If you find the Trader Joe's on Hyperion in Silver Lake daunting with the street and parking lot resembling the 405 or the parking lot at the Hollywood Bowl, this Trader Joe's, a relatively short drive away on the laid-back 2, is a less harried alternative. I'm not going to pretend that the parking lot here is a kind old lady. It's a little cramped with its own security guard directing traffic. Shopping in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California... After meeting up with Sam, Nikki, and Hannah, I saw Trader Joe's on my way to my next destination. I stopped, made a U-turn, and parked in the free parking lot! We don't have this store in Hawaii and probably never will because of shipping costs. That's why so many Hawaii residents visit Trader Joe's on the mainland. The prices are reasonable and the products are interesting! After using the convenient, clean restroom, I browsed the cozy store. I like to look at the colorful, un-tropical flowers, quality greeting cards, and practical tote bags. Might have the worst designed Trade Joe's parking lot I've ever seen... And that's saying a lot. Seriously, is it a requirement that Trader Joe's has a terrible parking lot at every one of its locations? This parking lot is a horseshoe. There's one way in, and one way out, and there aren't enough parking spots for the people that want to get in, and it takes so long to get into the lot, and then even longer to find a spot, and it just leads to a huge backup. And unfortunately, inside the store doesn't get any better. This location is small and cramped, and there are too many people inside for the size. So your grocery shopping trip turns into a game of bumper cars. I would definitely avoid this Trader Joe's location if I was you. If there is another location even close to the same distance, go to that one. read more

In the World of Food, subgroup Sweets and sub of that Ice Creams, Trader Joe's Pumpkin Ice Cream stands among the other flavors from all the thousands of Ice Cream producers on the Pantheon of all Ice Creams and for sure at the top of the Mount Olympus of Pumpkin Ice Creams. It took TJ's a few years to get it right but about 3 years ago: they hit Nirvana with the current blend. The Kiddoes in my family have still not been pried from the Chocolate rut but of course Chocolate is perennial but just not as complicated to get right as is Pumpkin. My biggest beef with TJ's is that they always run out of product way, way to early in the season. I mean no Pumpkin Ice Cream for Thanksgiving! It's an Infamy. (a check out dude informed me that some customers by 10 at a time so as not to run out at home!) So: Tj's why do you not take the hint and order more so that we Pumpkin Ice Cream addicts can get their fix all the way through at least Thanksgiving? In any event i was prepped to touch and feel and taste this zenith of Ice Cream flavors: spicy, nutmeggy, cinnamonish, creamy almost to a fault. So what about this unit? As i have written before it was the only Tj's near where i grew up and each Saturday, after Breakfast at the Pacific Dining Car (sadly it has now closed after almost 100 years), the Pops and i would check out what was new here. Also: they had a Live Butcher Shop here then and the Pops liked his Beef. So i have history with this store. Yes it is small-ish, Yes it finally got a refurbishing that increased the aisle widths. And as always the crew is jovial, personable and the place looks as good physically as it can. Bear in mind that Tj's goes wayyyy out for Pumpkin. I even saw a Pumpkin Rub Balm. This was my go-to Trader Joe's location when I lived in the Atwater Village area when I was in college. 3 stars!!! Haven't gone much to this location lately unless I'm in the area needing to pick up goodies from Trader Joe's. Seems that this TJs is so much busier now than what I remember so go during off peak shopping hours if possible. The store can seem really small, making it really hard to maneuver a cart when it's busy. The parking can also be challenging since it's definitely not meant to handle the traffic the store gets when it's really busy. There's often cars lined up on Colorado waiting to park. If you're lucky, just take the available street parking one to two blocks from the store. read more

I don't even know what star to give. During the fires of LA I called if I could get an exchange on some perishables. I had to evacuate for 2 days and had no electricity all my food spoiled. I called if they could do anything to help and the manager was just rude about it. I know I didn't suffer as close to other ppl losing everything. But some kindness could've helped. I love this Trader Joe's. In Eagle Rock , between Highland Park and South Pasadena, I end up coming here in the later hours when everyone is at home and done with shopping to minimize exposure. While there is no guarantee that I won't test positive, I make sure I minimize my crowd exposure and wearing mask for me is a requirement whether I am interfacing with my clients or running errands. Service is always polite. Store ushers ensure you follow City of LA's pandemic guidelines. Cashiers have trained its customers to follow TJ's checkout protocols. They have al aisle traffic monitors to ensure you are going one way only and not contribute to crowding. Other TJ locations do the same. I find this location less congested than my nearby South Pass branch and it occupies a slightly larger space. Parking during the pandemic is plentiful and appreciate that this Trade Joes appears to be very serious about social distancing....I like ... a lot. Finally they seem to not run out of my favorite black cherry n chocolate chip ice cream. Happy. Tip: Come after 6p weekdays, less of a line or no line. This is a recap of my experience visiting TJ during COVID-19 times -- This Trader Joe's has a parking attendant / security guard / helps with carts which is probably the most positive part of the experience. I give TJ props for employing someone who helps with the parking lot experience. However, with supplies/ other customer service it is rather subpar for a TJ. Given the 6 feet distance, the plexiglass already installed, this is the only retailer that I know of that forces you to stay away from the cash register. Good / bad thing. Good bc it reduces potential exposure but bad so you cannot see the prices as they ring up your items (not that it would be wrong but there is that small percentage when it is scanned more than once, it is incorrectly priced, or an item is not bagged) so that's something different. The way they say it is also demanding, but I guess they got used to the habit. Overall, I found this store to be an anomaly in terms of customer service where they tell you to stay in certain locations. There was an employee at the front of the entrance who was merely in charge of crowd control (does not offer a wipe or clean carts like at Ralphs and other supermarkets); she told me to wait outside when there was no line. Ok, no biggie. However, other TJ I have been to pre-COVID times had some sort of cart wipe. I guess they're going along with Costco which doesn't offer cart wipes nor offer to wipe them for you (Costco used to offer wipes pre-COVID times). Social distancing is a requirement to operate the business in this time, so that's their extent of "caring". They also have designated foot traffic directions but it seems like you're just in the store longer because you need to circle around (there are really just 4 -5 rows max!). I have witnessed other businesses make drastic improvements so their location is safer. Offering to wipe your cart, wiping after each use of the credit card machine/ counter, offering hand sanitizer, checking temperature, etc but I just do not see it at TJ other than them enforcing social distancing of the store which is mandatory per the public health guidelines. I was a bit disappointed that TJ's reputation of friendly employees doesn't exist during COVID-19 times. Company policies probably need to change. Maybe they're overworked, over stressed, and/ or not getting paid enough (no / little hazard pay?), etc!?! read more

The good days of Trader Joe's are gone - not just symbolically with the passing of its founder. But given that they pretend to be better and nicer, TJ desperately fails as it handles the Covid situation particularly poorly!! Don't get me wrong: I am all for masks and social distancing! No question about that! However, "mask and distance" do not have to be equated with rudeness. There is no customer-friendliness anymore. Completely gone! Not only are customers treated like cattle, but the employees really just stand around as traffic controllers and avoid any interaction; service does not exist in their vocabulary anymore. When I for example asked where the "Vegetable Wash" was located, the employee was simply annoyed to be bothered, and she stated that they did NOT have any. Because she really was annoyed that a customer would have the impertinence to ask a question, this was what she probably thought would be the fastest way to eliminate that threat. (Un-)Fortunately, another employee who was a minimal touch more supportive, came up and uncovered her lazy dishonest answer by pointing out the isle with the veggie wash. She lamely claimed that she had heard me say where the vegetables were, but I had responded to that that I knew where the produce was but was looking for the "wash"... What this illustrates is really the fundamental problem that the TJ culture has vanished behind the mask. I too am an "essential worker" and I too worry about getting Covid. But in contrast to TJ, we treat our customers (aka patients) with the same or even more professional kindness than before. It's called compassion! Although they were out of stock, I still appreciate their help and enthusiasm. This store seems smaller than the one I usually go, but they have everything I need. Eagle Rock Trader Joe's is just like any other TJs in SoCal. During peak times, expect chaos in the parking lot. If you're unlucky, you won't find parking. For best results, come during off hours! Service is very typical of Trader Joe's however. Friendly crew, whether they're helping on the floor or helping you at the register! Great flower selection, most especially during peony season (woohoo!!). A bunch of 5-stem peonies for only $7.99 is a steal. If there's chamomile, grab a bunch too because those sell out fast at only $3.99 per bunch. read more

Well they are at it again....reconfiguring the store layout. It's been going on for the better part of what...a couple of year? The cereal is where the bread used to be...the grab-and-go stuff is no longer near the door -- its against the back wall. Whatever rhyme or reason there is to the produce organization seems to change on a weekly basis...and where is the logic in swapping the meat and the cheese? Is this a first-world problem? Of course...but when the parking lot is overflowing (much of the time) and you just want to get in and out as fast possible, it's a drag having to track down an employee for directions to stuff you knew the location of only a week ago. They need to teach their employees to bag groceries properly. You do not put orange juice, milk.,water bottles and eggs stacked on their side and other items stacked on top. That makes no sense; that is an accident waiting to happen. I wish this young generation would use common sense when bagging other customers groceries, you don't see this pathetic style at any other supermarket stores. It seems to be a Trader Joe's thing, and it's stupid. I LoVe Trader Joe's. Their assortment of products make this store very interesting and appealing! Everytime I come in here my feet tends to take me to the wine section then to the produce section! (which was awesome by the way) last time I was here I bought a bag of fingerling potatoes and a pack of baby broccoli - I very seldom see "beautiful" fingerling potatoes in the grocery so when I saw it at TJ's...the impulse just took over! Their staff is uber friendly, I wish they have a bigger parking but oh well, with the number of patron's they have, they could have a parking lot as big as the 405 and they'll probably fill it too (grin) read more

I am a huge fan of Trader Joe's. I just love the vibe that makes this store so special. Why three stars only then? My wife and I love fresh flowers - and out of whatever reason the roses bought here "die" must faster than the roses we buy in other Trader Joes on our way. As I am pretty sure that all Trader Joes in and around LA get them from the same source, they must do something wrong in the store or storage - maybe they water them not enough before they put them out. I would not mention this if it had not happened for the third time - we now drive the detour to La Canada and shop there, as their roses "live" a week longer than the ones bought in Eagle rock. I love Trader Joe's and on a normal shopping trip, I always walked away feeling good about my $$$ purchases. I understand due to our state of global disparities, the least the employees can do is BE NICE! I stand in line like everybody else keeping my distance like everyone else, wear my mask like everyone else, but it appears the people working there are perhaps over worked? Underpaid? Trying to deal their own issues, we are all making adjustments, I get it. While I was in Pasadena during one of my So Cal visits, I was waiting for an appointment and had some time to kill. It wasn't too far to go to Eagle Rock from Pas, and since I was making a run at Colorado Donuts anyway, Trader Joe's was my next stop. This location opened at 8 a.m. and it was easy to find. I was just glad they had a relatively big parking lot (given that Pasadena and surrounding areas can be rather crowded and lack parking). Even though I had never been to this Trader Joe's before, it was relatively easy to find the snacks I wanted, while perusing the selection of new items. Here are some of my favorites: Praline-Pecans: You can find these square containers in the "sweets" aisle, which usually includes all the cookies and chocolate items. They're usually next to items like chocolate-covered almonds, etc. During any Trader Joe's run, I have to get at least two containers of this snack, even though they're pricy ($5-6, I think). I just love the texture and flavor so much. You get the additional crunch from the pralines, as well as the sweet flavors from the pecans and top coating of sugar. I've added this to my plain breakfast cereal, to my salads and just eaten them on their own ... they're my ultimate favorite TJ's snack. Milk Chocolate-Covered Pretzels: Even though the praline-pecans are my current fav, if I want something really sweet, I always get these pretzels. Sure, the dark chocolate pretzels are delicious, but nothing packs quite as powerful of a punch as these milk chocolate pretzels that are filled with PEANUT BUTTER. Peanut butter and chocolate is the greatest marriage of flavors, and I always have to ration myself when it comes to these pretzels, as I can easily eat the entire bag in one sitting. Each bite-sized piece features creamy peanut butter on the inside and a luscious milk chocolate coating on the outside. Tip: I throw the entire bag in the fridge because I think these pretzels taste better cold! Plus, that way, the milk chocolate exterior won't melt and result in the pretzels all melded to each other. Kale Chips: I enjoy salads, but I don't like kale because of its bitter taste. But when it comes to these seasoned kale chips, it's a different story ... kale never tasted so good! I really enjoyed the seasoning and flavor of these chips, which were perfectly crispy but not overly hard. It had just enough salty flavor without being over the top, and the chips were really thin because they were made from kale. Highly recommend these if you're looking for a "healthier" snack, or a great snack item for someone who doesn't love sweets. Wasabi Roasted Seaweed: Okay, so I'm not exactly sure if this is the exact name of the product, but I do know that I bought seaweed that had wasabi flavor from here. These little packets are sold individually, but I think there's another package option that comes with three in a pack. The boyfriend, who loves wasabi, loved this! He said it contained the perfect amount of spice and wasabi flavor. He used it to make his little own mini sushi with fresh fish and rice, but he said it was great just for eating straight-up as a snack, too. read more
