The Valentine's Day date needed to be a night out for a dinner and a movie. The wife wanted to go out to townies for dinner we had been here once before for dinner but it was quite awhile ago. When we sat down I grabbed a drink off there winter menu was defiantly just a little bit too much bourbon because that's all I tasted, but I'm not one to let a drink go to waste so I drank it. Then we ordered the werst bites which were pretty good just needed to be in the fryer about 30 mins longer because the cheese inside them wasn't done. Next came our entrees I ordered a the schnitzel and it was really good. Cooked pork to still be juicy, well done. Briefly visited this upscale Irish sports bar in downtown Wausau, Wisconsin. We left a nearby restaurant called tempura because space was a premium and they notified us that the wait would be an hour. My dear friend Marcus saved the entire trip with his suggestion to completely redirect the ship and valiantly lead the group to Townies, a 7 minute walk away. We were greeted immediate with a table in a large room with plenty of holiday cheer. Our waitress Rae, a local of Wausau, approached our table with a smile and understanding of our needs and lack of attention spans. After immediately offering to split our checks for us, a table of 11, I knew we had met a special professional. Rae catered to each of the critical points in the meal with precision and kindness. Drinks, appetizers, and full meals were delivered to our table correctly and quickly. The food was also of premium quality. My final bill was 40$ after a generous tip and included an alcoholic beverage, appetizer, and kitchen special. The kitchen special was a medley of shrimp, rice, and mixed vegetables, steamed and with a sauce bringing out spice and juice. It was more than a satisfying portion and Rae closed us out with ease and suggested several nearby nightlife options. Call me a Townie, but I love this fucking place. I have visited Townies on two occasions in the past, and while the restaurant has character and a promising menu, the food quality does not deliver. On my most recent visit, we tried the buffalo egg rolls (which other reviewers seems to love), the avocado salad, and the fish tacos. The egg rolls were not for me...I was not a fan of the cabbage and buffalo sauce combination, but I can see where others might enjoy it. My avocado salad was not fresh. The avocado was turning more than brown, and the rest of the ingredients seemed like hey had been sitting around for a long time. The fish tacos are decent, but were served on cold, nearly stale flour tortillas. Even heating the tortillas up would have vastly improved the taste and experience of this dish. read more

Over lunch, the place is flooded with natural light, but the dark floor and woodwork make it difficult to see initially. Easy to find a seat at most times; making this place a hidden gem. I think most people think this place is only a simple bar with simple food. They excel at high end bar food that is unique. For lunch recently I had the Lobster Mac & Cheese. Chunks of lobster folded into a rich mac & cheese were a perfect balance. Stopped here based on Yelp reviews after stopping at another restaurant that was packed. We were able to quickly get a table (either inside or outside) on a Friday night. They share space with Malarkey's Pub which had a long list of craft beers. I chose the Turkey Club with Townies Tots. The tots were definitely worth the extra charge as the side. Their menu has several things that I wish I could have tried - stuffed meatball, lobster mac n cheese, nachos. Their Sunday brunch menu also looked amazing. We sat outside which offered a nice view. The good: The food and atmosphere is top notch! Love that everything is made-from-scratch or sourced locally. I'm a big fan of the Amsterdam Sampler and the Townies Burger. The prices are very reasonable. I mean nothing exceeds $10! The not-so-good: The staff didn't seem to really know the drink selection/availability when I dined there. (I understand that you're new) The menu design doesn't match the grade of food and decor going on inside. This is not a bad place. Maybe the secret is eating outdoors. When we walked in, I was a little put off by the dark inside, which evoked "bar" more than dining. That's when we asked to be seated outside on a gorgeous summer day. The sidewalk seating can't be beat. Neither can the service. As an appetizer, we ordered the food staple for Wisconsin: fried cheese curds. They were good, but I'm not sure what the ranch dressing dusting did for them. I suppose they added some flavor, but these are cheese curds, what extra do they need? The Fish tacos were good, overall. The fish was a little watery, but the cilantro-lime cabbage and sriracha sauce were awesome. My friend had the grilled caprese flatbread, and we traded half so as to sample. The flatbread was pretty decent, although it could have used a bit more basil. I'd stop here again, at least in the summer, maybe not for the food but certainly for the outdoor seating. read more

I was in Wausau with a friend this weekend in need of nourishment. Our "go-to" Great Dane prime rib was out of the question; the place was packed! We decided to venture downtown for a little shopping and a meal which lead us to Townie's Grill. So to get into Townies, you need to enter through Malarkey Pub, which we found strange and not to our initial liking. The service was excellent; our waitress was quick, informative and attentive. The atmosphere was casual and fairly quiet, which we thought would not be the case having entered through the bar. The food was really good. The nachos with the beer cheese were excellent. We wanted grilled chicken instead of pork on the Nachos....no problem. We tried the rib eye steak and the Stuff meatball - both options were very tasty. I am not into fatty meat (like a rib eye) so that was not really appealing to me, but my friend said it was very tasty. The stuffed meatball was great (my meal). It comes with linguine and red sauce as well - very good. We will probably just avoid the Dane and come here next time in town. read more

Townie's has a cool, laid back atmosphere. It's a little dark. The seating by the window is prime -- especially during the Concert on the Squares during the summer. On warm days they open up the windows, so you can breathe in fresh air and enjoy views of the 400 block. They do have indoor and outdoor seating and it's one of the few places in Wausau that ALLOW DOGS OUTSIDE while you eat. Major plus. Their spinach and artichoke dip was impeccable, and they have a wide variety of menu options. Moderately pricey. Good local option. Good location. The restaurant is pretty, but who goes to a restaurant to admire the decor? I was meeting my friend there and yes, I had to wait for my friend, but did I have to wait for my server? After I was sat down I sat for 5 minutes and I'm sure it was only when the other server saw me sitting without any server she went to find him and he showed up. And he didn't mention his name either. The appetizers are way too expensive. Especially for 2 sausage looking burnt things and 2 burnt balls (Amsterdam Sampler) with barbeque sauce, a smidge of bitter coleslaw and mustard. A sampler is at least 3 types of appetizers - this thing should have been called the Amsterdam Burnt Duo. The soda/tea is too expensive also. $2.50? Get your money's worth and order more refills. My friend ordered the brat with fries and I ordered the Townie with grilled squash and a pickle spear. My friend commented that the fries were not that good and the sausage was a beer brat and all you could taste was the beer in the brat. The townie is a burger with a fried egg. The burger was ok - as in I've had tastier and better burgers. The grilled squash was too oily and needed salt. The pickle spear did not look fresh. It was not cold like a pickle should be. All in all the food is bland, mediocre and expensive. $7.99 for two burnt sausages, balls, $8.99 for burger and oily squash, and $2.50 for a soda. WAY too expensive for lunch. And not mention, there was a pesky fly flying around the whole entire time. Not going to go back. read more

I love the decor, the staff are friendly and do a great job, but the food kind of lets you down. I loved the open faced Reuben, it's inventive and has a great taste. The burgers are Meh. For a place that promotes their use of local food and producers, they are using a preformed patty for their burger. Mine was nothing special. For the price similar restaurants will run circles around Townies with the quality of their burgers. The fries are AWESOME. Twice fried pommes frites. The menu has a bunch of things I wanted to try but I went with the pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato chips. It was awesome. The bun was toasty, the coleslaw tasty and the bbq sauce is made locally. For dessert I shared a piece of the death by chocolate cheesecake. I am a fan of Malarkeys, and the staff, and owners as people. So, that might be a factor. The last time I was at Malarkeys, the meal I ate was sidways in an unacceptable way. Had a really bad experience there tonight with the waitress. First, she said they didn't have hot tea 'this time of night,' which was dinner time. Can that possibly be true? In 30+ years of dining all over the country, even the diviest dives have a couple tea bags floating around. And then, when asked what the vegetable of the day was, she said 'Italian Medley.' I asked, 'Oh, is it frozen, then? And she said 'Oh no, they chop it up here, and it has fancy purple carrots, etc. " It comes to the table... totally your standard cauli/broccoli/zucchini/ carrot frozen (likely microwaved) mix complete with fake butter taste, etc. It was totally crazy, and unnecessary. Why not just offer a salad? Why lie? Or, if you ran out of your fancy purple carrot salad, why not tell the customer? So, a big zero for customer service, Townies. And really, the food is middling. I doubt we'll return. And send some dang tea over from Ugly Mug if you really don't have any. read more

A group of us stopped in for breakfast on New Years day. We were starving and excited to sit down and eat before we headed back to Chicago. We were excited to get our bloody marys which were very good. When the food came out and I could not believe how terrible it was. The food was next to inedible. The only food that wasn't bad was the salad. The skillet was old dry cold potatoes covered in a cheese sauce and for some reason over a bed of spinach. The 'Stuffed French Toast' seemed to be from a box French Toast and was absolutely not stuffed. Food was terrible and service was poor. The service from him and the kitchen was very fast. This restaurant is marked as not kid friendly on yelp. There is a bar on one side, but they made sure everyone was accommodated and I would consider it kid friendly. The food was great! The Swiss mushroom burgers were excellent, juicy, fresh and very tasty. Definitely something to try. The side salads were also very fresh! The jerk chicken was great and well balanced between sweet and spicy. I would strongly recommend it. The Mac and Cheese was very cheesy and the cheese was warm and fresh. I had the fish tacos and they are really good. Problem is you walk away feeling a little hungry. For the prices I'd expect slightly larger portion sizes. Not huge. Just a little bigger is all. Ate lunch here with a friend a few weeks ago. I've never been to the bar side of the restaurant, though I have heard it is pretty popular in the area. Pretty solid lunch option in the downtown area. I had a BLT wrap and iced tea. The sandwich options can be served either as a traditional sandwich or on a wrap. I liked that the wrap included croutons - unconventional to a BLT, but added a nice crunch to the wrap. Fairly decently priced for a decent lunch (pretty generous serving of fries on the side and under $10 for lunch and a drink).
