It honors the hospital and staff which performed heroic work at the height of the AIDs epidemic at this facility which was close by. It served the area for more than 150 years and had quite the history from it's start back in 1849 until it's closure in 2010. The park is well maintained with plenty of shade trees and benches throughout.

For a small park in a busy area it feels safe and clean. There's also an AIDS memorial. Among the features is the fountain. It's a popular spot in the summer. The other main structure is the AIDS Memorial. It's dedicated to the victims of the disease. The park was the site of the hospital that played an important part in fighting and learning about it. A few parts of the hospital are still here. The oldest part was turned into apartments, while a newer part is a non emergency care location. If you're around Washington Square Park you should also make your way here. It's a nice park but it's also very meaningful. There's a few cafes and restaurants close to here too.

When you arrive at the "nature walk", you walk down a long concrete path surrounded by walls with little portholes in them, a kind of nautical theme. Then you arrive at the waterfront to an up-close view of a recycling plant, with stories-high piles of aluminum, steel, iron, etc. on the point across the creek. Behind that is Long Island City, not exactly known for its architecture or beauty. But you're on the water, and there's hardly anyone else there. Not bad for a city of 8.5 million. Then you walk down some more concrete paths to an area with markers by the bushes and trees telling you about them. I'm sure it's prettier other times of year, but in mid-April it wasn't impressive. Then it dumps you out in another industrial zone that takes awhile to loop around and get back to civilization. It was worth doing once.

The best part about swimming here is the lack of people, the worst part is the abundance of large barges. The water itself is mild refreshing and interestingly enough has a molasses like viscosity & taste. Wow 2 for 1! As for the trail itself, be careful and make sure to bring a weapon, I am convinced this place was where Melvin Junko first turned into the Toxic Avenger. Its kind of a post-modern, pro-concrete, anti-nature, sewage-friendly, stroll past office buildings, a truck parking lot, and down to the Newtown Creek via ghats. Blink and you'll feel like you're in Varanasi.

It's like being in the club damn near. It's cooked. The Eastside highway, in contrast, is so slept on. It doesn't take itself too serious. Yeah it doesn't have boujee ass playgrounds or man made beaches every couple blocks, but it's beautiful in its own right. It just shows up, puts the work in, and clocks out. It doesn't need the glitz and glamor like your beloved Westside Highway. It doesn't need the accolades. It just lets its game do the talking. The track is also flying under the radar. I've lived in the East Village for a year and a half and didn't even know it existed. We held our own EV Olympics here over the weekend and I couldn't have been more shocked about how nice it is. It's a polyurethane track that is comprised of multiple layers for optimal performance. On Saturday, I was getting DESTROYED in the 100M dash by my 2 most athletic friends. That's how you get better though. I'm coming back for gold in 2028. Also, sprinting 100M a few times when you haven't sprinted in a minute really shocks the body, let me tell you. I'm still feeling it. On Sunday, I came back and just walked around the track for an hour, called my Mom, Dad, Brother, and girlfriend. While yapping away and logging steps, I was able to enjoy the east river view, open air, and the men's soccer league game that was going on in the middle. I can breathe out here. EASTSIDE STAND UP! The park is a great place to take in the scenic views of the East River and it offers a well paved riverfront pathway, making it perfect for a walk or a run. The park is also equipped with a track, baseball field, soccer field, and basketball courts, making it a great place for sport activities. It's not nearly as crowded as the Hudson River Park so if you're looking for a more lowkey alternative, the East River Park is the way to go!

Acknowledging those are my baselines, it's refreshing to come across a public park in the city that isn't seething with hordes of people -- locals and tourists alike. It was such a pleasure to just sit for a spell on one of the ample benches and finish my bubble tea from Chelsea Market while enjoying the cool breeze. I fell into a reverie, lulled by the dappled light filtering through the towering shady trees that protected us from the glare of the scorching summer sun. Although Abingdon Square's located in the heart of the West Village, the sounds of the city and the traffic outside of the park just gently blend into the background. I wish we had more serene reprieves from Manhattan's hustle and bustle akin to this little oasis.
