I had a great experience at this location. I was in a bit of a time crunch and needed to get a roof box for my car and get it installed. I wish I remembered the name of the employee who educated me on crossbars and roof boxes. He was extremely helpful! He also installed the box to my car and made adjustments for me. When we realized the sunroof was blocked he then took the time to readjust the box. For all the time I took up he was still super nice. read more

Do you like to leave the house? Whether you're hiking, running, camping, skiing, or doing anything outside REI has you covered. I love going in the store and looking around, my wife as well. Our only gripe is that if we bought everything we loved about the place we'd be broke. That said, members do have access to the Garage Sale where used items are sold at a discount which has some good finds at times. Bonus is that it's right on the canal path and you can ride to or from the store or just go for a nice stroll. Better yet they have bike services available too, so if you need a tune up they have you covered. read more

If I could give this location 10 stars, I would. I became a member of the co-op back in 2018 when I was living short term in Boulder, CO. Fast forward to 2023 and living in Rochester, NY. This evening, I found a tick on my 10 month old pup, Skipper. First one of the season, right before I put his prevention on. I couldn't find my tick remover anywhere, so we booked it to REI because we knew they had them. We arrived 2 minutes after closing, doors locked. After googling and learning they are the only store in the area that carries the removers, I called and hoped someone would pick up. They did. They met me at the door and took cash from me after closing just so I could get Skipper taken care of quickly. That's above and beyond customer service. read more

I live in Seattle where we have the huge flagship REI store. That location is obviously better stocked, but I prefer shopping at this little store and do so when I visit my family. It's so much calmer, the customer service is better, and they still have a decent selection. Parking is also easy! Large, high end outdoor gear store located right next door to the ever popular Costco. Plenty of parking and seems to be staffed well. Tons of North Face, Patagonia, Osprey, Big Agnes and all the other known outdoor company labels available here. This location has a full size bike shop and just about anything that most casual to intermediate outdoorsy hiker/climber/kayaker could want. Tons of apparel of course, but lots of general gear too including tents, camping equipment, trekking poles, water filters, headlamps, backpacks (of all sizes) and on and on. They also carry some winter snow gear like snowshoes, skis, poles, boots, snowboards, goggles, gloves, etc. REI does run the occasion Garage Sale, which they advertise in advance, and at those sales you can buy used and returned gear (without a warranty) if you're looking to save some bucks. Most everything here is full priced, msrp dollars, so bring a fat wallet if you plan on gettin' jiggy on a normal shopping day. I find myself buying only the things I really, really need here in a pinch...mostly I like to go here and showroom to try things on and check out gear and play with stuff and then I just look online for a way, way better price (which I pretty much always find). You just won't find much on sale here on a normal shopping day and what they do mark down isn't usually marked down much. One cool thing about REI though is that they will give you a refund on almost everything for up to 1 year as long as you have your receipt...this includes used merchandise!!! So yeah, you could buy a pair of 400 dollar snowboard boots and a 600 dollar snowboard and use it for one season and then return it for a full refund, even after you shredded the gnar on it like a mamajama. They don't care. They'll ask why you're returning but you just tell them you didn't like it. Employees could care less. They'll just tag your return and put it out for sale at a discounted price at their next Garage Sale. Pretty cool policy and I've found the employees to be rad dudes/dudettes as well. read more

This REI layout just doesn't make sense to me. Also Why are they selling smart wool and puffer jackets in the middle of summer? And the staff kinda keep to themselves not super outgoing. It only has a handful of changing rooms so be ready for a wait during peak times. It's a bit smaller than other REIs I've been to. The selection is somewhat limited. I've been here numerous times and I love it every time. My first time here was at the REI in Denver Colorado huge store. I like that they have everything you are looking for. From camping, to fishing, hiking, backpacking, and skiing. The list can go on, they have a membership you can sign up for for free. And being a member you get money back which is pretty cool. I came to REI tonight to find a good pair of shoes that will help support myself feet. I had outstanding service, really helpful and friendly they found me the perfect shoes for work and I love them:) thanks for the great customer service experience. I'm so very pumped about having an REI in Rochester, finally. We've stepped up our hiking game and recently picked up a lot of backpacking gear. REI has been a go-to for all those things as the quality is top notch and the brands they feature are high quality. In the past, I ordered online from them so to have a store and people to talk to about what products to buy has been amazing. I recently picked up a few new backpack camping supplies, including a sweet lightweight camp chair by Helinox (it was on sale for $88!) and a rain cover for my Osprey pack. They also have great clothing options and I have a few things on my list to pick up for next season. I also opted to sign up for their membership as it's a co-op based program. You get a dividend cash back, special member-only offers like discounts on classes and sales and it's only $20! So worth it to me. I am looking forward to checking out their classes too! read more

Had to make an emergency stop here to replace our rooftop bike rack that broke while traveling. They were open fairly early (10am) on a Sunday. The young woman in the bicycle section was so friendly and helpful as was the cashier, Rebecca. They saved our trip because it was a huge stretch to store the bike in our car with all of our luggage and 2 dogs. Thank you!! Thanks to Andrew and REI for having available a master key ring for Thule products. I broke the only key for my 10+ year-old spare-tire bike rack, and did not have a key code. Andrew grabbed the ring of about 80 keys and came out to the parking lot with me to try them out. After about 50 keys, one of them worked! That is service! read more

REI coming to Rochester makes it feel like we live in a real urban center! If you're never been to REI, it is a high end outdoor retailer. You're going to find primarily hiking/ camping/ backpacking gear, and a full bike shop. There is a $20 coop membership you can get to give you lifetime access to cash back options and a yearly "yard sale" that involves returned or slightly damaged items. It seems like it's worth the price. REI is high end retail, but that's not all. We recently attended a women's backpacking class taught by Abby. The class was a free one hour session, of which they have several, the schedule is online. The class was great and gave us the overview of backpacking (which we obviously weren't ready for!). It also seemed like a great place to meet like minded people. REI is well worth the trip. I'm headed there to make my Christmas list! read more

Very nice looking store, helpful staff but expensive items. It is like the Nordstrom of outdoor stores, but you get what you pay for. I didn't leave empty handed though, I bought some budget items and a membership so I could go home with something. Hopefully, the more people from Buffalo that buy memberships, the sooner they'll open in the Northtown Plaza or One Seneca, as has been rumored. MUCH better store to visit than Cabela's, in my opinion. Worth the trip if you know what you're getting. read more

REI is similar to any outdoor sporting goods store. They are newer to the Greater Rochester area, but are a well established company known elsewhere. While price comparing Northface backpacks online REI came up with having the specific backpack that we were searching for in stock. We decided to stop by and inspect the goods ourselves. We were promptly greeted upon entering and then asked if we needed assistance. We found our way to the merchandise and then checked out the backpack. Unfortunately, the sale price wasn't marked. Again another sales person approached us and asked if we needed assistance. For the third and final time, on our way to the register, the manager walked by and made a comment about the backpack. The aggressive overkill / or monitoring of customers is seriously out of control here. For that reason alone, I have to deduct two stars. During our visit there were very few other patrons in REI and this seems to be the normal observation based on the cars in the lot when we frequent the nearby Costco each week. Perhaps this is the reasoning behind the over aggressive sales people. After ringing up the backpack the sale price was correct and we were offered the opportunity to enroll as a co-op member for a fee. I am willing to give REI another chance, if the price is right, but this will not likely be my first stop on the circuit. read more

Many of us have been waiting patiently for an REI to be built around here. Once you live near one or even visit one in another city, nothing compares. If you aren't familiar with REI, a couple items to know: 1) No one ever said they are cheap. Their prices run similar as other stores for the name brands. Try to wait for sales, or: 2) Get the coop membership- you get 10% back on regularly priced items, paid out once a year. 3) They invest a lot in training their employees. Are you going to know things about your sport that the employees won't? Sure. But the employees get a lot of training in the department they work in so they have have lots of tips and considerations that might be helpful to newbs. Other random things: They have outdoor classes (i.e. fire building, backpacking, etc.), they are a pretty cool company over all (donate a lot of money to environmental/stewardship), and the customer service is great (also great return policy). About this store in particular-- it is nice. Its big and spacious and bright, but trying to find things seemed a little confusing to me (but they have a great selection of stuff, so they have put put it all out on the floor some how). They don't have rental equipment like some other locations do. I have spoken to some of the staff that have moved from other REI locations/cities and they all seem really nice. Plan to spend a little more time in the store than you anticipated, there is a lot to see. read more

Shopped for hiking shoes/trail runners for me and my fiancée. We got in right at opening time and Gina listened and helped figure out our needs while we tried almost 20 pairs between the two of us until we found the perfect fit. She checked in frequently and adapted to what a liked and didn't like, and even proactively found things in the back that she thought could work for me based on how I was responding to the pairs I tried - it was an extremely friendly, welcoming, and helpful customer experience.
