I visited the Trak Shak in Homewood, AL today to replace my Nike Pegasus Premium running shoes. I spent about 25 minutes in the store browsing and waiting for assistance. During that time, I saw several staff members walking around, but no one approached me to offer help. What stood out most was that other customers -- including individuals who entered the store after I did -- were asked if they needed assistance, while I was not acknowledged at all. Customer service is a big part of the retail experience, especially at a specialty running store where fit and guidance matter. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I would have to rate this location a 1 out of 5. I hope this feedback helps improve attentiveness and consistency in customer service moving forward. read more

Hey I had a pretty good experience at this location today! In the past when I've been here I felt a lot of concentrated pressure to let the experts funnel me into an expensive unwanted choice that I later regretted. It's the downside to letting them check your fit & gait because then they only give you a few specific options and there's heavy pressure to buy one of them. Never mind if you don't like any of these options. Today I decided to give it another shot because I know they have a quality selection. I went into the store with my guard up but there was no need. I was greeted by two young guys that made it a fun & inviting shopping experience. They were the perfect balance of attentive but without any specific pressure. I spent about $180 on shoes & socks & left happy knowing that I was assisted in making my own selection. Happy day at the Homewood Trak Shak. I only visit this shop once every few years . . . Every time I do I remember why I don't shop here more often. The return/exchange policy is out-dated and overly strict in my opinion. You can bring something back, untouched, the very next day, and all you get is an exchange or store credit. I understand returns can lend themselves to abuses, especially with shoes and inserts; but it is critical that these things fit and be comfortable as well. It's pretty easy to tell when a shoe has been worn excessively and is no longer "like new". To be fair, the folks that work there are very nice, knowledgable, and eager to help. No issues there. My advice? If you're considering buying something, do your best to evaluate it in the store unless you want your money tied up. read more

I have always loved the Trak Shak. They truly care about the Runningham Community. I will always remember during this past Mercedes training block how they opened up their store early (6am!) for warmth for all us runners during the cold winter months. If they don't have what I need, they usually at least TRY to help you in some sort of way. They are very knowledgeable about their shoes which is a huge help! I've been in here 2-3 times to get walking shoes but I have largely been ignored bc I'm over 50 , not a runner and obviously out of shape woman . They'll wait on me but o had to initiate any questions bc they're "running snobs " which means they are all in this clique like group that pays attention only to people like themselves ! I've seen this the 3 times I spent over 160 on shoes to walk in - the guy was almost rude but obviously disinterested in any attempt to help me with the proper support etc ! After the last visit I decided I'd buy directly from Hoka bc I can return them and they actually at least have loads on online help to help you get the best shoe for you ! I refuse to buy from a store that ignores me . There's a bike sho close by that does the same exact thing - employees stay in a group taking amongst themselves bc they've already decided I'm not a "serious " biker - maybe not but I also just spent 2000 online on an electric bike- I'd have much preferred to buy local! The people that own these places need to encourage older and out of shape people to feel at least welcomed into the store ! Send some person in undercover that is over 55 abs not an athlete and you'll see what I'm talking about . I had one young man that was so shockingly helpful , I made sure to get l his card bc it was such a change ! I'll write about him on that page - just wantec to say the whole swim bike run community seems very stuck up but these days they need $$ to stay in business. I don't expect anything but proper service , especially if I'm spending $ in your shop and the runner you're talking to is in your biking club. After an epic failure trying to find running shoes at a large chain sporting goods store, I reluctantly decided to try The Trak Shak. With some foot/arch issues, I needed a better shoe and worried that the cost here might be too high. Well, here is what happened... I was greeted immediately by Michael. Within about 5 minutes I got a side-by-side comparison of 4 shoes that he picked for me based on a quick assessment of my feet and feet concerns. All the shoes were very good, but one was amazing. The price? The exact same that I almost spent for a lesser show at the chain store. Luckily, the chain store did not have my size or any service. While I do not live in Birmingham, I will plan to get shoes here in future visits. The Trak Shak seems to cover all of your running needs. I've purchased both shoes and compression socks from these guys and was happy with my service both times. That's all fine and dandy, but it's not what I think of when Trak Shak pops into my head. You will rarely see a run in Birmingham that isn't sponsored by these guys. Not only that, but they always seem to be an integral part of training for a race. They are a starting point for weekly organized runs through Homewood. They provide free water and Gatorade at the start/finish line and some houses along the route have water as well. I start a lot of my runs from here, whether they are with a group or by myself. read more

The Trak Shak has failed to train their employees in any sales skills. I was not asked a single question other than, "Are you looking for something today?" I had to pull information out of the person piece by piece...including pricing. I told him my intention to purchase a pair of socks, since I was wearing pumps. He offered to let me try the shoes on barefoot. I really hope no one else tried on the shoes I purchased. I'm not certain that I bought the right pair of shoes; I bought a pair that felt okay and left quickly. This was my first poor Trak Shak experience, but it was bad enough that I won't be back. We're a family of five. I have three children--two of which wear adult sizes and outgrow them every couple of months. However, we won't be going to Trak Shak. read more

The track shak is a solid place to come find some footware, they carry a high quality but small range of stock for both men's and women's, this store not only has shoes but other running accessories. I love the Trak Shak folks. They are practically family by now. I've bought every pair of running shoes there since Cross Country in High School (when it was actually in a house). Their regular Wednesday Night runs (5:30 at the curve) and involvement in so many local events is a testament to the fact that Val, Scott, Jeff, Tracy and crew love and support the Birmingham running community. I was greeted very quickly after walking into Trak Shak. Cortney did a great job finding the exact shoe I was looking for. She helped me decide which size I was, which was no small task since I tend to be an indecisive person in these types of matter. He waited on my husband but didn't want to....he acted very annoyed that we had come in while he was waiting on another customer....he never even offered to get a shoe for me to try...the store was highly recommended by a friend..and honestly after working in retail for more than 20yrs myself I would never treat a customer the way I was treated.... very unhappy...hope others have a better experience. read more

I always try to support local businesses, but my experience with Trak Shak varies wildly depending on who I deal with. One guy set me up with shoes that enabled me to keep running after a nasty bout with plantar. Other times it seems like the staff just can't be bothered. Today was the last straw. I stood around for a while until some college kids came out and begrudgingly asked what I wanted (and only because I made uncomfortable eye contact with them for a while) and then didn't really seem too interested in helping me find what would work for me. I went in here a couple of times to pick up some things for the running enthusiasts in my life. One experience was very normal, they didn't have the exact shoe I was looking for, but pointed me towards a similar shoe. The next experience was much more memorable: Whoever was in charge had to finish their Frisbee game on the sidewalk before they came in the store to help me, and then they were acting like they were doing me a favor when I bought a $175 pair of shoes. I'm going to sum this up real quick. My girlfriend and I are looking to move to the Homewood, AL area, and thought about stopping into The Trak Shak because they seem to be a small shop in the area, and I neeed new trail shoes. Not to mention, there was a ad to stop in from 5pm-8pm to receive a pair of free socks. Well, we arrived approximately 6:20pm and the sock people were already gone, which is fine however, the people who were running the shop avoided us at all cost! When we walked in there was no greeting, no how are you, no how can I help you... nothing but a group of men standing off to the right hand side shooting the crap. The display of shoes on the left hand side were not visible because the lights were off! I walked into the dark room to see if there was anything of interest and still no greeting. I waited a total of two minutes and decided to leave. I walked out of the dark room, grabbed my friend and left. It is obvious we were interrupting the "good ole boys, good time", and they were far from interested in capturing a sale. Long story short, they lost a $140 sale because I was ready to buy (and did somewhere else), and I will NEVER be back. read more

I have been purchasing running shoes, clothing, and gear etc. here since 2006 or 2007 so I am now on a first-name basis with some of the employees. That being said, there is a reason I keep going back to the Trak Shak. They will work with you to find the right running shoe. The first time I went there, I needed help because some shoes I purchased at another store made my big toe nails fall off on both feet (yes, it was gross). They explained what caused the problem and got me into the right shoe. I have been running comfortably ever since that first visit. Im not a fan of this place. Everything seems at least 20% to 30% more expensive here. Their policy of not allowing customers to get a refund on returned items is not consistent with a majority of similarly situated stores. I will never purchase anything else here for that reason. The staff is very nice and helpful. But why in the world do they not put price tags on the shoes? Its a boutique store with loyal customers, the majority of whom I imagine never have to return any merchandise. read more
