But when we arrived there had been a mixup with housekeeping, and the room had not been cleaned. They had first said they would send housekeeping right away, then offered to upgrade us to a cabin. The cabin was quite nice, and the bed was very comfortable. The only difference was the suite included bath towels. In the cabins you had to bring your own, so there were no towels. But that was OK, because we had brought bath towels, not quite understanding the website. Great value for the money, and I would definitely come back here again.

Each had their own approach, but the new owners are really taking this place in the right direction. The cabins have all been given a facelift without sacrificing the feel of a lake side cabin. One of our favorite things are the pontoon boats that you can rent by the day or for your whole stat. On our very first visit we experienced the joys of Nibbles, a small eatery/ice cream shop on the property. The new owners have aggressive plans to revive this sweet spot which will surely be a favorite stop for all who live on the lake! You will not be disappointed in this cute little gem of a property just minutes from downtown Colon, Michigan (which is also accessible via boat!) The town is host to several great restaurants as well as some awesome magic shows! The salon in town is a welcome stop if you forgot to get your toenails painted before you arrived! Treat yourself to a weekend (or a week) on the lake at Palmer Lake Lodges!!

I will break this review into why I would come back, a review of the food and the not so pretty…read morestuff. I would come back because there aren't many restaurants where you can sit outside and truly enjoy a water view. Here you had a great view of the water in a nicely designed patio. The seating was comfortable under the veranda..which shielded the sun. In this night there was a gentle breeze that made the meal very pleasant. In addition to the great views...the food was very good. The menu is very small...but the items we had were very well done. On top of that...I got the most expensive entree which was about $15. Excellent price, food and views!! This is a good enough reason to give them a try. I said the food was good! My wife had the fried cod and thought it is very good. The cod was fresh, tasty and thick. The breading was just the right thickness with a slight sweet taste. The breading was slightly greasy but didn't dominate the taste. The Cole slaw was very soupy. The slaw pieces were finely chopped. So small that is blended in with the soupiness. The fluid was heavy on a Mayo taste with a slight hint of vinegar or spice. I had the special of the day - ribs and pork belly pieces. The ribs were cooked to completion. The main meat had a moist taste but the crust was a bit tough. There was a very attractive glaze on the ribs. The homemade sauce was very tasty - possibly too sweet. The glaze was a bit tough also. The ribs had a decent amount of meat to the bones. For $15...I thought the rib meal was good and a deal. The ribs came with green beans and fries. The green beans were fresh and nicely steamed. They didn't have any crisp to them nor did they have much seasoning. However they were good. The fries were excellent. The fries had a nice crisp edge with a softer seasoned thick part. The fries were not greasy and accented with some light cheese and pork. There were several downsides that I didn't expect. First of the Cold Springs Resort had no signage. We assumed that the large white building was it but we weren't sure. Upon encountering the building you aren't sure where to park as parking is not marked - just grassy/gravel spots. Once you get out of the car...you are actually on the backside of the building. You assume that the closet door is it. Upon entering that door you find a blank facility that is kind of dingy and eerie. At that point you decide your next best choice is to walk toward the water. Tada..activity that feels like a restaurant!! Now that you are on the patio..where do I go? There were a group of three 20 something girls chatting amongst themselves. Mind you...no one has a name tag or a shirt that shows they work there. I asked for a hostess. They just said they worked there (I.e. I'm not a hostess). Eventually a waitress surfaced to let us know that we could seat ourselves. Once seated the young waitress wondered over to take our drink order. She had a nice point of order system to enter things. After taking our drink order she went and sat at a patio table and started eating with two other waitresses. Eventually she did get up and go inside the bar and return with our drinks. Very odd! Once we got past the drinks she settled into the same pattern...visit the table..return to eating. Eventually she managed to provide refills after asking twice. I will chalk this up to young waitresses that aren't trained well. Uniform shirts, name tags, better signage and who does what procedures would be a good start. Ending employee meals when they start serving customers would be ideal. This visit had been unusual by this point. I love they nostalgia of this old facility. It kind of reminded my of the movie "Dirty Dancing". I could just envision how active this resort was back in the day. Unfortunately, in todays state it needs some more modernization. I did visit the restroom. While clean..it could have used a thorough cleaning. The room was very dimly lite. The toilets were very short and there were no handicap hand rails. Though...the restroom had been recently renovated with lake decor. Overall...it is still a must try. And...I would come back for the reasons listed above. Hopefully the management team can help address some of the odd situations I listed.

And fresh food that is out of the kitchen sitting there with flies all around it swarming the food landing on it and you can see the waiters swatting away the flies! Absolutely disgusting! Service is slow. We waiting 20 minutes to get drinks! 20 minutes! Insane!

I had to use the ALL TRAIL app because they did wave in and out a little but thing were you'll get lost - its more of just missing additional trail and not getting all your steps in. Last but not least - i'm unsure if you're suppose to pay; at least when i went that day it was FREE but they did have signs posted of a list of fees. Since it was already an holiday because they decided to have the weekend free entry just be aware there's a possibility they might ask for some money. Lol! Happy hiking!!!

We are a family of 4 couples, each couple stayed in a different cabin. We stayed in Towhee, Flicker…read moreboth pet friendly one bedroom units with fold out couches, and Snipe and Redwing, studio units with pullout couches. We also rented the linens and towels. No one complained. These cabins are immaculate, equipped with kitchens, kitchen gadgets, heat, and screened in porches. The beds were comfortable, the towels fluffy and clean and the sheets soft. The windows opened, the doors and drawers opened and shut, the equipment was clean and worked. We used the refrigerators, the freezers, the range, microwave, toaster and coffee makers. We were pleasantly surprised to find kitchen towels and a dishrag along with dish soap. We used the grill located just outside the unit. Upon arriving we were greeted by Ranger Mark who explained everything and helped us get our linens to the units. There are lovely moderately difficult and very easy trails and walkways. The Rolling Oaks Trail is about a 3 mile off-the-grid trail. It has hills, grassy trails, flower fields and lots of twists and turns in the shade and sunshine. There's also a multi-use blacktopped trail which could be manageable for bikes, wheelchairs, and baby strollers. The Trine Recreation Area is part of the Indiana State Recreation Areas and its smaller and more private than others we have visited. It's wonderful. There's the option of boating, hiking, biking and there's a children's playground. Just across the highway there is Pokagon State Recreation Area that is much larger with a more diverse trail system along with horseback riding and an Inn as well as cabins and camping. It also has a black topped bike trail. We tried the short hikes one day and the 8 mile Devils Challenge another day. Pokagon SRA was busy, everyone was respectful of social distancing when passing. The hours for check-in 4 pm and it is 4 pm! Checkout is 11 am and they request you cleanup your cabin and pack up the linens and towels (if rented). It's no big deal and as long as you're respectful of the property the cleanup should be easy. The cabins are 5 years old and in great shape. You can see they are well maintained. My suggestions to further improve the units: one more shelf in kitchen high up on the level of the cabinet above the refrigerator. I struggled to find places for non-refrigerated foods of the floor. A full length mirror for those of us who need to be sure we are ready for the public (perfect spot on short wall near the bed head to the right of the pocket door) and some clothing hooks in the bedroom. The dresser is great but without a closet coats, hats and clothes that are worn regularly need hanging. It looks like maybe a few people have tried hanging off the curtain rods? We highly recommend Trine State Recreation Area and it's lovely cabins.

I went to Angola to visit family that lived near by Fox Lakeview. The weather was a up and down…read moreand all over the place but the hospitality was warm and friendly. Jennifer met me as I pulled in to make sure that I was able to get in with no issues. It was a cold day and she had the electric fireplace on for me and the heat turned up. The space was clean and very user friendly. I brought my pups and they were comfy and cozy also. There are views of the lake and unknowingly to me views of a marsh land behind. I was able to walk my dogs easily behind the building. The first night it snowed and Jennifer made sure to salt the stairs for me when I had come back from dinner. The next day it was almost 70!! We were able to see cranes and hear them and the wonderfully loud sounds of the tree frogs!!! The following morning it snowed and went down to 8 degrees so I was able to see the marsh snow covered. Pokagen was a 10 minute drive away for a nice hike, and coming back to a warm and inviting space to relax and watch movies was the best. I look forward to coming when it is consistently nice weather and taking advantage of all the nature and parks around the area and maybe taking a kayak out also! Every now and then in your camping travels you will make reservations somewhere just because it's…read morein a convenient location on your route and end up stumbling upon a true gem. That's what happened to us with Happy Acres! Originally we were scheduled to stay for one night but at the last minute had to change to four and the staff was wonderful about accommodating our request. Check in was a breeze with confirmation emails, informative texts leading up to our arrival and when we finally got there our registration packet was waiting for us by the office door. Our site (#71) was super easy to get to and was a pull through which was mostly level for our 33' trailer. I spoke with two staff members; one over the phone when I had to change my reservation (Matt?) and another (Sidney?) when I stopped by their very cute camp store to buy a couple of shirts and they were both extremely pleasant and polite. The grounds are beautifully maintained and there is also a pool and dog park on site. The only negative we found was the very loud, ever present road noise. Happy Acres is right alongside highway 69 which makes it super convenient to access but noisy. Luckily we were running out AC or fans every night which mostly drowned it out. We work remotely from our camper and both our Verizon and TMobile signals were very strong. However TMobile was the speed test winner regularly showing d/l speeds of 200+ mbps. We come to the Midwest every year or two and Happy Acres will definitely be on our list of campgrounds to revisit. We heard that they are expanding the # of campsites towards the back of their property and if they are full hookup we will be sure to try to book one of those. Thanks Happy Acres!!!
