I came here with my bf and some new friends as a nice last meal on the island. We met our friends here after the bioluminescent bay. Unfortunately, not too many restaurants are open after 8:45pm. Drinks were good. They were fun and fruity - Rum punch and sangria. I ordered the mofongo and tilapia. It was my first time wth the mofongo and I thought it was a bit dry. I'm sure I can find more authentic mofongo elsewhere. The tilapia was good, not amazing...just decent. My bf ordered the curry with quinoa. I thoguht it was good but it could have a lot more flavors. As for our new friends, they seemed to enjoy their meal very much. I believe one ordered the steak and the other ordered the veal piccatta. Trade Winds was our first stop on our first night in Vieques and we came back a second time on our trip there. My rating ended up being a 3 because my first evening there was amazing and the second time we went was barely average. Try and get patio seating outside as the restaurant does have great views. We ordered the pasta, thai red curry, the quinoa, lobster . The food that was great on the first night was barely average on the second. The dseert we had was bread pudding which was quite nice. I would still recommend to go there as I am hoping that i was on the wrong end of the law of averages. read more

I honestly wanted to like Trade Winds more. The hostess and server were really wonderful. The setting is lovely. The food, however, is another matter. Everything started off well with good conch fritters and tender calamari. It was all downhill after that. The mufongo that two in our party ordered was dreadful. I'd like to know if the chef has actually tasted this? It had the consistency of paste and absolutely no flavor. The lobster I ordered was a little better, but overcooked. The desserts were a mess. The key lime pie arrived frozen. Seriously. The flourless chocolate cake was dry and like chewing through a brick. Trade Winds needs to step it up in the kitchen. We stopped in for "Sunday" brunch and it did not disappoint! Fluffy pancakes. One of the best Cubans and nice friendly service.

We accidentally stumbled upon this place while looking for Bili, down the road. Nonetheless, the bartender and waiter promised us a good meal. The food and service was good, not great, just good. I had the swordfish with a pineapple salsa. The fish was grilled and wasn't too over seasoned. The salsa was okay but needed some more heat to contrast the sweetness of the pineapple. Overall, I was impressed by the warm and friendly service. Our waiter, along with everyone else, were more than happy to answer questions and check in on us. We visited at night, but the vista was great. I am giving Trade-winds three stars for the service, atmosphere. It is a bit overpriced for food that was just okay. The drinks weren't too bad and also overpriced. Go try it for lunch if you are in town. The views of the sea from the outside patio is breathtaking. read more

Meh, Tradewinds. It's trying a little too hard to be fancy, and the prices were especially steep ($24 for the fish of the day). Service was kind of brusque too, perhaps because we were by far the youngest people eating there the night we went. The food was fine, but I'd choose a place with a more relaxed atmosphere next time. Of course, with 5 days in Esperanza, you end up eating at every restaurant at least once... but if you're only around for a day or two, I'd say go somewhere else. read more

There stars are really for the waitress and the location. She was sweet and polite in every way. Now for the food. 12 bucks for 3 fried shrimp. Good size and nicely done but not worth 12. 12 bucks for approx 8 steamed clams. Too salty and not much flavor. 20 bucks for shrimp curry. The rice was so hard. Perhaps they think this is how basmati rice is supposed to taste. 25 bucks for grilled mahi. It wasn't bad but this piece of fish was really not generous. This second version of rice was soggy and flavorless. After taxes and tip it was 88 bucks for two people. You can find much better meal for way less than that on this island. read more

We stayed here and dined here several times. The rooms are cool and kept clean. Conveniently located right at the end of the crazy "strip," we loved our location and the price. Breakfast is included every morning of your stay and it was delicious. You can't beat the view either! Everything we ate (and drank) there was delicious. The wait staff was so friendly and fun! We were surprised that this beach front restaurant didn't serve local seafood. The specials included salmon and tilapia, neither of which were fresh. We had a fried seafood platter and shrimp with pasta. The seafood platter was mostly French fries. The pasta was very oily and the shrimp were completely overdone. Very disappointing - we stopped in with my sister and brother in law, expecting a good dinner based on their past experience. The decor and ambiance is nice; the sangria was good although it had a harsh (bitter) aftertaste. Unfortunately every dish we ordered was disappointing. The calamari was flavorless and slightly overcooked (making it a little rubbery). My whole fish was, well, just a nicely presented but thoroughly bland fried fish. The seafood scampi special was bland (and overpowered by the garlic - we had some as leftovers, which I salvaged with a lot of salt, pepper, and a bit of habanero the next day... still pretty bland). Everyone else had a similar experience. We unanimously agreed we won't be going back to Trade Winds. A shame as, at least according to my brother in law, it used to be quite good. Came here for two meals, and will start with my breakfast impressions. Had a party of four who dined on a Sunday morning around 10:30. Very laid back island vibe...serve yourself breakfast and coffee, which was fine by me. Food took at least 30-45 minutes but I can say was pretty worth the wait. I got huevos rancheros, which were banging and topped with more cheese, scallions, corn, and beans than I could eat. Husband doubled down with a combo of French toast (just ok) and an egg/bacon breakfast sandwich on a croissant (delish). San Patio/deck was well-ventilated and offered a great people and ocean-watching perch. Was impressed enough to plan for a future dinner. Ok, so dinner. Obviously, stakes and prices are higher, folks. Location is still almost perfect. Except for the douche monger locals blasting their radios and using the corner to 3-point turn....island staple. Started with white wine and pain killers plus a complimentary basket of garlic bread, which went down real nice. For an app got the fried conch in a cilantro aioli, which, frankly, just tasted fried and mayo-ey, but not sure if that's how they are supposed to taste. Husband got the monfongo, which is a PR specialty consisting of (I thought) a sweet plantain bowl filled with a meat of your choice. Opted for chicken, and came with a serving of chicken, peppers/onions, and plantains. Tasted good, but more basic than I expected. I got the mahi mahi, served piccata-style with lemon, butter, capers, with broccoli and pasta. Really enjoyed it though the pasta was a tiny bit rubbery. Bill with tip was $100, which is what I expected, but didn't blow me away like El Quentempo's flavorful combos and upscale dining experience. My advice would be stick with breakfast or lunch, which play to their strengths. Still, more positives than negatives. read more

More like a 3.5... First breakfast was a 4, second breakfast a 3. Came here only for breakfast because there aren't that many places open for breakfast. We tried the lobster eggs benedict which was actually quite good. The portion of lobster was quite large which was nice, and the eggs were cooked perfectly and runny. Another morning I had the fast Freddie (egg and bacon on a croissant) and my friend had the omelette Florentine. This breakfast was okay, the description for the sandwich said scrambled egg, I didn't realize it was scrambled with green peppers, I'm not a huge fan of green peppers. My friend said his omelette was okay, hoped for more spinach. This is one of the few places open for breakfast and early too so it is a good option. Very American which I guess isn't a bad thing because they are open I think the earliest on the strip for breakfast. Good selection of items, tastes okay to good. read more

Came by for dinner on paella night. Service was decent enough, my husband enjoyed his paella, but my dorado was awful. I ordered it broiled with lemon and garlic, and it had the taste and texture of overly dry chicken, with absolutely no moisture. (I had dorado at other places on the island over the rest of our stay, and it was delicious.) I've never sent a dish back, but I considered it with this. Great location in Esperanza near the water. We both had Mofongo, and I was rather disappointed compared to the one I had the day before from San Juan. It was a okay dish, but nothing special. The service was not too great, definitely not making up for the quality of food. The waitress did not respond to our questions attentively, and the signature cocktail drink was not good at all. I went to this place probably 4 years ago already, but there is hardly a day that goes by that I don't think about it. This hotel is not for those that want luxurious resorts, etc. This is simple. When we visited there was no tv, alarm clock, or phone in the room...perfect for a couples vacation. The rooms were nothing special, but very clean and pretty spacious. The staff were so nice. One woman spent a good half hour trying to get a cab that would take us to the fairy boat at 4am, and she found one. We ate in the restaurant they have, omg, probably some of the best food we had all trip and a SPECTACULAR VIEW. We ate and watched the sun go down over the ocean...oh yea, it is right across the street from the ocean. For my boyfriend and I, we were about 21 and 23 at the time, but wanted a nice quiet get away this was perfect. We were the youngest people there by about 20 to 30 years, and there was no families with screaming kids, very romantic. We would go back in a heart beat. read more

My friends, husband and I were here last year and it was the only place that we could find that served mofongo on the island. We were a group of 6 and 4 people ordered the mofongo while the rest of us ordered seafood. The 4 that ordered the mofongo were so disappointed with it that they didn't bother eating the whole dish. They just ate what they could because they were hungry. Their impression of the mofongo was that it was bland and "didn't taste like real mofongo". I was overall disappointed with the service because I had to get up several times to order drinks for us from the bar. It seemed the waitress kept forgetting about us. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the food and the service so I will never return there. read more
