This is a nice market equipped with enough of the basics to get you what you need. A decent produce selection and a small meat counter. I wasn't sure how big the meat section was going to be, it is small and quaint but quality meat. There was also a nice selection of teas and coffees with some being local choices. I also saw some local made soap and honey which I love. I love supporting local and small businesses. Even though I purchased nothing last night, I'll be back for another shopping trip. I think this place is probably more ideal for fresh foods for a meal that day rather than a big grocery shop. read more

Great place for all the dietary specialty foods, prices are more expensive for some of the regular items. Overall they have a great selection of cheeses/wines in the back with fresh bread in the center. Produce in the front great quality, and the dry goods section has a lot of variety! This is a nice and spacious local grocery store in Las Cruces across from the New Mexico State University campus. It has got an eclectic selection of products. New Mexican made products are well represented. Came in search of local chili powder and was able to find it here along with some green chile peanut brittle. If you are looking for specialty foods in Las Cruces, I would recommend this store. read more

This store has a lot of items you may not find anywhere else. I came in for lettuce and tomatoes since I didn't want to make the drive to Walmart and Toucans is around the corner. The prices are crazy high, at least in my opinion. I definitely wouldn't be shopping here for food. They do have a great alcohol and wine selection and I was able to pick up some local wine bottles as well as some imported. The cashier was friendly during my check out which is always a plus. read more

The cashiers at Toucan Market are top notch - all friendly and always hustling. The people maintaining the fruit and veg are fantastic - the displays always look superb. I've heard the meat and fish are great, and the bakery offerings look good. The wine and beer selection is good, but much pricier than anywhere else in town. That said, my heart absolutely BREAKS when I'm in this store - everytime. We talk about students being saddled with student debt that weighs them down for a lifetime - well most students also take out extra $ for food + living expenses. And SADLY - NMSU has no other grocery options in reasonable walking distance. And this store absolutely gouges the hell out of these kids. Maybe someone should pass on the calculation for pricing - you buy in bulk and get a discount - then charge regular price for the food. That difference is the store profit. So why in the HELL is a bag of generic pasta $10??? Why is this vanilla ice cream $20 after tax??? I regularly shop at Whole Foods and it's FAR cheaper than Toucan. Why?? Maybe the management can pipe in and respond. The community came together a few years back to keep this shop alive, and this is no way to repay them. This is a neat little grocery with some amazing finds. I stopped here twice while in Las Cruces for work. The selection of premade foods was a little lacking but they all but made up for it in their drink, bakery, and chocolate selections. This store reminded me of a miniature, hipper, Whole Foods. With friendly folks and a fun health food type spin on most of their products. They do have grab and go lunch/dinner options found near the deli which I appreciated. The kombucha selection was almost overwhelming ans I was excited to try so many different kinds! I'll be back the next time I'm in New Mexico for sure! Pro-tip: the chocolate section is near the cashiers toward the front. They have some amazing artisinal chocolates my personal favorite being the Cartel Chocolate made in ABQ. It's a nice little grocery store, I didn't even know what it was and I've lived about a mile from it for years. It carries a lot of locally made & grown products like sauces, fruits & Vegetables and even the beef they sale is local. It has a little bit of everything not to expensive just a little higher than Walmart but if you need to run in and grab something quick in a low traffic grocery this is a good place. Everything looked clean and well maintained. They even sale local art they put up along the walls. They have a little eatery and a few tables you can eat breakfast or lunch at. Small bakery not the best but not the worse. Nice selection of wines & alcohol. It's not a fancy place or even that big but it has a little bit of everything. I will shop here more often it kinda grows on you. The only thing they need to work on is their customer service. No one really greets you or asks if you need help with anything. They're not rude but just kinda let you do your own thing. read more

The best meat I have bought in Las Cruces! Their butcher dept is way above regular supermarket offerings. There are lots of choices and if they don't have it, you can usually order it. But that's not all - they have so many fun local foods. There is more local produce than at the farmers market! The corn and the watermelon rocked. They also have hard to find artisanal sourdough. This is the place to go if you want to have a real butcher take care of you. For almost a year we have been going to Coronado Meat Market in El Paso for our steaks and other meats to grill. Come to find out this little gem has snagged one of their butchers and is a LOT closer. Plus they get a terrific selection of seafood Mon, Wed and Fri. I was told if I give them notice they can get me oysters or most any seafood I need. So 5 stars for their meat and seafood selection! It's not a big supermarket. But their produce is fresh and not overpriced. Loved finding parsnips! And the little table of reduced price produce was a great find! I use most of my veggies the day I buy. So it saved me cash. It's also nice they give the produce a last chance before getting tossed. I love this neighborhood store. Personal service, fantastic meat market, fresh donuts... Pop in. You'll feel much more relaxed shopping here than you do at the big florescent lit box stores! read more

Bad meat. Bought some chicken wings yesterday. Was going to cook them today but when I unwrapped them I was overcome by the rancid smell. Sticker on the meat said they were good for another day or two. Running the air purifier to get rid of the nasty smell. Won't shop at Toucan's ever again. read more

We went here to get last minute gifts as we were needing something last minute to take to out of town guests gifts that are just found locally. New Mexico Green Chile Salt is always a hit. Found in aisle. Produce is fresh and reliable sometimes local. Fabulous bakery with dee-lish croissants, breads, brownies, Eclairs. Deli counter with higher end lunch meat and cheeses. Other speciality items available for all types of cuisine from Thai to Vegan. A must when you are that way. read more

This place is great on fresh produce and meat. However, it's bakery is limited to sweets. I wish they would have a deli. Their items are also a bit pricey. I prefer Sprouts because they have a larger selection and more products with the Sprouts name, making the items less expensive. read more

Just moved into town a couple weeks ago from CA and was worried about not being able to find certain ingredients at the local market. Being upfront this store is a bit pricey but they offer over 120 products in their store from local vendors which is awesome I don't mind spending a little bit more if that means I'm supporting local businesses. The produce was great I found lemongrass, dragon fruit leeks fennel even bok choy some of these veggies you definitely don't see at the normal grocery store. They also have everything from vegan and health products to speciality cheeses and even a popcorn section. This store reminds me of trader Joe's but more based on showcasing what's local. They have wine beer and even sake here . The cashier was sooo nice and gave my fiance and I a welcome bag with a bunch of goodies and if your a student you get 10% off !! Toucan Market's selection was excellent especially if you're into International foods. Toucan Market bakes their own breads and pastries which looked mighty tasty. Great wine and spirits selection. The prices weren't so great. I paid close to $4 for a packaged Indian food item which comes close to just paying to eat out at an Indian restaurant. Now here's Toucan Market's downfall: Most of the staff was nice but when we got to the checkout, we had this employee who was bagging our items who needed a major attitude adjustment. She was glaring at people and not paying attention that she almost broke some of our items in glass containers. She was tossing the canned food items on top of glass...not cool. When the transaction was complete, I thanked her anyway...no response except turning her back and hopping on her cell phone. Great for local fresh fruit and veggies. The cantaloupe is excellent right now; ripe,sweet and juicy. Picked up yellow watermelon (mmmmm), cantaloupe, brussels sprouts, snow peas and broccoli. Always a great spot for hard to find items. Wide selection of imported cheeses, Boats Head products and always, always great fresh antipasto items. Brought home some maple Boars Head bacon for burgers. Scones and pastries are fresh and yummy do had to have some. They have a wide selection of baked goods including spelt and other gluten free flour products. Picked up cranberry walnut bread and green chile cheddar bread, scones and brioche baguettes. Great liquor department. Wide array of wines and finer spirits. Found the limoncello we like at a price comparable to a local chain. Great location for NM and local products. 10% senior discount on Tuesdays. Convenient to Dublin Street Pub and Joanns Fabrics so, for us, a great place to shop. read more

This is wonderful store with wonderful products that are not double priced but 10-20% over Whole Foods - but whaddya expect from this kind of wonder market in the middle of nowh... um a mid-sized town. This will keep them open for all us who need their specialty products. It is a one stop place. Comfortable - the employees are extremely helpful and seem happy. There was one young man who was tall thin with light blondish red hair who even greeted me personally and offered to help me personally the second time I came in. Now that is service like they used to have in a small towns. The cheese counter is huge. The teas and spices are amazing. They have the best selection of sardines! Sardines is cabarnet or tomato basil - yum. Great produce with a unique variety. Down side is there is not a big selection of shampoos and the medicine section is chaotic - with related items scattered over the shelves. Overall a good experience. read more

The best part of this store is the fish and meat counter. While it is a little pricey the fish is the freshest I have been able to find in town. Other specialty items like Blue Sky Soda are other items that I am glad I can find there. I go here more for specialty items rather than do my grocery shopping. Nice choice to have. read more

Not sure why this place has two identical postings in Yelp, but ok, it's not my server space it's taking up. :P In any case, now that I've been in town six months or so I thought I would post some reviews on some places I keep finding myself going back to in the hopes that it'll help others just passing through town or looking for good places to hit. That said, Toucan has become my "go to" grocery in town. The first reason is simply proximity. I live on the NMSU campus and this is the only grocery within reasonable walking distance. Nothing like having a captive audience, eh? ;) What you have to keep in mind when shopping at Toucan is that this is a higher end grocer. It is as crazy as Whole Paycheck... err, Foods, and the variety isn't quite as good as a Trader Joe's, but it does offer many unique items and organic produce. So if you understand going in that you're going to spend a few more bucks, you won't be disappointed. Overall I find the selections at Toucan to be very good. The produce is fresh, the meat counter is outstanding, and the baked goods are great as well. I'm not a huge wine guy, but the $3 a bottle offers that they run are great for picking up a good bottle of cooking wine or something for a casual dinner. I wouldn't recommend doing "full" shopping trips here, hence four instead of five stars overall. There's no reason to overpay for Cheerios. But for good produce, excellent meats, and unique grocery items, this is a great place to go. read more

Came in today to get some ingredients to make spring rolls. Like always we left with lots of goodies not only for the rolls. We love their blue corn tortilla chips, some spicy jalapeno hummus (on sale for 2.50) this isn't the cheapest place in town, but they have some select items on sale throughout the store. AND 10% off for NMSU students ! That is pretty nice. Toucan Market has a great selection of health food and NOn health food products ...Where else can you find Frosted Flakes,and Organic Kashi cereals side by side ? Not a great selection of veggie burgers though, as I was looking in the frozen section for something to put on the BBQ for Memorial Day. I think I will return to the Coop for some of their hemp and sage burgers. Oh yes the Coop has hemp and sage veggie burgers ... :::sidetracked note:::: People have been asking me recently now 'ohh don't you miss the food in italy?' 'do you miss italy, don't you miss italy?' and my answer, honestly . . is No. when I am here, I don't really miss italy OR the italian food. Just like when I am in Italy I don't miss the plastic looking romaine lettuce or other GMO food I find in the supermarkets here . . . Every fruit here is SEEDLESS this or that. Boo !! But when I am in the USA i love these places like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, farmer's coop, or toucan market ... these places just do NOT exist in Italy and well they don't need to ... but here they do and I love every second of it read more

I don't know why but they always have everything I need even when I don't expect them to. Lots of complaints here about customer service makes me wonder if those people even asked for help. If I can't find something I ask and they are always friendly and accommodating even though I can never remember where the TVP is located. They find it every time cheerfully. Before Thanksgiving I was feeling cheap and made the mistake of going to Walmart (3 of them). What a stressful shopping experience. No turkey, no cream of mushroom soup, no green beans, no marshmallow cream... I was losing all hope and even my will to have Thanksgiving at that point. I went to Toucan and they had everything I needed. Every single item on my list. Their meat is the absolute best. I could find cheaper meat but I'd rather have good meat. I love that they carry local products and that they are locally owned. Several times over the years I have requested specific products and they actually started stocking what I wanted. No other store has ever done that for me. Need help? Ask for it. When I couldn't find pie crust the cashier (Ruby) went and got it for me. The store is small enough that it doesn't take very long. I go out of my way to frequent Toucan for the beer/wine. The selection is excellent by Las Cruces standards- they frequently have regional, seasonal & limited editions you won't find elsewhere but compared to a chain like Total Wine or Bevmo, they can't really compete. Their level of service in this department is really outstanding; a 10 out of 10 and nothing less than 5 stars. It is an asset no one can touch. Their people will go FAR out of their way to make sure the customers are happy w/amazing deals & spot-on recommendations. The liquor manager's name is James but there's 2 James') and I can't count in both hands how many times he was able to either ...I was also recently helped by a gentleman named Josh who might work in a different department Basically I already write the same thing as a tip and I won't drone on and on about it...best liquor department in town is all you need to know. read more

I found the produce to be fresher and a larger selection of local fruits and vegetables than other neighborhood grocers. The prices are considerably higher than what I was accustomed to to paying when I resided in Denver but there is no competition down here as far as I have seen. I hope that Sprouts and Trader Joes consider opening a Las Cruces location. read more

I was hopeful about this place since it's so close to my apartment, but honestly the prices are high compared to other local grocery stores, and their produce selection is frequently wanting. I'd prefer fresher, cheaper stuff that's in season than Toucan's (admittedly more diverse) selection, but often not in great condition and very pricey. I definitely come here for their great 3/$12 wine deal, but avoid grabbing groceries here unless I'm seriously in a rush. read more

I have to respectfully disagree with Joe E. This place is no Whole Foods or Trader Joe's and the prices are twice what you will pay in any other market in Las Cruces. I would recommend Toucan Market only for a special occasion where you are looking for an unusual sea food item or an exceptional cut of meat to impress a friend or loved one. You are out of your mind or ridiculously rich if you shop here every week for all your food needs. Example: 1/2 gallon of Tropicana orange juice is $5.89. You can find it anywhere else for $2.99. This is no Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. The staff is friendly and helpful but the groceries are way over priced.

So here's the thing: if you want to get great local produce or the only good butcher in town, Toucan is your best bet. Both are excellent, and they really know their stuff at the meat counter. I wouldn't buy my meat anywhere else. However, the processed/packaged food selection is $$$ (although if you're looking for specialty ethnic ingredients, come here first). So it's a bit mixed for me, but I do shop there on the regular for the reasons mentioned above. read more

This is a grocery store in the style of Trader Joes / Whole Foods in LC. It has saved me from frequenting Albertsons , and while it doesn't offer everything these other stores have it is a nice place to shop for groceries. I try to support this store as much as possible because they have fresh fruits, meat, and fish that are all exceptionally better than Albertsons. Go look for yourself and grab a slab of Chilean Sea Bass for dinner while you are there. read more

There is a broad selection of healthy, clean foods at good prices. Coming from the Bay Area, I was delighted to find such a great market. There were quite a few organic vegetables and fruits. I would like to see even more organic vegetables/fruits and would then rate it a 5 star! Overall, though, it was a lovely market and the people there were very friendly and helpful. read more
