The absolute best pork belly that we've ever had. (We are both over 55 & complete food snobs.) the meat was crunchy and juicy having been roasted over a charcoal grill. It came as part of a sandwich special with a homemade bun and perfectly balanced hot sauce. The pina coladas are hands down the best on the island. All of this with a spectacular water view and attentive service. If you are an Eater editor, write this place up! It puts every other beachside eatery to shame. When you arrive early in the morning to Sun Bay, the entrance is desolate. One or two chickens and horses roam freely but everything is quiet. After some morning time at the beach, we headed back to the entrance thinking we would head to another beach. A man came outside of the shop and asked us if we wanted to stay for lunch. He said that the kitchen was just opening but that he could get us something to drink. We wanted mojitos, but he didn't have any mint. Fortunately for our taste buds, he recommended that we order piña coladas. He told us they would be made with fresh coconut and promised we would enjoy them. He walked over to an area with coconuts and a hatchet, and started chopping fresh coconuts. He drained the water into a bowl and brought the rest of the fruit inside the kitchen. A few minutes later, the delectable pineapple and coconut masterpiece hit our lips for the first time and it was flavor town. The best piña coladas my partner and I ever had. While we sipped on our fantastic thirst quenching beverages he told us that the full kitchen was still getting ready, but he could bring us some empanadas. We ordered fish and conch, and downed our first piñas while they were prepared. The empanadas were cooked to perfection, the conch a little bit spicy with a nice kick, the fish juicy and fresh as if it was caught that morning. We ordered another couple empanadas and a second piña colada. Everything tasted even better the second time and we loved every single bite. The cherry on top of this meal was how simple it was to pay for. Our host Carlos, offered us the ability to pay with Venmo, CashApp, or Google Wallet. Carlos gave us tips about where to go for the rest of the day, and seemed to always check in on us at the right time. This meal as he says, "might not be the best way, but it's the right way". Look, if you get there early enough and can get the lobster dish, that is the way to go! No questions about it. Also MUST TRY PORK TACOS! So many uses of the cooked pork rib that it amazes in flavor! Tie all that with a nice mango smoothie and the meal is perfect ! Oh and of course, enjoy the view of the beautiful beach and many horses around! Tip: if you go around the corner towards the bathrooms and turn on the showers, horses will come for water and play with you! They're super friendly. Order a pina colada or a coco loco, ask the staff what's good, and sit back and enjoy. The Pina Colada was good. Friendly waiter (Chasti). He made our drinks from fresh coconuts and slices of fresh pineapple. Drinks were around $7 each. The empanada was okay and the burrito was good. Pizza was good and will definitively suffice for 2 to 3 people. Took about 15 minutes to get our food. Kitchen was closing and they allow us to order what we wanted. If you need to eat, get there before 3pm. This place is located at the entrance of the beach near the restrooms. The waves are stronger at that locatio. The further East you go the "nicer" the waves are. Therefore if you are on the far East of the beach it will take about 15 to 20 minutes each way to walk to this place. read more

This place never fails. I've been there twice--once before the pandemic and once during--and everything about it has been superb. The first time, I had some sort of empanada, I think, which is top notch. The hot sauce was particularly excellent--spicy but also very flavorful; some of the best hot sauce I've ever had. The second time, I had a chicken quesadilla, which was also great and also came with great hot sauce. The hot sauce was different each time; they make it in house based on whatever ingredients are locally available at the time. We stumbled upon Arena Mar after enjoying Sun Bay beach and saw a man chopping up coconuts with a machete outside to make drinks. There are a few outdoor tables near a door at a building that houses the kitchen and not much else. Though the seating may not be the fanciest, Arena Mar is a hidden gem of Vieques! The owner/operators Chasti and his wife Erica make the best pina coladas on the island, and their fresh seafood specials rival that of any "fancy" gringo restaurant on the island. Even though we visited many other beaches and restaurants on the island, we kept coming back to Arena Mar for their drinks, the fresh and delicious food, and the conversations with friends made at the cafe. Some of the dishes we had were fresh lobster and mahi mahi tacos. These specials we had were made with seafood caught the day before and the freshness was obvious. The fries are perfect and I highly recommend Chasti's homemade habenero hot sauce - it's better than anything Coqui Fire has (and I liked CF's hot sauces, too). Chasti is charismatic, friendly, and funny - he's happy to offer advice on the island and it's clear that he and Erica enjoy and take pride in what they do. I highly recommend that everyone visit Sun Bay beach, and when you do, be sure to stop and enjoy Arena Mar! read more

This place looks like it doesn't exist anymore but we walked up because of all of the reviews about the great pina coladas. The owner greeted us and literally pulled out a table a chairs for us. Glad we stayed because the owner was awesome. Got to talk to him about the island, found out some great local spots, and got advice on other places around the area. Pina coladas are very fresh and it was much appreciated. Not the best I've had like the reviews say but definitely worth coming. Prepare for lots of garlic in everything though. Arenamar is the closest option near the sun bay beach. Though they don't display this on a board, they are cash only. We had to drive to an ATM in a hotel 5 minutes away to get cash. We ordered their pina coladas and these were boozy and good. For food, we got the polls quesadilla, and the beef and pork pastellillos. They were good, not great. read more
