Firstly, genius move to have free public parking outside of downtown but still within walking distance. This limits the already congested downtown traffic and moves the cars to the outside area near the railroad. The downtown has plenty of decent and mediocre restaurants and is impressive as far as resort / touristy towns go; the area is generally clean and didn't have any camping or homeless activity. Overall, plenty of shopping to do and things to eat. Most of the shops are likely owned by the same corporation or company; they sell the exact same items but the store names are different. There is also a lot of what looks like migrant workers / temporary workers; as you imagine it will be quite costly to hire enough locals, you can only hope they get paid a decent wage.

Banff was very walkable. The downtown shops, restaurants & cafes are a few blocks with a train station & bus stop nearby. Downtown is a pedestrian walkway closed off to traffic. There are ethnic restaurants downtown with Irish, Mexican & Indian, a Chinese market ... Cows ice cream shop always had a line out the door. There is a visitor center downtown with maps & info. Banff is surrounded by large snow covered mountain ranges. The Bow River & lakes look turquoise & are fed by melted glaciers. There are overpasses allowing animals to travel above the main roads. We saw elk, young moose & squirrels. The summertime flowers were beautiful.

So the town of Banff is the principal base accommodations area for the world renowned Lake Louise just 40mins away. However, & please note - this is the little town that could. Banff is charming, hospitable & cozy. Great accommodations available, fantastic food options - make sure to try the Bison (Buffalo) offered at various venues - I'm biased in favour towards the Bison at 1888 Chop House! Take a walkabout the town, very clean streets, people are friendly, did not feel like I was trapped in a tourist hell hole! Worthy mentions in no particular order & very random ... Bear Street Tavern, The Bison, Bow River Falls, Cows, Cool as a Moose, Beaver Tails, 1888 Chop House + Rundle Bar + Stock Food & Drink + Waldhaus Restaurant & Pub all @ Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. If you've ever been to Whistler, BC well Banff has been described as - Whistler on steroids! Banff kinda actually has more to offer matter of fact. Besides who just doesn't love having to only pay one sales tax (Alberta) as opposed to two at Whistler, while out shopping or at the pub!?! Right!!? The whole surrounding area is world class supreme & a true nature lovers paradise! Banff is were you find the world famous Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel!!! Book your ticket, get here yesterday & check it for yourselves!!! What are you waiting for!?!

Copying another users review because it is spot on. Banff Park is wonderful but the town is looking for anyway possible to write a ticket. Paid for parking, didn't block alleyway by 1.5 meters as per parking bylaw, ticket for parking in no parking spot even though there was a parking in Banff.ca sign in this spot. Banff National Park is wonderful and breath taking. The actual Town of Banff municipality are fraudsters whom take advantage of visitors through their parking enforcement. They won't have any signs up, but will issue any and every citation regardless. Be very careful of where you park, the town is only looking to collect more revenue from you. Think about how small the town is, but they have at least 5 roaming 'enforcement vehicles' specifically for parking. The Municipal Enforcement Administrator is a scamming con artist, beware!

Everybody complains that Banff is too busy but just suck it up and go I promise that the tourists are not as bad as you expect and look at these photos. You probably won't find a cuter town anywhere in Canada. How many mountain towns do you know that actually were designed over 150 years ago specifically with the Main Street placed so it shows off the view of the best mountain in the neighborhood????? Check out these photos- doesn't this make you want to go there? It's not a coincidence that the amazing race Canada has been through this town already four times.

We came here on a whim to find a nice place to eat as we were on our way to Lake Louise. We walked around town to find a place to eat and my wife loves Italian, so we tried to walk in at about 6pm. Luckily for us, there was an open seat (reservation are highly recommended.. it was packed). We were greeted by the waiter who gave us the choice of sparkling or still water. Fancy schmancy. We got the still house water. The place was packed, full, and a bit loud, but also romantic given the atmosphere and the views. Good place to take a date, but not a good place if you wanted a private booth/moment. I ordered the seafood linguine, and my wife ordered the spicy rigatoni alla vodka. We also ordered the little gem caesar to share, and she also go the coffee martini for her drink. I got soda. The caesar came out and it was one of the best caesars I had. It was presented by having two baby heads of romaine lettuce covered with caesar dressing. Very tasty and creamy. Very very good! Next time, I am going to order one for just myself! Only eating one baby romaine head left me wanting more! After the salad, the pastas came out and the seafood linguine was remarkable! Presented as a bundle of linguini with seafood on the sides, all covered in white wine/clam sauce. One of THE BEST seafood linguines I have ever tried! My wife's spicy rigatoni was spicy and had a kick (I am Thai so take that for what it's worth). My wife thought it was a bit too spicy for her, but overall the dish was meh. Reminds me of the pasta alla vodka at Cheesecake Factory, but without the sausage. I do believe if there was an option to add sausage, the dish would've been 100x better. The dish just got bland the more you ate it. And because of this, I ended up eating the rigatoni, and my wife ate the linguini lol. Just kidding.. kinda. We shared our plates :) I highly recommend this place. The rigatoni was nothing special, but everything else was spectacular. We were even contemplating going back there on our drive home, but it opened at 4pm that day, and that was too late on our schedule to wait. Nevertheless, we'll be back again!

I must talk about this hidden, under the radar gem of a waterfall called...Silverton Falls!…read more Most visitors and tourists coming to Banff and the Lake Louise area pass this easy hiking trail to a triple cascading waterfall behind, in favor of much more popular Johnston Canyon Falls. But...do not sleep on Silverton Falls! During my 2nd visit to the Canadian Rockies this summer, I was looking for extra sights and attractions to explore upon and Silverton Falls perfectly fit the bill! Lets get to it!.... Unless you're specifically searching for it, Silverton Falls can be missed. It's located along Bow Valley Parkway 28 kilometers south of Lake Louise but just 6 kilometers north of Johnston Canyon. When driving, make a turn into the Rockbound Lake Trail Parking Lot. Yesterday when I came by, the parking was almost full with maybe 15 total spots available. I grabbed the last one, fortunately. Now, it's not just Silverton Falls that can be explored in this part of Banff NP. At the trailhead, you can also gain access to hikes for.... - Tower Lake - 7.5 km - Rockbound Lake - 8.4km Although I'm not familiar with those trails, the setting here is among a beautiful forest with green trees, really a calming and therapeutic walk among nature. And all it takes to arrive at Silverton Falls is just 0.9 kilometers! Granted, the last portion of the way is mostly uphill, still, it's overall very simple and a huge success to capture such a terrific looking waterfall without having to work hard and exert energy. My only drawback (if you could call it one) is the size of the overlook observation point. It's very small. So, with a few hikers here wanting to grab their best photos, people had to rotate around affording everyone an opportunity for their special moment. For instance, during my first view I grabbed photos for a few seconds. Next chance I got...I recorded videos. Then finally for my 3rd go-round, lol, I asked a stranger to take my picture, which at about 12pm was ideal having the sun reflecting brightly upon the falls. In total, I had 10 brief minutes to see Silverton Falls. Eventually there were just too many hikers coming along and the pathway at the peak is extremely narrow to fit a crowd. But, I got fulfilling enough time in before returning back towards the trailhead parking lot. Here are my lasting impressions.... For the few glimpses I got at the viewpoint, I was dazzled by 50 meters high Silverton Falls. And especially, not one person ever mentions it...even when I'm overhearing conversations with guests and park rangers at the Visitor Center. Granted, ya know, there are the prime highlights like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, etc...but...for a quick and convenient little side-trip, Silverton Falls is a winning attraction!

I didn't like that, I don't want some cheap sad looking salad, I'd rather just pay for what I want to eat. When I arrived 60% of the tables were empty at 1pm on Sunday yet you have to wait 20 minutes to be seated. I see someone else complained about this last year but nothing has changed. You get paper napkins at a this sit down restaurant. I couldn't taste any pesto in the fettuccine. The dish was mediocre, nothing special. My server was attentive. As I was walking to my table I saw a guy throwing up at his table and the hostess said he's a regular. Wait you know he does this and you seat him in the middle of the restaurant where everyone can watch and lose their appetite? I sat in the back on a high table next to the window and even though the blinds were down right next to me, the sun was still so hot on my face. You need to reapply your sunscreen before sitting there.
