Such good British food! The chicken and leek pie was fresh and hot with a great deal of chicken. The veggies on the side were perfect to mix in the sauce. The mash was perfect covered in gravy and a little salt and pepper. The bangers and mash were divine! I can't get over how good the sausages here are. The peas were big and good in the saucy mashed potatoes. The charcuterie was good but I would skip it next time, not enough crackers for my liking. The spotted dick was hot and fresh. My husband said it wasn't sweet enough but I thought it was perfect. Sweetened by the raisins and the warm custard on top. It wasn't very touristy on a Friday night at all. We enjoyed sitting on the back patio overlooking the River. It was a bit cold for a July evening with the breeze and water, so bring a sweater. I would love to come back and try more delicious dishes. read more

Town of Ramsgate was the best part of my (very good) visit to England. I ducked inside to take a short break from the rain and found myself surrounded by good food, wine and company for the next few hours. Great way to spend a Friday afternoon, rainy or otherwise. Excellent service too! read more

It's pubs like this that make you realise how lucky we are in Britain to walk past major historical landscape features, nay, drink at them, and not realise how old or how important they are. Thus named, because any further up the river, and traders would have had to pay the very expensive taxes which were imposed. And a lot of them came from Ramsgate apparently. So, that's the name. Straight up, they have a mean selection of ales. So if you like real ale, this pub is good. They have a beautifully, beautifully, located beer garden, which looks out over the Thames and some steps where they used to unload all the cargo. So that's rather lovely. And the whole pub is old-time and full of trinkets, memos and photos from the past. I didn't know Wordsworth went to school with on of the people who mutinied on The Bounty. That's the kind of thing you find out here. Landlord, overwhelmingly friendly and knowledgeable about his pub. And it's lovely that it's still standing, still in very good nick and still serving quality ales at really decent prices. So... I'm a fan, clearly. read more

Adorable, classic, London pub with good beer, cheap wine, and a quiet atmosphere. Great patio overlooking the Thames for the rare fair-weather day. Monday is quiz night (mostly British trivia, impossible for us). Not very touristy, and quiet enough for good conversation. They also have a wine deal where you buy two glasses and get the rest of the bottle free - I think that is Mondays but don't quote me. There are more vegetarian food options than most pubs, and they are all quite good. Chips are also good. Approx. 15 min. walk from tower tube station, and the 100 stops outside. Be sure to visit the Wapping Old Stairs before or after, and do a little reading on their history. Execution Dock's location is disputed, but most think it was also right here. read more

It really does not get much better than the Town of Ramsgate. At all. It's located ~10-15 minute walk East of Tower Hill. This really adds to its charm - The Town of Ramsgate such a short distance from central core of the global financial nervous system, but still feels as if it is located a world away. It's never really all that busy, but it attracts a steady stream of great folks - the banker from the City, locals, the aimless tourist. The food is just heavenly. Monday through Friday 12-4, the pub runs a special where if you buy one of their entrées or burgers, you get another for £1. A friend and I went and each got a MASSIVE double bean burger (which itself deserves a five star review), a big bowl of hand-cut chips and a pint. The total was only ~£15. The back deck is to die for. Go. Sit outside for hours. Watch the river boats. Be happy. The only drawback is that I live in North London, so the Town of Ramsgate can be kind of a trek. But it is definitely worth it! read more

The Town of Ramsgate is one of many London riverside pubs which claims to be "London's Oldest Riverside Pub". When I invent my time machine, I'm going to go back just to find out which one actually is the oldest.. and then order a pint there. But not to detract from the pub's rich history. It used to be called 'Red Cow', but takes its current name from the fishermen of Ramsgate who used to tie up their boats here, whilst waiting for Billingsgate Fish Market to open its doors. They also used to chain up prisoners in the pub's cellar, before taking them down Wapping Old Stairs to board the boat to Australia. That's all fine and dandy, but what about the modern day watering hole? Inside awaits a very traditional pub decor, complete with a pub garden, and a menu boasting a different food offer on most days. We went along for lunch, which was a '1 for 1' deal - buy one meal, get another for £1. I'm always weary of these kinds of deals, but oh how I was wrong. The food portions that came out were huge. Like, very huge. Considering our meals averaged at about £6 each, this was a total steal. I ordered the steak (medium rare, thank you very much) which unfortunately was very chewy and left me with quite the sore jaw - but it was meaty and sizeable, so not a total loss. And the chips. Oh, the chips. The chips at Town of Ramsgate are fantastic - definitely go for them. One of my work colleagues opted for a plate of nachos. Which turned out to be a bowl of nachos. A HUGE bowl of nachos. Enough to feed at least 6 people - that's how big the portions here were - definitely great value for money. Drink wise, the pub is well stocked with some great local ales, your usual lagers and a good selection of wines. All in all, Town of Ramsgate is definitely good for a lunch break, or a pint and a bite to eat in the evening, especially if it's warm out, and you can sneak into the pub garden. read more

This is a pub that if you are in the area I'd recommend popping in for at least one. The staff are always friendly and it has a feeling that the locals go here but not in a way that you feel you are unwelcome. The bar staff are always friendly and say bye when you leave which I always feel is a nice thing to do. The pub is quite narrow but long so there isn't the most amount of seating but there is a beer garden out back that looks out on to the river which on a summer's day I imagine is nice view. They serve a few ales, such as Doom Bar and Youngs, they also have a large selections of bottled beer and the like. The pub itself is steeped in history, it is supposedly the oldest pub on the River Thames, there should probably be more things inside to read about it all but the website shows it all, which just adds to the charm of the place. Not had any food here, but the food I've seen all looked very nice and is served by a dumbwaiter which always makes it feel quaint. read more

We were walking along and came across this gem. A good selection of beers. The food was excellent. My friend had the fish and chips. The fish was crisp and not greasy. I had the homemade sausages and Yorkshire pudding. The sausages were flavorful and cooked perfectly. It was my first time having yorkshire pudding. The gravy made the pudding. This is a really lovely pub with an intimate beer garden and plenty of history Firstly the important stuffthe drinks. Solid selection of alestasting goodjob done. They have a few familiar choices but also served Exmoor gold, which I had not enjoyed before (which is a pity as it's rather nice). Apart from that I guess they have a standard selection of wines and lagers. The beer garden, while small has a rather pleasant feel to it. I prefer it to a large sprawling garden but obviously this means it's harder to bag a spot. If you can get a table out here than hang on to it. Looks like they light it a bit after dark too. Now the history. Firstly people who had been press ganged into serving on ships to the colonies (and convicts too) were held here prior to embarking. It also has a link to the famous hanging judge, Judge Jeffries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Jeffreys,_1st_Baron_Jeffreys) who it is rumoured was captured in the alley outside. This is just one story however. My only gripe with the pub is the name, which I personally find rather boring. I'm not sure if it comes with the gentrification of the area but I prefer the older name, The Red Cowapparently named after a fierce red headed barmaid. read more

A nice, cozy little neighborhood pub that serves very good food. I'm most often here when I find myself craving pie and mash, as they have a great steak and ale pie. Out back, there's a very small south-facing deck, which can be a bit chilly when it's windy and in the shade, but is perfect when the sun shines on it. read more

Cozy little place in the heart of old London docks, beer garden backs right onto the Thames. definately a locals pub, which becomes obvious on monday evenings when non regulars are 'asked' to make space for the weekly pub quiz. Dating back to at least the C14th and re-named at least 4 times - The Hostel - Prince of Denmark - The Steps - Town of Ramsgate, The present name is taken from a Thames Lighter owned by a previous landlord. Wall to wall carpetted and very snug with a very long bar serving a very good pint of Pride and guest beers but only one cider. Food is okay but can take a while to arrive - I recommend the bangers and mash ! read more

This pub is why I love London so much. A hidden gem, in the peaceful and full of history related Wapping. Just east of the Tower of London is a tourist-shy area, where you can escape a busy evening rush hour or simply to enjoy a lovely evening. The Town of Ramsgate is really friendly, good (selection of) food and a fine selection of affordable drinks. A true Londoners pub. Perched on top the Thames, it is a traditional, warm, relaxing, neighborhood place. You will find dogs, kids, guys that have been mates for the last 45 years, 20-somethings in for a laugh and a pint, a person with a book, a quite couple in the corner, and more. I forgot why I don't like pubs it had been so long since I went to one. I am a daily patron of restaurants and food and beverage establishments of all kinds, but the pub fell off my frequently attended list some time ago. I stopped drinking beer for one but yesterday I was reminded of the other reasons: service and personalities. Both lack horribly at The Town of Ramsgate. I expect to stand at the bar to order and all that, it's just that I can't stand such crap horrible personalities running such establishments as if they were trade union leaders with some larger-than-life agenda. Standing at a bar some while waiting to be waited on is excruciating when staff dilly dally around chatting to those that are handing over their cash with all the time in the world. Me not even being acknowledged left me escorting my family out to another establishment. Pubs are great only when their staff understand good manners and good business ethics. Sadly this is rare and is possibly one reason why so many pubs close each week. I lament the closing of many but could care less if they've got nothing to offer but grumpy self righteous staff, stinky smells, unfriendliness, mediocrity and noise. read more
