a visit that didn't result in absolutely courteous, attentive care. Once, even to let us in a few minutes after closing (they close at 9pm Mon-Sat and 6pm on Sun). Can't say enough about this place. Check out their cigar selection, their unique mixers/juices, fine wines, beer and spirit availability, and overall wall-to-wall awesomeness. They offer case discounts and delivery, with low to competitive pricing so you can get all this ambiance and intrigue without breaking the bank. I do have to say, this place seems to have it all. Wine, beer, liquor and alcohol of all kinds. I love the fact that they cover all the bases here in regards to wine and price, and the selection is quite nice. I came here today because I just wanted a little test bottle of whisky since I'm not feeling all that hot, and didn't feel like spending time in a grocery store getting it. The guy behind the counter was friendly and helpful, and answered the few questions I had. The only down side to this place is the parking sucks!!!!! Don't let the small appearance on the outside fool you. They even have some meats and cheeses in the cooler, along with wine stuff to buy like nice corks and a bunch of other stuff. Weather you need boring table wine or something more expensive, come check this place out. Totally worth it. read more

Yelp says 2 stars is: "Meh, I've experienced better." And that's definitely the case here. This was my "go to" for about 2 years. I probably patronized The Hills...80 times, and spent many thousand dollars. Every time I came in, it was like "Welcome to The Hills," if anything. Are you kidding me, you don't recognize me at all, when I've been coming in at least once a week for 2 years (and I'm definitely not...unrecognizable...LOL). You have 2 of the friendliest and truly appreciative shops a short drive away, who will remember your face after 1-2 visits, and your name after a few more: Bloomfield Wine & Spirits is a mile west on Long Lake, just across Telegraph. And Kakos is a couple miles south on Woodward, northwest corner of 14 Mile & Woodward. (I've heard there are other great shops in the area as well. ML is worth a visit.) The Hills is not a horrible place. It's just resting on its prime location, and not putting in much effort, while other shops leave it in the dust in terms of service and personality. read more

I've been ripped off here twice now and have learned my lesson not to return. Latest example: Hopslam is a rare beer. Every year it comes out in the winter so I stopped by to see if they had it. They did, asking $21. I thought it was pricey but I'll get it anyway. When I went to the counter the "gentleman" there rudely said "if you read the sign you'd know you have to buy another Bell's 6 pack in order to get this". I bought something else and left, never going back. I went up to Hollywood Market the next night and found the same pack for $16. And no, you didn't have to buy another 6 pack. The guy at Hills said this was a new Bells policy which I believe is a lie. Essentially this guy is a crook. I think he feels he can do what he wants with prices because of the wealth of most of his clientele, but I still have my standards and will not be taken advantage of. read more

Recently moved and have come here a couple times, once pre- Covid and once during. To my shock and disgust, the owner has raised prices and chosen to price gouge during the Covid pandemic. When I asked about it, he got angry and aggressive. Stay away from this place due to its unethical and (maybe) illegal practice of price gouging. The first time I came into hills, i was looking for a nice bottle of scotch for my father as a gift. I know absolutely nothing about scotch. The person behind the front desk spent over 30 minutes with me going over scotches, and even let me try some of them. I ended up dropping quite the penny, but was so happy to do so because I ended up with a limited edition bottle that my dad jumped out of his seat for. Excellent excellent selection here and a 2 minute drive from my parents' house. They have a wide selection of wines, liquors, and beers. My Dad is a frequent for his Scotch. I decided to check out some of the Michigan brews you can't find in New York. Selected a Traverse City cherry wheat. More tart than sweet but interesting and well, we are the cherry state. It is a little bit pricier than Kroger but you will find a more unique and intriguing selection here. It's a little fancy pants. The guy who works here is super sweet! read more

I had a friend visiting from Napa California (wine capital of America) and he mentioned to me about a Regusci vineyard but he had not had a chance to try their wine. I never heard of it but dropped in to Hills Fine Wine just to ask before my friend flew in. The clerk not only knew the wine but all their various varietals. He then pulled a 2014 Cabernet Select off the shelf and told me if we didn't love this wine he would refund me the price. I noticed a bottle of bourbon on the counter that I have wanted to try and bought it compulsively. I love this place! read more

Stopped in here today due to the convenient location and in the spirit of supporting local businesses during our quarantine. I had 2 specific things I wanted to purchase and then picked up a bottle of Caymus Cabernet which was a 1 liter bottle, there was no price displayed and while I knew is was on the higher end price, I was not expecting what I was charged. When he rang up the items I was shocked at the cost of the wine but felt embarrassed to say I no longer wanted it. I typically leave the wine buying to my husband (and after this experience, I'll be sure to do that moving forward). When I got home and told him how much I paid for it he said there was no way I should have been charged that much...he felt I was over charged by $35-$40 based on his online research. My husband called the store and asked how much the wine cost and he said the same amount that I paid...he then proceeded to tell the store owner that it was way over priced and wanted to know if he was adding a Cornoavirus tax...the man was not overly concerned. We have a good friend who owns a liquor/wine store in Michigan but on the other side of town and called him and he also said that we were greatly overcharged. Beware of this location. If you are looking for a great place to go near Hills...I would highly recommend ML on Woodward which is an amazing place and they are always super helpful...It's actually our go to place, but I just wasn't near it. I know I will NEVER stop at Hills again. With everything going on in the world today, taking advantage of people doesn't bode well with me. read more

I was looking for a 40th birthday gift for a friend/client that we are building a home for. I went to Vintage Wine & Spirits in Orchard Lake and explained that the bar is the focal point / heart of the home so I wanted something special. The owner talked me into a scotch called Tomatin Decades that he told me was not available online or in any local store (made up of scotch from 5 different decades). It was $190.77 including tax. I left very excited about my unique purchase....until I got on my phone at the traffic light and googled it and found it readily available for $92.39 from Wine Wise, $115.49 from international Wine, $106.18 from Amity Wines, etc. I then called Hills Fine Wine & Spirits on Long Lake and Woodward to see if they had it....they did...for $99.00 a bottle (Plus tax is $104.94). I turned around and went back to the store to let him know I made a purchased based upon the grossly inaccurate representations (lies) he very clearly made to me and I was very angry. He refused to refund my purchase (state law) and after much discussion, reluctantly gave me $50 back. Now I know which store to trust for my wine and liquor purchases!
