Nice enough hotel with friendly staff, but the traffic noise is awful. Woke me up at 4:30.

Nocturnal - The latter was delicious

    Nocturnal

This place is very cool...very cool indeed…read more A rating of five stars, based on atmosphere alone, would be appropriate! Obviously the theme is richly macabre. The spirit of Edgar Allan Poe, and Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega version) would find themselves very much at home in Nocturnal! Fortunately, the appeal of this place goes well beyond its cool vibe. The coffee is great. It's potent. It more than satisfied my incessant desire for STRONG FLAVORS! The other drinks that I tried were excellent as well. I didn't try any pastries or other snacks, but I have to admit that they looked very tempting. At first I would have thought that this place seems a little out of place in downtown Monroe. But after coming here a few times, and checking out the very interesting crowd, I realize that I was mistaken. I'll definitely be back, and I'll bring the wife. She'll love it too. Five stars!!

Like I said.....a.....vibe......They were playing industrial rock music which is also a choice for 9 am. The building is neat. Exposed brick and the decorative touches give this place a New Orleans feel. I really enjoyed it. The coffee and service were both very good. I had a latte and it was quite smooth. I would definitely recommend it. You can add flavor for a small charge but I just had it plain. We also ordered a peanut butter explosion cookie. Wow was it rich and decadent. We couldn't finish it but I loved the peanut butter whip on top. So good! If I lived in the area I would be a regular. Highly recommended.

The breakfast buffet had a good variety of hot dishes and cold items like cereal, yogurt and fruit. I enjoyed their coffee, it's freshly ground. WiFi reception is good and they have enough outlets in the room. There is a small store next to the front desk, where you can buy water, snacks and laundry detergent. The hotel is far from anything, except the hotel next door. I used an Uber for the drive to Monroe to pick up a couple of gifts and it was further than expected. On laundry day, the front desk had no quarters and didn't offer any solutions. I decided to try the hotel next door and they suggested walking across the street to the gas station. After all that, the dryer stole the quarters I put in and asked for another 3.75. I finally got that problem resolved, but would not recommend doing laundry close to your check out time. Overall, the hotel is nice, it's an average Holiday Inn. This hotel would work well for groups, they have meeting rooms and an exercise room too. I found it a little expensive and a bit isolated, but it's a suitable place to stay if you're in the area.

Dear Owners, What a mixed bag of feelings I had when I…read moredined at your establishment tonight! First was WOW! What a cute place! Do we really have a "wine bar" with this kind of atmosphere downriver? I saw a picture of your establishment on a friend's Facebook page a while back, she told me about you and the pictures didn't lie, it is as cute, quaint and cozy as I had expected. I was fortunate enough to have a restaurant.com certificate so I could check you out! We were seated in a little alcove that felt cozy and private. We ordered a bottle of white wine. Our waitress delivered two glasses. She explained to us that she wanted to keep our bottle under refrigeration so it wouldn't get warm. As a pretty serious wine drinker, this isn't the way it's done. We want the excitement when our bottle arrives and the special feeling when the wine is opened for us. Teach your staff how to properly serve a wine, or don't call yourself a "wine bar." We asked for our bottle, and nursed it through the food. It did get warm, if you invest in those stainless steel or clay coolers your staff won't have to worry! Your waitress made a little mistake; she delivered the bread for us to another table even though we were next. She looked us in the eye and apologized. She is a keeper; you don't often find folks like that - except Downriver - the in your face honest type. This made a negative into a positive. And the bread! Seriously, home made, with lots of warm crispy outside and soft insides and a sauce with a little extra zing on the finish! YUM! My little secret is that I have been gluten-free recently, not tonight, not with that bread on the table! The salads were gorgeous - homemade dressing, mixed greens and lovely. I can't help but wonder if a little cracked pepper offered for my salad would have added another nice flair? I like this too. It isn't an expensive thing to do and gives you that extra-special feel. Next was the hard part we waited a long time for our food. We were getting frustrated. Apparently, tonight was the first night of a new menu. My husband liked his Chicken Saltimbocca, but my swordfish was a bit over-cooked. My polenta was kind of watery. What did you do? Both proprietors came to the table, looked us in the eye and apologized. You shook our hands. You let me make suggestions and took me seriously. You are "salt of the earth" people and you WILL succeed. Our meals were comped due to the extenuating circumstances. This is what I like about Downriver; the no-nonsense approach of its people. I have seen enough of your restaurant that I will recommend it, I will be back, and I will not be disappointed! I will also write another review, and I know it will be a star or two better. Folks will give your cute place a chance, and they won't be sorry! Sincerely, Lisa L.

Small boutique hotel in the town of Monroe. I came here for a business trip and chose to stay here…read moresince it was close to the office and still very comparable in price. Upon arriving, there's no one at check in. They leave your name and room key in an envelope at the front desk. I guess I'm not use to this, but it was late and I just wanted to get into my room. I had a room on the 2nd floor. It was great and very comfortable. Lots of space for 1 person. The room had a mini fridge that had several water bottles, sodas, fruit, yogurt. It was very accommodating that they provided that for their guest. One evening it was raining and I was caught in the rain.. my clothes were drenched and I decided to do laundry. It was very easy to use and I found it super convenient. I loved Hotel Sterling and will probably be back when I'm in town again.

We heard people later on that night coming and going, but never saw another soul. We had the curb-side room since my wife was on crutches. The parking is great and free. The service, while almost invisible is excellent. The rooms are outstanding. The price is reasonable. The in room refreshments are free. I only wish we could stay here more often. My one complaint has little to do with the hotel. Downtown Monroe isn't doing great and some of the shops and eateries nearest walking distance were closed. But it's Monroe. You can drive across town in 5 minutes.
