DO NOT ORDER ICE TEA HERE UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO PAY 6.50USD FOR ONE GLASS WITHOUT ANY REFILLS. I PAID 19.50 FOR 3 GLASSES OF ICED TEA. Never in a million years would I have guess that it was 6.00 for ice tea and it came with no refills. Beer, wine, heck even a cocktail would have been cheaper. To say I was shocked when the bill came, would be a giant understatement. Are tea leaves not as plentiful in Mexico as the US? Ok, the great tea caper aside, this was a great little restaurant with an amazing view (ask for a rail seat when making reservations so you get the full view/experience). We ordered the flaming cheese which tasted as fabulous as it was to watch it being made at our table side. We had the taritas (marinated fresh fish) dish as an appetizer as well and we had the cheese on the bread with the fish. Try it, and thank me later. I had the clam linguine which done perfectly. I loved that they added pieces of clams to the sauce rather than just having clams standing alone in their shells. My boyfriend had mahi mahi which he said was delicious but overdone a tad. We were too full for dessert so we can't comment on their selection. Service was a bit on the slow side with our food coming out at an odd pace. I had to ask for refills, but maybe that was a good thing since I was paying, unbeknownst to me, $6.50 each for the refills. Make reservations in advance as this place fills up. First on our table was the **Farfalle ai Due Salmoni**--bow-tie pasta adorned with both Norwegian smoked salmon and Chilean fresh salmon, flamed with brandy in a creamy-tomato sauce. The delicate balance of flavors was a revelation, each bite bursting with the richness of the sea and the subtle warmth of the brandy. Next, we had the **Rigatoni alla Sarda**, a hearty dish with home-made Italian sausages, onions, and green peas in a creamy tomato sauce. It was comfort food at its finest, with the robust flavors of the sausage perfectly complemented by the sweetness of the peas and the richness of the sauce. The **Linguine Frutti di Mare** followed, a seafood lover's dream. Linguine tossed with shrimp, mussels, clams, squid, and octopus in a spicy marinara sauce. Each seafood element was cooked to perfection, and the spicy marinara added just the right kick to elevate the dish to something extraordinary. Finally, we indulged in the **Scampi ai Oleo**, jumbo shrimp in a garlic sauce, served with spinach sautéed with garlic and olive oil, and mashed potatoes. "¿Quién dice que no se puede tener una comida italiana fenomenal en México?" Who says you can't have phenomenal Italian food in Mexico? This is probably one of the best Italian meals I've had traveling through at least 12 of the major cities in Mexico. Okay, I never thought I would ever speak (err...write?) these words in my life...but I think I finally got sick of Mexican food. I know, I know, what is wrong with me? I was recently in Zihuatenjo for a wedding and we were there five days. Five days of delicious, mouth watering, Mexican food and drinks, but on the fourth night I just needed something different. So, thanks to Yelp, I found Il Mare. The views are breathtaking and the food is equally as impressive. Based on the dollar signs on Yelp, I thought the food would be pricey, but it wasn't. We ordered the Caprese Salad to start plus a bottle of Chilean Chardonnay. He had the Mahi Mahi special, which was grilled and cooking in a garlic wine sauce, and I ordered the Pasta Arrabiata. I needed veggies and spice. I'm telling you, without a doubt, that was the best Arrabiata I've ever had and it was, wait for it, $9 USD! The service was amazing and very helpful. Couple tips: make a rez and be aware that is is a bit hard to find as it is a tiny sign on the street with steps down into the restaurant. read more

The food is good but I just have really high Italian food standards, I like fresh homemade pasta but again the food is good. We started with a Greek salad, it was very disappointing and the wonderful brushetta. Then had the bolognese, sauce was good and portion was massive but just nothing remarkable. We also had the sausage rigatoni. It was the best of the two. Sausage is homemade and there was a ton of it. You do not leave hungry. Our oldest had tortellini with spicy sauce. I didn't try the tortellini (it was homemade) but I tried the sauce. There was a lot of it, just how I like so I added it to my bolognese to give it more flavor and that did the trick. I was very happy to be able to have italian here in wondrous Mexico and they did it up right for me. First, and most awesome are the views of this restaurant. You are basically outside but up on a hill so you catch the fantastic ocean down below you while you dine. Next was the great chardonnay that I consumed a few glasses of.. it was cold enough and buttery enough. I've been drinking cervezas and margaritas while staying in this town so this was another nice find here. And, bread at the table? My, how welcoming for a change - in the days now where you have to beg for your bread and then expect to pay for it also! Not here. Finally spaghetti and clam sauce??? And done without a cream sauce or a tomato sauce? Tasting like only delicious clams instead? That's how I like it the best! The bread and "home made" pasta were absolutely not home made, but the chunkier rustic bolognese sauce was interesting because we enjoy mixtures of meat cuts. Tremendous views of the bay combined with excellent food and service are a combination that can't be beat. I tried one of the pasta dishes - it was a zesty tomato sauce with guinciale that was absolutely yummy. Started with a Caesar salad that was served with whole, crispy fresh romaine lettuce, house-made dressing shaved parmesan and croutons. A couple of margaritas on the rocks were great as well. Was visiting here with friends for the weekend and happened to be referred over here for dinner. Amazing view of the ocean and very breezy, cool environment. The waiters were very friendly and the food was good! We all pretty much had the catch of the day which was a smaller, thin cut of tuna with mashed potatoes and spinach. We were the only table here next to another family of four but it was odd that this restaurant was somewhat deserted on a Friday night. Decently priced, good food, good company and a great view! Both times I had the grilled octopus which was excellent, and a greek salad. I did not try the pasta. Octopus is something very difficult to find in Los Angeles, so it was a real treat. The view is outstanding and the waiters are very kind and attentive. The wine by the glass was good and overall the meal was reasonable for the quality and location. I had the chicken parmigiana and it was just okay. The tuna fish my son had was a bit better though. Portion sizes were good and prices pretty reasonable. Wine selection was not very good but they did have some expensive Italian wines that we did not try. The view is great as you are on a cliff overlooking the bay. Can't complain about that. Service was good but there were only a few people in the restaurant. If you are staying close to this restaurant then it might be worth a try but don't go to great lengths to dine here. read more

This was our third visit to Zihuatenejo and our fourth visit to Il Mare. You wouldn't think to have Italian food while in vacationing in Mexico, but this place is so good, we can't pass it by. Between the six of us, we had scampi, pork chops, lamb, and pastas. All of it fresh and cooked perfectly. And the service is spot on. Meh. Will not return and can't recommend. Killer view though- so perhaps just a drink at sunset is in order. We were a party of six, choosing the place for a birthday celebration. All six persons agreed that it failed to meet expectations for a fine meal, let alone a special occasion one. I ordered two appetizers, a filet mignon carpaccio and the caprese salad. Terrible. The beef was soaked too long in something acidic and it completely camouflaged the meat flavor. The tomatoes for the caprese salad were hard, barely pink/un-ripe. They should not have offered it knowing they didn't have good tomatoes! Also ordered was the catch of the day, Mahi-Mahi, which fared the best of all the dishes, and I also tried a passable but not great mussel dish, spaghetti with meat sauce and a shrimp entree. Dessert followed suit, with a forgettable chocolate cake and frozen lime dish. Too bad, it was recommended to us but given that we all tried diverse dishes and they were nearly all lacking, I can't do the same. read more
