This bicycle shop is right along the Erie Canal Trail and has a lot of bicycles and expertise to include a very detailed fitting process to the bicycle so you can enjoy your bicycle whether you buy it from them or not. I always hate seeing bicycle shop that do not go in depth to fit a person to a bike and the only thing they really want to do is just sell you a bike. A good fitting can take up to a couple of hours but you will be better off getting it right the first time. Highly recommend them read more

Rochester native returning home for a visit-Just tried renting bikes for our family of 6. Took less than a minute to fill out paperwork. Waited for 20 minutes for crew to fix tandem, kids bike to back of full-size bike. None of the staff could figure out how to secure the seat of the tandem bike seat. Ended up leaving as they could not properly or safely set up the bike(s). All kids were disappointed. Would have been nice if the staff had at least offered to accommodate us on another day or something for the inconvenience/lost time. Boo read more

I'm delayed in posting this -- bought my Trek in 2020 during the Great Bike Shortage of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Nevertheless, all feelings remain true, so here it is, albeit late: Kyle did a great job detailing what bikes were available, and what features each bike has -- he wasn't just thorough ... he had a pace which worked super well for me. Bit by bit, versus overwhelming me with info. Never did I feel like *he* was in a rush for the sale -- instead encouraged me to go home and think about it and research the Trek website, etc. But another thing that really stood out for me was how respectful he was. And this is what I mean: on the day we made the sale, I brought my husband in with me, and we were having some discussions about the purchase and spending money on certain accessories. Though *I* was consulting my husband and discussing not only which accessories but also how much to spend, Kyle continued to direct the discussion about the purchase to *me.* That really stood out to me, since I think it would have been easy for Kyle to just defer to my husband ... who is a far-more avid cyclist than I. I hope that makes sense. Just to say that in an era where many women still feel unheard and unseen, Kyle made sure that I was the one he had all final communications with about the sale, and that he directed all communications to me. All while making my husband feel welcomed in the shop and making conversations with him. All in all, Kyle is a very effective, low-key, no pressure, super respectful salesperson. Their new shop is super nice! I was there today & all of the employees are wearing masks and the store is clean. I stopped by because I was trying to change my tire to put my training tire on for the winter & they took care of it in two minutes AND showed me what to do so next time I'll know! I've been here a few times and I've always had quick and friendly service. If you have to drop off your bike they're pretty clear with communicating when it'll be ready for pickup. Had to have a bike services for someone else and could not get bike to store. They picked up and delivered bike (reasonable$$). All I knew was that the tire had a flat tire and had not been used for awhile. I simply asked them to do what was necessary. They could have charged me for a lot of work. They called and said tires were fine, needed only one tube and bike was in good shape. I was impressed with their honesty and will gladly return for future work. read more

These guys saved me! My pannier-laden bike rack had broken and threw off the alignment ofmy back brake, so I'd been riding for several miles with it rubbing the wheel and getting overheated. Towpath could not be closer to the bike path, so extremely convenient. Even though we arrived at the end of the day, the mechanic immediately set to work cooling my brakes and adjusting my alignment. Took maybe 15 minutes and then he wouldn't charge me - just said he was happy to allow me to continue the ride. I did get a sweet pair of bike gloves though:) read more

Saw this place while walking up the canal path. Being a road biker back home, I wanted to check it out. They appear to be a great local bike shop and able to address the needs of the road and mtn biker. Have a smaller selection of road bikes but a nice selection of mtn bikes and general cruisers. The best thing is that the rent bikes! This is a great idea in the warmer months and a great way to see the canal area. Staff was very friendly, suggested that we ride east on the path. About 7 miles down is the village of Fairport. Several pubs and restaurants that are all bike friendly. Your rental includes a helmet and ran about $20 for three hours. read more

I recently moved back to Rochester NY from Brooklyn and have been looking for a local bike shop to call home and get service without attitude. Thats something I found very difficult in the Rochester area. I visited many shops looking to be fitted, buy parts and so on. I stopped by many and many treated me like they didn't have the time to address my questions or concerns. Around that time, I had ran into Jeff one of the mechanics at Towpath at the Custom Brewcrafters Festival. He had said come into his shop Towpath and check them out and I did. After a few visits, getting professionally fitted and my bike readjusted, I felt that not only was the service top notch, but they took the time to answer my questions and gave answers that helped a beginner road cyclist. Im all about shopping local and supporting local. This shop has some of the friendliest and fastest service around. The minute you walk in the door, someone is willing to help you find what you need. I hardly spend more than five minutes in this shop because they're so on top of their game. Really well stocked with a good selection of high end equipment for the discerning rider. Prices are a hair higher than a couple other local shops but the stellar service makes it worth it. The downside? The service is so fast that I don't even have enough time to look around and consider upgrading to newer and fancier components. read more

This is a great bike shop- the manager Rob Schuler has now fitted me for two bikes a Trek Silque and just recently a Trek E-Bike. He is very attentive and knows his craft. The shop is located right on the Erie Canal path, making it super easy to test out a bike. My husband has purchased numerous bikes there as well and says the same thing. I had trouble with an older racing bike that repeatedly clicked and no one could fix. Towpath stripped down the bike found hard to find parts and rebuilt from scratch. Their stock consists of only high-priced gear, never anything more affordable, never anything marked down, the sales guy was an imbecile, and the service department was completely clueless. I have been there many times for rentals and I bought two Trek bikes for my sons. I have always had great service. I decided to bring in my road bike in for service. I paid for the full service of the bike which is several hundred dollars - when I picked it up a week later and got home I see nothing was done. Precision. That's what you want from a bike shop, and these guys deliver in spades. Their customer service is incredibly friendly, energetic and attentive and their repair service is 5-star, no-excuses, get-it-done-right-the-first-time, super precise... on every bike they work on, not just the expensive models for enthusiasts. They gave my $500 cruiser the same attention I watched them give another customer in the shop, who was there with a custom-built road bike that was getting tricked out with all new very expensive components. I never once felt like I was less important to them. I bought my bike here years ago, and it was a fantastic experience. Over the years, I've stopped in for a tune-up, new water bottle, etc. but nothing major-they've always made me feel like a part of their community, as a customer. Most recently, I went to see them after a failed repair job that had just been done by another bike shop up the road (closest repair shop when the bike's derailleur failed). I wasn't expecting much, but they turned the whole experience around for me. I was greeted with enthusiasm and genuine interest in helping me. They took the bike for a spin before making any assessments, and were very thorough and honest about what had been done wrong, and what had been done right, by the previous shop. They could have been snide about the other shop, but they weren't in any way... they were super professional. They took me inside and put the bike up immediately on a rack in the repair area and showed me, in detail, what was wrong with the installation the other shop had done, and how they would fix it. Less than a day later, I picked up my bike from Towpath and was shocked at the difference... it felt like a brand new bike. Not only did they make the repair right, they also made other quick adjustments to alleviate some issues that remained with the bike after it's recent service. They didn't have to do that, but they did, because they could, and felt it was the right thing to do... to return my bike to me in the best shape possible. That is the pride of workmanship I had been looking for with the first shop, and became frustrated I couldn't get. I know Towpath is "the pro shop" in town, but don't underestimate how great they are to work with if you're just an everyday cyclist who needs a tune-up or a new derailleur or just a nice basket. Every staff member here is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and takes the time to answer your questions and explain to you what your options are. You can tell the employees enjoy working at Towpath, and they pass that on to their customers, so the time and money you spend in their shop feels well spent. read more

I am a road cyclist and recently purchased a high-end road bike, pedals, and shoes. When I was researching bikes, I visited many shops on the east side of Rochester and as far north as Webster. I generally felt that most shops knew the products they were selling, but Towpath personnel knew about far more than what they carried. They were very professional and didn't talk bad about any bike. They just focused on the positive aspects of what they carried. What impressed me the most was the care that Towpath took in fitting the bike to me before they even let me out for a test ride (about 45 minutes). After I got back from the ride, based on my comments, they made further adjustments to the bike and sent me out again. Towpath has a camera and laser fitting system that is more sophisticated than anything I've seen in any other shop. In every other shop I visited, when test riding similar bikes, and in some cases the same bikes, the most fitting they did for my test rides was to adjust the seat height. No further adjustments were made based on my impressions after each ride. Once I did decide to buy my bike at Towpath, they spent at least another 90 minutes fine tuning the fit... Very impressive. I have also had a reason to talk directly with factory reps and I also got very positive feedback about Towpath. As an added plus, I've worked with a few of their mechanics (Dave and Chris) and they are top notch. All this is why I believe that Towpath Bike is a great shop worthy of my business. read more

I'll be the first to admit, I don't know much about bikes. My son and I were out for a ride on the canal when his seat became loose. We stopped here to see if they would tighten it up for us and the guy who helped us was so great we ended up buying a $400 bike from him. My son was in need of an upgrade anyway as he had really outgrown his bike, but we never planned on buying a bike that day. I ended up going back the next day to get a new saddle for my bike and they gave me a discount on it. This was a really great experience and will remind you why it's so great to shop with the small local guys instead of big box corporate America that doesn't care about the customer. Adore this bike shop. The staff is super-friendly, but not overly. Many bike shops have guys breathing down your neck, trying to sell you a bike, but not here. It feels like they are genuinely interested in getting you on the right bike. I bought my first nice bike here, and was helped all along the way by the owner. I ended up with a bike I adore, and was also hooked up with all the gear I needed for a touring trip. (They give you a discount on gear when you buy a bike.) They let you take the bikes for a "test drive" on the Canal path, which gives you a great idea how a variety of bikes will ride. Nothing is worse than a salesperson who seems like they have better things to do- especially when you are about to drop a lot of money on a bike. These guys are great, and the small-town vibe and superior expertise will get you a bike that is perfect for you. read more

Not a good experience. Took bike in for repair. They called me 2 days early to say it was done. I ride home tail reflector falls off. I think no big deal. Next ride I'm climbing a big hill. Suddenly feels like my gears slip. I hop off luckily safely. I see my wheel has come loose. Luckily a person in the neighborhood spots me and lends me tools. I fix the bike and ride down to complain. Shop sales guys deflect my complaint pointing to complexity of my shifting assembly as "weird". It took me and the good Samaritin 5 minutes to figure out the assembly. If you take your bike in for repairs. Double check their work. If you have a model they don't sell BEWARE. read more

While there they put the clips on and set it up for me. I prefer this bikeshop to others in town. It's cool how the shop is downstairs and you can watch the mechanics fixing bikes. Extremely disappointed all around. First Yelp post due to frustration from the customer experience. Used to road bike in college and decided to get back into it. I took my new wife here to buy his and her road bikes as a wedding present. I trusted sales staff. We spent well over $3K on two road bikes. As a recent post said, we didn't know any better and were sold on over-priced, below-average gear. After riding 4 times total and dealing with over 6 flat tires, I knew this wasn't right. When I took the bikes in, they told that the tires on the bikes were "cheap" and often "needed to be upgraded to prevent flats." Immediately I questioned why they didn't tell me this during the sales process. Can't remember if I specified that I wanted a dependable bike for my money, but I thought that is a given. Then I asked if they would work with me on getting new tires on the bikes. The story quickly changed and "the tires were a fine model." They looked at the tires... said they were in good shape, offered to change the tube, and sent me back out on the road. After biking for 5 minutes with the wife, I was on the side of the road once again. I have learned to do my own research and buy online or go somewhere else... Knowing just the basic information of what I needed and just having a very poor service experience down the road at another bike shop I can't say enough good about the service at Towpath. Sara helped me find the right shoes and cleats for me, the tech that helped out was patient and showed me exactly how to use this new equipment and KD at the register chimed in with other advice and some humor.
