This store got the vibe of Mandarake. It sells the typical blind boxes like Sonny angel, smiski, and some series from Re-ment. It also has toys, accessories and plushies of other Japanese characters, like Sanrio characters, Doraemon and Shin-chan. Downstairs has more figures but nothing unique. All Smiskis were sold out when I visited. There are some Sonny angels. Merchandises are pricey comparing to similar stores (and much more expensive comparing to Japan). read more

They had everything from vintage toys/collectors items to modern ones - Godzilla to Star Trek to Sanrio ! Sonny Angels aren't particularly a selection you'll find a lot of but they do always have them in stock. The Bear Bricks were the most impressionable collection of value that I was impressed by. Toy Tokyo is filled with toys from various corners of pop culture from Star Wars to superheroes to anime and more. the street level floor is packed from floor to ceiling with small boxed items to much larger items on display to more valuable ones in glass cabinets. the below street level floor is filled with anime-centric collectibles and toys. definitely can find more unique items for those who are hard to shop for...BUT you'll pay the price as items here are priced fairly aggressively...then again, you're buying things on the spot versus eBay or other online platforms where you have to deal with scammers, having an items being shipped, etc. all in all i like this store for finding gift items for people who love fairly nerdy pop culture. the staff are friendly enough and the store is neatly organized though it's interior can be overwhelming as there is so much to go through if you don't have a specificity item in mind. read more

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Toy Tokyo. The missus collects Re-Ment food models (the Petit Sample line in particular), while I collect F-Toys trade models. Every time me and the missus hits the east village for Okonomiyaki we usually stroll down 2nd Avenue, and whenever we roll past 5th street we will stop in. Either we: A) Spot new Re-Ment models and drop a few dollars Or B) No new Re-Ment shows up, and we leave empty handed. For those of you bitching about pricing...rent in the East village always go up, and as the old saying goes, "kids gotta eat". If you hit places like Image Anime in midtown for your Gunpla you are playing at least a 30% markup. The Re-ment models are 700 yen each if you pick it off the shelf at a kombini like Lawsons or Circle-K back in Japan. You can definitely buy online via sites like 1999, HLJ, or eBay, sometimes at a slight discount or around retail pricing. The only difference is that you'll have to pay the shipping and have the patience to wait. Paying 80 dollars (including shipping) for a set of Re-ment models from Hong Kong seems like a good idea, assuming that you want the entire set. If you want a certain item and it's sold out, you can always try your hand at secondary markets like Yahoo Auctions JP, and use a 3rd party bidding service like Buyee - I got some trade models, Tomicas, Plarail trains and capsule toy sets this way, and often at a decent price. This goes for everything on the glass shelves at Toy Tokyo - there are many more toy vendors in Japan who are willing to deal, small packet shipping via EMS is not that expensive, and it's just your ability to hustle. So why still go to Toy Tokyo? The same reason why you go to the mall even when Amazon.com exists - you want to see toys in person, and you want some now. Convenience and immediate availability comes at a price, and the price is that mark-up. That's the reason why we peel a Hamilton or 2 from my wallet whenever the Re-Ment sets look promising. The willingness also come with local market knowledge...Mitsuwa charges 13 bucks for the same item, Little Japan charges 16, and both are in New Jersey. Teso Life or Sunrise Mart doesn't even carry them, so in terms of limited competition, Toy Tokyo wins on pricing and availability. However, this does not address the fact that beyond the Re-Ment and the stuff on the shelves, Toy Tokyo doesn't have much variety...there are plenty of interesting trade models and toys available from Japan, and they are barely scratching the surface. Why sell a little Bandai bus model from Japan or a F-Toys Samurai sword set when F-Toys have a nice Acura NSX or Nissan GTR trade model set (13 bucks at Teso Life and Mitsuwa?!) Or maybe a figurine or an airliner...but nope, real narrow focus, and not much variety. I would rather bitch about them taking too much of my money, then calling their wares uninspiring...because they are. So yeah, I love it when they have new Re-Ment, but I hate it when they got nothing else to interest me. Fix this, Toy Tokyo. read more

tldr: nice selection of products-- ranging from anime figures to star trek-- chances are if you're looking for it, they've got it. place is small and awfully cramped, especially around the blind box are prices are a bit on the higher side (as per usual with these types of stores, nothing unusual) , but if you hate the wait of shipping and whatnot, it's tolerable. 1st floor is the one with all the blind boxes, vintage toys, novelty toys, etc. the lower floor is the one with all the anime themed stuff (though the 1st floor did have some shfiguarts locked behind glass) and a bunch of funko pops. fyi no sonny angels at the time I visited haha read more

When I was a kid visiting the city I was reasonably interested in getting toys and this is where my brother recommended I visit. Even without buying anything their selection was immense and had many figures that were niche and hard to come buy. Fast forward to being an adult, I still stop by on my visits to NYC eager to find another treat to display on my shelves. When one of your kids gets obsessed with anime (thanks Netflix!) you surprise him with a visit here. From the outside it didn't look like much, I won't lie. But as soon as you walk in... it's damn impressive. Now I don't know my Saitama from my Goku but this place seems to have pretty much a little bit of everything. From the expected (Star Wars - including a great collectable of IG88 - the coolest bounty hunter there is [sorry Boba, you're a close second], Godzilla, various Marvel comic/movie tie-in toys) to the unexpected (Clockwork Orange, Beastie Boys 18" dolls inside a sardine can, busts of rappers that have passed away) to the downright bizarre (demented versions of cereal mascots like a fat Tony the Tiger and diabetic Toucan Sam). The pricing is a bit on the evil side (yes - this is NYC, yes - a lot of this is meant to be collector items and not stuff for people to actually play with) and while my anime-loving-kid left happy with his purchase (a really cool item from the manga 'One Piece')- he'd want me to mention he was bummed they didn't have an entire section dedicated to Japanese gum and candy. And the crew behind the counter are EXACTLY what you expect and want... a mix of snark and wisdom that's equal parts Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino. read more

We were so excited to go here. Unfortunately, it took us an hour to get here, it was 10 min left till closing, but we were excited we made it. We knew exactly what we wanted for a quick purchase since my friend was already there an hour prior confirming that they had it, but they did not let us in the store. They slammed the door on us as we were about to open it, and didn't even let me explain the situation. They closed the outside gate at 6:55. Three guys that work there screamed at me outside the gate when I was voicing the frustration that they didn't let us in 10 min till close. They were extremely rude, had no empathy, and called us "entitled", and that we were "embarrassing", and that it was "just a toy." I was shocked at the words coming out of their mouth. The bullying of an upset costumer was unnecessarily cruel. They tried to shame me when all I did was go to their store during stated business hours. Their reason for closing early they said was because they wanted to enjoy their weekend and that they deserve to do so. While I don't have an issue with enjoying the weekend, I have an issue that it was done before the stated time. The time they took to explain this to me was longer than the amount of time it could've taken to actually purchase the product. It wasn't the toy that we were upset about, it was the principle that it says online that it is open till 7PM. They should adjust the store hours to 6:30PM if they aren't going to let anyone in after that. They were not apologetic and did not see that there is anything wrong with this discrepancy. They still continued to shout at us as we walked away. It is not ok to treat people this way. These workers are not Japanese. It is upsetting as an actual Japanese person that these are the kind of people that run a store called "Toy Tokyo." Shame on them. read more

I finally feel comfortable coming here again after I found out that unpleasant man David doesn't work there anymore. He used to follow me around the store showing me pictures on his phone with celebrities like he was some big shot (you're working retail?) and asking me inappropriate questions with his awful breath. Docking one star because I don't understand why they didn't fire him sooner after multiple complaints. It's been years I stopped going and I was pleasantly surprised and happy to see that they had a very hearty selection of blind boxes from Japan instead of just the American ones. The lady employee was very kind and helpful when I asked for suggestions for my son. I left feeling happy and my son loved his toys. There is a wide range of toys, figures, etc. But most of them are random action figures and I only seen about 3 or so anime types there - Demon slayer , pokemon , and dbz/Naruto. It was meh to be honest expected way more anime focus since the name is Toy Tokyo not Collectibles or something along those lines... expected Death note , Steins gate, you know more anime not just the American main stream stuff. Ended up just getting small Pokémon figure which was reasonably priced (7$) And the staff were nice as well. A pop culture lover's dream. I've been to Toy Tokyo a couple times with a friend. He collects pop and this place has a lot to offer. It boasts two floors of pop culture collectibles - from blind boxes, to figures, to stuffed toys, and the whole downstairs is filled with Funko Pops. I feel like every single time I visit I never get bored because there is just soooo much to look at. The prices are pretty good. I don't really know much about collectibles so I don't know the price ranges but a lot of things are affordable. A friend recently saw a figure he really wants and they even sell it for a lower price than he's found anywhere else. They also buy finished collections (Funko) but all that has to be done through email. The communication needs a little work (or maybe a lot) so be patient when it comes to getting responses. The customer service when you're in store though is top notch. Definitely work a look see if you're into collecting or just want anime/pop culture related things! read more

If you are a toy connoisseur, you'll really dig this place. I can't even begin to describe have the stock they have here, but it's quite a selection of new and vintage toys from all around the globe. They have a website where you can search their stock, so I'd suggest you visit it to see if there's something specific on your list. One of the things I love most is that it feels like a museum when you come into the store. The unpackaged toys are lined up in locked display cabinets and the walls are stacked to the ceiling with shelves of boxes. Most notably for myself, as a casual collector of Funko Pops, the entire basement is lined with hundreds of options, from brand new lines, to collector editions, and Comic-Con limited releases. There's even a while section that includes Pops that are not for sale! Namely one-of-a-kind prototypes and models and other unique editions. Lastly, I will mention that for a store in the East Village, the prices are very reasonable. Next time I'm in town I will leave more space in my luggage to take a few home! read more

Although I am all grown up, I can't deny the fact that I still have a soft spot of nostalgia for cute toys. I always have, always will. I was in Japan many years ago, and I swear I wanted to buy every little cute thing I've spotted but Japan is not exactly the country where you can buy much (or anything, in fact) for $1. There are some things that aren't exclusive to the US and it's hard to find stores that sell a large assortment of Japanese toys here...until I discovered Toy Tokyo. Every time I step in here, my heart melts more and more. Very reasonably priced items and they have almost every cartoon character souvenir you can think of. (Psst..they also have Angry Birds plushes) Yes, I've never left Japan! I am obsessed with Sanrio characters so every time I see every Pochacco, My Melody, Chococat, Cinamoroll, especially Hello Kitty item, whether it's a lunch box or stickers, I get a little delirious. Lots of kawaii, anime, Japanese monster collectibles inside for pretty reasonable prices, the fact that they're imported straight from Japan. They also have some toy vending machines, which is very popular in Asia, that are worth every cent! read more
