We have dined here on four occasions. Each time the food has gotten worse and the owner has gotten more rude. Service Is terrible, as they do not listen and follow instructions when you order - they bring you the wrong thing. (twice this happened to us and they acted as though it was our fault when we heard one another order our meal). On our last visit- it was not busy and the two servers stood gawking at us the whole time we ate our meal. Gianni said at the bar staring us down. We will not be back! read more

The excellent ingredients can't make up for the poor ratio of flavors. It's as if the people working here have never eaten actual Italian food & it's been way too long for the owner. 1st the owner was really pushing the burrata cheese appetizer, it looked good, but to our surprise, instead of being balsamic, it was covered in a sauce that tasted like teriyaki & served with crispy sesame toast. It was a bazaar combination. The carbonara has the pork cheeks, true Italians look for, but it absolutely overpowered the noodles & sauce. The béchamel sauce in the spinach lasagna was excellent, but the whole dish was ruined by putting way too much cheese, making it WAY TOO SALTY & the gnocchi is hand made WHEN YOU ORDER IT! But they were so stingy with the pesto that 1/2 were left plain. It's unfortunate, but the food here is too far off base to really enjoy, or justify the cost. read more

The owner was a bit high-strung when we arrived. I'm not sure what, but something was stressing him. It made the entrance greeting and seating a bit uncomfortable. I thought the food was a bit bland for Italian food. The restaurant layout was unique, but the chairs were very uncomfortable. I wish I could post some redeeming qualities about this place, but I would suggest you save the cab fair and go elsewhere. Zihua has plenty of other Italian restaurants that are far and away better than this one. read more

Food at best ok this is coming from an Italian that cooks and eats at Italian restaurants Flavor is seriously lacking Service was messed up told we had to seat out near the street due to inside was full. Inside was next to empty the entire time. The wait was too long, which makes it hard to enjoy the food... To be fair the owner had told us when we reserved we would need to be patient, as he had many tables reserved at the same time, but it was really exceedingly long (2.5 hours since we got there until we got the last plate on the table). Food was good, pastas fresh and sauces (pomodoro, pesto, etc) great flavor. The above reviews are clearly fake. If I could give a this place negative stars I would! Some of the worst food I have ever eaten. The owner was so rude to us from the get go. We came in and he asked us rather rudely if we had reservations and we said we did not. You would thought we smelled by the look on his face. (the place was not even a quarter of the way full - 2 tables. This was @ 7:30 and they closed the kitchen in one hour. He proceeds to seats us in the worst seats directly next to the kitchen at a very small table. We order a Caprese Salad and it was made with thick tasteless tomatoes with large cubes of tasteless cheeses and whole green olives on it. Now I know I am in Mexico having Italian food and have traveled all over the world - I have never had a Caprese Salad like that! The meal just gets worst...After that I was. treated to over cooked pasta with way to much sauce, reminiscent of Spaghetti Ohs one had in a school cafeteria in the 80's. My son orders a pork chop and it was clearly frozen and hen deep fryer in a fryer with old oil (gross)! The owner was beyond rude when we complain. I feel compelled to tell him he could not be Italian if he is serving this kind of food;). Side note if he is Venetian as he claims, I am not sure way he is serving southern Italian cuisine in this really terrible way. Maybe he hate southern Italy, who knows? Bottom line don't go! How often do you find an Italian restaurant run by a Venetian and married to a Mexican wife trained in Italy? Never! What a great find. Gianni has his own garden behind his restaurant home and his staff is super polite. Fantastico lasagna and carbonara. My wife and two daughters and I came here after reading the reviews and we were not disappointed. We ordered some white wine to whet our palettes. Although the meal comes with fresh bread and an herb infused butter, we started off with the bruschetta and the caprese salad. Everything was very fresh and delicious. For dinner, one daughter had the lasagna and the other the spaghetti with pomodoro. The pasta tasted fresh (was it hand made?) and the sauces amazing. I managed to scoop up some of the sauce with the bread before my daughter devoured it. My wife and I shared an order of spaghetti carbonara and an order of the shrimp. After my wife tasted the spaghetti, I had to order my own because she didn't want to share! My shrimp was excellent. The portions were more in line with European standards, so don't expect them to be large. Lastly we had desserts: I shared the cannolis with one daughter, the other daughter had ice cream, and my wife had the cream puffs. Again, my wife wouldn't share because it was so good! Just average ice cream and good but not fantastic cannolis. I kind of wished I'd ordered the tiramisu based on the reviews. Overall, an excellent meal at a great price. Trattoria Gianni is a wonderful addition to Zuhua's vibrant restaurant scene and has clearly raised the bar for quality Italian food. Gianni and his wife, the chef, have created a wonderful space and menu and execute it all to perfection. They and their well trained staff are attentive, warm and helpful. The space, a lovely courtyard with a nearby open kitchen is lovely. Spacing between tables allows for quiet conversations. The menu is a mixture of Italian traditional offerings from appetizers, salads, pastas, and mains. Our salads and pasta dishes were perfectly executed and accompanied by their delicious home made bread, which is otherwise a shortcoming in Zihua restaurants. And the tiramisu was exquisite: all ingredients are made on site and it shows in how lift yet flavorful it is. A real gem. And a great value read more
