Early this morning, we drove to White Sands today from Las Cruces and needed to stop for food on our way back. We trust Yelp! so we stopped at Moongate Cafe. Don't be fooled by its exterior if you're not from '"round these parts". Small space seats about 10 groups of folks. This is what we would call at home a greasy spoon in the most delicious way! Lots of options for breakfast and lunch! Amanda ordered the Chorizo omelette and I ordered the Chorizo breakfast burrito. Our waitress was very loud, happy, and bubbly. Country music on the speakers throughout the room. The chorizo and salsa was the star of our breakfast. We always ask, would we come back? I wouldn't make a special trip, however, if we were out this way, this would be our stop for sure! read more

I took my family and they were busy and were told it would be a twenty minute wait to seat us at their only large table they have. We were fine with that but then a booth opened up and we said we would take it and add two chairs at the end to accommodate us. We were yelled at and told no that they would not do that because of fire codes because of walk flow . We were in the corner against the wall . What walk flow? Nope just absolutely rude and unprofessional attitude towards the customer. Never has my wife ever been so upset and angry and the my two grandkids in there witnessing this crappy behavior by the waitress and owner! Absolutely disgusting behavior! A a terrible place to eat. Went 3 times, the wait staff is rude in a snotty, sarcastic way each time. I thought everyone deserves a second chance. No don't waste your time, gas or money on this sorry place. You look around it is dirty, they do not wipe the condiment bottles down and will pass from one table to another. When cleaning tables they will pick up the bottles and not wipe them down. Handle money and then handle food with out using a hand sink to wash hands. I have even been served with dirty utensils, and dishes, I sent them back. Once there was a waitress eating a plate of food while serving. Simply, gross and disgusting. As I said everyone deserves a second chance, I gave them three chances. This the worst place to eat at moon gate and the sad thing is it's the only restaurant there. What a joke completely unacceptable. This place brakes so many health code violations. So sad in this economy you would think people would value their job and put their best foot forward. We were immediately greeted by Dee she is the most beautiful soul and told us to sit where ever we liked. She was really the best server and was super tentative someone that actually seemed to enjoy there job. Now let me say I got the country fried steak and it was probably one of the best I've ever had. My fiancée got the steak fingers and that was delicious too. This place has been around for awhile and the cook has been doing this for a very long time and use to cook for Hieberts. And to my surprise as old as the place look and feels everything was super clean most places that look like that you would think everything would be super dirty. They refuse service to people with disabilities. I was not even allowed to sit down before a woman who claimed to be the owner said that she does not allow service animals. She didn't even try to hide it with another excuse about anything. Just straight up said we don't allow service animals. My husband and I eat here every Sunday. We love the small town, hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. Not only are the staff friendly, but so are the patrons. It's so nice to feel the disconnect from Cruces, even though you're just a few miles down the road. If you can imagine, I lived about five miles further out of Las Cruces than Moongate. Moongate Cafe was the closest restaurant to my house, so it makes sense that while I was growing up, my family were regulars. When I used to go, I always, always had to get the green chile cheeseburger with fries. They also make (made?) a number of Mexican combination plates that are really good. The thing that makes Moongate so memorable for me is the simplicity of the service and the food. They didn't do much, but what they did, they did very, very well. If you find yourself crusing down Hwy. 70, this is probably your best bet for good food. read more
