First time actually purchasing frozen items and eating them. I would go grab an item or two and not try them (from the frozen section). They have really great products for reasonable prices. I tried the Chicken Masala and Channa Masala with the Garlic Naan. I likes them all. Their fruit, veggies, nuts, dried fruits, canned black beans, and a few other items l've tried in the past are worth it to me. Shopping at Trader Joe's is a special shopping experience. On the surface, it is just a grocery store that carries their own brand-name products. The core of the Trader Joe's experience is much different: the chain carries high-quality products at a very reasonable price. Along with its low prices come a well paid, friendly staff, who go out of their way to be helpful. Indianapolis has two Trader Joe's locations. While my usual store is on the Northwest Side, this location of Trader Joe's is the larger of the two. Due to its size, it is able to carry a wider variety of goods. The products that Trader Joe's offers are of exceptional quality, and the chain seems to value healthy choices. Whether you are looking for meats, produce, dairy, delicious frozen meals, wonderful coffees, or specialty foods, you will find it at this store. You'll also enjoy a light snack as you shop - the staff prepares some wonderful treats at their sampling bar. Another excellent perk of shopping at Trader Joe's is the ability to sample most products before you buy them. You are also able to return items (with no questions asked) if you find yourself dissatisfied. Trader Joe's also carries reasonably priced paper products, nutritional supplements, and hygiene products. Their brand-name supplements are equal in price to what you would pay for a similar item at a larger chain. Why, oh why, can't we get a TJ's downtown? So asinine that there are two on the north side. Really, the well to-do need two and we can't get one? Booooo! Started going to TJ's as a young girl in Southern California, and it remains my favorite place to grocery shop. I rarely go to the big grocery chains since TJ's has just about everything I need and want to eat a fairly healthy existence. They continue adding stuff all the time. If you have a chance to try their Southwest Chicken (you just throw it in the oven), do it. Amazing! Great fruit and veg and some of my favorite staples: Valencian organic peanut butter, quinoa, awesome trail mix, soy creamer, curry veggie burgers (took them long enough to get those in Indiana; I had missed them since moving from Cali), cheeses, wine- great values abound. read more

I don't live near a Trader Joe's anymore, and that makes me sad. This location is wonderful, but my word, just getting here is kind of the problem. However, I did just accompany a friend for a shopping trip and found goodies for myself! I love how unusual and fun their selections are! Nothing run of the mill here. The cheese case is to die for - seriously, get you some. They even had burrata! Look it up. It will change your life. Also, the staff is the friendliest pretty much more than anywhere else! Sometimes I just feel really bad for people who don't have a Trader Joe's in their city. As someone who gets easily overwhelmed in gigantic grocery stores, Trader Joe's is just the right size for me AND has everything I need and everything I didn't realize I needed. Customer service is amazing with staff checking in while I shop, giving cooking suggestions while I check out, and even calling me later in the day after verifying with corporate that a specific tea was actually decaf. Honestly, this is the only place we grocery shop for so many reasons! Cost: A+ We're a 2-person household and we don't spend nearly as much as we did before. Quality: A+ It just doesn't get better. The selection is just huge! Without being bombarded with all the traditional grocery store marketing madness. Variety: A+ We go every two weeks and we make it a point to try something new/different every time. They truly have something for every diet, allergy, lifestyle, etc. The vegan/vegetarian selection is so great. The meat selection is A+ (I've heard). Cheeses are on 'fleek.' Beer and wine! They lose a star for having TWO STORES on essentially the same road...one on the far northeast side and one on the far northwest side. Really, Trader Joe? Your stores are all over the place in other cities, like Chicago, DC, San Francisco......but southside Indy gets ZERO...downtown Indy NONE. That's not cool, Joe. Not cool at all. However, the employees are pretty useful and cool (and sometimes even funny). The food is affordable. I like that it doesn't take me 15 minutes to get through the store because it's petite. LOVE the products. Once I got a spoiled piece of salmon, and they cheerfully refunded me and I didn't have to bring back the gross fish. I like the free samples (last night I had a bite of pumpkin pie). LOVE that I can have a cheese party without going broke. Their low-budget beers and wines are fantastic for cooking and fairly passable for drinking if you need to buy in bulk and your friends aren't super snobby about booze. Kefir, non-dairy milks, organic products, cheese are generally much cheaper here than at other grocery chains or gourmet stores. Their frozen foods are very good and the MorningStar Farms sausage links' everyday price is equivalent to the super sale price at other grocery stores. I am particularly fond of the somewhat-strange party snacks, although they are much pricier than at Saraga. Trader Joe's is a great place to find food to "cheat" with if you're not much of a cook or are pressed for time. For example, you can buy an already-seasoned tri-tip to use for your steak fajitas. You can find pre-marinated chicken to put on the grill. They also sell many pre-cooked foods that you just have to microwave...if you can't cook at all. In conclusion, start writing letters, people! We need a downtown Trader Joe's! It isn't fair that so many of us (including students, who want nothing more than to eat healthy) have to drive 30 minutes each way to get groceries! read more

I don't think I've ever met anyone who doesn't love Trader Joe's...unless they are the unfortunate ones who don't have a TJ's in their locale. I was spoiled before having one right across the street from my office when I lived in Northern California. However, now that I am living in Indianapolis, I have two to choose from. The TJ's on 82nd Street is the closest to my house. After doing a 13 mile walk on the Monon trail in Carmel, I was walking and talking with a guy who casually mentioned that he was going to TJ's on his way home after the hike. I was thrilled...because I needed to pick up a few things and being in an area of town that I'm not overly familiar with, it was nice to be able to follow him to the TJ's and easily navigate my way back home from there. I love TJ's...the one on 86th Street is great too...but dangerously close to Pier One Imports, where I've been known to drop a few bucks on 'shiny objects' that catch my eye. read more

I love everything about their food, staff, and business values BUT they often run out of food and for that I have to dock a star :( I love trying all the different frozen foods because they make for quick dinners that are filling and yummy. The cheese selection is plenty and my husband loves their beer selection. What would I do without Trader Joes to offer me affordable wine!? I refuse to shop anywhere else for wine, unless buying straight from the winery. They are amazing, affordable wines, including a $10 Chianti Classico (tip: it's only a real Chianti wine is it has the black rooster sticker). They have organic wine options as well. However, I highly recommend not buying the Charles Shaw wine. It's $2.99 for a reason. The rest of the store has some great offerings as well! Their flower selection is super affordable and diverse. Again, it's just about the only place I purchase flowers. They have great assortment of organic fruits and vegetables with some of the best prices for a grocery store (I've still found the farmers market veggies to be cheaper). Aside from fresh produce they have some of the best prices on other grocery items. However, I do wish they had bulk bins. I'm not a fan of pre-packaged meats so I don't purchase meat from here. But the selection of cheeses is my favorite! So many delicious cheeses. Especially the cranberry goat cheese around Thanksgiving/Christmas time. I stock up on that! The staff is always very helpful and it must be a requirement to have an awesome personality to work there. I love grocery shopping here! If you're 100% organic like me you can find a lot of really great options but they lack in some areas like frozen fruits and veggies. Be sure to read labels! Just because Trader Joe's is considered a healthier grocery store does NOT mean everything there is edible. There are definitely some food items I wouldn't dare touch (their veggie burger patties are some of the worst you can eat). In continuing my search for unrefined and unprocessed foods, I was directed by a fellow yelper to Trader Joe's. I'd been to other Trader Joe's, but this was years ago before my obsessive ingredient reading. Trader Joe's is a good place to find grass-fed beef, great produce and bread with no preservatives or refined ingredients. You'll pay for it, that's for sure, but at least you can find it. I absolutely, positively ADORE Trader Joe's. This place seriously makes grocery shopping and healthy eating fun. Although their inventory is small compared to most grocery stories, it is mighty and packed with incredible finds. Also there customer service is exceptional. The employees actually seem happy to be there, and I love how they all provided honest feedback and recommendations of various products.. During a recent visit I was in search of cheeses for an appetizer cheeseboard I was creating for my upcoming birthday dinner. I wish I could remember her name, but the employee who helped me was beyond helpful and so knowledgeable about cheese. The blue cheese Stilton and bacon cheddar are a MUST try. I can not thank her enough. This is a place you have to go and just explore. Don't be afraid to try new things. They seriously have items your couldn't even image. Additionally, they have a nice selection of wine and beer ranging in price. You can pick up a bottle of the infamous "2 buck chuck" to higher end items. I used to love Trader Joe's. I started shopping @ the W. 86th st. location back around 2000. Now that I no longer live close to that location, I go to the 82nd st. location. I don't come here often to tell you the truth, and today was a prime example as to why that is. Surely I thought that all the bible belters would still be at church at 10:30 am. Nope. Parking lot was probably 50 cars deep. I walk in, and it's like there is a famine going on. It looked like a typical day before Thanksgiving at TJ's, not an average Sunday morning. While I only needed a few things, it's still difficult to navigate around the narrow aisles while people are literally having get together's in the aisles (you dullards do realize the place is only the size of a large BP gas station, right?) And the wee tots scurry around with the miniature TJ grocery carts (which I hate). It ain't a playground, and sometimes I want to growl at the little shits as they ram their carts into my shins. You know what I feel like saying to the parents who let their kids drive those carts around like Mario Andretti? Quality. No bones about it. This is where good food and fair prices reside under the same roof. I am just astounded how great the quality is of produce, meat, cheeses, and everything else for that matter, for the price you pay at check-out. And their Boatswain craft bottled beer? You gotta try it! My favorite is the H.L.V. (Heavy Lift Vessel). I'm an unprocessed food nut. I read every label and inspect every ingredient. I've been pleasantly surprised how good most of the food is with the TJ label, and how simple the ingredients really are. It makes me very satisfied to give them my business every week. How does Joe do it? How does he sell such wonderful, delicious, and simple food for so cheap? I have heard people talk for years about the joys of Trader Joe's, but never lived in a city lucky enough to have one. Finally, in Indianapolis, we finally have the chance to cross paths. After getting to experience the joys of Whole Paycheck (er... Whole Foods) in Denver for the last few years, it's nice to find a place with the same perks but for people on a budget. I was expecting to pay a premium for organic food and produce, nice service with a smile, and short lines. But at this Trader Joe's... you don't. I have been here quite a few times to stock up on fresh produce, cereal, cooking essentials (olive oil here is a bargain), meatless products, and frozen food. The amount that we're able to get here for a good price is mind-blowing. $80 here would easily cost me $140 or more at Marsh, but at Marsh I wouldn't have nearly the same selection. I am a huge fan and go out of my way to make it here every few weeks. It's a smaller store and is busy, but worth navigating around people. It's great to finally see what people have been raving about for years! read more

This is the Trader Joe's closest to my house. The staff is awesome. If I ever decided to take a part time job, I'd seriously consider applying at this one. I don't have much to say about this specific location. I've been shopping Trader Joe's for 20+ years in 4 different States. Honestly, they all seem identical on the inside. It's really weird that way. Even the staff is homogeneous as far as I can tell. Super friendly, efficient yet with a very laid back vibe. My only negative about this and every other Trader Joe's: I sometimes get really claustrophobic in there when it's crowded. I have no idea why. The aisles are very wide and they move quickly. It always seems louder and more chaotic in the aisles at peak times. I try to go at the slowest hours. read more

I Love Love LOVE Trader Joes! This is my favorite grocery store of all time. I wish they would build on in Bloomington, I only get to go there when visiting family in Indy. This location is great, friendly staff always clean and a fun place to shop. TJ's is crazy different from any other grocery store and most people don't know! A few things about Trader Joes: 1. Everything with the Trader Joe's Logo is -GMO FREE -Has No artificial Coloring -Has No artificial Preservatives 2.You can try anything is the store!! As long as it doesn't have to be heated (frozen meals etc) you can bring it to the sample station and they will open it for you to try!! I'm talking Cheese, juice, fruits, ice cream, yogurt, chips, protein bars, cereals, candy..anything! 3. They are always sampling items!! While most stores do this for you to buy things (of course they want you to buy it too) Trader Joe's actually wants you to try something you normally would never buy. They have so many unique and different foods, this lets you try something you may have never even seen in the store before. 4. They always have new products!! This is good and bad, because if you are a fan of a seasonal item you have to stock up when you see it. Not only do they have certain items that come out seasonally but they are always introducing new items every week. They even have a New Item Shelf that you can check out so you don't miss anything. Again though the down side is they are a small store and if certain items don't sell great you may never see them again. 5. You can return anything, no questions asked! They want you to try new things and if you don't like it just bring back the receipt or an empty wrapper and they will refund you on the spot. It's also good if something you buy spoils fast. 6. Every store has a mascot (a stuffed animal) the staff hides it everyday so that kids can look for it. When you find it, go to the sample station for your free Lolipop. Its a great idea and a great way to keep kids occupied as parents shop. Those are just some of the main things that set TJ's apart. It is such a fun and colorful store to be in. Trader Joe's saves me money. I have a family of 3 and visit Trader Joe's once a week. Usually I come out with my account right at $100.00 lighter. This gives us food for the entire week, including organic meats, cheeses, and milk. One trip equals 4 home-cooked meals a week and I am addicted to their fresh flower selection. Since we eat mostly organic foods, I have found the selection at Trader's surpasses the "organic" section of Kroger and Marsh. And the prices are better than Whole Foods. My 2 year old daughter loves the fresh fruits and snacks that we buy there. I highly recommend the fruit bars (think fig newtons, just longer and in strawberry, blueberry, apple and fig) and the 100% natural fruit wraps (fruit roll ups made with real fruit and no added sugar) as snacks for kids. We are addicted to them. They have great coffees, immensely friendly staff that actually know how to use/cook the products, did I mention the awesome fresh flower selection! And as someone highly sensitive to MSG, I NEVER have to worry about what is hidden in their foods. read more

I cannot imagine a better small / specialty grocer. The location on 82nd street is always bustling with energetic employees and patrons alike. Their cheese selection is top notch and their beer and wine offerings provide some unique (and very cheap) alternatives to other local stores. Of note in the beer selection is the specialty bottles of the Trader Joes brand. They're special brews currently provided by Unibroue and offered as Trader Joe's Providential Golden Ale and the Trader Joe's 2012 Vintage. Each 750ml bottle is a steal at around $6. Don't be afraid to try every sample they have in the store and/or ask an employee to open a box of something for you to have a taste. Almost every thing we've tried ends up in our shopping basket and returns to our pantry each month. You might not be able to make a full week of groceries out of what they have it stock, but there's always the big box stores to fill in the gaps when necessary. As a vegetarian, Trader Joe's has become a great supplement to my regular grocery shopping! By no means could I do all of my shopping there, but it is a staple for lots of things I need (like the spray olive oil - $5 cheaper than meijer!), and their inexpensive wine selection is fantastic! I always go in thinking to get just a bottle or two, but with the great prices and selection, I generally walk out with more like four or five bottles. All of their vegetarian food is well labeled, and there is a large selection of great frozen foods that are great for lunches. Be warned though, I've never been there when the place isn't packed! How have I not reviewed Trader Joe's yet? I love shopping here. Employees are always friendly and helpful. I have never been disappointed with anything that I have purchased here. A few of my favs are the spinach and kale dip, chicken cilantro wontons, any of their chicken sausages, riced cauliflower, and the Kung Pao chicken. Trader Joe's has a diverse product selection, super-friendly employees, and is overall a good value. Think of it as a middle-ground between the low-cost big-box grocers and higher-end specialty places like Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Sendik's, etc. The only thing I'd caution against buying here is fruit: I think you will get fresher, better quality fruit (and a greater selection) elsewhere. If you're vegan or vegetarian, try their faux meats. . . the beefless strips, chickenless strips, meatless ground beef (it is better-tasting and a lower price than the comparable Morningstar brand), vegan chorizo, etc. They also have several dairy-free cheeses (though these, like all brands, tend to mold pretty quickly once opened) They also have a lot of good frozen vegetable mixes that are already pre-seasoned with various herbs and spices, and which need only be tossed in a skillet for a few minutes before being served. Their multi-grain tortilla chips are by far my favorite, as are their "entertainment cracker." Their original hummus and fresh pico di gallo are also delicious. And you can't beat the price on their Charles Shaw wines (a.k.a. "Two buck Chuck") Unless you have lots of patience, avoid going here on the weekends or from 5-7 p.m. on weekdays, because they're crazy-busy, and both stores (East 82nd St. and West 86th St.) are pretty small. Many of the people who go here aren't mindful or considerate of those around them, and will stand in one place talking on the phone or staring at the products (oblivious to the fact that you're standing there waiting for them to move so you can take a look yourself and grab whatever you need) or will practically push you out of the way and/or invade your personal space reaching around you to grab something (instead of waiting their turn). . . This is more a commentary on northsiders than on Trader Joe's patrons, but it's exacerbated by the fact that the stores are small and there are only two of them serving Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. read more

Trader Joe's has a surprisingly extensive wine collection. And for someone like myself, who is on a budget, you can't get any better prices than at this place. They have classic bold reds, dry white wines, and my personal favorite dessert wines. Also, this is a great place to find a lot of organic ingredients. You're not going to find a lot of name brand recognition here. I remember visiting a Trader Joe's for the first time in Boston and it was very earth-toned, which startled me a little. Nevertheless, once you start getting in the isle you'll find some great selections. There's always something new to try, and with the free samples in the back of the store, you have no excuse not to. I am in LOVE with their pomegranate yogurt! In love!!! I take it for lunch to work several times a week. Other random must buys are: cookie butter, hummus, pre-packed sushi, pineapple salsa, chocolate covered pretzels, frozen macaroons, mochi, any of their nuts, cereals... I'm rambling. And the wine selection is amazing - and so stinkin' cheap. I'm a sweet white fan, and consistently buy a $4.99 Riesling in a blue bottle. The service here is unbeatable! It almost makes me feel bad, like I'm asking them to go out of their way for me. If you need to ask where a product is, they wil actually walk you to where it is and show it to you. None of the apathetic "uh, I think it's in aisle 27" crap. And the products are so good! It's nice to be able to buy prepared food without worrying that it has tons of crap in it. They have a variety that you don't find at the regular grocery store. This isn't my main supermarket, because I personally don't need to splurge on super organic "we play classical music to our chickens" meat and produce. But for things like frozen meals, indian food, rice crackers, salsa, sausages, juices...this place is the best! read more

Trader Joe's is great store. The brand is consistent and attractive. At the same time they always seem to include local elements in the design of each store. They have great products for reasonable prices. I really wish we had one in Bloomington so I didn't have to travel to Indianapolis. read more
