Toy Vault is a nice nostalgia trip. Funko Pops, baseball cards, action figures it's a nice trip back to childhood/early teens and even offers things for today's youth. I'm past the point in my life where they have anything that really interests me, but for when my grand niece and nephew get older I'm sure I'd be stopping here for something. The prices while on the higher side, are not absurd, and there's a nice variety. Even if you're not buying anything, its a nice to visit and browse and bring back some memories from yesteryear. read more

Have you ever shopped for gifts for someone you are just not sure what to get? That's how I ended up at the Toy Vault. An employee greeted us after we'd been looking for a bit and I told them my dilemma. Gave them a vague idea of what I knew they might like, ages and other misc. info. They told me about some of the items they sell. Showed me a few of the items I thought might work and they had something quirky that I thought would make a good gift. I also picked up a few other items and found something else for another person that I'll look into another time. So all in all, it was a successful shopping experience. Really appreciate the help! They have so many Pops! An entire back corner is loaded with them! Lots of cards (Pokémon and other games), soft toys, console games, board games, masks, action figures, anime. All sales are FINAL here, so be sure you want it! I definitely did not 'shop around' for the best price, so I have no idea if the items I purchased were less expensive else where, but the customer service was not at all pushy and actually very helpful. The store is definitely for things that are a bit out of the norm, so not for everyone. Thankfully it worked out for me. read more

We've shopped here quite a bit with our 11-year-old son, and it's a fun little "museum" of nostalgia. However, we made the mistake of contacting the owner, Dan Mayer, about selling a collection of sought-after 80s and 90s toys. He requested photos, which we gladly sent, and then he became a bit more coy, and requested we drive everything to his warehouse to be inspected. We trucked everything to his warehouse, and it suddenly turned into a very sociopathic haggling game. He helped carry everything to an "inspection table," but then without even looking at anything, he demanded we open the floor with a starting price, and then things just got uncomfortable (and slightly combative) from there. After we suggested a reasonable number, he pretended to look at everything, then declined the deal completely; and then he backtracked and low-balled us to reset the conversation -- typical dialogue you'd have with a sleazy used car salesman. Eventually, his final offer was as low-ball as it gets, but after half an hour of dealing with this unlikeable little man, we settled, primarily to avoid re-packing our car. Naturally, this was all part of the scheme, especially from what I've read in other reviews and on Reddit. My wife and I had started the day excited to let go of my old childhood toys and give them a new home, but this dumpy man with a slimy demeanor and wet fish handshake sucked all the joy from the entire experience. He's akin to the greedy collector from Toy Story 2. So in the end, we hand-delivered our collectibles to this guy free of any shipping charge, only to be swindled with some absurd haggling game that he's been practicing since 1990. Luckily, the toys were a very minor portion of our collection, and we've decided to donate the remainder to a good cause, rather than let this weasel profit from it. (And financially speaking, you'll probably make out better donating toys for a tax receipt than you would selling to this guy.) read more

A lonely store A survivor. One of the very last stores in the almost deserted and spooky Rhode Island Mall. I don't know how they stay open, I've never seen another person in the store. In fact I hardly see anyone else in the mall, except for the zombie walkers. The store itself is pretty cool if you like comic book stuff. Tons of action figures form Star Trek, Stars Wars and other nerdy movies. Cool figurines of Hobbits, Klingons and various monsters. Lots and lots of comic books and trading cards and whole boxes of old comic books for 7 dollars. Most of them I never heard of. Also some graphic novels and some sport memorabilia. If nothing else you have to admire this store for it's perseverance in staying when most of the other stores in this tomb called Rhode Island Mall have long since jump ship. I guess this place is great if you're into retro toys. If you're like me and you want a good store for Table Top Gaming, then look elsewhere. The selection at this location is poor, and does not compare to it's "Satellite location" that was up the road until it recently closed. In addition to the small selection, all the games are up on the shelves behind the counter. So if you want to look at a number of games, you gotta rely on the employees to grab them for you. If they're tied up with other customers, then you gotta wait. If there are a number of games you want to look at, then you're the one tying up the other customers. I was told during the clearance sale at the other Greenwich Ave Game location that they would make room for more games at the Mall store. I am not entirely sure how it's possible when the store is already busting at the seams with other items. Unless they plan on moving into a larger store, then I don't see how they will be able to target the table top gamers. I was also told during the clearance sale of the Greenwich Ave store that I could also visit the store in CT. I've visited that location and their selection is on par with the Warwick Mall store. Why would I go to that store when I will pass a much better gaming store (Citadel Game Cellar) that has one of the largest selections of games in New England? I bought a 2007 original series Star Trek communicator listed as "collectible" and in "new condition". Guess what? It arrived not working and with corroded batteries. I've made four attempts to contact them, allowing plenty of time between attempts not to be unreasonably impatient. Guess what? Crickets, nothing, notta, ZERO. Absolutely putrid establishment, entire store went down the toilet. I've been going to the toy vault here and there for about 12 years. Overall the workers have always been soulless and unhappy to an extent, but have never given me an issue. I went in there yesterday for the first time in a bit, received no greeting, but was asked if needed help with anything fairly quickly while looking around. I proceed to look around for about another 30 seconds after that and notice all 3 workers keeping a massive eye on me and inching towards me every time I move towards something else. I go back to the atrociously poor selection of retro games video games in the front, and all 3 workers are circled around me within seconds. The biggest gorilla asks if I need help with anything, after he's noticed I've already been asked moments ago, with a suggestive look and I say I'm still just looking around thank you. I continue looking and none of them move an inch and try and act nonchalant. I literally was treated like a criminal for looking around and having odd body language while just trying to enjoy my experience shopping at a retro store. On top of that I'm 6 foot 130 pounds and wearing a sonic t shirt with sweatpants and slides, no bag of any sort. Even if I did want to, I literally couldn't get away with stealing anything without it sticking out like a sore thumb. I understand precautions need to be taken but man that shit was just ridiculous. Invest in an alarm system with all the money you profit from your overpriced items instead of harassing loyal customers. On top of that the selection of video games is horrific and the prices on literally every item are absurd. ( Example: actually saw an etb for 70$ there and went to Walmart the same day and saw the same one for 30$)You'll never be getting my business again. I only shopped here for my kids who like Hot Wheels and Star Wars but the staff is usually pretty rude. My son had $500 in his wallet to buy something and asked to see something on the top shelf and the guy was SO put out that he had to get a step stool. Either don't put stuff on the top shelf or get a new job! We let him grumble and get the toy down bu the money stayed in my son's wallet and he bought it somewhere else. Great selection. High prices overall, (but is the case for most collectibles these days & varies). But if you're looking for older collectibles and toys that are harder to find, then this is the place. Unique and fun every time I've been so far. Plus, they periodically have a warehouse sale. I am a long time Pokémon collector and i love seeing people get cards for their kids but the way this small chain price gouges people is UNREAL! and UNFAIR!. I have been to most locations and the customer service seems fine its the prices that will kill you before the mall food will. $114+tax for most newer Jap Pokémon Booster boxes that should be selling for max of 70-80$. Also the single cards there have are as bad as shots at a bar... easy 150% markup, and I don't wanna hear "oh Bob don't shop there". Trust me I don't and wont. First i must give credit to this store for surviving in such bad economic toilet as the mall or Rhode Island for that fact . I also must give this store credit for having a great selection in many types of collectibles . The credit stops here when owner , management , and staff do not appreciate such good fortune . I tend to treat this place more like a museum that a toy store. People mostly go in there checking out all the old toys they use to own, look at the price and tell themselves that there is no point to ever owning it again; unless your a diehard Collector. I like to go there and buy some of the old collectable cards still new in package as joke gifts for people. Other than that a lot of the newer stuff can be just as expensive as the old. And in response to other reviews the workers there are pretty cold and just as much zombies as the people who walk the mall. I would just like to say this place is now located in the Warwick Mall and I went in there to look around and it was an overall pleasant experience. I have had conversations with multiple employees about comics and about what types of unique toys would be good for my 6 year old brother. I do not have anything of the sort to sell to them but I wonder if reviewers remember that collectibles prices surely go up and down depending on what's popular, what's not, what's being rebooted in a new movie, what has a new cartoon out, what used to be big but has since been forgotten, etc. Also you can buy anything under the sun for cheaper on eBay, not just the type of stuff the Toy Vault Inc sells. read more

I used to go here for my weekly fix of Magic cards. They have a great selection of cards, collectibles, and video game memorabilia that you probably won't find anywhere else. It's always fun to go in with a friend and say "Oh wow! Remember that?" at something you loved years ago. It's not just a vault for toys as the name suggests, but a vault for memories as well. Unfortunately, that's where the pleasure ends. Their prices vary greatly. Most of their video game-related items are good bargains. But their asking price for many of the action figures and play sets range from "a bit much" to "forget it." Cards and comic books rest somewhere in the middle. It's unpredictable, and that Batman figure you have your eye on will probably be $100 cheaper on Ebay. Toy Vault's biggest downfall is their customer service, which is nearly non-existant. No eye contact, no recognition, no enthusiasm, no patience. Every time I shop here, I feel more like I was in their way or wasting their time than a potential sale. What few employees they have seem easily-irritated and impolite, especially by customers who don't know what they want immediately. It's very discomforting, especially for shoppers who are not hobby enthusiasts. It's just as bad, if not worse, at the new Warwick Mall location. The Emerald Square location has slightly nicer employees, but still follows this same general trend. Toy Vault is worth a look if you want to bring back a few memories. Great selection all sorts of neat toys and vintage stuff to window shop at. I remember when this used to be Tilt arcade, it was the place to be. It's still a cool place but plan to spend $50-120 for the justice league figurines. I bought an Umbreon plushie for the sake of adding it to my collection back home and was easy to fit in my carryon because I packed light. read more

I have not visited the store but have had dealings with Dan Mayer. We had a huge collection of toys and collectibles that we wanted to sell. He said he was interested and would come up to NH to pick them up. He asked us to photograph everything and send him the pics. We did. And we also told him that IF he did not want anything to PLEASE let us know so that we would not pack it up as it was very difficult for 2 elderly women to do the work , but we would do it. We originally set a date so we would not have to kill ourselves getting all this stuff ready for him. He constantly emailed us to hurry up He also wanted the load measured and all the tubs counted. We did that for him too.. We did hurry and got everything ready. He had seen all the pictures we sent and said he wanted to buy the whole lot. We agreed on a much lower price than what everything was worth, but we thought that it was fair since he wanted to come pick it up. He drove up here with a friend . We had our garage packed with tubs and trunks ready for him. He went through everything and said that he would only give us half of what we had agreed upon. We were shocked and stunned ! He offered to help us put the stuff back. We had retrieved all the items from different parts of our house and had made ourselves ill getting it ready for him. It was impossible for us to return everything to where it had been. He knew how hard it had been because I had told him many times that he should not hurry us to pack because we could not physically do it any faster. I reminded him that he agreed to buy the lot and he had seen the items in all the photos we sent him. He did NOT say he didn't want to buy everything or that he was NOT interested in some items. So we had packed everything for him . Now he decided that some of the stuff " wouldn't sell ".!! Having been ripped off by another dealer many years ago, I thought I was being careful this time. What a joke ! We had no choice but to agree to his terms since we did not want him in our house. We did ask him if he would at least leave us the trunks we had packed them in since they had cost us a lot of money. He agreed. But he left with many of our most treasured things that I feel he did not pay for. And I expect to see him selling the " unsellable " items on EBAY or AMAZON or somewhere else. I'm really not sure why this place gets so much hate. I've been a customer since they reopened in the Warwick Mall and for the most part, have had great experiences. As an avid (import) toy collector, they are quite literally the only store I've found in Rhode Island and nearby southern Mass that actually offers an up to date selection of Bandai prize figures, Figuarts Zero, merchandise, blind boxes and so forth. Their prices may not be the lowest compared to ordering from Ebay, ami-ami, etc but considering the cost of overseas shipping, hands down they still clock in cheaper. Plus as opposed to purchasing from the local flea market or dodgy online merchants, you can feel assured you're actually buying a legit, American distributed product as opposed to a bootleg. I do wish they regularly carried other lines aside from Bandai: on occasion I found figmas and a couple video game related nendoroids cheaper than retail. They do carry plenty of Play Arts Kai but those are actually a bit pricier than my other sources. Their selection of retro games can be a toss up. They carry the usual backlog of typical titles that pop up at flea markets, etc but if you visit frequently, you'll definitely find what you're looking for eventually. Game console-wise they seem to have a great selection of retro finds but beware of pricing in that regard: I usually like to shop around first. Between them and the Time Capsule you should be all set. I've never brought anything to sell but based on prior reviews I will say this: prices negotiated will always be based on market value. While you may (potentially) be able to sell an item for $100 on Ebay, that doesn't necessarily mean people are buying that same item for that same price in Rhode Island. The value of a collectable is generally determined by demand and if there is no demand.. well.. don't expect much. Service wise I've generally had good experiences. The manager and the rest of the staff (give for one dude) have always been friendly and super helpful when my mom stops in looking for gifts. There -is- one guy on staff though that isn't really... nice. I'll say "hi" and end up totally ignored. Even more awkward when I'm the only one in the store and he doesn't acknowledge I'm there. But still, everyone else is fabulous so it's not the biggest deal. The one major downside, however, is their return policy. Unless I'm missing something, I do believe they don't accept returns, at all. In general I choose not to purchase from stores that don't accept returns but at least so far, I haven't run into a major problem so I'll continue to shop there. (I did purchase a small boxed figure that unfortunately had a defect so I was a little sad I was stuck with it.) Overall though, I enjoy Toy Vault and definitely will continue to be a regular. For my specific needs they're quite literally the only store in Rhode Island I can rely on to carry updated stock at fair prices. read more

It doesn't seem like the workers do much. The comics in the boxes are unlabeled and all out of order. There is nothing by category or number and it's so hard to find anything there. If the workers have so much time on their hands, the least they could do is alphabetize, number, or put tabs on them so separate what they are. I can never find anything there. read more

They had an item I wanted to buy, so I sent them an e-mail message, and even called about it, when I didn't get a timely response. The person I spoke with was totally unhelpful, and I never received an e-mail reply. Now, the item I wanted to buy for $29.99 has skyrocketed to $160.00 virtually overnight (within the last 24 - 48 hours). Note to Dan (the owner) - people don't appreciate getting gouged. ALL INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS PLEASE READ BEFORE DEALING WITH THIS TERRIBLE COMPANY. I purchased an expensive AFA graded C3PO from this seller via eBay. The item was shipped using the Global Shipping Program. I know many of you already know where this is heading but for those who don't its very important that you understand how this program works and if things do go astray you are handing over any rights you have as a customer. The seller sent this item to the GSP warehouse in Kentucky. Once this seller has done this you have just forgone any rights you have if this parcel does not reach it's destination. The seller has just thrown you under a bus and made sure that they have no responsibility or even concern if the item gets lost. After two weeks the limited tracking on my item appeared as being delivered. The office that it was supposed to be delivered too is run by a very close friend of mine. ALL of her employees and trusted long term ones that would never steal from her. I approached the seller to see if he could help me find the parcel. My response back was woeful and he basically wiped his hands of it. I approached eBay in the hope they would help find the parcel. They could not care less either. NO tracking information, NO signature, NO assistance or help to find the lost item. My parcel never showed up. I lodged a dispute. The seller laughed. It wasn't long before I knew why. By shipping the item to the GSP he had just offloaded ANY responsibility and did not have to do anything to help me recover my lose. Ebay also offered no help and closed the case. In addition my right to leave feedback WAS REMOVED. Another one of the "perks" of selling internationality using the GSP. PLEASE consider this if you plan on dealing with this company for international orders. The last communication I had with the owner I was called a physco and he gloated that he owns 4 stores. I did nothing wrong. I payed my money promptly and went along with his shipping rules. I got burned bad but if I can save even one customer from having the same experience as myself I will consider it money well spent. read more

Went in there to look at some old video game consoles. My first thought was how could I see them in that dimly lit crap hole but I made the trip so I may as well. I went to ask some guy with a gray mullet and lousy tattoos about something on the shelf and he practically ignored me while staring at my girlfriend. When I finally caught his attention he assured me the system was tested and in working condition, which ended up being an outright fabrication. Best part was, they have absolutely no return policy so I was stuck with a broken fossil of a system. I brought the boxes in, as instructed by an employee after describing them to him. He took a very quick look at them (mostly older Star Trek, as I had mentioned to him during previous discussions), told me he had no interest, they were worthless, and even went so far as to ask why ever wasted my money collecting them. This place has a great selection of nostalgic toys games comics etc, that remind you of the 70s and 80s. Brings back memories of all the gi joes and Star Wars stuff I had that I destroyed. Only problems that these items are VERY expensive. Why would anybody buy anything at these prices. Also, the attitudes you get from certain employees in not necessary. They are often very RUDE. When people are rude to me and I'm about to spend money, I tell them to go pound sand and I'll go somewhere else. Bought a game a while back. It didn't work properly. Now located in Warwick Mall where the arcade used to be, the size of the store is huge. They have a huge selection of figures, comics, video games, collectibles, etc. The prices however, rip off city! Talk about price gouging and overcharging! This place is ridiculous! Do they not realize there is such a thing as competition? And now the onto the owner Dan Mayer. This guy is the biggest piece of ignorant, rude, inconsiderate piece of trash taking up space on the planet! I've gone into his RI Mall and Emerald Square locations in the past. And everytime he is there, he treats people like crap and has the biggest attitude. I asked him one time at the counter if I could see something. I asked the first time, he didn't even look at me from his computer. I said excuse me the second time and he looked at me, didn't say a word. I asked if I could see something behind the counter. He says to me "if you're not going to buy it, you're not going to see it." I was like, are you kidding me dude? He then said, "no I'm not" and continued doing whatever he was doing on his computer. 1st class dbag! I should've known better after that, but I went back a few months later in an attempt to sell some collectibles. After doing some research on line, I estimated the value of my items were around $300.00. Now I knew realistically I wouldn't get that selling it, but I was looking for at the very minimum $220.00. I brought my stuff in and he looked at it all and said he would do $80.00 and then walked away from me. Really?? Not only are you going to try and drastically low ball me, you just walk away w/o saying anything else?!?! As a fan of comic books, I'm always happy to see a comic book store make it in this struggling economy. Not so much with this place. The entire store is highly overpriced. This store is about an hour and half away from me, and it's also the closest retro store to me. I recently bought Super Mario Bros 2, the NES cartridge, from here. After the hour and a half drive back I realized the cartridge was wasn't working right. It kept freezing after the player select screen. I didn't know if it was the NES itself or the cartridge. So I bought a replacement 72 pin connector for 15 dollars, and replaced it. When I put the cartridge in, the same thing happened. I got pretty mad about it, even more so when the receipt said ALL PAYMENTS ARE FINAL. You CANNOT have a no return policy for a store that sells used items! Sure there are some new things, but... Really? I don't think they even tested let alone cleaned the games. I'm just going to say to NOT buy games from here. read more

I am quite surprised that I've visited this institution numerous times but have never written a full review. In short, the Toy Vault is a fun place to go back to a simpler, happier and more hands-on time period of my life. However, all of those memories correlated to a fairly lower retail price that abruptly halted my trip down memory lane. As far as collectible toy goes, the Toy Vault offers a multiple of DC, Marvel and a handful of anime figures, statues and Funkopop. There is also a fairly large inventory of old games from Atari to PS2, all of which were fairly impressive but also expensive. I really wished they would carry more transformers and anime figurines (i.e. Figma), as there are really not too many places that carry them here in RI. Overall, this was a fun place to go to (in fact, I'd argue it is much better than the arcade) and I'd definitely consider purchasing the memorabilia if they are...I don't know, 50% cheaper. read more
