After living in the area for more than 20 years, last night was actually our first visit to Trattoria Villagio in Clifton--and we can't believe we waited this long! Our son brought us to one of his favorite restaurants, and now we completely understand why. We had a wonderful table on the patio, which made for a perfect evening. We started with the Shrimp Bad Bing and the baked meatballs, and both were absolutely delicious. For our entrée, my wife and I shared the Short Rib Ragu, and it was outstanding. We'd order it again in a heartbeat. Our grandkids loved their spaghetti and meatballs, which made everyone at the table happy. The service was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. As we looked around and saw other dishes being served, we realized there are so many more menu items we want to try. We're already looking forward to coming back--and we'll probably be there next Friday for happy hour! If you've never been, don't wait 20 years like we did. Highly recommended! read more

First Time and It won't be my last!! I know this establishment is a Clifton staple, and we've been talking about going to it for a while; oh how we've missed out! From the staff who took our reservation, she was so polite, and concerned if we had any issues that they should be aware of; which we did, we had two with mobility issues, so she made sure we were seated on the first level. We sat on the patio which was a great idea, beautiful outdoor dining area. Our waitress was great, she had full knowledge of the menu and made great recommendations, from appetizers to entrees. We started our experience with orders of the arancini filled with bolognese with peas and mozzarella , Zeppoles with prosciutto and hot honey drizzle, fried artichokes with a garlic aioli, and the house meatballs topped with mozzarella and baked. They were awesome! Deliciousness in every bite! On to our entrees, I ordered the spicy seafood pasta, mussels, shrimp and scallops over homemade tagliatelle with a spicy marinara sauce. The stuffed gnocchi, light fluffy pillows of pasta stuffed with Asiago cheese with a sun dried tomato cream sauce. Chicken Milanese topped with a lemon butter sauce and a tomato conserva and arugula salad. Rigatoni ala Vodka. And our final dish sausage ragu bianco, homemade radiatorre pasta in a spicy sausage ragu sauce. All of the entrees were phenomenal, we each tried some of each!!! We ended our meal with the best Tiramisu we've had in a long time, Basque cheesecake, and a cannoli. From start to finish we were blown away! Enjoyed a fabulous Father's Day dinner here yesterday. The great experience started when the reservation person was kind enough to accommodate us with a first floor reservation. CHECK. She called that morning to ask if we would like to dine on the patio, since it was a beautiful day. CHECK. The young lady who took our order was sweet, smiley and so pleasant. She explained many dishes, made great suggestions, and delivered an ample amount of drinks, bread, dipping sauce, and appetizers. CHECK. We enjoyed meatballs, arancini (fave), fried artichokes, zeppolli (different and delish) appetizers. I thought this place decent! It could be what I got since I feel like everyone got pasta and that looked a lot better. The bread they served was nice and soft. I got the shrimp appetizer which was good. For my main, I got the villagio pizza which was just ok. It was a lot of arugula and the pizza was kind of soft so not the biggest fan. My favorite Italian restaurant of all time!!! If you live "far" from Clifton, this hidden gem is absolutely worth the drive. Where do I even begin? Whether I'm there for brunch, lunch, or dinner, I have to order the mussels in garlic white wine sauce every single time. I still haven't found mussels that beat Trattoria's, and I've tried quite a few, even in Maine. If you're indecisive about your entrée, don't worry. I promise, no matter what you order, you're going to love it. The pasta is freshly made, and you can truly taste the difference. Their espresso martinis are also one of a kind. The staff is always attentive, welcoming, and makes the whole experience feel special. From the outside, the restaurant may look small, but once you're inside, there are different rooms, multiple floors, and even an outdoor dining area that feels like it transports you straight to the streets of Sicily. It's hard to write a review about Trattoria Villagio without sounding like I have a crush on the place. So I guess it's fair to share right off the bat that perhaps I'm a little biased, because maybe I do have a crush on the place. But I'm also not wrong. If you haven't been to Clifton before here in Northern Virginia, it's a tiny little town with a few restaurants, little shops, and the amazing Trattoria Villaggio. If you love Italian food prepared with intention, this is the place for you. Excellent wine selection, great cocktails, the menu has pizza and pasta, salads, tasty items from land and sea, cheese, and delicious appetizers. And let's not forget their raw bar. And I can't remember what they call it, but they've also added a little takeaway place to the right side of the building, it does to-go pizzas, deli sandwiches, and other deliciousness. The ambience inside the restaurant is fantastic, with a bar up front, and seating options downstairs and upstairs. They also have a very excellent outdoor area that is amazing in warmer weather, and it seems they're also activating the space in the colder months with fire pits and movies and other excitement. This restaurant is wonderful for a special occasion, be sure to book early for holidays. But it's also perfect for a random weeknight dinner out. This place is local for us, we live about 5 minutes down the road. Grabbed some lunch yesterday with the family and a friend. When I called, they were not super busy and the hostess easily reserved us a table for our arrival. I ordered their signature dish, the homemade tagliatelle with Bolognese...I have to say that I was disappointed by the Bolognese. It wasn't made with the traditional beef/veal/pork mixture. It was made with an Italian spiced sausage. The flavor of the Italian sausage dominates the dish. It's too strong. I hope management reads this and possibly makes a change. When our friend told us she made a reservation for Trattoria Villagio, I didn't even browse the menu beforehand. I trusted her judgement, but I also wanted to be surprised and impressed and I certainly was. We started out unsure about the indoor seating. It was somewhat stuffy and loud so we asked to be seated outside. The Winter Lounge was both adorable and cozy, with fire pits and large overhead heating elements at the tables. They were showing a variety of Christmas movies on a projector screen. Major shout out to Sadie and Lincoln who were our servers for the night and kept popping in intermittently to check in on us. Our appetizer was the garlic truffle bread. It was soft, fluffy and flavorful. The whipped ricotta on top was creamy and delightful. I wasn't craving pasta, but my friends persuaded me to try one of the specials on the menu. It was the most decadent mushroom ravioli I've ever had. I wish the portion size was larger but I still ended up with some to pack up and take home. Finally, we each got a cannoli to round things off. This is our favorite Italian restaurant! It's a charming restaurant kind of hidden away and we've been there many times but I recently visited again and I loved it! We ordered the peach salad, mussels, pesto fig pizza, and cavatilli. It's such a cozy and homey restaurant and my husband and I love to come here for brunch. We also love the grilled octopus as well! The only caveat was that last time we visited the pasta was not the right type but it might just have been because they were out of the correct pasta. Either way the taste was delicious. read more

I wasn't prepared for the quality of this meal. We had heard of Clifton and this little gem a year or so ago but only recently made the trip. This truly is a marvelous meal in an unlikely place. The atmosphere is fantastic for a date night, or a special occasion, and their patio makes it even great for eating with small kids. On every occasion we were able to sit outside in the courtyard area which is like your on a patio in Italy. We ordered the Garlic Truffle bread which is a big tasty appetizer. The ambiance at Villagio's cannot be beat; it's beautiful, cozy, clean, and the outdoor seating area is my absolute favorite place. The service is friendly, informed, and was very accommodating for my allergies. As someone who is gluten intolerant with a soy allergy my waiter was attentive, and I felt confident about my food options after he spoke with the kitchen about my allergies. I had the chilled asparagus, which was a delicious tapas and a beautiful combination of flavors, and the branzino special with a gluten and soy accommodation side of gluten free pasta. The fish was delicious and beautifully prepared. My guest had the chicken parmigiana and dove into it so quickly that I couldn't even get a picture. Amazing food. I could tell the pasta was house made- so fresh! The sauce for the spicy seafood pasta was delicious, generous amount of mussels & shrimp, and not overly spicy, 5 out of 5. The clam linguine was good but it did leave a bit of an aftertaste, 4 out of 5 Calamari was fried crisp and the two sauces they provided were plenty, 5 out of 5. The salads were all refreshing, generous portion, steak/shrimp cooked to perfection. We chose to eat outside and order from the bar, so we didn't receive the same service. No one came to check on us or refill our water. Overall though, the food was delicious, and if we only had formal reservations and better service, I would have made this 5 stars. We went to Trattoria Italian Villagio to celebrate my husband's birthday and had a great time! Our waiter, Steven, was friendly and attentive. The staff even surprised us with a birthday card and a cannoli with a candle -- such a thoughtful touch. We really enjoyed the Shrimp Badda Bing and arugula/melon appetizers, and the bread with olive oil was delicious. We had a mix of main dishes: the Lobster Ravioli, Casarecce al Granchio, Tagliatelle Bolognese with steak, and Filet Mignon. All the dishes were flavorful, except for the salmon and gnocchi. The pasta that came with the salmon was a bit dry and bland, and the gnocchi was bland and chewy. The ambiance was warm and inviting, though it got a little noisy upstairs where we were seated. I visited Trattoria Villagio for the first time on Mother's Day as a present to my mom and aunt. We waited about 5-10 minutes to be seated after checking in for our reservation. The restaurant has a few tables indoors, a patio with a few more tables with umbrellas, and a second floor with more seating (which I didn't realize existed until I went to the restroom). Our waiter was very friendly, gave us the rundown on his favorite dishes, and at the end of the meal even gave all the ladies at our table a flower in celebration of Mother's Day (such a nice touch by the restaurant!!). For a starter we chose the Villagio Burrata. The burrata was a tiny bit runny but it was good all around! The burrata is drizzled with a hot honey and served with ciabatta. So good! For my entree I had the Cavatelli Arrabbiata, which is served with a good amount of sausage and had a kick of spiciness to it. Others at my table had the pesto fig pizza, another Cavatelli Arrabbiata, and the Fried Chicken Toast. The last entree was reportedly good but the toast was really tough, so my aunt had to essentially eat the chicken, eggs, and avocado spread on their own. She liked it nonetheless, but maybe something to consider if you can't eat the bread because it's so tough. Overall, lovely ambiance, good service, and great food. Definitely worth a try! read more

The restaurant itself is nice on the inside, and there is plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. For appetizers, we ordered the shrimp badda bing and garlic truffle bread. I saw on Resy that the shrimp was recommended, but it was just okay, nothing special. The shrimp was slightly overcooked. The bread was pretty tasty, I liked the ricotta. Wouldn't order again Meatballs - was excited to try this, was very disappointed. The tomato sauce was great, but the meatball itself was a bit dry and not seasoned well. Main Dishes: Chicken parm - significant other did not enjoy this dish. She later got the dish again two days later at Maggiano's (a chain restaurant) and said that one tasted much better. Spicy seafood pasta - underwhelming. I wouldn't recommend it. Presentation of seafood was nice, and the big shrimps, but not a fan of the sauce. Casarecce al Granchio - this was the best dish. Basically crab, spicy tomato cream sauce, chilies and crunch. Ordered w a side of shrimp. Noodles were perfect texture, al dente, and also very fun to eat. Rigatoni Alla Vodka - bland and did not want to have more after trying 2 noodles. Short Rib Ragu - this was also very underwhelming. The whole dish from the sauce to the meat. Basically had half the menu since I tried all the apps and all the main dishes posted above. Unfortunate, since this was recommended by a friend. Ah well! read more

Columns, Romanian accent doors, the lanterns and walls --these details made it seem we were transported to Europe and it was so beautiful! I ordered the fried calamari and the short rib ragu. The calamari was fried well, but could have used a bit more seasoning. The aioli and marinara sauce the accompanied it help a lot with the flavors. I enjoyed the ragu sauce and the short rib was very tender. The pasta was just a tad el dente for me, but very slightly. I went there again last night because it is one of the few places in NoVA where their raw bar has clams on the "half shell". However I had forgotten to take my clam knife with me (based on my previous visit). First off: The wait staff including Ben* (the bar tender) do not seem to understand the term "On the half shell". When I ordered "a half dozen clams on the half shell" He asked me if I wanted them steamed or raw? The Middlenecks were meaty and very fresh and had a good flavor. However, IMHO they need to send their shucker to Eastern Long Island, NY to learn how to learn to shuck clams and separate the clam meat from the shell. As NOT one of my clams were shucked probably. So, if you enjoy "clams on the half shell" may I suggest that if you have your own clam knife that you take it with you. Past that: Everything else was fine. * Ben was very attentive and made me feel welcomed and was very accommodating. Making for a pleasant experience over all. The food was very good. The only other comment is about the ambiance. It is fairly LOUD based on the acoustics. My Apple watch registered a sound level of about 95 DB sitting at the bar. NOTE TO MANAGEMENT: Teach your raw bar person how to shuck clams properly. I cannot help but wonder how many more clams people would order if they were probably shucked? read more

Our server Laura was genuinely pleasant and very nice. She was attentive and happily helped us decide which menu items were dairy free. The seafood pasta was absolutely delicious. The scallops were perfectly browned on the outside and tender. There were plenty of mussels as well as large shrimps in the seafood pasta. The dish was absolutely delicious with the correct balance of flavors. The chicken parm was delicious as well with a good portion and a delicious sauce. They had really good cocktail drinks too. We haven't been to Villagio in a very long time & we finally went to celebrate our one year marriage anniversary. To be 100% honest, we weren't too impress. We love villagio but we were sat in a space that was very small & a lot of traffic. We had to move our items to the side where there wasn't much traffic/ walking back & forth. This was a special night for us but the space just didn't seem like the best fit for us. In addition, we asked our server what they thought about the short rib and they just said "it's good" so we ended up ordering it but weren't a big fan of it.. I think more details on why it's good would have been great. Other than those two things, we did enjoy the calamari, chicken parm, & drinks.
