Can't give it a full 5* as they don't sell alcohol here. I realise this isn't their fault, but due to PA laws. Anyway, in short, I liked this location much better than the one on Penn Ave. It's newer, more spacious, and less crowded. Contrary to the other reviews, I had absolutely no problem with parking here, it was plentiful, but my visit was early on a Monday afternoon as opposed to a Sunday afternoon. I found the staff really friendly, cheerful, and helpful! What really stood out was at the checkout, the cashier noticed that the tortillas I picked up were crushed/ripped, so he rang his bell to ask someone on the sales floor to grab me a new package. So that's what the bell is for! :) I was really impressed by this and it was soo fast, like magic really! Trader Joe's is a novelty for us Canadians, but I don't think my glee for visiting any TJ location will ever go away. read more

These people are just nice and really seem to live their jobs. I love when the flyer magazine comes in the mail, I actually make my kids read it. We'll call this new store TJ3. Smell the newness of this store, the carts are all in working order, no wiggly front wheel. The isle are wider, the store is brighter, new TJ associates eager to please you, their customer. Alas, it may be a new store but the old familiar items are stocked on the shelves, waiting to be placed into that new cart. The fat free feta, salty and briny, just waiting to be tossed onto a Greek flatbread. The California Estate extra virgin olive oil, cloudy from its unfiltered first cold pressing, waiting to flavor a peppery rocket salad. The pretzel bagels, waiting to be smeared with Trader Joe's Seville orange marmalade, after a trip to the toaster. The super fresh Bok Choy, ready for a brush of a little olive oil, dusted with TJ's pink sea salt and roasted in the oven. The red raspberries waiting to be covered in TJ's honey Greek yogurt. All my favorite items under one big, brand new roof. I've read reviews that exclaim that TJs is a glorified Aldi's. Don't listen to their overhyped BS. Trader Joe's is quality food sold at cheaper prices that the Greedy Eagle. One thing I don't like is how Trader Joe's is perceived as a Heath food store. It's far from the truth, look at the labels, high fat, high sodium, but if you know what's healthy and what to look for then Trader Joe's will fit nicely into your weekly shopping. TJ3 is further from me than TJ Original and TJ Squared, and for me it's a drive out the much hated McKnight road, so I won't frequent it as much. But it was nice to be one of the first people to help baptize it. read more

Trader Joe's is finally in the North Hills! This one just opened in the new complex at Mccandless Crossing. Just a heads up- it's picked up a lot of attention and gets busy at the usual hours (weekends and evenings). That being said, similar to how I feel with many other TJ's, I love it. Interesting items and a much cheaper price tag than Whole Foods. Plus the produce is often dramatically cheaper than Giant Eagle. Again, as per usual, the service is fantastic here. Couldn't be more excited to have a TJ's finally up North. read more

I went to the store in the North Hills today. I have to admit I don't shop there very often, but that has changed. I stopped in to buy a few things. As I was checking out I was telling the cashier that I don't come there often but I was visiting my mom at Passavant. When she checked me out she ask me to wait a moment. This is by far the best place to grocery shop in the North Hills. Staff is always so friendly and every time I go in I come out with a new and exciting item to try. Also, you can sample anything (with the exception of raw foods, frozen foods, and alcohol)! They also have a very generous return policy. They have a false reputation for being expensive and overpriced, but this simply isn't the case. Because they buy directly from the supplier, (almost) everything is Trader Joe's brand. This cuts the costs tremendously for the customer. I can't believe I was grocery shopping anywhere else. read more

AMAZING! I am a big fan of Trader Joe's anyway--I love that you can get organic produce and quality gourmet ingredients and snacks for a fraction of what other stores (Whole Foods, etc.) would charge. This location is by far the best in Pittsburgh. I am equidistant to this and the East Liberty store, but I will be frequenting this one from now on for a few reasons: the parking lot is spacious, the store is larger (and the aisles are wider!), and it's in a less congested area of the city--so if you're driving, it's just much more convenient. I have also found the staff to be very welcoming and proud of their new store--I would be too; it's awesome! read more

Gotta love Trader Joe's! TJ's food makes me feel like an actual adult buying fancy, healthy groceries and still, I end up walking out of there spending significantly less than I would for a comparable amount of food at Giant Eagle. The employees at this location are friendly as expected and the parking lot is always crowded, but usually not completely full. I like shopping here because they have all of the basics, plus some unique and/or difficult to find things. I'm not exactly an adventurous eater and I've found some cool things here that I wouldn't have tried otherwise. My recent Trader Joe's score was a jar of real manuka honey for $10! Their $1 greeting cards and cheap flowers are amazing, too. I love that I can treat myself to pretty flowers and delicious food on a 20-something budget. read more

To begin: I. Friggin'. Love. Trader Joe's. Since I crossed the rivers and moved from the South to the North Hills about 2 years ago, I find myself subconsciously comparing my local dives from where I grew up in Whitehall to where I now live in McCandless. The Mt. Lebanon TJ's was new and exciting when it moved in, and that is the only TJ's I had been familiar with otherwise. Nice store, but I feel the location here in McCandless goes above and beyond. Honestly, it's a no-brainer to give this Trader Joe's location a 5-star review. Their employees are hands-down some of the nicest, most approachable people you could ever ask for help. I've had my shoes complimented. I've had long conversations about applying for, and working two, jobs. I've discussed German kuchen and apple cider in great detail at the demo table. They're in general very cheerful and easy to talk to. That makes a huge difference in the entire store environment (and come on, how much more fun must it be to wear Hawaiian shirts to work every day?). My mom was always describing Trader Joe's as some magical paradise of groceries I'll never find at any other place, and I didn't believe her until I went to my formerly local Mt. Lebanon location for myself. TJ's really prides themselves on offering unique goods - she was totally right. I love that their brand is very fun and casual... this shows through in the store as well. I can always find something with unusual or interesting ingredients right alongside traditional produce. Plus, the prices are perfectly in my budget. Cheaper than Giant Eagle by a longshot, but with more quirky and diverse offerings than Aldi. The McCandless location is always clean and I've only ever had an issue finding something there once, which an employee was able to clear up in a minute or two. For a relatively new store, it seems like the staff has been managing the busy traffic (indoor and out) quite well. I am always happy to go there because I know they make things hassle-free. This is one of the more spacious TJs I've had the chance to shop in, which made it surprisingly easy to maneuver through, even on a busy Sunday afternoon. This store had everything stocked that was on my list, and even some fun things that weren't on my list. While there weren't any opportunities for samples, as they seemed to have been depleted with no suggestion as to when they would be replenished. After a great shopping trip, with great produce options, the team member checking out gave my daughter a lovely little roll of about 8 valentines stickers on it. I always come to this Trader Joe's. Such great customer service and always love how organized and clean it is. It always lives up to the Trader Joe's standards. But what impressed me this time is, they ran out of the wine country chicken salad. It is so good! However, they had the guilt free chicken salad in stock. I decided to give that a try. When I was with the cashier, I asked him his thoughts on the guilt free chicken salad. And he said that he never tried it. I told him I like wine country but it is all gone. He let me know that if I didn't like it, I could return it. Then, during the transaction, he said he is going to give it to me for free so that I can try it with no issues and not worry about the return. He said he knows how frustrating it can be to try something new with the potential of not liking it. I was so happy he allowed me to try it for free. He gave good customer service. And in my humble opinion, used good judgement to allow the customer to try for free. I am certain he doesn't doesn't do this all the time but went on his feelings in how to handle the situation to keep a regular customer happy. Especially, because they were out of something I usually buy and trying something else that is similar. Needless to say, I didn't care for the guilt free chicken salad, but was so appreciative of his customer service. My experience with him, as well as others has always been top notch. read more

I've loved Trader Joe's since the first time I stepped foot in there. But never felt the urge to review until now. The other day I stopped in, picked up quite a few goodies. At the cash register, I was chatting with the cashier, Heather, and a lovely young lady bagging my groceries. Heather asked me what my Christmas plans were. I told her I'm going to be having a tough one, as a close loved one needs to have surgery. She disappeared for a few minutes and brought me this absolutely gorgeous Christmas bouquet. She said something to the effect that these flowers may not make up for my crappy Christmas but she wanted me to have them. I told her she didn't have to do that! I don't know if she did this out of her own pocket or if Trader Joe's supports this, but this gesture brought me to tears. It was one of the sweetest things anyone has done!!! I was already a loyal customer but this brought me hope that there still is goodness in this world!! read more

I love Trader Joe's and it pains me to give this location only 3 stars but this particular store leaves something to be desired. They are often out of the items that I always buy (Multigrain Joe-O's, chocolate covered almonds to mention two). When I ask I always here, "we'll have more tomorrow". That would be ok if I lived in the area but I make a road trip from Youngstown once a month to shop here so "tomorrow" is not very helpful. My last couple TJ's runs have been to a store near Cleveland as I was tired of being disappointed by this one. read more

I've tried the east liberty location many times and I just really couldn't enjoy it.. Too crowded and small. I'm not sure if this location is bigger, but there weren't as many people everywhere. I was actually able to browse!! I checked out everything and loved how they had different varieties to offer. They had better items than other discount grocery stores (rice vinegar for example & 4 different kinds of mustard, a block of mozzarella marinating in oil and seasonings!) is it worth the 25 minute trip here for me? I think so. I'm excited for my next Trip here and grocery shopping isn't a task I enjoy so that's saying a lot. read more

Okay, so I am addicted to shopping at Trader Joe's. Before, it was next to impossible to visit on a regular basis, since the closest location for me was in East Liberty. This one is much more convenient!! Located in the new McCandless Cluster f, it's probably best to shop at off times. The store is clean, bright and well laid out. I also love the customer service here. Everyone is so helpful and friendly, and happy to offer up recommendations and suggestions. I am always leaving the store with more than what is on my list. Produce is fresh, live the selection of bagged salads and veggies. Love the selection of nuts and freeze dried fruits. There is a great selection of frozen foods. And the cheese selection is incredible. Love this store!! read more

This is a fantastic Trader Joe's, the best in the area in my opinion! McCandless Crossing is continuing to grow and offers a lot of other great businesses so that heading to this area is one stop shopping. The parking lot is very accessible, and the inside of the store is large and spacious. The Pittsburgh city store is closer to my home, and if you've ever been there, you understand why I appreciate how large this store is! Everything is laid out very well, and I even discovered a few new items that hadn't caught my eye at other locations. I also believe that this store has plenty of room if PA ever allows beer and wine to be sold in a grocery store. Cross your fingers that will change soon! read more

Love TJs. I am there weekly ( and sometimes more often). Great staff. Wish they would bring back lemongrass rice. And wish cauliflower pizza crusts were always in stock. Only issue is that the individually packed, roaster, no salt almonds have been less than good the last three batches...not sure why. Over baked and tasted "old". Love everything else! read more

This store is in the Wexford area in a large shopping center, just across from the new restaurant, BJ's. Fully stocked, new, well laid out. Employees are actually trained to interact with customers about their store and food products. It is out of my way but we do get there occassionally. read more

I've shopped at this Trader Joe's plenty of times, since it's so close to where my mother lives. Everything is still new, and the layout is incredibly open and airy. The produce section is also much better than my usual Trader Joe's in East Liberty. The only thing that would make this store better is an alcohol section...sob. The employees here are just as friendly and helpful as the ones from other locations, but they seem to be a bit older. I wonder if they hire for the demographics of different stores? Anyways, coming to this particular Trader Joe's is always a wonderful experience due to it being larger, newer, and less busy, so I know I'll be back many times to come. read more

To quote one of my favorite '90s rappers, "Trader Joe''s is the shiznit"!! My bf used to shop at Trader Joe's all the time when he lived in the DC area and he built up the hype to me so much-my expectations were very high going in. Even though my expectations were pretty sky-high, Trader Joe's lived up to his hype (minus the fact they don't sell wine and beer at this location like they do in DC). Let me get the couple of criticisms I have out of the way first: what's up with the parking situation there?! We drove down every aisle without any luck until someone along the side of the building finally vacated their spot, allowing us to sneak right in. Yes, they share a lot with Longhorn's Steakhouse but still...... and then upon walking in, I first noticed how physically small the store is and it was PACKED with wall to wall people, making it hard to move without hitting the other patrons. When I saw the pricing and the quality of products, I understood why it was so crowded! Produce was cheaper than Giant Eagle-bananas were $0.19/pound and organic apples were also cheaper than Giant Eagle. They have all kinds of organic products and products made with no trans fats and mostly natural ingredients. All cheaper than Whole Foods and Giant Eagle! Price is always a consideration for me, even when trying to eat healthily, and TJ's allows you to eat more naturally without blowing your entire paycheck a la Whole Foods. Staff was super helpful and friendly! My bf was looking for TJ's biscuits and could only find the crescent rolls and cinnamon rolls, but when he asked an employee if they had any biscuits, she went into the back and checked for him! Unfortunately it was confirmed they were all out of their inventory, but going that extra step and checking was something you would never expect at most grocery stores. I ended up purchasing all natural cat food (hopefully my persnickety feline appreciates it!), steel cut oatmeal (only $1.99!), Laughing Cow spreadable garlic and herb cheese, a package of 9 dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and wheat crackers for $14! My boyfriend got organic soup, bananas, organic apples, organic chicken, dark chocolate covered marshmallows, a birthday card (FYI they only sell their own cards-very cute ones too!), vegetable pasta, curry sauce, 2 bottles of a V8-like drink (these were mega size too), and sparkling blueberry cider all for about $40. He said the TJ's he is used to would have coffee samples (along with the $2 chuck-get with it already PA!) and yesterday they were sampling a frozen entree of orange chicken. I noted they had a ton of frozen fish (ahi tuna, mahi mahi, salmon, halibut, tilapia,etc) and also lots of frozen entrees (example was a salmon with pesto sauce and spinach parmesan orzo for $4.50) too. I'm so excited to do my shopping here now as opposed to Giant Eagle! Also, their coffee is delicious and the k cups are $5.99 for a pack-awesome deal! Their hours are also great, 7 days a week 8am-9pm. Don't just buy the hype of TJ's-check it out for yourself! read more

The most helpful staff of all of the TJs in the city--by far. I'm not sure if it's because it's so new, but I've been there three times now and two out of the three times the staff has been helpful. The first time, they were out of single-limes. The staff went in the back and didn't have any and gave me one from the bag and gave me one. The second time was through the chit-chat at the checkout. I learned you can freeze their ready-to-make pizza crusts which I had asked before at the East Liberty store and the staff didn't know. The like how spacious it is. Much better than East Liberty. Their product selection in what I call the "normal foods" (i.e., dried pasta, spices, sauces) does leave a little to be desired, though. Hopefully they expand that. read more

Let me just say I LOVE trader joes and their prices! However I'm only giving 3 stars because: Their bagged salad lettuce goes bad incredibly fast and well before the use by date. While most of the produce is usually fresh and awesome I have had moldy strawberries. The big reason for the 3 stars is the logistics of "checking out" It's an absolute nightmare with kids, and I assume a lot of families shop here with children. First off the carts are small... Way too small for more than one child, you can't even fit an infant car seat in the basket of the cart. So it makes it difficult to shop here if you've got a toddler and a baby. The checkout lines are confusing... And a little awkward... Do you keep your kid in the cart the whole time or take them out or what?! The bagging area is crowded and not well thought through. There is very little space to bag your groceries and even less space for your cart. read more

You can't help but Trader Joe's! They are a good source of cheap gluten free food and the best gluten free bread and cupcakes! The cupcakes are so good people don't realize they are gluten free, which is something usually accomplished by baking them yourself! I just wish they sold wine and beer like they do where I'm from! read more

Enjoy shopping at Trader Joes, lots of prepared foods in the freezer section. Also, many house brands of staple foods to stock your pantry. I love sampled items in the back too. Easy in and out at the McCandless Crossing store. So happy to have a Trader Joe's in the area. read more
